Looking at the reviews and I'm not quite sure what everyone's beef is. I'm just learning how to take of my car while limiting my need to go to the auto shop and I found this video quite helpful for a newbie, such as myself.
When you're doing one of these newer model focus you have to make sure that the circular right side is in all the way. Double check that it's seated all the way down in because it can give you a check engine light if otherwise.
Exactly! I’ve always changed my air filters and this one has been a real bitch getting that right side seated properly! I’m STILL working on it! I was hoping this vid would have a helpful hint in that area.
I have some quick thoughts. One, this is for the 3rd generation (2012-2018) Ford Focus. The previous generation Foci had flat air filters, whereas the air filter for the 2012-2018 Foci is cylindrical. Two, you can use an 8mm nut driver to remove and install the air filter; that's what I use on my Focus. It's very easy, and it helps you easily access all the screws. Three, if using the OEM engine air filter (Motorcraft part # FA-1908), there's a tab on the closed end; this tab fits in a matching notch in the bottom of the airbox to help guide the filter in to place. Four, on the closed end of the air filter, there's a flange; this flange fits in to a corresponding groove in the airbox. It's important to make sure that this flange is inserted in the groove. Otherwise, the filter intake will not seal; neither will the airbox be secured. Five, the screws will remain in their mounts in the upper half of the airbox cover; while you can back them out all the way, they'll stay put if you leave them alone. That means no lost screws. Finally, when mounting the top half of the airbox cover, turn the nut driver backwards (i.e loosening the screws to remove the cover) until you feel a click. This will let you know that the screws are in their thread, so you won't strip them out. Since the airbox is made of plastic, it's very easy to strip the threads; by backing out the screws first, you'll avoid this.
Good video, pretty much covers what you need to know. A couple of points. There were some mentions below regarding keeping a magnet handy for dropped screws. Actually, the air filter cover holds the screws captive (although you can back them out all the way if for some reason you want). They will stay attached to the cover during removal if desired. This is good to know since dropped screws in an engine compartment can be a real PIA. Also, when reinserting screws into threaded plastic holes, I have found it a good practice to turn the screw backwards a couple of turns, while gently pressing down, to feel the "click" that lets you know you are putting them back into the threads instead of cutting new ones. This will help prevent stripping out the holes. Just a thought.
Conceptually, a simple operation. In practice, though, it's a trial. Be careful removing the screws (8 mm socket, by the way) so they don't drop down into the engine bay. The top of the air box is a tight fit and needs a bit of wrenching. Then, the filter itself must be jerked and twisted and pulled to free it from the air box fitting. The replacement Motorcraft filter (at least) has a tab that fits into a slot at the bottom of the air box. It takes quite a bit of shoving to get the filter into position, and the flanges on the end fit into slots on the edge of the air box. And the edges of the air box lid itself fit into slots in the bottom of the air box - those have to be lined up exactly for the lid to fit snug. Then you can replace the screws. I've done this a couple of times now, and it's still a trial. But don't give up!
Way too simplied video my man! I’ve worked on my own cars , over 20 cars in my life time and the 2014 Focus is by far the most difficult air filter to install when using the correct Motorcraft air filter. This leads me to believe the Fram filter is not nearly sealing as well as a factory one!
Easy. My first job was oil changes, lube jobs and air filter replacement. Course, that was 30 years ago but not much has changed except things are a little harder to get to and more secure. Nice to do these simple things by yourself
I just got rid of my Focus of this generation. I changed the air filter in it myself last year, but it was very difficult to get it in. I used the Motorcraft brand air filter. Also, because it was a tight fit, it was difficult getting the top of the airbox back on. Why did Ford have to over-engineer something that should have been easier to do? I've never had problems with cars that had rectangular air filters.
Henry Rieke, Except for the first sentence (I LOVE my 2014 with the manual transmission), this is exactly the comment I would have written had you not beat me to it. Though I love driving it and oil changes are much easier to do than on my Acura (sideways oil filter high up on back side of engine too close to firewall -- messy), getting the new air filter back into the Focus is way more difficult than in any of the many other cars I have owned. Cursing Ford design engineers right now and searching for some clever trick that I have just overlooked so far, but with no luck. GRRRRRR.
@@ArcoZakus , I too, have a 2014 Focus with manual transmission. It gets 43 mpg, which is great considering I drive 550 miles a week! I concur: Changing the air filter is more difficult than the video let on.
Bolts to undo the air filter cover? On my 2008 Corolla and my sister's 2007 Sonata, there are nice easy-to-undo spring clips that you simply pull away and then the air cover opens up. If you are doing that filter change on a Focus, have a small magnet that is taped to the end of a long stick, because when you drop one of those screws in the engine bay you are going to need that magnet/stick to retrieve that dropped screw.
I broke my Air Filter Clips on the Air Filter box trying to force the Air Filter into the unit. Following day, I removed the cover again and used a Grease on the filter lip and on the intake flue. It went in like a glove. I used Easy Grease ‘Easy Grease Spray Lubricant Synthetic Oil Waterproof Rust Protection’ from Amazon but you can possible use any other which can withstand -20 to +120 degrees. PS mine was original Volvo Filter. Same recommendation applies for Ford and others.
I never change the air filter in my car. I just open the air box, turn on the water hose and just rinse the filter off for a few minutes with the car running.
+robert335ijb4 there shal be no degreaser anywhere near my car. i believe in old school push rod v8s. i like to run my big block with no oil just to hear the metal on metal contact to remind me how much of a torque monster it is
+subaruwrxfan does her car shudder upon acceleration from a stop? Honestly. I deal with these cars every day. The clutches in these are junk. If I were your mother in law I'd file for a lemon law.
+Armando Quezada i have almost this exact car too and the shuddering was really bad until i had my clutches replaced few weeks back (after being on back order for 6 weeks) and the car drives better now than it ever did before!

Those are all GREAT points!

I’m so glad you said this cause I was sitting in front of my car just now scratching my head cause the cover wouldn’t go back on 😂

What a crap design! Not sure if I got this in right.

I just get the K&N filters and i clean it up and re-oil it once in a long while
Or get an AEM, clean it up and never have to oil. Just grab the air hose blow it out and throw it back on the car.
Dooxi is a great K&N replacement- I used one and it looks like the K&N, may be!
@MMM Thanx for the great video! Just finished installing my new filter on a 2014 Focus.

NICE VIDEO How to Change the Air Filter on a 2014 Ford Focus
would you ever recommend buy the reusable air filters that you clean out and place back in. YEEEAY OR NAEE, and why.
yay
I never change the air filter in my car. I just open the air box, turn on the water hose and just rinse the filter off for a few minutes with the car running.
what a waste of water dude. just fill the air box with water and drive around so the water can move around and knock the dirt off
+415mac415 your definitely gonna want to stick that hose right in the throttle body to provide optimal cleaning of the engine
+UndeadExplorer damn youre right i forgot about that. few gallons in the gas tank too to clean out fuel pump and fuel lines
+415mac415 don't forget a good degreaser!
+robert335ijb4 there shal be no degreaser anywhere near my car. i believe in old school push rod v8s. i like to run my big block with no oil just to hear the metal on metal contact to remind me how much of a torque monster it is
very interesting I was wondering about these air filters. Hope you will test the "Dooxi" air filter.
That's a huge OEM filter!
Ya learn something new every day.
what size are the bolts please
The 4 bolts are 5/16"
The 2007 focus has a non changeable air filter if you mess with it the car will start bucking and not be able to go more than 20 mph
straight forward. Don't you mean straight FORDward?
Lol this is why we love Matt
zozzle
did u pay for the filter or did fram give it to you
They sponsored the video.
greetings from Honduras I love your videos
Great video tu
I just uploaded a Prius Air Filter Replacement video lol :D Funny, both at the same time :D Nice job buddy
I just got two in last week from dooxi.com !
oil type and after market filters that say increased power often mean less filtration and free engine damage! oil type filters are especially bad
Yeah this is a dry filter and looks nearly identical to the OEM filter.
Most OEM filters from Honda are oil type filters.
+Pilotbound no they aren't
"What's up, everybody? Soobada-x fan here" Chiiiill. Lol. Love your channel though.
Thank you for this video

Not a fan of FRAM products
The old air filter looks brand new.
the terminology killed me, it’s a ratchet not a wrench, those are bolts not screws
You've moved on to air filters now.
The world is screwed.
The old air filter was still clean. Changed for no reason.
Fram.. really?
what's wrong with fram. I have had no issues
I've heard nightmare stories about fram filters. Would never rely on their products to keep my engine healthy.
