I still have a Game Informer magazine in storage showcasing how Polyphony recorded the audio of the cars. There was a lot of effort and high end equipment capturing what I assume were excellent recordings, seemingly none of which made it into the actual game. I can only assume that a dog must've eaten all the tape that stored the audio recordings of the cars, and at the last minute before release, Polyphony told the audio guy "don't come out until you've replaced all the recordings" before they locked him in the office bathroom with a boom microphone and a Panasonic vacuum cleaner. This is the kind of audio the game should've shipped with. What a fantastic job, especially considering how small the file samples needed to be in order to work. The constraints are crazy.

CLK GTR was a V12, yes, but the one in the game is a CLK-LM. It was named CLK GTR in some builds, but the lower nose and the vents on the wheel arches give it away.
I'm curious to see how they did it. I always though GT4 had a mixing issue, as if you drive in different camera views, or look backwards, the car always sounded different. One good example is the Mazda 323f / Lantis. Driving in the bumper camera it sounds like the typical GT4 vaccume cleaner, but if you park it and turned the volume way up and listen to it idle from the chase camera, it sounded very similar, with a low burble of the V6 that. If you revved it very slightly you could also hear a lot more detail, but things just fall apart when you turn the volume back to a normal level and start to drive it
That's down to each car having two recordings, one for engine and one for exhaust. Exhaust is what people typically associate with "a car sound" and the engine is the more ticky side with less bass. When you change to bumper or bonnet camera the game shifts the mix to prioritise the engine side, to fake a sort of 3D audio effect. When you stop the car and rev in GT4 it almost exclusively uses the exhaust audio, which is why you'll hear it faintly on bumper camera until you actually start to move away.
It's possible but I'm still in two minds over it. Replacing it with something else is the most tricky option, and I've had lots of requests asking me to keep it as-is, and lots to remove it entirely. Not sure what I'll do yet but I'm aware of it.
