I could have picked 5 games from the Atari 2600 or Commodore 64 but I didn’t just want the first games I played but those that changed how I thought about video games.
Impossible Mission (1984, C64): I played so many C64 games, DRM didn’t exist and game collections easy to build up. But this one has stuck with me my whole life. The gameplay, the difficulty, the sound design, the digitized voice use. It was iconic, and no matter how many times I lost (I never beat it) I would always come back to it.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World (1990, SMS2): the first console I had of the next generation, and it had a game built in. A game we didn’t have to rent or borrow? Perfect. We weren’t Mario kids, we were Alex Kidds. Memories of hours spent watching my siblings play until I could get a turn it was the first time we worked together to beat a game with maps and strategies written out.
Super Mario Kart (1992, SNES): there had been racing games before, even multiplayer, but nothing like this. It was a battle like no other until Goldeneye came along. We even got our non-gaming mum to give it a try.
Wolfenstein 3D (1992, PC): the age of the FPS had begun. I’d played the 2d side scrollers but this was something else. It was fast, brutal, and surprisingly silly at times. I also spent way too many hours pressing on random walls looking for secrets.
Call of Duty (2003, PC): I know BF1942 came out first, and I played plenty of that, but the first CoD (especially the UO expansion), became my life. I built my first computer that was wholly mine just to play this, and every weekend was a LAN party or LAN cafe with friends, red bull, and bad food, playing non-stop. I know I’m not alone in thinking modern shooters have gone a different way, too fast, too focused on the gimmick and the cosmetics, they lost something fun. And then of course WoW sucked me in…
My list would be:
1. Super Mario Land - my first video game gifted by my gma and got me into gaming.
2. LoZ: Link to the Past - played at a cousin's house with them a lot, eventually got me to get an SNES and got me into more complex games.
3. Pokemon Red - got me into RPGs which has become one of my favorite genres.
4. Ogre Battle 64 - deepened my love for the RPG genre and heavy unit customization.
5. Team Fortress 2 - got me into PC games for the first time.
This one really had me thinking because some of the most influential games in my life happened later than my childhood. But if we’re talking pre-high school graduation…
-Street Fighter II on my uncle’s SNES was one of the go-to ways to entertain tiny me in the mid 2000s and one of the first games I ever played
-Super Mario 64 was the first game I can think of that was mine, and it got me being social with others besides just my family
-Pokémon Sapphire was my first real Pokémon game-I’ve played stadium on rent and played Gen II on a cousin’s cartridge, but Sapphire was mine
-Fire Emblem for GBA (and the whole series, really) is my favorite series ever and got me into my favorite genre of games
-Guitar Hero II was a later childhood game, but it got me into rhythm games and as a series kept me entertained for hours upon hours for years of my life (I’d still be playing if the genre didn’t get oversaturated)
My five games in no particular order would be:
1. Dora's Adventure to the Purple Planet (yes lol). I played the heck out of this game, replaying it over and over.
2. Professor Layton series, but specifically The Unnwound Future. This was the game that got me into writing fan ficts, and I had a huge crush on "future Luke."
3. Scooby Doo Night of 100 Frights. I replayed this game a ton as well, but the first time through my mom and I played it together which is a really special memory.
4. Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming. Yes the random puzzle game lol. It was the first Harvest Moon game I ever got and although it was a random spin off it got me into one of my favorite series of all time.
5. Kingdom Hearts II. My dad and I played it together, which is really special. It also eventually got me into the Final Fantasy games.
Love the video! I'm stretching my list a little to include games I would've played into my teenage years/early adulthood but oh well, I guess I can still consider it apart of my childhood. My list in no particular order would HONESTLY be:
1. Pikmin 1: Pikmin might honestly be the first video game series I ever played as a kid, so it's kind of the game that started it all for me. I remember sitting in the living room and hogging the TV for hoursss trying to collect all of the ship parts and protect all of my Pikmin. Nonetheless, I wasn't very good at the game (I always wasted so much time trying to figure out where the ship parts were) and I never beat it as a kid. But I really like to think that game taught me an appreciation for nature and the natural world in general.
2. Pokemon Black: God, I loved this game as a kid. My brother used to be a big Pokemon fan as a kid as well, so I would always borrow his game cartridges and play on his save file. I got Pokemon Black as a present in the spring of 2011 and quickly fell in love with everything Pokemon-related. I watched the anime, collected the cards, and bought some of the plushies. I used to sit for hours at a time, scrolling through the Pokedex and drawing all of the Pokemon I saw in my little notebook. Eventually, I even started to draw some of my own (even though I was NOT an artist). Pokemon Black really inspired me to be creative and draw a lot, I will always remember the fond memories of me going to school and showing my friends my weird Pokemon creations lol.
3. Animal Crossing: I had trouble deciding which Animal Crossing game to choose, so I just chose the whole series in general lol. Animal Crossing is still one of my favorite series to this day and I will always remember the friendships I've made through the game. With Animal Crossing: New Leaf, I started to get more involved in the online community and I've forged so many great friendships through that way. Animal Crossing helped me make friends at a time when I was very insecure about myself and it's crazy to think about how many close people I've met through playing the game. Also, playing with friends in AC:NH during the pandemic helped me TREMENDOUSLY during a weird and lonely time, so I'll always remember that as well.
4. Splatoon: When thinking about games that have had a huge impact on my life, I have to admit that Splatoon didn't really pop into my head at first. I mean, I like the Splatoon games but that series came at more of a later stage in my life compared to games like Pikmin or Pokemon. However, I started to think about the events that occured in my life during a time when I used to play Splatoon religiously. My parents unfortunately split and divorced, which had a really profound effect on me during that time. Also during that time, a huge hailstorm hit my house and flooded everything. I lost a lot of stuff in that flood and I had to spent the next year sleeping on a couch in the living room before the damage could be repaired. During such a crazy time in my life, I would sit in a corner with a few pillows and a blanket and play so much Splatoon, it was like my escape from the world. I will always be grateful that Splatoon was there for me during such a rough time.
5. Club Penguin: Okay, I know this one is maybe a bit of a bizarre (and also possibly embarassing?) choice but I literally used to be addicted to Club Penguin as a kid, no joke lol. Every single day after school, I would hop on the famiily computer and log on to see what crazy shenanigans I would get up to. At the peak of Club Penguin, there were so many players and I formed a lot of fond memories meeting new people and doing weird things, like going to people's igloos and crashing their "parties." It felt like everyday I could expect something new and I think a lot of that has to do with the people who played Club Penguin as well. Maybe this is a little sad, but I think Club Penguin helped me learn how to make friends and be goofy lol.
So, yeah... that's probably my list. Are these the greatest games out there in my opinion? Yes, of course! No, actually, I'm just kidding lol but these games mean a lot to me and I'll always remember them for making me who I am and defining my childhood gaming experience.
Legend of zelda ocarina of time got me interested in the beginning. I didn't realize I was a gamer myself yet, but I loved watching my dad play it as a child. Many years later, my dad randomly got me a pc game called grey matter and I just remember I was so hooked on playing it and it brought out a joy in me that I'd never been able to pull out with 'things' before. He thought it seemed like a game I would enjoy and the stars aligned lol it was so me that it sparked my inner gamer. Then I got myself a new 3ds xl a few years later and my third game I would say was animal crossing happy home designer. My fourth and fifth games werent from my childhood, but they are probably what solidified gaming as my favorite thing to spend my free time doing. Those were wizard101 (this game helped me learn that I really enjoy playing strategy and turn based style games) and animal crossing new horizons (this is what led me to get my own switch).

Trying to separate my favorite games from influential ones is a lot harder than I thought. Two that do come to mind has to be the original Super Mario Bros on the NES. My earliest gaming memories involve watching my older sister playing it on our living room television and that seems to be one of those core memories that just always stuck with me.
The second one has to be Maru's Mission for the original Gameboy. Not an amazing game by any means, but it was one of the first games I ever beat in one sitting and that always stuck with me. I even remember a phone number popping up on the scene asking you to call the publisher to let them know what you thought of the game. Never did call the number though.
Love that you've got a great appreciation for fantastic RPGs but I had NO idea that you were so into Tetris! I've got the "Top 10 Tetris Ports" video on my channel you'd probably dig, as I also got into Tetris from the NES version, much more than the Gameboy version. Great video too of course!

My games that influenced me the most things to my brother.
1. Mario bros for the will
2. Mario 3d world for will U
3. Mario cart. Me and my brother are seven years apart and i'm the youngest and my other brother a ten years older than me. And they always let me play these three games with them.
4. Harvest moon the grand bazaar for the ds. My brother got it for me for a gift for christmas The year that we losted my grandmother and I played it all the time. It was the first game that I truly fell in love with. And one I still think about.
5. Will fit pluse. Me and my other grandmother used to play it a lot When I was younger

Great video concept. And great video as usual. Videogame nostalgia is great. And for people who grew up poor like myself, the nostalgia hits harder when you buy an old console or game, because you can remember exactly how you felt as a kid seeing it in the store in those demo displays. Except now you get to play it. I remember the first console I ever got was a SpongeBob GBA as a gift from my aunt. And of course in typical sibling fashion, I didn’t want to share it, and the ONE time I let my brother play it, he smashed it against the wall and the top half was just dangling by the cable. 😂 I can laugh now but I was mad about that for a decade at least.

Mines would probably be Mario kart Wii, Wii play, Wii party, Mario 64 DS and minecraft, pretty weird but they’re my first memories of games that I played religiously lol
You're videos never disappoint, I always loved tetris too. I still have mario kart double dash and mario sunshine on gamecube. I had quite a bit of gamecube games but I quit playing gamecube because how expensive the games are these days. The psp is good but overtime I got tired of it because the battery life isn't the best on it idk if I'm the only one that deal with that issue or that's how everyone had dealt with it back then.
Just looking at some of the comments made me feel old AF lol, I'm definitely part of the older/oldest demographic in here XD.
Whatever, here goes my list, you said most influential, so
1 - Mario Bros, yes, the first one, this is the first game I ever saw and the first one I ever played, so it's the spark that ignited my passion for videogames
2 - The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past, this was the first "long game" that I was able to beat by myself, at the time It felt like a big accomplishment, also the first Zelda I ever beat, and got me interested in the franchise
3 - Megaman X1, X2 and X3, I had to lump them together, I still play these games to this day, and I'll probably still play them until the day I die. I was lucky enough that a friend of my brother, would let us borrow the games from time to time, apparently X3 is a pretty rare game, I only learned about this, like five years ago. I do have a physical copy of all three snes cartridges. These games really influenced my taste in music, I do blame them for my love of power metal and symphonic metal.
4 - Pokemon blue, I just had an awesome experience playing this game, I played it back when the show had just recently come out, and It made me live my dream of being a better pokemon trainer than Ash Ketchum lol, he made such bad choices. In a way I feel like the game got me the opportunity to make things right and get the actual better pokemon.that he never caught. Only until this last season I saw he had a Gengar, bro!, I was rocking my Gengar since back in 2000
5 - Street Fighter 2, this one was like the first Fighting game I took seriously, and I would try to get better at, to beat my brothers and friends. Honorable mentions, we had Super Street Fighter afterwards and then Alpha 2 on the snes, to this day, I have no Idea how I managed to randomly find that game at a game store I went to with my Dad, amazing game.

Super Princess Peach was my favorite childhood game, I know it’s controversial but I had such a blast with the mechanics! Other than that, Mario Kart Wii, Shrek 2 on the gameboy, Wii Sports and Nintendogs❤️
thanks to my brothers having Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker, and then me getting my own GameCube that came bundled w/ Melee, I almost feel I was set to go down this gaming path that I did

such a fun concept, loved going down memory lane. my list, in no particular order:
1) Kingdom Hearts: this was my first RPG, and I think this was the first game that made me realize how much I love video games. I was definitely too young to be playing it, but I had so much fun exploring the idea of a game about some of my Disney faves and I’ve been such a fan of the franchise ever since.
2) Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned For Danger: This was the first Nancy Drew game I played, and where my love for point and click games started. My sister and I would spend hours playing the ND games, and we even played with my mom and aunt too. My sister and I still get together to this day to have ND days, and it’s one of my favorite memories.
3) Simpsons: Hit & Run / Road Rage: I know these are two games but these two were such a joy back in the day. My mom who is not someone who is normally into gaming, she would sit and play this with me for HOURS. She is a die hard Simpson fan so it was so cool to see the joy she felt for something I loved while being with a medium she enjoys.
4) Detective Barbie: The Mystery Of The Carnival Caper: this was my first real game ever, and man the memory it holds is crazy. I can still hear the soundtrack when I think about this game, and I’m so grateful I started my gaming journey with a point and click game - especially since they’re such an important genre for me to this day.
5) SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom: this game was such a hit with all the kids I grew up with in the neighborhood. I remember summer days would be spent running around outside and then after dinner, all the kids would meet at one of our houses and all sit around the tv and play this game. Even the parents would come and play too. It was another moment where I saw people brought together by video games.
i never had a console in the 80 s i played snippits of some games at friends sometimes . i played (it was my sisters) a little handheld game i dont no what those are called it was a little figure that needed to cross the water in rowing boat being attact by coconuts and a shark and some fire . when i was 18 my ex in the 90 ,s had a sega and we rented sometimes a nes and then played zelda after that never really piayed .only in the beginning of the year i bought a switch lite and the first two games i bought where zelda and harvestella .
I've been seeing it around a lot too and I love it as a concept. My top 5 would have to probably be Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10 and Kingdom Hearts. Throw in the legend of dragoon as an honorable mention. If I'm actively trying to have a diverse list maybe FF7, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 3, Kingdom hearts and pokemon gold
Okay lets see. I got firsts games. 1. Mulan the videogame. Yeah 2. Call of Duty 6 hugely influenced my multiplayer gaming habits. 3. Metroid Prime. It made me feel so differently about videogames. They are not just fun for fun's sake they can be challenge. 4.The tales of Vesperia al the tales have cheesy stories and dialog but something about it made really like the characters and how the stories end. 5. Auditorium it was a flash game. It was part puzzle solving and part music. It was just the perfect mix.

I did play the NES (which I still have!) but was slightly too young to call any of those games overly influential. The SNES was the first console I was fully immersed in. This brings me onto two games from my childhood that I played incessantly:
1. Street Fighter II Turbo - This was the one where you could play as Bison, Vega, Sagat and Balrog. I was addicted to this and would play as Ryu always. The themes from each of the stages still play in my mind.
2. Donkey Kong Country - What a game this is. I loved the platforming, how easy it was to play and how you could get the animals to help you through stages. It was atmospheric and how good was/is the music.
3. Final Fantasy VII - This is the game that set off my love for RPGs that continues up until today. I can remember the day my grandad got me this. The polygon visuals haven't aged so well but I would stay up so late playing this, I was mesmerised. I'm even the same with the remakes! I loved the story, the music, the characters etc.
4. Metal Gear Solid - Along with FFVII, MGS was the other PS title that blew me away. The voice acting, the cutscenes, the story, Gray Fox as the Ninja being the best video game character I ever saw until that point. Amazing.
5. Streets of Rage 2 - My friend always had a Mega Drive as opposed to me who has a SNES. Whenever we played Mega Drive, we'd always play Streets of Rage 2. That was my first experience of side scrolling beat em ups and I've loved them ever since. I'm a sucker for any that come out.
My 5 influential games:
Rogue Legacy: this game got me into rogue-likes 😵💫 i remember doing my hw after school and then using the family pc (in the living room) to play Rogue Legacy, nuclear throne, risk of rain, Isaac, spelunky, etc. But RL was the gateway for sure
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days: the only kingdom hearts game i beat LOL. I remember being under my covers at night, just bawling my eyes out at the ending 🥹. I remember feeling so satisfied that i made it to the end of the game. I wasn’t that good at games back then, so I didn’t finish games often
Bubble Bobble on GBC: the yellow Pokémon GBC. Car rides. Replaying the first 4 levels for hours cause I was so bad at it 😭 and I didn’t even know how to use the passwords to start at a later level
Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3: I got a GBA for Christmas and this game. It was the first time I was like “this is my console and this is my game 😤"
And I really can’t pick another game, this is way harder than I thought ugh. Umm maybe the Japanese version of Pokémon Black on my R4, the English version hadn’t released yet. I felt so cool and tapped into the video game community lmao I didn’t understand a word of Japanese, but i had sm fun!
Oh and honorable mention: TMNT: Turtles In Time Re-Shelled on XBLA. Such a random title, but this and Castle Crashers made me wanna go back and play more beat-em-ups (which is one of my fave genres now)
And Frogger’s Adventures: Temple of the Frog on GBA. All I remember is the music

1. Pokémon Pearl (I learned how to read to play it lol)

Okay I warn you these all are not good games but still iconic to 10-year old me:
1. Bratz Forever Diamondz
I never got far in this game, I only ran around the mall and changed my clothes, and I could still play this the whole day 🤣
2. Dogz on ps2
This was just the game I sunk in and dreamed about always when I didnt play it, and the same story, it took years to finish it because I didnt read English well
3. Singstar on ps2
I learned to sing better with it, and it was very essential for my mental health because I was bullied at that time, and one time I tricked that I was sick and I could stay home playing it, and the best part was that I was home alone and could sing freely 😂
4. GTA San Andreas
I dont know if its cheating but I really didnt play this but it was kind of an family event when we all watched when some of us played it, and I remember how fun it was even though probably very violent but we didnt care about it too much which makes me happy now, because otherwise I wouldnt have these memories
5. The Sims 2
First my older brother played it and I just watched but I was so into it still, then I got to play it but our computer had to be started through boot every time and I think I messed it and they forbid my pc gaming but because I got to see him playing it, I played the Sims 3 and 4 later on my very own pc that I couldnt break 😂
No. 1 super mario world for snes first mario game I played and the first game that got me into my 31 yrs of gaming No. 2 resident evil 2 ps1 the very first resident evil game I played and now I have all the resident evil games except resident evil Gaiden No. 3 silent hill ps1 the very first survival horror game that scared the bejesus out of me as a kid and I still won't play to this day No. 4 pokemon silver gbc the first game that I had my mom buy me a gbc just to play it I love pokemon silver but now I don't own it anymore and replaced it with pokemon crystal the definitive edition of pokemon silver and gold No 5 final fantasy 7 the first final fantasy game I played and got me into the series took me a whole year to beat my fav final fantasy is final fantasy 5 snes and a special shout out to final fantasy tactics ps1 the very first srpg I've played and still play today cause it's very addicting I love final fantasy tactics.
I'm 45 😊 so one of the first games I remember having an impact on me is gold cartridge Zelda. I would watch my mom play it. (I wasn't allowed to touch it. 😂) I was impressed by the large world. My mother would physically draw out maps so she wouldn't get lost. I did play early Final Fantasy. Every time a new one came out, I would be so amazed by the improved graphics for the summons. I would think that there was no way they can top these graphics. 😅
There was a big gap in life when I didn't play, but when I started up again I learned that I didn't like Zelda or Final Fantasy games (except XIII). 😂😂 But that doesn't stop me from buying all the Zelda and Final Fantasy games even though I don't really play them. I just feel good having them in my collection. I'm sure its the nostalgia.
Also, my mother is 67 and she still plays. She is almost finished with Ghost of Tsushima. 😊 The only thing we talk about are games. Otherwise we probably wouldn't talk honestly. Video games has brought us closer.
For me its
1. Super Mario 64. Just a beautiful game and I still love it
2. Smash Bros OG and I still love playing Smash
3. Pokemon Yellow. Yeah I still LOVE Pokemon lol
4. NFL Madden street games were a ton of fun too and I wish they were still around
5. Gran Turismo series of racing games too got me into liking cars too.
Honorable mention to Zelda series as you said too, amazing series. All of the ones I listed made me love gaming as a little kid. A couple other honorable mentions are Street Fighter 4 which was the first time I played the series before I went back and played the collection series of playing the OG Street Fighter games. Mortal Kombat is also a game series I love a ton too. I'm also big on Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons. The Harvest Moon 64 was my first of the series :D
