Come on people, Countdown was an Aussie teen show, the overenthusiastic girls singing along was going to happen to such a catchy song! I genuinely think Nick enjoyed the impromptu backing singers - it certainly made me smile!
@bhingolacson510 yes, that's what I thought. And also I'm not going to get into an argument with a stranger over something that happened 44 years ago 😉
"Cruel to be Kind" is Nick Lowe and Ian Gomm's iconic classic originally from their Brinsley Schwarz days. I'm totally digging the enthusiastic audience sing along as well as Nick's, 'Question Mark and the Mysterian' stage jacket. Rock On!
Dude! That is Rockpile! That's Terry Williams on drums and I think I can make out Dave Edmunds on guitar. I assume Billy Bremmer is on the other guitar. They're just lip syncing anyway.
@@stewajf - Yes, that's indeed Rockpile. There's another clip on the Austech channel (same show, same day) where they mime to 'Girls Talk', with Dave Edmunds on vocals. And the girls in the audience singing along is even better there! 😁
Talk about 'Nickmania'! Those Aussies were really into it. Btw, way were Bremner and Edmunds blurred out of focus? I had never seen that happen before with them.
Watch about 2:27 into the clip (start about 2:20 for the buildup). Nick acknowledges just how "over-the-top" (putting it mildly) that girl singing over him in the audience is. Hah!
Why are all these "live" videos IDENTICAL to the original recording? Including timbre which can't be reproduced live... rhetorical question... Was this ever actually performed by him LIVE??? Nevermind, I'll just go watch Kay Hanley and Letters to Cleo actually play this live rather than someone dance around and move their lips while the recording plays in the background like they're actually performing it...
A lot of TV shows in that era wouldn't let performers actually sing live on the show, and a lot of the performers hated it, which is why it's so obvious. My favorite example of that is Blondie. Debbie Harry doesn't try at all with the lip syncing and looks bored out of her mind every time they make her do it, and it doesn't resemble their actual live performances at all.
It does kind of make it unique. ;) It's really the production crew to blame for that happening. Not sure how well they could have edited it out in '79 -- but at least there needs to be rules to the audience prior to the show -- you can sing along at a mild level but please don't scream or you will be removed immediately. (I do chuckle a bit when Nick nods his head in frustration while smiling at about 2:27)
@@weatherman92 - Funny how different people are! To me, those girls screaming is the icing on the cake! 😄 It's even better in the 'Girls Talk' clip (same show, same day) with Dave Edmunds on lead vocals, on the Austech channel 😁
Why do people clap while someone is performing? It ruins it for some people who came to listen to the performer, but not to your “annoying clapping!”. I would understand if the performer asked.
This is a rare one for sure
The Ridler suit. Man of great taste. 👍🤩😊
Love the crowd singing along! I miss music having great fun energy like that.
Oh, the memories

Love this song. I wonder what it sounded like live (vs this recording playback).
I heard him play at the Opera House in about 2015 - great night 🇦🇺👍🏻

Wouldn't have thought this song was from the late 70's. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What a fantastic song 👍
This song is very soothing if you discover you’ve fallen into the trap set for you by a covert female narcissist. 😘💋👙
You can palpably see and feel Nick’s embarrassment at the recurring over-the-top vocal enthusiasm of that besotted girl on the choruses; fun-ny…
It was a whole bunch of girls! 😄
I’d be besotted too, lol
He is singing it, the way I think I sound. The girl is actually how I sound.
🇺🇸🇬🇧👍🏻THANKS NICK FOR THE MEMORIES!!👍🏻
A like for the jacket
..Nick wore the "Riddler" Batman suit for the Stiff U.K. tour that year🎸😎
@@marcop8418 - My Sons who love Batman both approve! 😄👍
Cover your ears darling...A Legend to be sure!!
That girl singing out off key is great. How he rolls his eyes, like I'm trapped, is funny.

I love the girl’s singing the chorus!
@OHOWUNEEDIT - What! They sound freaking annoying. Good thing it was lip-sync. I will be out of tune because of them.
I'd love to hear Rockpile play this classic live, but this is great. Certainly the audience mics were "live!"

@Coogan - Hence Edmunds isn't making much of an effort with his miming in the 'Girls Talk' clip from that show! 😁
@Coogan - Same! 😄
some great background singers...lol
This is a hoot!

Hope Batman didn't mistake him for The Riddler.
Title is inaccurate - they are mining, it’s not live.
That's not live.
The girls are singing more than him.
Funs don't need microphone - some trebble screams hear better, than Nick's voice.

There you go. A live version on David Letterman 1983.
@@bogan-slayer7469 - What? Where?! 😀
I hope the screeching girl is not in the band but she seems to be having a good time!

a mi también me gusta, me hace acordar a los viejos discos de Johnny Rivers en el Whisky a Gogo 😀con las chicas gritando atrás.
