- ruin is officially out on youtube (earlier than planned, because SOME PEOPLE have been posting it willy nilly :/) so i made a lyric video for my favourite song in the album! feat. my attempt at deciphering whatever the hell is going on after the first chorus lmao
*Do you like my dress? It's got ~pockets~*
Man, I wish there were more dresses like this
i love how at the very end of the song, the chorus of voices singing fades, and it’s only joey singing with her, like she’s given up and joey is there to comfort her
„And when I think I‘m fine you‘ll visit, and then you happen to me, you happen to me, all over again.“
I felt that.
I really don't... I really don't... I really don't want to see her again.
I haven't heard this song or this band before, but this was randomly at the top of my music playlist. I think the universe - or UA-cam - is trying to tell me something.
this song started off soft and then got more epic and great, Amazing Devil really makes some amazing music
This band has several songs that start soft and then build. Other than this one, my favorite is "farewell wanderlust"
*I tried, i really fucking tried*
I felt that. I've come across with their music earlier this year and they're amazing
Amazing Devil
This song moves something in me every time
Wow, really love this song! First song I've heard from them actually and such a great first impression. Definitely gives me vibes of a character turning into a villain/turning against the protagonists ♡
Agreed! My first song was The Horror and The Wild and I've been obsessed with them ever since! They definitely deserve way more recognition!
Ah, farewell wanderlust for me. Been a fan ever since!
elsa’s song was the the first for me, and i thought it sounded like it’s story based, so i listened to more of them and i fell in love because they all seem to have another, deeper meaning
this is how it feels to create a character that starts off happy and falls in love before losing everything and coming out of the wreckage something they never thought theyd be
hearing this song played live in concert would be fucking phenomenal. I think I would pass out or something
Whenever I hear this song, I picture two girls in some historical setting. They live right outside the same forest, but if they'd ever met before, they didn't even learn each other's names.
They both have... less than ideal home lives. One's from a rich family, but can't inherit by virtue of being a girl, and her parents make no secret of not having wanted her. The other's father will only accept a mini-me for a child and openly doesn't care about her as a result. "We're both unwanted daughters" and they bond over this at some point.
So one of the girls is in the woods one day in spring/early summer, and she gets the feeling she should go to the river that she sometimes splashes in. When she gets closer, she sees something shining in the distance. She arrives there and at first she doesn't see anything, but then when she's in the water, she sees the other girl in her reflection and looks up and there she is, having hid for a moment, that shine was from a necklace she was wearing. So they're both standing in the river and they start talking and lose track of time and before they know it they're watching the sunset together.
They both feel like the woods are calling to them to go back, and they start meeting up more often and fall in love. They're spending every spare moment in the woods together and they're swimming and splashing in the river, collecting pretty rocks, picking flowers, lying in the grass holding hands talking about running away and living together someday.
They're dreaming of each other and writing letters and they're each the best thing the other's had and they're so so reckless, climbing trees and forgetting to take the rocks out of their pockets and falling asleep in clearings and stargazing until one of them goes oh crap we've been here so long it's night they're gonna wonder where I am. Never checking to see if it might rain. Hanging out in the river when they know there's a current. There's whispers about how that girl keeps spending so much time in the woods and returning with grass stains and getting that look on her face.
And maybe it was the rainstorm intensifying the river, or maybe it was the amount of pretty stones she'd put in her pockets, or maybe her family deliberately put out a heavy dress for her because they wanted to get rid of her more than ever and knew she went into the river a lot because she'd come home with barely concealed wet hair and had discovered rocks in her pockets before, or maybe it was the two going deeper into the river without thinking and the one who had the necklace at the start gets caught in the current.
Her lover tries as hard as she can to save her, but she fails and watches her drown in the river.
This whole thing takes place in flashbacks from the surviving woman's perspective. At a few points in the song it switches to present day, and present day she's older looking (and doesn't live with her family anymore) and also it's late fall. She's wearing a yellow and white dress in the flashbacks and a darker dress in present day. She doesn't go to the river as often anymore, but in the present day scenes she's going there with flowers. After the death scene, we find out she's going to the river with flowers in order to leave them on the riverbed, where she's got a pile of flowers right by where the two first met.
I suffer from PTSD from abusers and borderline personality disorder, in addition to having fought a battle against addiction. And by the gods, this song speaks to all of that...
Okay, I love that I’m not the only one trying to decipher that bit. Heres what I hear (using yours to help me out a smidge bit) Just Madeleine’s part though. I have so little of a clue on what Joey is saying.
2:29
“Hey you. You thief. Yeah, you. You. Stop misleading me, wasting all of these days and nights. I see who you are…”
I hear (in Madeleine’s part) something about dreams and then around 2:52 “and take the whole”??
Joey’s bit I get
2:32
“I need you, I know what I fucking signed” and thats IT.
Would absolutely love confirmation one day from them about what they’re saying because boy oh boy do I love having fake arguments with nobody while I’m driving around to places to this song haha
I was singing along but instead of "fingers on your sleeping hand" I accidentally sang "sleepers on your finging hand"
Feels like a song about struggling with addiction/alcoholism
The entire album has that "wine" theming going on too
God, I love this song! I'm ready to listen to it again and again and again.
Really loved your lyrics video. It so beautiful in it's minimalistic style.
And the lines for backing Choir 👍
U h
Idk how long of a comment this will be or how much I'll vent to this but might as well
This song means so fucking much to me even if I haven't known it for that long. To me it makes me imagine meeting myself at different ages and seeing them "die" to my abusers at that time. If it was just that to the song I'd prob avoid it but there's also this triumphant aura, like I should be *proud* for making it this far! The line "shoulder the skies" make me feel powerful, like I'm fighting something like the sky, like I'm blocking it's hits. It makes me feel hope kinda
Like despite everything I'll be okay, I've made it this far, why shouldn't I be able to make it further?
So yeah, the song makes me feel hope despite it reminding me that I lost parts of me I want back, like despretely want back. But I've made it this long without those parts so I'll be okay
Ty for reading my lil ramble :3
YES, hope and triumph! Thank you for sharing, I got much the same seaming from it. This song gets me hyped, it makes me feel powerful and timeless 💜
Absolutely!!! I feel very similar! That’s what I love about their music… so much of it is covering deeply heartbreaking themes and yet there’s so much hope. Every single line of this song hits ❤️
Anybody know what message Madeleine is trying to convey to us in this piece? Or is it one of those songs where meaning is derived by the one which hears it?
I think it makes more sense when you listen to the whole thing. For example, the first song makes mention of embers and fire when both singers describe burning for each other, giving eachother light. But in this song, it was too much. The passion burned her and she ran to the river. She also describes seeing herself in the water and treats her past self as a different person ("I watched that woman drown").
The fox and the rain also seem to be connected as they both howl.
Songs in the album repeat the imagery of glowing, burning, rain, stones, earth, glass, and wine. I'm still trying to decipher it myself
I saw the whole album as the story of a writer and his muse (a childhood friend and maybe lover), and the muse eventually burned out and turned to alcohol as a result of her depression. However the writer still saw her struggle as a source of beauty/inspiration
I'm biased as hell, but I'm hearing the story of a woman who was abused in some way and finds her own strength, gets ready to stand up for herself
I get that from the image of "drowning" her former self, opening her eyes, all of that, plus the line "I think I'm fine, and then you happen to me"
I personally interpret it as a woman struggling with addiction, especially alcoholism as it mentions "drank too much" and "wringing the embers from her liver".
When she looks at the water she sees what she became "I see a face I don't want look back" and doesn't understand how it came to be
I also think the fox represents her trying to change "When that fox howls I'll Howl with it and in it's cries I'll find and end"
And the rain represents the stress and problems of life causing her to drink again "but the rain kept coming down, I watched that woman drown"
The conversation in between the verses kinda sounds like a confrontation from her lover too but that might be reading too much into it
All of their songs are this complex with both all and no meaning at all
i really appreciate these lyric videos!!!
This song is at the top of my playlist… I listened to TAD for the first time about a month ago and I couldn’t listen to anything else since… they’re really amazing
This is just so high class!
Heyy this is so good! Are you gonna do all songs from the album? the Calling is my fav too, I'd love to see you do one for The Drinking Song or Secret Worlds. These are my 2nd and third favourite respectively!!
Thank you! I might consider doing a video for Secret Worlds later :)

Masterpiece!
HHHH I LOVE THE AMAZING DEVIL SO MUCHHHHH
I started crying incredibly hard when i first heard this. It is so incredibly trans i cant even describe. Its like trying to come to terms with your identity even you have support from others. It can feel like your literally drowning and the only way to break that is too alow it and "let the rain fall"
Edit: also i started dating someone called "fox" right before i heard this. That doesnt mean anything i just find it cute.
To me it was about addiction. Drugs, alcoholism. The older woman sees her own reflection and doesn't recognize it anymore because of what the addiction's done to her. The song is a conversation between her and herself, and the alcohol/drug.
This song happened to me...
Do you know what I can look up to get songs with a similar guitar riff? I never know what to look up and country certainly doesn't have the same feel
I think this would be considered more folk rock or alt folk
i have recently began obssessing with TAD and now everything else sounds boring if anyone has recs similar to them please tell me
as someone who's genderfluid, most relatable part of the song to me is at 3:52 "Do you like my dress, it's got pockets."
like, that's just a mood.
i was expecting 1:33, because i’m trans masc and that hit hard
@@0p0ssum that's very true, I felt the same way for a long time.
But
The pure jou and excitement from finding a cute dress WITH pockets cannot be ignored.
France Hetalia is a The Amazing Devil fan as well??? I love seeing hetalia fans out in the wild
This song is so trans-coded, I love it
IKR RIGHT the image of joey batey being an unwanted daughter was also very silly to me, but in other songs he also seems very gnc so i get it
