I remember the day i got the "Yes, i am the real Garry".
I was on a almost empty RP server back in 2014 ish. Then i suddenly got the achievement, opened the playerlist and there he was, "Garry :D"

The reason why cheaple is so low poly is because he usually appears in scenes where you can access or see close. He is used as a long-distance model made to be looked at from far away.
I’ve heard his face model was a friend of a developer who had passed shortly after creating it too im not sure the legitimacy of that but I think that’s part of the reason why it was on the iceberg

Well it can be true and at the same time false, since standart hl2 rebels and citizens react to the player as if he was gordon freeman, no matter the playermodel
I actually got the “Yes, I am the real Garry” achievement back in January of 2018 when He joined a 1942 server I was in!
I got mine in a DarkRP server, I literally just got Gmod and didn't even realize I had it untill a month or two later.
My friend got that too

Unfortunately this was likely not Garry. I do have this achievement as well, however somehow some player was able to trick the game into thinking it really was Garry. Sorry to disappoint.

It is referring to shadow people that tend to spawn in rare spots of the city.
In an alleyway, near constructions with doors, sticking out of corners and spots.
The UA-camr that covered this the best is Librariar.
These shadows don't spawn if you use vehicles or noclip. You have to generally walk and be patient.

Father Grigori being in the animal tab was actually a mistake, but Garry thought it was funny so he kept it in.

ive never felt that sense of not being alone on gmod maps... however i have gotten feeling of being too alone, like the place is completely dead and if the haunting ambience is ghosts, they would not be the kind of ghost you could see, let alone be a threat, besides how much threat can you really feel when you can spawn an atom bomb in your hands? still, being truely alone feels creepy in a different way
The virus problem went back even before the 2010's, in the mid 2000's there were viruses you could get from joining certain servers. I remember this one virus that would make it so no matter which server you join (even if you play singleplayer too), this annoying loud rock music would play in the background on infinite loop and it would also replace your chat with "Zeegyboogydoog" or something like that. There was a site for a time (or was it a facepunch forum group?) called Gmod Security or something like that and would help players get rid of these viruses and also document all the different types.
The secret phrase, “Bloxwich”, is actually a town in the West Midlands region of England. It’s inclusion as the secret phrase is a reference to the fact that Bloxwich is actually Garry Newman’s hometown.
The achievement also triggers (or at least, used to trigger) when you say the phrase "Rusty bullet holes."

Explanation for the Cheaple models:
The Cheaple models were used in Half-Life 2. They were only ever used in special scenes, specifically on cameras. For example, in dr. Kleiners lab at the beginning of the game, there is a big set of TVs that have a camera feed on them. In those camera feeds, there are citizens and cp's passing by. To save resources, the cheaple models are used instead of actual citizens. This applies to cp's as well. The only time the cheaple model is ever used is in dr kleiners lab and Black Mesa east.

you're mixing cheaples up with lod models, those are different and can be enabled by r_lod command iirc

@@ulthur5938 both cheaple cop and citizen are featured only in a cctv camera sequence in the kleiner's lab. the camera quality is all grainy so it hides their low-res look. male_cheaple is seen one more time in distant background at black mesa east. anyway, i believe there are lod models for cheaples too which means it's all optimized as extremely as possible.

26:26 this is so true every time I go into single player, 5 to 10 seconds of being in the game I hear a metal clanking sound and it happens every single time
As for the creepy music at 24:42, that is from Resident Evil 2 soundtrack, it's called "The Underground Labratory" a track that plays while exploring the NEST lab in the final act in the game. It fits really well with the map, gotta hand it to the map creator they got good taste!

I've played Gmod for 6 years, and never met Garry. My friend bought it like 4 years ago, and his very first public game, met Garry.
I've been playing gmod for a decade with over 10000 hours and have never gotten the achievement. Even when the steamid exploit was active
garry joined a prop hunt lobby i was in like 5 years ago.

Typing "R" with the HL2MP font gives you the valve logo!

Check out an addon called "Background NPCs - Fill the world". It's supposed to get rid of that unnerving feeling on the maps with ai nodes.

one thing i figured out is that in the gmod playermodel selection, every playermodel has its own name. the civilians are named after male or female like male07 or male09. father grigori stands out as he's christian because of "father" but in the playermodel selection part, his name is "monk"

Thanks for telling me 20 years later that the white room in gm construct can be used for something other than blinding me.
I’ve watched a iceberg on this already and it was relaxing, interesting, fun to watch but oh boy ima watch one again
I have an answer for 37:18 (Crow/Bird Pathways).
I decompiled gm_construct to have a poke around with it, and found out that the air nodes are actually made for helicopters and striders, there are only around 12 ai nodes for birds in gm_construct, and they aren't set up correctly (that or GMod's hammer editor doesn't like the nodes). The birds fly to the nearest or most convenient ai node, and stay there. They dont move to the next one (possibly because there are barely any nodes in the air (most of them are on buildings)) and simply stay put. I hope that makes sense!

I actually managed to get the "Yes, I am the real Garry" achievement on a sandbox server I was a super admin on, I don't remember much though since I was eleven years old at the time however, I do distinctly remember begging him to add me as a friend since I was an annoying kid at the time that didn't know any better, still not exactly sure why the owner of that server decided to make an eleven year old such a high rank but I'm not complaining.

The Gman Virus was real, I got it once, and remember posting about it on facepunch, but it didn't do any of that porn tab opening shit, all it did when you closed the game was give you gmans face texture with a screamer and close the game. It didnt actually affect your PC at all. Only gmod.

Sounds like the cough virus was made by someone frustrated that "vinh" wouldn't fix the bug that made the virus possible. So he made an annoying but nondestructive virus so it would actually get fixed.
You can call it bullshit but you can’t call it ineffective
If that's true, I'm not sure where to stand on that one. It's helpful, and prevented many worse problems, but it's still technically a fairly dick move.

It gives a depressing feeling.
I think that gets to everyone. I usually use the P2P server function so I can test shit on bots when building, and I can stomach most horror or even generally unnerving maps easily but that doesn't stop me from occasionally just getting a really bad uncanny feeling while playing. Whenever I get this I just leave and do something else, which I've yet to have cost me any time since if I'm working on something I'm almost definitely too distracted by it to really take in enough to feel uneasy.
Cheaple was a real person who modeled after a guy who died back in 2011. His parents comment on his obituary on his birthday every year

@@ilike8590 The cheaple model is from Half-Life 2 which was in development from 1999 to 2004. His face texture was probably made around 2001. Considering the guy died in 2006, it's not even remotely weird for Valve to have modeled a citizen after him.

I think V was chosen as the keybind for Noclip because it sits in a very confortable spot where the left thumb can easily reach it, allowing players to activate Noclip in situations where they would normally be preocupied with using WASD with the left hand and the mouse with the right (this is all coming from a right hander).

They discovered that a player model controlled by Kinect pretty much could knock out any NPC or player in one hit, so that the Kinect tracking wouldn't be messed up. Seeing a serious video about Gmod in 2021 is honestly the most heartwarming thing. I grew up playing Murder and TTT not knowing this game would leave a lasting impact on me long after my teenage years. Great video Endy!
I still play TTT to this day; Only now I play it in Pavlov VR. I still play Gmod as well, including G Saber, a free alternative to Beat Saber
26:37 That's what cause our brain to be scared, you'll hear people talking, sirens, as if you were in a normal city, but once no one is there with you, you'll feel lonely and scared of not being alone. And also if you used to play on these maps in the past with your friends, that'll also increase the feeling. Some people say it's liminal spaces, i recommend check it out if you have interest in that.
Extra information, GMOD uses HL2 textures and models. These models/textures give you a feeling that everything is abandoned, but as it is in perfect condition and with sounds of a normal city in the background, you panic

Cheaple is actually short for “cheap people” and what this means is that Half-Life 2 used these models in case it had to add NPCs far away from the players reach. From far away they look normal, but they are low rendered to save disk space. Hence the meaning of cheap

I don't think they are used to for disk space. If you need an additional cheap face instead of using an existing one, you are not saving space, you are occupying it even more.
I think it's more for performance reasons, but it wasn't even needed at the time.
Performance as well. Having cheap models also saves disk space because it has less resources

approximately 6% of my life since september 30th 2018, the day i got gmod, has been spent playing gmod
