Fun fact: Small death or "La petite mort" is an analogy coined somewhere around 1882 used to describe the sensation of "brief unconsciousness" after an orgasm.
I once dated a girl in the worst moment in my life. Literally freshly disowned, kicked out of my home, poor, and minutes away from dropping out of school. I Met this insane, mean girl. She meant nothing but chaos, and I fell so hard for her. We were evil together. She raised me up, then pulled me down. With her I felt alive. I had a purpose. I will miss her forever

It's 5am and it's raining outside but i am just sitting here on my bed blessing my ears with this song and admiring the fact that this unbelievably talented man lives on the same planet as me.
My interpretation of this song is Hozier’s celebration of love and sex, as linked with his other song ‘Take Me To Church’, it explores the pain and pleasure aspect of gay identity. As in the aforementioned song, Hozier has used the female pronoun to refer to homosexuality as well as his description of ‘my kin’ like the LGBT community being ‘bold’ and ‘boyful’ coining a neologism to describe boyishness which is often related to beauty. “Feeling more human” is very much like Hozier’s line “Only then I am human, only then I am complete.” and the caterpillar to butterfly aspect of them“Shaking the wings of their terrible youths” showing strength growing from pain which is a staple of a community which is widely rejected during youth. The eagerness to join in the community in the second line, “Calling to join them the wretched and joyful” furthers this song’s identity as a celebration of freedom, juxtaposing the “wretched” view from the outsider, and the joyful view of the insider. Showing how differently they define the LGBT community. “And lease this confusion, I'll wander the concrete Wonder if better now having survived Jarring of judgement and reasons defeat” The character has become unambiguous, he is no longer confused. Pondering how his rejection and judgement has hurt him and also made him stronger. The hate and judgement is confusing to the gay character because to him this is the most natural thing in the world. “Freshly disowned in some frozen devotion.” Referring again to Hozier’s antipathy to parental rejection and religious homophobia on these grounds, describing their faith as frozen and the feeling of abandonment ‘Fresh’ as if still hurting. However the sexual partner of the Angel of Small Death, as Negrusoiu Razvan pointed out, is a reference to orgasm, is described as having “her arms hard and lean” using the juxtaposition of the female pronoun to show her generally masculine features of being ‘hard and lean’ furthering the idea of a celebration of sex between men. The Codeine scene refers to codeine - a painkiller - a metaphor to suggest making love is a healing aspect, blocking out the pain the character has experienced. The song is by no mean short on indicators of the pain experienced in rejection and revelation of their gay identity but specifically it is a celebration of something homophobes might label as ‘sordid’ but it is being embraced by the ‘I’ personage. The consensual and willing nature of the sex is emphasised again and again. “no protest from me” “With her sweetened breath, and her tongue so mean” “hooked on her flesh” “The sweet heat of her breath in my mouth I'm alive” Finally the sexual imagery is unmistakable in the culmination of the pain and pleasure theme in the chorus. “Bloody and raw, but I swear it is sweet” defying the popular image of sex being solely negative, and the sweetness of the experience from the perspective of the participant. It encapsulates the pain but also is quick to emphasise this is an intensely pleasurable experience despite the pain. In conclusion, this song seems to be celebrating the natural, humanising, joyful effect of making love which explains the sexy tone and sensuality as well as the intense emotion of sex from the view of the gay person, examining how the pain and pleasure runs throughout the life of the LGBT community.
Whut? Hozier's gay? Apparently I only observe lyrics videos...I really have no idea even what he looks like. But my brain imagination has him looking like a higher testosterone content Russel Brand.
@@rottnlove He looks a bit like an Irish Jesus. He's never disclosed any membership of the LGBT community and co-wrote 'Someone New' with an ex-girlfriend, that doesn't rule out anything, from being Bi to regular old gay with a history. However, his debut hit was Take Me To Church, a condemnation of homophobia (see the video). When interviewed, someone said that many people take Church as a record as his coming out song, and he said “Yes, people do make that assumption (that I am gay), which is fine, but for me I don’t think it’s the point, you know what I mean. It doesn’t come into it what my sexual orientation is,” “Regardless of the sexual orientation behind a relationship, it is still a relationship and still love... So people are free to make any assumption they want, it’s grand,” he laughed. My observations were based on the fact he can make gay songs, Church is a testament to that. He makes songs about self-liberation all the time. And he has shown amazing empathy. In reality, it doesn't matter if he's gay or not, I personally believe he's straight/bi (hardcore ally too) and is very secure in it. This is actually just my interpretation of Hozier's song, and that's alright. It doesn't need to be Hozier's meaning, this is just a meaning and what it means to me. Everyone can have their own perception of songs even though it's written about something else. But this song speaks volumes to me, especially the first verse, as it's basically my crappy life, but it did not define me. I'm growing from it to be a stronger person 💪
I mean...to each his own..but I feel like this song is about substance abuse...it speaks to each aspect of that journey...being tempted by peers to experiment bc they seem to be enjoying it..then the total all consuming nature of it...then getting away and trying to live outside of it only to relapse...and over it all is this personification of addiction as something both sweet and terrible..full of pleasure and malicious intent...an Angel of small death...slowly killing you with gentle kisses

No doubt it's talking about lovers but...I think it's talking about how someone came out and was disowned, but they found someone who is the same sexual orientation and hooked up/moved in. Before they did meet and or the person is reminded of the days they wandered after being disowned unsure if they were going to be able to live while they are having a make out session but now they have a reason to live and that is there lover who gave their life meaning again
@@em12837 it's a misconception actually. He is a MLW so his songs are about that. Showing how differently they define the LGBT community.
“And lease this confusion, I'll wander the concrete
Wonder if better now having survived
Jarring of judgement and reasons defeat”
The character has become unambiguous, he is no longer confused. Pondering how his rejection and judgement has hurt him and also made him stronger. The hate and judgement is confusing to the gay character because to him this is the most natural thing in the world. “Freshly disowned in some frozen devotion.” Referring again to Hozier’s antipathy to parental rejection and religious homophobia on these grounds, describing their faith as frozen and the feeling of abandonment ‘Fresh’ as if still hurting.

pov: your teacher comes over to look at the computer and sees that youre listening to a song about sex and drugs.
This is a big bop
this song is one where you can slow it and it’s still good
When he said codeine I had war flashbacks to getting my wisdom teeth removed
lOVE IT
Good job
hozier is the musician ever
The title is wild
this song is pretty durn cool. :]
Damn I really miss her
I love the song
No doubt it's talking about lovers but...I think it's talking about how someone came out and was disowned, but they found someone who is the same sexual orientation and hooked up/moved in. Before they did meet and or the person is reminded of the days they wandered after being disowned unsure if they were going to be able to live while they are having a make out session but now they have a reason to live and that is there lover who gave their life meaning again
VERRY NICE SONG!!
I have broken your theory for I am in fact straight
For now...
@@tabathamoonstone8633 I legit font know...I only have gay friends...but they say I'm the gayest one...idk
you're the kind of straight ally that ends up so very gay, like, so so gay…
I think were the same person…
I just like Hozier's music. I didn't realise there were LGBTQ+ connotations.
@@em12837 it's a misconception actually. He is a MLW so his songs are about that. He just made a video spreading awareness about our LGBTQ problems and people did not read well the lyrics to understand what the song was about and how it has a separate meaning from the video.
I listen to Hozier and I do not think his songs has a queer connotation, though I feel happy he supports us ♡♡♡
Sounds like a song to get into a bar fight to…
