unfortunately the navy's atmanirbhar initiative hasn't really flourished as intended . . . for e.g. Indian Navy's very first indigenous 46,320 ton STOBAR aircraft carrier is flawed by compromise . . . the navy's much anticipated P75 future nuclear powered submarine program is delayed since 2002 . . . the navy should pursue more SSGN and we need these SSGN now . . . but we're already running 20 years too late compared to our adversaries who have amassed a whole fleet of SSGN & SSGN since the mid 1980s . . . India's first indigenous nuclear powered submarine came into being in 2012 . . . note the timeline gap between us & our adversaries . . .

For the first time in history our domestic Industry has a good product even before the army put up procurement proposal. It's on time, without any issues and already inducted in the army and CRPF and here goes the MOD and army to buy an imported maal.

I have been following Defense news closely since 2001. It was a moment of Joy for all of us when the LCA Tejas Technology Demonstrator had taken to skies of Bengaluru (It was called HAL - ADA LCA then) with its landing gear down. So many cheers!!!
While the Tejas saga unfolded sometimes causing elation and at most times despair, we looked to another indigenous projects like the Arjun Tank. This was much before there were knowledgeable UA-cam Defense Channels that focused on India. A few enthusiasts like us used to gather around Forums Like Bharat Rakshak (now almost defunct)
But unfortunately, Arjun Tank fell flat due to the Import Lobby. It was spectacular how it was sabotaged.
It was set up for failure from get go. First a case of perhaps deliberate Brochuritis (copy pasting the highest specs from all brochures in the GSQR) When the tank was ready it was dubbed heavy. No one was ready to concede that it was heavy in the first place due to all the demands that were placed by IA itself. IA had envisaged it to go toe to toe with early Abrams which were about to be delivered to Pakistan.
Then it was said that it was inferior to the Russian T-90 when the DRDO and HFV pushed for comparative trials, planted media leaks claimed that it broke its Torsion Bar in the Desert, while it had no Torsion Bar unlike T90s. Comptroller Generals Audit showed it was faster, more accurate, had lesser Ground Pressure and was more rugged and durable than T90s and had better crew protection, but it was still rejected claiming the Railway Carriages and Bridges were not strong enough to carry it and follow on orders of T90 were given, while IA asked for further improvement on the T90 which along with the first version would equip 2 regiments only.
Nowadays whenever the discussion of Arjun comes up, newbies latch on to old talking points without knowing any details.
Anyways, at least in those days there was the UPA govt in power, so it was easy for us enthusiasts to blame the Russian Natasha effect and wait for better days to come.
But it is just sad that even after so many years and so much focus on Make in India yet again things have come a full circle and Import Lobby is winning again with this Stryker and Javelin. I feel afraid that Su 57 might also make a comeback pushing back the AMCA.
The way in spite of low support for long, the team kept the LCA project going is commendable and how the Kaveri survived with no funding is a testament to the dedication of our Defense Scientists and Engineers. It was almost arm twisting that got IAF to accept Tejas MKI (first IOC and then FOC) The forces always look at Defense Production from the lens of Seller Vs Buyer but somehow the parameters can be little easy for Imports (Foren Maal as we used to call it then) The jointness in developmental Iterations was always missing, unlike China or even Pakistan.
I look forward to being proved wrong. I hope that how IA has incorporated OFB and L&T Guns apart from the M777s, IA incorporates Tata Kestrel along with adding numbers for Mahindra and Kalyani M4 (for tactical Ops)
Look forward to Indian Forces Fielding Full Fledged Tejas MkII, Prachand, Dhruv, LUH, Arjun, Zorawar, AMCA and Indian A2A and A2G and anti-tank missiles. Hope this time the Import Lobby doesn't win.
IA and IAF both need to get behind Indigenous Weapon Systems something IN has done for long. We need to become an exporter and not remain an importer to project power and influence.

Indian army has some serious dislike for indigenous platforms. If USA made Stryker can be modified as per Indian army " Requirements " so can be our indigenous TATA Whap. First IA gave DRDO requirement of a vehicle that is amphibious and mobile on high altitudes. Now IA buying a vehicle that is NOT amphibious and has less power to weight ratio than DRDO WhaP so is less mobile than WhaP in high altitudes. Reason given... It has more protection.. Then why didn't IA ask DRDO for more protection instead of amphibious capability and high mobility. The game is always the same, change requirements at last minute and use the new requirements to justify imports.
This shows how corrupted officers are there in Indian army who prefer foreign products even if they have indigenous alternative with same catagory😡

Also, i think this is some form of balancing act. Like, India is buying Javelin and Stryker. On the other hand, India is eyeing Russia's Su-57 felon for MRFA. This is more like trying to please both of them, so no one would get upset.

If IA wants to justify not allowing WhAP to be considered for the IFV role, I think its a massive failure on the part of the team that defined the GSQRs for the WhAP.
There needs to be an deep look into the GSQR defining process and RCAs identified for why such an obvious input was missed.
Also, if the C-130J is unable to airlift WhAPs then the ability to airlift the WhAP class of loads *should* be made mandatory as part of the ASQRs for the MTA. Else a few years down the line, we would be looking for bigger MTAs because no one saw the IFV weight issue.
I thought the office of the CDS would have been looking to identify such cross-service synergies.
All in all, IA should be held accountable for creating poor/impractical GSQRs, asking for unobtanium and then settling for piecemeal and expensive foreign options.
It is the new strategy of USA to undermine Indigenous products. Give small technology transfer of old weapons and make us dependent on them. Always go for indigenous products.
