I have three words for you, Dead Man's Party!
Also, they had a hit with the theme song to the 80s teen movie Weird Science. Nowadays Danny Elfman is very successful at writing movie scores.

Danny Elfman is also a film composer who has done so many films that you probably love, but never knew he did.
He is also the singing voice for Jack in Nightmare Before Christmas, as well as the composer.
    Check out more Oingo Boingo.

The best 80's band. I went to all of their concerts and they were so much fun. Danny Elfman went on to score over 100 films like Nightmare Before Christmas (his vocals), Batman (89), and Edward Scissorhands. Dead Man's Party is a must listen. It's one of Oingo Boingo's most notable songs.

Interesting Fact: This song (and subsequent album) was released as Danny Elfman for a solo album. The band still play on it. From what I gather, Elfman signed on as a solo artist as the record label was not interested in signing Oingo Boingo but Danny managed to get the band on the album regardless as session musicans so technically it is Oingo Boingo.

Oingo Boingo with Danny Elfman! YAS!!!! You do know that he is the voice of Jack Skellington from Nightmare Before Christmas. Best Boingo song to hear is the long song called Insanity, especially a live version. Seeing Boingo perform that song in concert still gives me some great memories from that concert. Also, Private Life. This is one band you should checkout period.

A song with a similar "new-wave" type sound... "One Night in Bangkok." By Murray Head, from the Musical "Chess." Fun fact, it was written by the two guys in ABBA. It is literally about a chess match in Thailand. Fun, and some lyrics are sort of semi-"rapped."

"Dead Man's Party" is a great song -- played at thousands & thousands of Halloween parties ever since.
"I Love Little Girls" is hilariously creepy, enough that it got banned from a lot of radio stations -- and the controversy just helped sell more albums.
Steve Bartek is a truly underrecognized guitar hero -- because he could easily come up with whatever was needed to fit with whatever melodic/harmonic madness Danny Elfman threw at him.
And, you probably didn't realize it, but Danny Elfman composed the theme to The Simpsons.

Weird that y'all did this one. They are one of my favorite 80's bands [ya, I was one of those teens]. I was going to recommend anything from the Dead Man's Party album.
As long as I am here, I might as well recommend some others on my list.
    Check out:
Scritti Polliti -- Cupid & Psyche 85 album -- Check out 'Perfect Way', 'Hypnotize' and 'Absolute' -- Factoid: Miles Davis covered Scritti Politti's song "Perfect Way" on his 1986 album Tutu
General Public -- All The Rage album -- Check out 'Hot You're Cool,' 'Tenderness' and 'Never You Don't That' -- Factoid: Vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger were original members of The Beat
Big Country -- In A Big Country album -- Check out the title track 'In A Big Country,' as well as 'Chance' and 'All of Us'
And just for shits & giggles, have a look at 'Heartbeat It's A Love Beat' by The DeFranco Family [They appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand nine times, as well as The Brady Bunch Variety Hour]. They were a 70s pop music family group from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada. They would have been Canada's answer to The Osmonds and The Jackson 5. Tony DeFranco, the youngest and the lead on the song, was 14 at the time of the songs release.

This is a damn good track, and it's so cool that you picked it up and did your reaction to it. This came from Danny's solo album, So-Lo, which was actually an Oingo Boingo album but it was released as a Danny solo thing from MCA, and then they changed the contract to include the whole band. It was made during a transition period for the band: their keyboardist and bassist were on the way out, so they brought in new members after this song and album were made.

Danny Elfman's expressions and theatricality are a significant part of the Oingo Boingo "flavor". Danny developed and honed those skills with his brother Richard in the vaudeville troupe "The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo" - when Richard left the group, the band shortened the name and modified their sound to a unique mix of swing, ska, and punk! Danny wrote pretty much all Oingo Boingo's music, and Steve Bartek (the guy playing the guitar solo in front of the picture of Danny that Amber associated with Annie Lennox) did the arrangements. Danny and Steve still often work together of film scores - most recently for 2020's "Dolittle".
Note that this song is technically Danny Elfman, and not Oingo Boingo - the band had been dropped from one record company and did not have a new contract, so Danny did this under his own name while the band was working on a new contract - however, the band behind Danny is the same people as Oingo Boingo - retroactively, fans recognize "So-Lo" as an Oingo Boingo album in all but name. :-)
"So-Lo" was the last album with bassist Kerry Hatch and keyboardist Richard Gibbs - Hatch was replaced by John Avila, and Gibbs by Mike Bacich on the next album ("Dead Man's Party").

Here is a bit of useless trivia. This song was on Danny Elfmans' solo album So Lo. He released this album as a solo album because he thought that it sounded different enough from Oingo Boingo that he thought fans wouldn't like it. But, over the years it has been considered as an Oingo Boingo album enough that it is now considered part of their discography.

My 17 year old daughter loves Oingo Bingo so I get to drive around feeling nostalgic listening to some of my favorite music from my younger days. According to my daughter a lot of her friends are fans. I always loved 'Not My Slave' and 'Dead Man's Party'. Danny Elfman is an amazing talent.

Danny Elfman is an amazing composer. Any Tim Burton film involves Danny Elfman . He has written the music scores to countless movies including Batman, Men in Black, Beetlejuice......and on and on. If I were to list every song or score that he has created would probably overload this comments section. If I can find a straightforward list I will post it.

So excited to see a Boingo reaction. So sad that Gratitude was the first one. Not that it's bad, but many other better songs out there. Gratitude comes off Elfman's So-lo album which really had most of the band as backing. They are really known more as the band Oingo Boingo (or just Boingo). As a teenager of the 80's in southern California I'm very familiar with them. Their Halloween concerts were amazing. Better stuff is mostly from the Dead Man's Party album (4th album) and earlier. Jordan with his love of lyrics will get a kick out of many Boingo songs. Fan favorites are Dead Man's Party, Only a Lad, Nothing to Fear, Grey Matter, Just Another Day. Their style evolved album to album but to a Boingo fan was always recognizable. A mix of rock, punk, ska, new wave and other influences. I also recommend Who Do You Want to Be, Good For Your Soul, Stay, On the Outside, Private Life, just so many more. Concert versions of songs are always good, the music videos can be a little weird.

Everything on their "Best of" album is awesome. Danny Elfman has a long career in the movie score business. Beetlejuice, Batman (1989) are stand out examples, with Elfman even singing for Jack Skellington in A Nightmare Before Christmas.
For another good Oingo Boingo song, check out "No One Lives Forever"

as a terrible trumpet player and part of a salt and pepper combination who graduated in 1985, and terrorized the mean streets of Vancouver WA. This was our favorite group. we were living through a time where horns were simply a few staccato blasts in pop. Boingo has a real horn section with real parts in most songs. to see Danny Elfman's instruments constructed by him, check out the whole farewell concert. As an oldster, I've seen watching first impression vid of Oingo Boingo all day, and I shall not stop! He has a fascinating story and as an 18 year old joined his brother on a European tour as part of a vaudeville group, then on his own at 19 did a tour of some African countries playing percussion instruments before getting malaria and returning to the states. His bro had come back and tasked him with his first movie music score completed in 2 weeks, The Forbidden Zone (has an unfortunate blackface at the beginning, but my friend breezed right by it as a fan). I'd be interested in your takeoff you have the chance. Have a wonderful life filled with Gratitude (HAR) as we GenXers hope you can do what we didn't have the votes to do.

Ignore everyone who says "listen to Dead Man's Party". That was the album the first bad Oingo Boingo release. The humor was gone as were the crazy lyrics and arrangements. For the real deal try:
Who do you want to be
    Only a Lad
    Insects
    Wild Sex
Nothing to Fear (but fear itself)
    Good for your soul
    Nasty Habits.
