  • A radical feminist movement in South Korea tells women that instead of fighting the patriarchy, they should turn their backs on men once and for all. Let's talk about it.

From what I gathered from street interviews I watched and articles I read, the declining marriage and birth rates are because Koreans are overworked and having children is too expensive. Their education system is brutal, it puts an insane pressure on the kids to get only good grades, to go to good universities then find an excellent corporate job where they spend most of their time. Not a lot of time left for dating and recreational activities I’d imagine. And I don’t think motherhood is incentivized much.

This is also happening in Japan. Actually, Asian culture tend to be much more traditional in their values than western countries like the US. A lot of older generations prefer the role of woman to be at home, taking care of the kids and the man to be the bread winner. This issue is that in today’s GLOBAL economy it’s so difficult to have that lifestyle.
It’s just insane how this is not just a national issue, but a global one.

Korea's specific problem is their materialism. They're rated as the #1 most materialistic nation. I don't believe that to be true anyways since places like UAE exist but Korea is definitely up there.
Places with lower wages, struggling to afford food on a regular basis, have much higher birth rates. How are people not pointing this out??

    • @minime7375
      @minime7375 27 днів тому +27

@@CanadianEhHole People who are more poor than Koreans tend to have more children as you pointed out but that is due to other factors, either it’s religion, high infant mortality or financial incentive. I don’t believe in South Korea there’s much incentive to have children and everyone interviewed said it was insanely expensive to have children. Most likely because the mother would have to give up her job and halve the family income. I would imagine then when the mother doesn’t have a good paying job and is from a rural area it’s not a massive issue but since a lot of the population is in the big cities all potential mothers would have jobs and the expenses would be much higher. As someone mentioned in the comments the work week is like 70 hours as opposed to most Western countries 40 hours. It doesn’t leave much time to raise kiddies.

    • @sparking023
      @sparking023 27 днів тому +24

Yep, it's basically the same as what's happening in Japan. A brutal work culture that leaves little time and energy for dating. And if they really follow the same core issues, South Korea would have a culture and policies that benefit the elderly much more than the younger generation, while pushing said generation through the proverbial meat grinder. That on itself would be a motivation to not having children.

Brett, you don't fully understand the situation here. Not wearing makeup and shaving their head really is a big deal for korean women because, unlike the west, the beauty standards over there are INSANE. 18 year olds are known to receive plastic surgeries as their graduation gifts. Any woman over 47 kg is considered fat,no matter her height. The plastic surgeries, skin care and makeup there is on another level, their beauty industry is disgusting. From what I understand, this is very small movement. The bigger issues in SK from what I've heard Koreans talk about regarding not having kids is living expenses (most jobs are in Seoul which is super expensive), the government increased the cap on work hours to 69 hours a week, and Koreans have the highest amount of consumer debt in the developed world. How are you supposed to become a mother when you have to work 70 hours a week just to survive?

I’m South Korean female, I am not a feminist, but I have always grew up knowing that when a women marries into a Korean family the mother in law hates on the daughter in law. The daughter in law has to bear a son for the family and if they don’t they will ridicule her. They treat the daughter in law as a slave to produce child and be a quiet servant. My mom went threw this experience until she had a son but still my dad’s family were super mean. It’s not like my dad had any money either. They were dirt poor but my grandma was cruel to my mom until she passed. But the way that families treat the daughter in law is cruel. She always have to walk on egg shells. My friend is getting married soon and I can say her mother in law hates her and treats her pretty badly. The Korean marriage system actually sucks. Why would any family allow their own daughter to be treated poorly for them to be making children of different family. Now Korean women can make their own money and not walk on eggshells all the time. And that’s why I’m not marrying Korean men. There is such a high chance for the mother in law to have high standards even if they don’t have money. Korean families are stressful to handle. Thank God I’m Korean American I can just marry American or European and have better chance to live peacefully.

I love your content, but I feel like this is a heavily ill-researched segment. Korea's idea of feminism is very necessary and a lot less radical than American feminism. I'm Korean American and I can see from my peers that Korean women are much more modest and less sexually active because this is simply not in our culture (yet.) Korean women are also overworked and are many times ill-equipped to have children since traditional gender roles are still in place (i.e. women need to take care of the children) without the economics to maintain those standards. Most Koreans work in Seoul (the capital) yet the rent and house prices for a sizeable apartment are atrocious even compared to NYC's standards. Most Koreans live with their family until marriage so they are able to save up money to move out and buy a house with their spouse once they marry, it is no irresponsible, it is part of my culture. Also, Korean feminism is much needed. Less than 15 years ago there was a horrific child r*** case and the man was only charged 12 years. Domestic abuse is still heavily normalized in the older generation and many law enforcement officers overlook it. I hope that maybe you can research more about Korea's sociopolitical system because it is really interesting to see from an American persepctive.

As a Korean immigrant to the US it's pretty obvious you know nothing about Korea and have no idea what you're even talking about. Do me a favor and google "여성시대 사건사고“ and read the page on 나무위키, then come back and say "Korea's idea of feminism is a lot less radical than American feminism" ... although I doubt you can even read Korean considering this 1gn0rant comment you wrote. Also the US has 3.5 times higher cases of SA per 100,000 people than Korea and most other developed countries follow a similar trend, so violence has nothing to do with low birth rates. Not to mention that this 4B movement isn't even a thing in Korea, statistics show that most Koreans who renounce their citizenship or have a fiance from a foreign country are men. It's Korean MEN that are running from Korean women, not the other way.

There was several ppl involved in a huge blackmail of sexual assault that involved over 200k men. It's been pushed under the rug due to their culture over how they are viewed by others. They care more about their image than protecting girls and women from being raped. There was a case of one of the most brutal rapes in their history and the guy only served a couple years and is now getting the best round the block protection from their government. It's crazy. If a guy claims he's drink and raped a woman he can get away with it or die a few months depending on how badly she's hurt and if there is proof based on their laws. Insane.

While I ususally agree with Brett, South Korea and Japan are very different from the US. While I hate Western feminism, I believe Eastern feminism is different. In South Korea, Japan, and China the politics for woman are at least 50yrs behind. In order to get a job, you'll need to take a photo and add it to your resume, along with your height and weight and they will judge if you''re "pretty" enough to work for them. Both men and women are pressured to undergo plastic surgery to fit an ideal type of face and skin tone just to get jobs and to get into college. Not only that, but stalking is COMPLETLY LEGAL unless they try to kindap you, then that's when it becomes a crime.
I think Western women are very privileged and have it even better than their male counterparts, however in Asia.. They are very behind to the point where the CCP had to put out an announcement for all of it's Chinese citizens visiting abroad to: NOT beat their wives in public because it's not tolerated in the West unlike in China and other Eastern Countires. And how China will not be able to help them if they get arrested for this in a Western country. How is that not crazy?!?! It's like when women beat men here the West and no one bats an eye. Abuse is abuse no matter if the perpetrator is male or female.

They panicked with a 1% population overweight boost a few years back (they are short generally so that’s like 140lbs is overweight) and now require companies to help provide employees with weight management tools. At good companies, it’s free fitbits and diet plans and sports groups. At bad companies it’s scales and pressure.

I think you should explore the actual situation for women in South Korea. This kind of thing is bound to happen when women are treated as second-class citizens. It's still a misogynistic society where rapes are very rarely investigated properly, women are generally expected to stay home rather than pursue their careers, and adultery is so common that escort business cards are scattered throughout the streets on a Friday night (or other nights too, in fact).
Also, it's normal for Koreans to live at home for a long time, just like in Japan. Buying a home is so stupendously expensive that it's hard enough to achieve when married. People are judged on that single status and the desperation and expectation to get married is rampant.
When stuff like this is happening: ua-cam.com/video/kFLuckWYBWg/v-deo.html
I think there is a bigger picture to be looking at. Korean men need to change... A LOT. They have no right to be fed up based on the way women have been treated in the country.

The superficiality in SK society is insane, so not wearing makeup actually is a big deal. The main problem of South Koreans not creating their own families is not feminism vs. society, it's that living is already expensive enough, having children is close to unthinkable. I'm Korean and have lived for decades in both South Korea and the United States. There is a significant amount of misinformation being spread in the comments section. The claim that there are higher rates of violence against women in South Korea than in the US is completely false. The US is much more dangerous for women in terms of violent crime.
The topic of women's rights and status in South Korea is extremely complex. It involves factors such as Korea’s Confucian ideological roots, rapid industrialization, and a strong emphasis on education, among others. Despite this complexity, it is evident that various harmful ideologies, including radical feminism, have influenced interactions between Korean men and women, leading to a lot of negativity, especially as South Korea industrialized and higher education became more widespread.
As I’ve mentioned, this is a very intricate subject that cannot be fully addressed in a single comment.

Editing to say: I am very much interested in getting married and having children. I have good men in my life and brothers who genuinely care for me and protect me when I need it, just like I care for them when they need my help. That doesn't negate how many of my personal girl friends have come to me about their stories of SA and familial abuse. I get along fine with the men in my life but cannot erase the wariness inside me because experience and hearing from my peers personally has alerted me to the possibility of any man I choose to be vulnerable with turning out to be violent and abusive. It's oftentimes invisible until it isn't, and while everyone and their grandmas can have their opinions on this issue I don't think any modern woman will be swayed by what you say until it is acknowledged that however irrational it may seem to you, women have a right to try and protect themselves however they can, even if it IS extreme, even if it IS counterproductive.
If you are against the modern feminist movement of "men and women are the same!" then you must know that men are physically stronger than most women. So of course some will 'overreact' by choosing complete celibacy. Don't ridicule a lady for fearing for her own safety. You don't think so many of us want a loving husband we can trust with our lives, and whom will trust us with his? I'm neither for nor against this movement in SK, but I think Brett needs to do a little more research into just how truly (and I hate to use this word) "patriarchal" and abusive toward women South Korean society and government can be. There have been huge cases recently that give only a snapshot into the horrendous crimes against women (and young girls!) that either go completely unpunished or afford these criminals the lightest of sentences. As others have commented, you should check out the "nth room" and "Burning Sun" cases. Plus, there are numerous confessions of both Korean and foreign women experiencing brutal sexual assault while in Korea and not receiving any justice. Even an extremely popular weekend television show that aired in 2021 and won several awards came under fire from both Korean and international audiences because it depicted a father locking his adult daughter in a room for days and not letting her out because she refused to break up with her boyfriend. The character was literally crying and banging on the door with her family just on the other side ignoring her pleas, for fear of going against the father.

I think some cultural context goes a long way to helping parse out some of the ridiculousness of the B4 movement. First, a lot of Americans straight up do not understand how traditional Korean cultural expectations are clashing with modern socioeconomic expectations. The B4 movement is an extreme form of protest, but they are highlighting problems that are still big in Korea but that have been talked to death in other western cultures. For example, women in the U.S. are not expected to wear lipstick and dress up every time they leave the house, even to run errands. Korean women are. This is just one example, the list of societal expectations for women in Korea wouldn’t be out of place in a 1950’s USA.
Creating equality between the sexes has a long way to go in Korea, the B4 movement is the equivalent to 1960s bra burning, an extremely vocal minority that takes things to extremes to highlight outdated sexist ideas.

Yeah. The pressure to wear makeup to hide "flaws" is insane, because we're all ordinary people just trying to survive in this hectic world. They have some of the most outrageous standards.. you must be severely thin but still expect you to be healthy enough to work and not complain; a V shape face with no visible pores or discoloration; double eyelids that most have to get surgery for, as well as rhinoplasty for a thin nose; back to weight.. you have to have a small waist, slim yet wide hips, big bust area, long legs to make the entire length of your body reach 8 heads.. and the more heads you can fit in your height, the better. Honestly, it's kpop idols and kdrama actors who suffer the most when it comes to these standards. Their job is in the public eye, and netizens don't treat them as human whenever they're proven to not be perfect. The amount of bullying they receive is so unnecessary. All idols and actors go on extreme diets that are detrimental to their health for the sake of making strangers who have never shown a general concern for their wellbeing happy. Some even go as far as to end their life because of all the insults they hear daily. It's really bad. In the West, people are too coddled to the point where they become entitled and disrespectful when they get told no for their behavior. Both are bad in their own ways. Korea is very strict, whereas the West lacks in being strict.. well, for Libs. If you're conservative in the West, they see that as oppression. Whereas in Korea, their conservative culture is looked down upon by the West who loves being disrespectful and vulgar. Both need to work on themselves for the better of their people.

I can go to the gym and see many men far bigger and stronger than me that look REALLY GOOD and same with the women there and it only inspires me to not give up and keep going (especially the women) because i know that those people got that way by not quitting. and thats the problem with our western culture i feel. maybe its not so much that they have crazy beauty standards but maybe we -the western culture - just dont challenge ourselves as much as we should or take care of ourselves as much as we should or use to.... proof is in the pudding. we have the highest record of obesity unmatched by any other country in the world.

@@bluewolf2708 yup. it just sums up that extremes is never healthy and moderation is key. its good to have healthy goals for your own health and beauty and to strive to become a better version of yourself every day, but its another thing entirely to take it to levels of obsession and unhealthiness or to not accept your natural self. on the flip side, its also easy lie and self-cope to just not even try and tell one self that it doesnt matter. that is equally unhealthy if not more so. and both of these paths in life have SEVERE irreversible consequences in life once you get to a certain age.
that being said, i do think this whole instant stereotype that athletic built women with hourglass bodies - especially ones who are "blessed" - must have had surgery or implants or starved themselves... ect, ect... really needs to stop. cause like you said, its really damaging to these girls who worked hard to get where they're at and is its own form of true objectification and prejudice.
not all women who have bodies or faces look that way from unhealthy surgical or cosmetic or extreme diet practices... some women, in fact ALOT of women, really do just look that amazing and have that great of bodies from simple healthy lifestyles and choices and really not that uncommon. in fact its very common in communities and culture where they DO practice that. you can see women like that commonly in just about any city or country where people actually take care of themselves. my best friend up in washington is a perfect example. she doesnt do any surgery or extreme makup of any kind or have any crazy diet. yet her complexion is beautiful and the most perfect of anyone i know with the most beautiful face of any girl i know. and still looks like shes 20 despite just hitting 30.
not saying that people dont do the extreme cosmetics you speak of. indeed its a real thing of course. especially in the modeling business or movies business. both men and women. but i think people take it too far alot of the time and automatically assume every stunning attractive person mustve done instead of accepting they actually are that good looking and achieved it naturally. personally i think alot of that prejudice and stereotype of people critics know nothing about stems from most critics personal insecurity or jealousy (or at the very least, lack of education) and so revert to typical middle school mentality of tearing them down to try to build themselves up in their own minds.
thats just my take on it.

Brett, I have loved you before this, but this is where I think you’re wrong. As an East Asian, what I know of Korea, especially towards some aspects of their culture, is that it is more extreme than you think. There are holes in the walls of bathroom stalls where hidden cameras had once been installed. Women are still very much pressured to have families and do not nearly have as much freedom as Western women. Men too, often have a culture of being horrible to women, expecting hookups, the lot. Brett, is it right to say they’re being extreme if you don’t understand what is going on? Shouldn’t it speak volumes that women are taking such extreme measures about what they must be living through? I don’t want to say it like this, but as a woman, I will always have empathy for women first, and for what they choose to do. Do you not have empathy for women, especially when it seems obvious they’ve been forced to this?

South Korea is insane in terms of beauty standards and even men are expected to put on make-up to look more "up to the standard". Girls are literally getting plastic surgeries as gifts for academic achievemns to have better chances to get a job or generally suceed in life. Rates of eating disorders are sky high as well as suicide rates. Refusing to comform to these standards is something I find brave because they likely get death threats for being a part of this protest. Love and respect you Brett, but I think you should have looked more into the context of SK and their culture. In SK, physical and sexual abuse is fairly common and often isnt reported bc of how bad SK's justice system is. Some of the worst crimes you can commit as a human will only get you a couple years in prison and even then after a certain amount of time you can have those crimes removed from your record. Look into the Burning Sun case: a well known, but telling example of how terrible SK's justice system is.
Additionally, SK is OBSESSED with beauty and it is common for teenagers to be gifted plastic surgery vallets from their parents for their bdays, holidays, etc. To not wear makeup/not be hyper- attractive is to be considered ugly and horrible, and you will likely get bullied. Not just called names, but literally assaulted, refused employment, etc.

I'm Korean, and what you said about the justice system is fairly correct.
However I can tell you that most Koreans (men and women) also laugh at 4B movement, and what Brett said does not "comes across as very ignorant".
Crime or justice system has nothing to do with why some women are doing the 4B movement, or caused our population issue. Korea work culture is extremely intense. Companies don't give decent parental leaves, and they don't want to hire you if they think you are going get pregnant soonish. Not to mention everything is too expensive, and couples avoid getting married due to all the expenses that may cost.
When it comes to 4B , There is no "movement" in Korea, and the participants are a fraction, well, less than fraction of Koreans population. The groups are pretty well known as they usually communicate through their online "cafe (groups)". They are sad ladies usually in their mid 30 - mid 40s, who were rejected by men and hate men for it. They used to be in their 20s but now they are all old (And even angrier). They wants all men to die, including any hard working decent fathers or sons. They want to tell people the reason they are alone is because of their own choice for doing 4B, but most of Koreans know they aren't doing that by choice. It should be called 4C (4 things they CAN'T do).
So stop putting meaning in this sad pathetic excuse and call it some movement.

I feel like you are putting western ideology upon those there where it’s completely different. I share similar sentiments of those in the comments that you should do more research before speaking on the culture of South Korea and the dynamics involved. I believe you do know how to speak on American culture but not South Korean culture. Please do more research before speaking about South Korean culture and government. But the vibe of the ridiculously low birthrate is undeniably frustrating for most, if not all Koreans... dunno how big this 4B movement is, but there are many more larger factors to the low birthrate that should've probably been mentioned in this video. Like how it takes about 10 lifetimes worth of salary to afford a home.. it's why many men are "bi-hon" anti marriage, they just can't imagine being able to afford or support a family.. it's a real tragedy what's happening in S. Even though there are a number of stances I vehemently disagree with you on, I appreciate your perspective, as it adds a human touch, with which I can cognitively understand why you have the views you do.
Which is refreshing when so many American (conservative and liberal) pundits tend to rely on buzzwords and emotionally charged jargon to dog whistle knee jerk reactions within their audiences.
However, as someone who lives in East Asia, I would implore you to not force parallels between the US (a western country) and South Korea (an eastern country with a much older culture).
Different cultures have different reasons and factors for why their cultures currently exist the way they do and why they are experiencing the things they are.
South Korea has their own “culture wars” if you will. They are both generational and very much gender based as well.
While I cannot comment on the state of patriarchy in the US, it is dying a slow death out here in East Asia.
While the concerns of Korean women are very much validated in everyday Korean society, the 4b movement is largely a tik tok issue at the moment, for lack of a better description. With hopes to push the narrative.
Trying to hyper impose a US centric lens where one isn’t needed is at best misguided and at worst, disingenuous.

As a Korean myself, I agree that Korean government should enforce the punishment against SA crimes. But it goes the same way for both genders. All types of crimes are met with weak consequences. Women who falsely accuse men for sexual assaults, barely face any punishment. The legal system is based strongly on what the women say. If there is no security camera nearby, Korean men are doomed even when they are innocent. Even if men try to audio record themselves to prove innocence, the court doesn't see that as legal proof. Even before the court judging them not guilty, innocent men lose their jobs, family and everything, while false accusers walk free. And these cases also end up in SA statistics, making the public more alarmed. Do you know that there is Nth room situation going on right now but this time Korean women against men? These women are posting and sharing private informations about men on dating app(including American soldiers and minors, their sexual part size, sexual experience, ethnicity, photos, videos, etc, mocking them). This has been going on for years but the government and media finally started paying attention. And how about BL? For those of you who don't know, BL is short for "Boys Love". Feminists and fans make fictional pornographic contents about male celebrities like BTS having sexual intercourse with one another. It's sick. But none of these crimes are getting punished. We have to see it as good vs evil, not as men vs. women. We have to punish the bad ones. We should stop demonizing men or women for being same gender as criminals.

As a Korean man, it's challenging to convey the intricacies of South Korea's current landscape accurately. In South Korea, many men gravitate towards fields such as electricity, machinery, and chemistry, seeking stable employment and financial security. Conversely, women often dominate professions like journalism and print media, shaping the information flow with a perspective that predominantly reflects women's experiences.
Furthermore, there's a notable presence of radical feminism among South Korean women, which significantly influences the media narrative. This influence manifests in a selective portrayal of crimes, focusing solely on those committed by men while overlooking cases involving women. The underlying motive appears to be the manipulation of public opinion, with the aim of imposing a sense of guilt on men. This strategy effectively demonizes men while justifying any misdeeds perpetrated by women as a response to societal victimization.

However, when a similar crime against men took place on site called 'girls generation', media didn't handle with that crime. Why? Because even the presence of crimes by women can significantly dilute purpose for their activity, which is to instill guilt into men and justify vices by women in the name of doing right things. That's the fact

victim blaming is super high. a kpop singer or an actress was raped by her boyfriend and koreans blamed her for it. if im not mistaken she later committed suicide because the negative comments affected her a lot.

It’s not just Korea though, a lot of people are insecure & will follow through. I think that’s why a part of their thing is stop wearing makeup. Tbh as someone who listens and reads a lot of true crime, I see why people don’t wanna get married in Korea to begin with. I think some had genuine intentions but then it turned into what we’re seeing rn. I don’t think men are the absolute problem, as much as I’d love to just drop it on one person. We all make choices in life & sometimes it’s women that are in the “Men’s” place. As in women can be a groomer, harasser, abuser (Example: Colleen Ballinger was just outed the end of 2023 as a groomer) I think people just need to look at it with a wider lense & take account that anyone can be gross. More South Korean women goes to universities than Korean men, they earn more money (given the job and jobtitle is the same), they don't have to serve in the army for 2 years (so they start their education and career earlier than men), more Korean women initiate divorce and the Korean divorce court is extremely favorable for women, you can sue any men SO EASILY in Korea even for a false accusation (and the entire law system is favorable to women) so men are afraid of doing anything with Korean women. i'm a Korean currently living in Korea, so idk what you are talking about. You think South Korea is some outdated medieval style patriarchy society? it's even more radically feminized than most Western countries now. there's a huge movement among Korean men basically affirming to never touch or do anything with Korean women because it's a legitimate legal danger to them that can ruin one's life entirely.

Also the recent trend in Korea clearly shows that young Korean men (20s and 30s) are literally REFUSING to date or marry Korean women (it's simply legally too dangerous. for example, even if you are in a relationship/marriage but the woman decided to declare that the touch was unwanted, you can literally go to jail hyperspeed). also international marriage for Korean man/foreign woman is growing in a rapid pace.

      1. All Korean men have to serve 18 months of mandatory military service. But instead of gratitude, Korean feminists protested against the benefits. What do we get in return? NOTHING. No college tuition, no job hiring benefits, NOTHING. Not even a simply "thank you" from majority of Korean women to be honest. Years ago, Starbucks decided to give out free coffee to soldiers. You know what Korean feminists did? They protested and shut it down. They didn't even allow one cup of free coffee for the soldiers for their sacrifice.
3.Do you know that there is Nth room situation going on right now but this time Korean women against men? These women are posting and sharing private informations about men on dating app(including American soldiers and minors, their sexual part size, sexual experience, ethnicity, etc, mocking them). This has been going on for years but the government and media finally started paying attention.
      4. how about BL? For those of you who don't know, BL is short for "Boys Love". Feminists and fans make fictional pornographic contents about male celebrities like BTS having sexual intercourse with one another. It's sick. But none of these crimes are getting punished. We have to see it as good vs evil, not as men vs. women. We have to punish the bad ones. We should stop demonizing men or women for being same gender as criminals.

This is a natural occurrence as population reaches a certain point and that threshold is based on economical/societal conditions. Decreased populations does not necessarily lead to extinction. The population adjustment phase is honestly not as bad as what most would think.
If a population increases, it's due to the conditions which the population is developing in. When it decreases it due to factors in that society which leads individuals to obstain from reproduction. If the governing body is not producing high standards of living and equal opportunities the existing population would choose to not reproduce since it would only an extra burden to their current situation. In this scenario there's only a few options such as enforcing the creation of opportunities or allowing the population to drop which would open up more opportunities. These opportunities would essentially also provide better offers due to limited workforce selection. The pricing of all goods would essentially drop as well due to a smaller consumer base and more competition in attempt to redirect attention away from other competitors.
Either way this was a good video.

I've been watching this for a while, kind of studying it on the side for years. I'm very in tune with Korean politics, culture, history, and all things in between. I could attest to everything that woman from Seoul was saying; there is no radical feminist movement sweeping the country, it's basically like how it is here just less frequent and and institutionalized.
She hit the nail on the coffin about ignorant Western Asians who are applying very Western ideals to whatever sensational news they see about their countries of origin or each of their parents' country of origin.
Most Korean women still have relatively traditionalist values about what they want from life and what they want to contribute to society, and it's not a large margin away from most western women or American women.
So weird she's talking about this all because I was imagining in my head the other day how great it would be for a commentator like Brett to discuss all this, at the particular points I want her to know about. I'm so giddy for no reason.
Brett even mentioned the president whom I also found the most curious when I was doing my research throughout the years.
That is not to make imaginary the concerns radical Korean feminists have expressed in and about Korea; culturally and socially it is more dire between the genders there for good reason because of the social structures that are less open-minded in Korea. That doesn't mean women are all abandoning their values just to go against men; I think they're more rational in how they interpret the social issues they're facing and it's a more quiet resentment for how it is there behind all the glamor and idealization of Korea due to the intricate sectors of Korean society and the injustices faced there that go noted.
Many there hold a centrist view about it all kind of like here.
But yeah, even in Korean media and entertainment there are representations of the dating life and cultural shifts that still show that women in Korea aren't as against traditional life as I would compare to us. But for years I've noticed that Korean Cinema and television has been focusing on the criminal aspects and injustices in the Korean judicial and executive sphere with introspective kind of "entertainment." It's not really entertainment you know, but for lack of a better word for the kind of media I'm referring to; there's often mention of real injustices that the writers and often victims and those directly impacted wanted to expose. Still there are radical detractors and loudly opinionated people like here; still, I'd say most people who believe in feminism in Korea still care about cultural and traditional values to uphold most of the time, there's just an open-minded detraction from women and the very restrictive ideals very known about Korean and generally East Asian culture way back when 'til now. And even not even that long ago, like definitely potent into the late 1900s.
And it's just like how other commenters are talking about it; things beyond women and gender relations have swept the nation's political world, like corruption and the job market and general working culture.

To be fair, I lived there as an English teacher from 2007 to 2012 and it was a CRAZY sexist society. The girls I taught in kindergarten or 1st grade were often bubbly and had personalities. By middle school the girls were quiet, meek, invisible, laughing behind their hands. The beauty standards there were insane. Women were expected to be dressed to the nines at every hour of the day. If you gained weight, everyone else would point it out. Even non-Koreans didn't escape this. You might just get greeted in the elevator up to work, "Oh, you look like you are getting fat." (I was 130 pounds and fit). I went to work one day without make-up on and my boss (a woman) told me I looked tired and I should go put some make-up on.
Gay people were not allowed to be out. I played rugby there, and a lot of the non-Korean players were lesbians, and so I heard a lot about the lesbian scene in Seoul. There was one night club dedicated to it. Even then, there was a strict femme-butch pairing, as in, one was the masculine lesbian and one was the feminine one, and that one was still expected to wear make-up and frilly dresses and take on that role.
It was until recently a rigid society with girls encouraged to get plastic surgery for everything so they look perfect. They are also still supposed to excel in school, so they get that pressure as well on them from that. I had third graders who were in after school cram classes until 8 or 9 pm and then had to go home and do homework and were back up at 6 am. I am shocked they didn't crack sooner honestly. Then as mothers, their children's education is also all on them. So the success of their children at school is squarely on their shoulders. They do all the housework and child rearing but now they also have to work because everything is so expensive. The men also do work all the time, but they do not have to attend to household or children chores. They also get a free pass to go out drinking and to massage parlours while the women have to look the other way.
I for one, am SO happy to hear the Korean women are pushing back. This is their take off the hijab moment we should all be hoping for our Middle Eastern sisters who WANT to do so. The point is having the choice. Korean women didn't have the choice, so yes, Korean girls not wearing make up and shaving their heads was a radical, brave move. Backlashes are often pretty intense and so refusing to get married and have kids altogether is an equal and opposite reaction to the expectations put upon them by their society until very recently.
I see us in the West as having nearly completed our own backlash and now perhaps we can find some balance, so we don't go off the rails, and can have a healthy relationship that is based on choice with marriage and having kids. But meanwhile, have some more compassion for how hard it was for Korean girls to push back and how recent that was. Let's hope they find balance!

The BBC recently released a documentary on UA-cam which details about the Burning Sun incident and how the female guests were treated there...
    Watch it.
The girl who talked about her assault had me in tears. I don't know who she is but I feel HORRIBLE for her.
South Korea is plagued with plenty of issues and I think that the 4B movement should be looked at from so many other perspectives.

Even if there are issues over there, such an extreme shift won't help, and will only harm the situation.

@@renaissancenovice7202 I get what you want to say, I do. But the situation in Korea is a little more complicated than us people in the West probably know. Ofc there are people who want to twist the story to fit their agenda.
But South Korea has too many of these incidents.

Hear hear, you CANT look at this from such a US centric lense. Sometimes americans miss the mark so badly just because they assume other countries are like them😅

well, I follow tons of Korean beauty gurus (jeje) and most of them just state that they wouldn’t marry a Korean or Japanese guy because of the cheating culture, but if they find someone that’s worth it they would 100% be with that person. the marriage and birth rate goes down in terms of full Korean couples but with Korean-Foreigner couples it goes up. a lot of males in SK and Japan are just disgusting just like all around the world but the amount of sex violence, hidden cameras (in public spaces, hotel rooms and between couples, obviously without consent) it’s really alarming. there has been a lot of cases of full violence leading to murder bt 2022-2024 and the police does absolutely nothing.

To be fair women in South Korea get far worse treatment than those in America. Assault cases aren’t taken as seriously by the law and a lot of the time male assaulters and rapists are given very short sentences as they were drunk and deemed “not accountable” for their actions. In addition to this Korean women always have to live in fear of being filmed inappropriately by the men or hidden cameras installed in bathrooms or changing rooms by men. Whilst it’s easy to deem this movement drastic it’s important to remember the women’s treatment varies a lot from country to country and that a lot of these Korean women are doing this as a result of the terrible treatment they have experienced at the hands of men.

Brett's take on the matter is so 'American'.(viewing the World according to their molds & standards) I highly recommend to watch the Asian Boss's interview of a female Korean journalist on the matter.
Least she could have done was watched that interview & then made this video
