I am the little boy at the end of this video. I was the ring bearer in the wedding. I was 10 years old and my step dad was Carlene’s manager. I spent a lot of tine with these people as a kid and watching this video really trips me out.
And a great song it is! Thank you, Sir, a great showpiece for (my opinion) one of the most underrated greatest talents still alive and performing today. If I had three wishes, it would be to meet, sit down and relax and converse (mainly listen) to Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, and Nick Lowe speak about their lives or whatever they wished for an hour or four. I'd also love to hear them perform live again - together or solo - preferably in a small venue - except I've never had the priceless fortune of hearing Mr. Lowe in person and being as I am in my 60's I probably won't get that chance. I'll always be thankful for "rediscovering" him and his music and the way it made me feel human again.
Nick and Carlene were married for about 11 years, watching their faces on that day it show two very happy people, but unfortunately not well suited for the long term. I wish they were still together. They do remain close friends. A great video!!
One of his best. And his teaming up with so many other great performers since then, always an enjoyable experience to watch. And most recently, his performances with Los Straitjackets, just brilliant.
Where were you on August 7, 1979?....Unknown to me on that date, I was about to make a life-changing career decision.....the result of which still affects me to this day.....almost 42 years later....and still listening to this cut....Go Nick!
Moving into the first home after my father graduated law school. Moved from home state Colorado to Virginia. Moved back three years later when parents divorced. Ironically, I saw this video on MTV in the early 80s, maybe ‘82. Really good, solid song!
They were married on my grandparents' 50th anniversary, which we celebrated just outside Boston. I first remember loving this song when I heard it on a station in the Reno, NV area in Oct. 2006.
Loved this, gave great background to the video which I'd alway's wondered about (for some reason I thought it was shot in Florida!). I'd always wondered about "Textones" being written on the drums - I thought it was some kind of Stiff Records thing. Great stuff :)
I really believe that this was amongst the prettiest of pop-rock melodies and arrangements since The Beatles (ignoring less successful bands like amazing Big Star) and all around great song (although the solo doesn’t do the song justice in all honesty).., If I happen to hear this in a store or some random place it always makes me entire week. 😃
This song reminds me of revising for my O levels in 1978 (I did badly) .. interesting to see the explanations for this video, which seemed quite glamorous at the time, especially for a Stiff Records act. The Stiff tours of 78 and 79 were something else.
Nick Lowe and the Rockpile were great and still entertaining. I still have working tapes from 1979. Later Dave Edmunds left the band to create his own solo career.
The video does not match the lyrics...very great song and it matches what is guys go through in relationships...just wish it gave out the real point in the video.
Without wishing to split hairs, Terry Edwards started with Dire Straits before the "Brothers In Arms" tour - he played on the "Love Over Gold" tour. Thanks for the other info., though - always wondered if this was shot at their real wedding!
Love the song and I love the meaning of the song. It is impossible to completely agree with your partner. And arguments exist for a reason because we are all different and have different ideas and opinions. But after strongly voicing your opinion on a certain matter and observing the look of Sadness and Bewilderment on your partner. It is definitely better to be kind if you truly love your partner. And I definitely love my wife.
The band Clover (mentioned in the bubbles) included John McFee (Doobies-after Skunk was egoed out by Michael McDonald who was in Steely Dan w/J Baxter & was recruited by Skunk Baxter for the Doobies who then got an 'E-GOes or I go!'.That isn't gratitude. Also Huey Lewis was in Clover. The bubble re Textones' Drum head & band had Carla Olson who'd done a lot w/Stones' Mick Taylor: 'Too Hot For Snakes' on Razor & Tie (US) & w/Bird Gene Clark also.Ttones also had Dave Provost from Dream Syndicate 'til the end of '84s Tour for 'Medicine Show'-DS's best lp after which DS lost Provost & Ld Gtr Karl Precoda (who did 3 great Psyche-Rock CDs as 'Last Days Of May') w/#2+#3 on Squealer label.
That don't coincide...... After this song first hit the airwaves, one day I was in a super large department store with an open plan and low shelving. Someone was persistently trying to pick me up. No way I was going to be picked up! Then upon leaving the parking lot with the car windows down to enjoy the fine summer breeze Cruel To Be Kind came on the radio. It just happened to coincide I passed that individual walking by as the chorus Cruel To Be Kind blasted out of the speakers. Smiling to myself I sped away! You say your love is bonified but that don't coincide.....
*George Schubert* __None of your fucking business Shoe Bert.......unless you think like the Chinese communist polit bureau and we all should have the same taste in bloody music ? Especially this tralala bullcrap......from the once Jesus of Cool who began to think he realy *was* a failed reincarnation of Bietel Macca.....
I'm reading Nick Lowe's autobiography This is a quote from the book The story handed down was that they were originally the Drain family and a Scottish doctor by the name of Lowe had adopted and nurtured an earlier generation. Although the adoptees became ‘Lowes’, the doctor insisted that future generations retain ‘Drain’ in their name.

Now that’s a real trivia tidbit. I’m struck by how quaint it appears almost 50 years later. 🥂
Such a fun song and video! Thanks for sharing your story!
To cool, l bet you have stories. When Boston visited St.Pete in1979 we played Basketball with. Got into concert next night free
I really picked up on the two little kids clapping. But I think at 2:00 he was taking a quick hit of coke, saying "OMG what have I done"!
I am 67 years old. And this is gold finding this. Oh the memories. Proper emotion in the music.
What a great song, who could possibly have helped him co-write this amazing ditty?
+Ian Gomm Why it was you sir! I admit I had to look that up. "Brinsly Schwarz" I can never remember the name of that band!
+Ian Gomm omgomgomgomg!!

...I see what you did there.
😹oh, ian ~ you silly❕ i fell in love with this song the 1st time i heard it, & i'll never tire of it for all eternity❕ 💟
Nick and Carlene were married for about 11 years, watching their faces on that day it show two very happy people, but unfortunately not well suited for the long term. I wish they were still together. They do remain close friends. A great video!!
11 years is like 3 marriages these days.
What gem of a song I was 14 when this song came out it brings to mind a world long gone
A very happy and lovely song this is. I well remember this tune from years ago. Wish I could go back to those times.
One of his best. And his teaming up with so many other great performers since then, always an enjoyable experience to watch. And most recently, his performances with Los Straitjackets, just brilliant.
I'm telling you folks, 1978's Jesus of Cool, Nick's debut is a new wave work of art.
I think this is my all time favorite song.
Where have all the great songs gone...long time passing?
You've certainly got that right!
The musical industrial complex murders them.
The same place all the flowers have gone... ;-)
Where were you on August 7, 1979?....Unknown to me on that date, I was about to make a life-changing career decision.....the result of which still affects me to this day.....almost 42 years later....and still listening to this cut....Go Nick!
My first job working in a bank, hated it, retired as a nurse.
Moving into the first home after my father graduated law school. Moved from home state Colorado to Virginia. Moved back three years later when parents divorced. Ironically, I saw this video on MTV in the early 80s, maybe ‘82. Really good, solid song!
My son (6) and I sing this all the time. It’s a song for the ages and all ages. Thank you.
Cool! My mom and I used to songs in Spanish during Thanksgiving and Christmas! I will never forget those days!
One of my favorite songs! It’s still fresh!
Awesome video, the pop-up facts were just great!
I love playing this song on my guitar! It brings my spirits up!
..Same here..learned it way back in 80-81..Love it!! Sounds very retro-60's.
Love it! Did not know any of the trivia! Can't believe I never recognized Dave Edmunds in video
STILL one of my all time faves👍❤ Keep on keeping on Nick😎
This is one of the songs that changed my life. Thanks Nick.
Gem of a song and interesting piece of rock history :) Love it.
LOVE this song since 1979 -have his LPs Jesus of Cool and Labor of lust
This is truly wonderful
Interesting story about the making of this video. Still a catchy song remember when it came out in the late 70s. Great decade for music.
They were married on my grandparents' 50th anniversary, which we celebrated just outside Boston. I first remember loving this song when I heard it on a station in the Reno, NV area in Oct. 2006.
That's just sweet!

they made my all time fav album seconds of pleasure every song is great thank you guys for making it
Great song and thanks for the info, awesome.

Nick Lowe and the Rockpile were great and still entertaining. I still have working tapes from 1979. Later Dave Edmunds left the band to create his own solo career.
Dave Edmunds already had a solo career.
great song.
Fantastic!!!
Where have all the years gone?
Love the echo added to this version. good job
Nick Lowe is touring the U.S. this September and October! The Old Magic is back!
late 70's new wave and pop/rock
It's always struck me interesting that Nick's two best-known videos are wedding themed.
The video does not match the lyrics...very great song and it matches what is guys go through in relationships...just wish it gave out the real point in the video.
The Textones band (drum kit) was started by future Go Gos bassist Kathy Valentine
my god ~ the tropicana - been there done that... brilliant nick lowe + dave edmunds!
thx for ur posting!
Love that Old Mercedes.
Without wishing to split hairs, Terry Edwards started with Dire Straits before the "Brothers In Arms" tour - he played on the "Love Over Gold" tour. Thanks for the other info., though - always wondered if this was shot at their real wedding!
Do you mean Terry Williams?
Absolutely right, Dean - sorry. Terry Edwards who was in an indie band called The Higsons (he went to my school, and it's easy confusing for me).
A very cool song. He actually sounds a lot like and has a British accent like Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits.
It's quite amazing how many English proverbs find thereway into popular song titles or included in the lyrics.
Party of One is a fantastic album by Nick as well

Oh, and that young woman in white slouching on the chair at 1:24 and again at 1:33 - that's Carlene's older stepsister, Rosanne Cash.
THOUGHT there was an EVER-so-brief appearance of JOHNNY in one frame - not sure.....
@@ogam5 Not sure, although Nick and Johnny stayed fairly close up until Johnny's death, long after the marriage dissolved.
Wild!
This has kinda more echo! Love the pop ups! And So it Goes!
The unidentified women in the end, the black lady is an actress which she starred in the 80's TV show "Night Court". I cant recall her name.
Paula Kelly.
Cool
Great song. And, I also got married on 8/18/1979.
I got married on 6/23/1979
They can tour together.... Nick, Terry, Billy and Dave!!! For a Rockpile new album and DVD... ?;¬)
I've heard Terry Williams is reluctant to jump behind the drums anymore, preferring to run his club instead,
I sing this song when I do Karaoke. Not as good as Nick but I love it.
Respect to all the rockpile musicians.
WOW, I did not know that he married Carlene Carter. She's from Grand Ole Opry country music family royalty.
Surely Carlene Carter's Hollywood Hills house in this video later became (still is??) Morrissey's house. It looks so similar!
Anybody know???
The band Clover (mentioned in the bubbles) included John McFee (Doobies-after Skunk was egoed out by Michael McDonald who was in Steely Dan w/J Baxter & was recruited by Skunk Baxter for the Doobies who then got an 'E-GOes or I go!'.That isn't gratitude. Also Huey Lewis was in Clover.

Billy Bruemer as the chef…LMAO!
Fun stuff! But captions went by so fast!
Great hair
No mention of Rosanne Cash in the white suit?
I used to think it was COOL to be kind. It's cool to be kind people :)
That is a MUCH nicer anthem! Thank you - I'll mentally change cruel to cool now when I listen to this song 🙂
I did wonder why the drums had that name on, now I know. :)
The older woman unidentified in this video was probably the wife of the older guy they hired off the street to be the priest.
1:23 Dave Edmunds on the left...
That don't coincide......
After this song first hit the airwaves, one day I was in a super large department store with an open plan and low shelving. Someone was persistently trying to pick me up. No way I was going to be picked up!

You say your love is bonified but that don't coincide.....
Uhh... so what happens at 3:24? They go on a honey-moon and it was X-rated and couldn't be shown?
I didn't see any members of the Carter or Cash families.
At 1:26, you see a seated woman in a white dress suit. Apparently, that is Roseanne Cash.
Who are the 2 a-holes that don't like this song???
Right, that's it for them then!
George Schubert Johnny Cash and June Carter?

I think this beats any Peter Gabriel vid; just, saying.
Nick kind of reminds me of Kurt Cobain here. One part boyish charm, another part, let the air out of his friends tire and laugh about it later ;)
Maybe they will both end up painting a ceiling some day.
Pretty bride.
Great to see, but you don’t give us enough time to read some of the captions. I had to keep pausing it, which fucks with the flow.
Where’s Johnny and June…
They took the Orange Blossom Special 🚂 and went to Jackson 🤘
No Johnny and June? Maybe they just came to the reception.
I wonder if Dave ever gave the bill back to Nick. ;)
DeanMk1 Who do you think loaned him it in the first place?
@@mr.sensitive9963 LOL!
Most money Dave ever made.
I always look for Johnny and June Cash..........
kind of sad that Nick and Carlene broke up.
He married one. Pay attention. It will make life easier. Peace
Why wasn't Carlene given away by her real father, Carl Smith? And where is June Carter Cash and the rest of the family?
"Drain"??
I'm reading Nick Lowe's autobiography
This is a quote from the book
The story handed down was that they were originally the Drain family and a Scottish doctor by the name of Lowe had adopted and nurtured an earlier generation. Although the adoptees became ‘Lowes’, the doctor insisted that future generations retain ‘Drain’ in their name.
Let's Dedicate Wacky Jackie Sadam Jr. has died today unknown his ,mother will pay for all cost since she divorced my son.
Hmmm Declan McManus Maybe ?? 😀😀😀
Who wears a brown suit and particularly for a wedding!!!
It was the seventies.
@@charlescharlie_charles he looks younger than 70
Alas, Nick and Carlene broke up in 1999. Moes the pity
How could he be late to marry Carlene?
Nick has enough hair for 5 men.
How the hell are you supposed to read what it's saying? It goes way to fast for my mentally challenged brain...
Big 1 hit wonder?
