Thanks for the content as always, I always get a kick out of Venomoths many types. As for Doduo learning fly, in the Anime Falkner during his battle with Ash, said that since Dodrio can jump really well it may as well be flying, so I've always associated that with Doduo as well.
Love it, as always. As for re-ranking the tiers, you might automate that. You could use a bell curve and say "anything that is within 1/2 standard deviation of the mean is C-tier. Next 1/2 SD is B/D. Next is A/E. Next is S/Bruno".
You have started the new year off with a great video! I find it funny how Doduo has tri attack despite having two heads. I get that it isn't some three hit combo kinda thing, but just using three different elements to attack which also is confusing because it is a normal attack, but yeah it is funny to me personally.
For Dragonite, I'm thinking maybe it's better to just go for Body Slam instead of hoping for a Hyper Beam oneshot. You lose the chance to oneshot of course, but in exchange you don't have to take two guaranteed turns from Dragonite if you miss the range. On the whole though, I was a bit surprised by these results. Not the performance I expected!
I'm honestly surprised you messed up like that, Scott; I think you've gotten very good at these games at this point. I don't really mind, because it adds a different flavor to the video and I mostly watch for the commentary, it's just surprising. Great video regardless!
Ah my favorite line of fliers in gen 1 and honestly dodrio rocks in gen 2 as well. No answers for rock type weakness other than mimic though. Frail little bird in its first form, but drill peck ought to hit like a truck.
I'm looking forward to the Golduck and/or Seaking run. It was thought that Poliwrath's fighting type held it back, and those other two are very similar stats and move wise so it'll be a good test to see how those mid water types stack up. Though neither get an early water move, so perhaps Seadra would be more 1:1. E: to say that this tier list is much nicer. Great stuff!
This is gonna be a badass video. With not being able to evolve into the ultimate dodrio, it's gonna be a little tricky, though. This is a pokemon that doesn't get enough love though, so I'll be happy if it makes it into the C tier
I like how there is more discussion about the metrics. I have wondered them as well but not questioning the approach. I feel a reset and blackout should be separate metrics, since blackout can be considered as intended mechanic, and the final result/standing should be counted how close the real time (divided by the speed up) was to the game time. Resets would act as a tiebreaker, probably would need to be included in the final result formula in some way. Blackouts should not be double-punishing. Never would have I thought back in my youth while trying to push the truck that in 20 years I would still be around the game, thinking new angles to approach it. Your integrity and openness help me to dig deeper.
These are interesting ideas. I’ll think about them more! I never thought 20 years ago that I’d still not be a Pokémon master. But apparently, I’ve still got a lot of work to do!
Im looking forward to dodrios performance. Its my favorite non legendary gen 1 flyer. Has great speed and attack with decent bulk. And a solid move pool. Not the best but quite solid.
Great video man ,love seeing ur new videos on up ,been trying to keep up and watch all ur videos ,I have also been watching how ur doing it to help with my own pokemon mod hacks for my own channel ,still learning but watching ur videos it helping with my own editing. Keep up the good work
It's ME. I'M the Doduo lover! Which is actually kind of ironic because despite the fact I really like Doduo and Dodrio, I never used them in Pokemon Red or Yellow. I always had Pidgeot or Fearow or Farfetch'd by that point and never felt the need to raise up the kind of underleveled Doduo you can catch (Kanto's wild level curve is also really bad huh). I also really fondly remember the race episode of the anime because I had it on VHS. This is also the episode where Ash eats a Magikarp shaped taiyaki, which I also always really wanted as a kid. Not that I knew what it was, but like, it looked really good. Will admit seeing Doduo's eventual time I feel a little worried about Dodrio's time. Dodrio was one of those Pokemon I figured would end up doing really well because I mean, its stats are really kind of incredible. 115 Attack is pretty absurd for Generation I. But now uh...I'm kind of worried it will end up stalling and crashing like Doduo. We'll see though. Also they give Dodrio a lot of love to its movepool in later games, like in Gen 7 it gets Swords Dance, Jump Kick, and Stomping Tantrum which are all kind of crazy for it.
In another video there was talk of such a run, however the type would randomise after each major battle such as gym and rival battles. Also he wouldn't be able to check the new type and would instead have to figure out.
@@jotarokujo3603 This would make more sense and probably be more fun to watch, Im sure we would all enjoy watching Scott get stuck fighting brock with an electric/normal Venomoth!
I do feel that as chaotic as changing types every battle is, if you have an unfavorable typing you can always battle a wild Pokémon to change typings until you get a good defensive or offensive typing. I don’t know if that is good because there are no softlocks or grindspots based off of type alone, but it could also lead to type farming.
You really had me there when you said that there were only 4 Elite and a champion left. First Elite your rival. The constant diss on Bruno is hilarious
I think there were quite a few places where Double Edge would have given you a narrow one/two hit that Body Slam didn't. You already went to the Rocket Hideout and basically had a spare moveslot so I think it would be a good idea. Maybe I'm underestimating the recoil though.
The recoil is really awful which is usually why I avoid that move. It’s really only useful if you can use it to ko 1 particularly tricky Pokémon like the champions Alakazam for example.
I like the rule revisions as far as I can recall they don't deviate in anyway that affect time comparisons with previous pokemons runs, glad to hear corrections though( just an excuse to rewatch old playthroughs).
Duduo flying must be like some old Looney Tunes cartoon where Bugs Bunny probably uses his ears to as helicopter blades. Also caught myself a Nice shiny Maschiff
RE: do-duo helicopter heads for flying: ACK-Tually, in the original Japanese only pokedex guide book it says that the bird still has wings, but the species is slowely losing them. (true, but still ;) because of joke smark) But seriously, I can't unsee helicopter heads now -- so it's my new canon!
Happy New Year! I know Dodrio is one of the better Normal/Flying types in RBY, both in competitive and in-game, but don’t know how Doduo compares. I’m predicting that it will be a Glass cannon that enjoys having good STAB moves, but gets walled by any Rock types it meets.
Pretty much the story of any Normal/Flying type in Gen 1. Whether it learns Drill Peck or not pretty much determines its viability so if it doesn't get Drill Peck, it's pretty much always trash by default since other Flying STAB options are weak and Fly and Sky Attack are 2 turn moves with Sky Attack not making you invulnerable for a turn.
Been binge watching your videos, ever since I was recommended one, so I thought I would come in and say hello. Watching some of the older ones it's fun to see how much better you've gotten at the game as you have gone along. Also...Quagsire Crystal playthrough planned? I don't really have a favorite Pokemon really, but I do remember loving it because of it's goofy design. Base 35 speed but great typing and move pool I wonder how it will do.
Thanks for stopping by and saying hello! I should do Quagsire soon. I love it’s design and the typing always messed me up as a kid. Blue Pokémon, use electric move, no good…
Fun Fact: Sky Attack (Known as God Bird in Japanese) is a reference to the super moves of various Super Robots such as Raideen and Trider. The more you know!
Awesome run as always 😁 i have to correct you a little though, you arent invirnerable while in the air with fly, you can still get hit by bide and swift in gen 1. In later generations you get hit by sky uppercut, twister and thunder 👍
I’ve always thought Lorelei was definitely the hardest member of the E4 in Gen 1! She doesn’t have any repeats, all of her Pokémon are fully evolved, Ice is fantastic in Gen 1, & she doesn’t have 2 Onix. Especially in Yellow when her move sets are significantly better.
Agreed. I think for solo challenges the champion is usually slightly harder, but his strength comes from the fact you can’t switch out. Lorelei is certainly the strongest if you can.
I enjoy that Lorelei is the gate to ensure you are ready for the Elite 4. If you can’t get past bulky Pokémon with good defensive and offensive typing, you’re not getting anywhere. Maybe past Bruno, but that’s it.
Another banger video! But here's another reminder about a gen 2 starter comparison video!! How could you not want to play with the objectively cutest starter, Cyndaquil!
Two heads are better then one, but in the case of Doudo that didn't do the trick for it. But for a first stage evolution that was an okay run, except for that burtal Lorelei fight. 🤔 The trouble with flying types pre gen 4,is that flying types doesn't have a lot going on with special defence, or even physical defence. And most of them don't have enough moves for stab or a lot of coverage. So I think that you've done a great job with it. We could all get stubborn when it comes to winning, so I can totally get that, because I do that in all of my runs, because that makes the run somewhat fun for me. 😊 By the way the art for the rocket was really on point. 😉Keep up the good work.
That first playthrough reminded me of the time i did this challenge with Spearow, and all i can say is that it is Dodrio but 10x worse, with less moves, no body slam, and also an even lower special stat (and lower stats in general but special hurts it the most). I did manage to finish the game with Spearow but i had to do a lot of shenanigans to beat it, like using mimic to learn clamp from Lorelei's Cloyster and pray that i hit all of them just to guarantee i didn't get oneshot by either Cloyster or Lapras. If you ever do a solo run with Spearow in the future, i hope you have spare sanity to lose, because i can confirm you, Lorelei will be a nightmare.
@@shadowtitanx3962 Fire’s honestly not that bad. Neutral damage against stuff like Cloyster, and decent special stats are great for mimicking Slowbro’s Amnesia, especially when it’s not going to use that move.
Great job! Loved that you channeled that inner (w)rapping lass on the first playthrough! Looking forward to the artwork you commissioned for the trainers. Regarding the channeler, I still loved what someone else suggested for her name some time back; "Mandy" as in "Mandatory," while also somewhat being a shout out to Mandy from Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (both are rather creepy). ...I still may call her Mandy the status witch though. ;)
When I played Pokemon Yellow as a kid, I pretty much only used Pikachu and some water type. I remember getting so frustrated at Giovanni and so I pulled a low level Spearow out form the box just to watch it get destroyed by Giovanni because I was so mad. It beat his Dugtrio because Dugtrio can't hit it. Fearow later helped 4 or 5 year old me beat the League and become champion lol.
17:40 Wondering if Body Slam + Drill Peck would be enough to KO, since Body Slam has a higher chance at paralysis than the chance to crit and one-shot with Drill Peck.
I was always surprised at how high doduos offensive stats were as a basic Pokemon. I remember using it in my no evolution FireRed playthrough and it was definitely a standout alongside Clefairy, Staryu, Mankey, and Abra
9:10 Or rather, multi-hit moves deal exactly the same amount of damage as the very first hit, without paying attention whether it was a critical or not. So if the first hit was a critical hit, the others will also be "critical".
The [Doe] do it pun at the beginning made my night. Hope you get married to that fiancé soon, Scott. You already got the Dad jokes on hand. Fantastic stuff as always.
Regarding modding out the evolution sequence, I might argue, most of your runs treat these 'mon as single-stage, so modding this out brings parity with actual single-stage 'mon. But, as you said, that brings in further disparity with natural runs (though that's always gonna be the case considering Surge's trash cans).
Check out vennonoth's first tcg card. It literally changes type so its a nice coincidence. Oh and the only shiny I've gotten in scarlet is a chansey, take it from me just keep it a chansey if you ever get one.

Thanks for the content as always, I always get a kick out of Venomoths many types. As for Doduo learning fly, in the Anime Falkner during his battle with Ash, said that since Dodrio can jump really well it may as well be flying, so I've always associated that with Doduo as well.
The mental image of jumping from indigo plateau to lavender tower amuses me.
I'm pretty surprised too! At least now I won't do it with Spearow and Pidgey when those two come up!
Ah my favorite line of fliers in gen 1 and honestly dodrio rocks in gen 2 as well. No answers for rock type weakness other than mimic though. Frail little bird in its first form, but drill peck ought to hit like a truck.
Glad to see Oak's return! Always a great cherry on the cake, so to speak.
11:00 Everything about that twitter info is perfect: The blue pidgey, the name, the theme, I love it.
I'm glad you love it :D
This is gonna be a badass video. With not being able to evolve into the ultimate dodrio, it's gonna be a little tricky, though. This is a pokemon that doesn't get enough love though, so I'll be happy if it makes it into the C tier
That HP stat hurts
It really does… this thing is such a glass cannon. Or is it canon? I’m a musician and those two get mixed up.
@Scott's Thoughts Just spell it "cannnon" so that way you KNOW you're wrong and don't need to worry!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Hopefully there would be another 20 years of replaying these games yet another new way!
Im looking forward to dodrios performance. Its my favorite non legendary gen 1 flyer. Has great speed and attack with decent bulk. And a solid move pool. Not the best but quite solid.
I’m looking forward to it too!
Great video man ,love seeing ur new videos on up ,been trying to keep up and watch all ur videos ,I have also been watching how ur doing it to help with my own pokemon mod hacks for my own channel ,still learning but watching ur videos it helping with my own editing. Keep up the good work
Thanks so much! Glad you’re enjoying.
"Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead" -Benjamin Franklin
Just realized Venomoth was the first bug/dragon Pokemon ever made, and then I realized why they never did any other
Huh that’s funny I thought Venomoth was Dark/Ghost
Doduo's Pokemon Yellow dex entry-
"Its short *wings* make flying difficult. Instead, this POKéMON runs at high speed on developed legs."
I would enjoy seeing you do a randomizer solo challenge with venomoth where it's type changes every battle!
"So let's see if Doduo can Dodu it" top tier narration 2023
The (w)rapping lass is by far my favorite character art on this channel.
Oh Doduo! Doduo and Dodrio are my favorite Gen 1 birds! Hope it does well
You really had me there when you said that there were only 4 Elite and a champion left.
Love the new tier list! Great video to start 2023. Looking forward to more :)
I like the rule revisions as far as I can recall they don't deviate in anyway that affect time comparisons with previous pokemons runs, glad to hear corrections though( just an excuse to rewatch old playthroughs).
They just prevent me from making a few Double-Team riddled playthroughs which wouldn't be very interesting. (Realized this while filming Chansey.)
Doduo being fed all that protein. "GAINS!!! GAINS!!!!!!!! GAIIIIIINNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
So many gains it gained a second head
I believe in Doduo, just like how I believe Gamefreak will one day give us a pre-evolved baby version with only one head.
You know you want a Dosolo.
I want that so badly
Duduo flying must be like some old Looney Tunes cartoon where Bugs Bunny probably uses his ears to as helicopter blades.
Also caught myself a Nice shiny Maschiff
RE: do-duo helicopter heads for flying: ACK-Tually, in the original Japanese only pokedex guide book it says that the bird still has wings, but the species is slowely losing them. (true, but still ;) because of joke smark) But seriously, I can't unsee helicopter heads now -- so it's my new canon!
Glad you’ve rearranged the tier list, I agree it was way too top heavy :)
That Rocket's Golbat has both Supersonic _and_ Confused Ray? Guy's spec'ing hard.
the doduo line was always my Favorit Fly "friend" line just becourse they dont have wings witch i've always found hilarious...
I freaking love Duduo. It's one of my favorite Pokémon!
Awesome run as always 😁 i have to correct you a little though, you arent invirnerable while in the air with fly, you can still get hit by bide and swift in gen 1. In later generations you get hit by sky uppercut, twister and thunder 👍
“Worst mistake yet” I can think of a wingless bat fighting ghosts that would vehemently disagree with that
I’ve always thought Lorelei was definitely the hardest member of the E4 in Gen 1!
Got them planned for the first half of 2023
36:21 it's not unthaw, it's thaw. Unthaw means to un-melt, or freeze. Just thought I'd comment it
Two heads are better then one, but in the case of Doudo that didn't do the trick for it. But for a first stage evolution that was an okay run, except for that burtal Lorelei fight. 🤔
The trouble with flying types pre gen 4,is that flying types doesn't have a lot going on with special defence, or even physical defence. And most of them don't have enough moves for stab or a lot of coverage. So I think that you've done a great job with it. We could all get stubborn when it comes to winning, so I can totally get that, because I do that in all of my runs, because that makes the run somewhat fun for me. 😊
By the way the art for the rocket was really on point. 😉Keep up the good work.
Thanks @bateltheassistant!
Not gonna lie! The title totally drew me in. We like to see you suffer! In the most loving way possible
I never thought I would be shown in one of your videos. I’m glad you liked my shiny venomoth (I’m CEO of comedy).
Lorelei is basically evil against any Fire, Rock, Ground, Dragon, and Flying type. Grass types do have a fighting chance unless if you are Vileplume.
@@shadowtitanx3962 Why Vileplume?
@@skeetermania3202 low speed probably
@@shadowtitanx3962 Fire’s honestly not that bad. Neutral damage against stuff like Cloyster, and decent special stats are great for mimicking Slowbro’s Amnesia, especially when it’s not going to use that move.
Great job! Loved that you channeled that inner (w)rapping lass on the first playthrough!
Looking forward to the artwork you commissioned for the trainers. Regarding the channeler, I still loved what someone else suggested for her name some time back; "Mandy" as in "Mandatory," while also somewhat being a shout out to Mandy from Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (both are rather creepy).
...I still may call her Mandy the status witch though. ;)
Those growls really helped against Bruno, the exploding Hiker. Just wonder what he's doing in some random cave instead of at the E4
I love that overlay. Nice work
Glad you like it!
17:40
Wondering if Body Slam + Drill Peck would be enough to KO, since Body Slam has a higher chance at paralysis than the chance to crit and one-shot with Drill Peck.
That cursed electric venomoth.. stay strong doduo!!!
wow! what a clean back sprite for doduo thats gotta be the cleanest thus for for gen 1
I was always surprised at how high doduos offensive stats were as a basic Pokemon. I remember using it in my no evolution FireRed playthrough and it was definitely a standout alongside Clefairy, Staryu, Mankey, and Abra
Yeah, it’s very surprising!

I was very proud of the one! (And yes, my dad humour is ready to go!)
