    Riding Solo is a video series about motorcycling alone in the USA backcountry on a BMW 1200 GS motorcycle. The videos were filmed during a 6,000 mile/30-day solo ride in the summer of 2020 in locations including Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. Each episode focuses on great motorcycling roads (paved and dirt), camping, cooking and relaxing in scenic and remote locations. The purpose of the series is to show viewers how easy it is to ride solo on a motorcycle adventure in the USA backcountry.

    Not a mechanic either but in the future you may want to leave the old pads in when pushing in the brake caliper pistons. That way you don't accidentally damage the disc brake rotor with the screwdriver. It looks amazingly simple to change the pads while on the road though, which is great to know. Hopefully my future 1250 is just as easy, or I may have to rethink a 1200. Cinematography and story telling is outstanding as usual !!!!

    I appreciate the balanced reporting of life on the road. Epic motorcycle trips include periods that are not "highlight reel" moments. I just got back from a place called Xilitla, Mexico. While at the hotel, in the parking area, I looked down and noticed the toe tab on the shifter was about to fall off. A screw had come loose. How and why the toe piece didn't fall off is a miracle to me. I harvested a 1.0 x 6mm bolt from elsewhere on the frame and all was good.

    Be very careful when forcing the brake cylinders to make room for new pads. the correct thing is to open the expansion tank cover at the top of the system so that there is not too much pressure. In this way, damage to the mechanical pump o'rings on the lever is avoided. The same must be done for the rear pads. And remember to never apply the brakes without the pads. I'll stop by this place when I'm out there, too beautiful.

    As a guy that has run parts departments (in car dealerships) for over 40 years, it always pains me to see someone get the wrong parts. Hopefully they are at least the correct rear pads for your bike! Carry on, the scenery is incredible there! Also, my wife & I will have to stop & stay at your motel some day, as we really loved Bisbee when we were there a few years ago.

    If I ever undertook an adventure like this, I would have to take a basic motorcycle mechanics course or something similar first. I know virtually nothing about it. (although when I was young and had dirt bikes, I never took one anywhere for service. I got shop manuals and learned by doing - also with some input from a neighbor)
    But alas, an adventure such as this is beyond my reach due to various health issues. Thankfully I can enjoy it thru your videos. Thank you!

    Great video! Thx! Sorry that you were given incorrect brake pads. A bit of a tip, when doing bake work always apply spray brake cleaner liberally to the calipers and pads before starting the repair and let dry (few seconds). It controls potential brake pad asbestos, or otherwise harmful dust, as well as removes particles from the caliper pistons/boots that may contaminate piston to caliper contact surfaces when compressing the piston into the caliper to make space for the thicker new brake pads. Great video! 😉👍
    (Edit: I forgot to mention to spray the rotors as well to remove any contaminates, oil, or grease, and to safety inspect all your brake components, such as piston seals, piston corrosion, piston/caliper movement/free play, caliper pins/sliding rods, rotor cracking, damage, or warping, brake line cracking, anti vibration clips, fluid leaks, or air in lines, etc.)

      The rhythm changes... some of it kicks in the moment you leave home, other times it feels more like "the same old routine" packing, unpacking, setting up camp, etc. But you defiantly have to switch it up along the way on a long ride... take some days off, go for a hike, do something different and then ride some more!

    • @patrickcooper9641
      @patrickcooper9641 3 роки тому

      @@SterlingNoren You are absolutely correct Sterling. In my experiences the rhythm will change when you let it change because of scenery, weather, people you might briefly encounter while having coffee or refueling the bike. The problem is when the adventure becomes a routine and to me this is when I will stop and as you say do something different. This is the problem that long distance riders face especially when dispersed camping. It can get pretty lonesome....which is why once in a while I would stop at a campground, spend a night or 2 just to talk to people and share life stories. When you are a long way from home, it could be Mongolia or deep into Chili, it get very lonely except for the usual stop at a gas station! This is when I would go and get a "motel" in a city with some interesting things to see/do just to get the mind out of unpacking, packing, cooking and where is the next gas station. Just my 2 cents. Fantastic adventure videos and for the many of us that are in confinement it sure helps to get our mind off this crazy world...........Cheers
