What brand gauge set do you use to check and charge auto a/c? Watched your video. Bought a harbor freight set and after only a few uses the seal on the high side hose is leaking and I have to return it. Hand tight, so no it shouldn't be leaking. They don't make things like they used to. Thanks.

All focus ST's, and RS's will idle funny and dip and come back up either randomly or when cold after year or so. I'm on my second car . The intake valves get gummed up so fast you should have them cleaned once a year if you don't have Catch cans installed. Also stock pcv valves spray large amounts of oil after 5000rpm I guarantee if you pull the cold side charge and intake pipe off it will be coated in oil.

In the US they weren't popular only because the idiots who ran dealerships were tacking on a $10k over MSRP "locality fee". I owned a Focus ST and wanted a RS but most dealers wanted like $45k for one. I'm not paying corvette money for a focus even if i like hot hatches. It all came down to dealers not understanding the market for fast fords like the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, or Focus RS. They thought because they were "Sports Cars" they were a mid life crisis mobile for dads who drink Michelob Ultra. In reality this was a car for a 24-32 year old kid who got their first real job out of college.

I bought a 17 RS for around 70k miles for like 32k about 2 years ago, an okay deal for the time. I absolutely love it, smaller rims with wider tires made a pretty big difference in the ride and when I eventually snatched up a used suspension kit it rides pretty good now(given what it is, and still capable of at speed). It's such a blast on windy roads and quite honestly a little too fast sometimes, it can be hard to really push the car without driving recklessly, at least around blind corners. The only issue it's ever given me was a bad fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail which has a fair chance of being caused by bad gas at a local stop. I drive my friends around in it, put the seats down and haul furniture, my dogs, groceries, etc; even put a kayak on top last week with my roof rack. Come this winter it's going to haul me and my snowboard to the mountains multiple times this year. It's a great car, like any other it just needs to be maintained.

I didn't need to but chose to get new transmission because 3rd gear was being a absolute bear, electric pwr steering broke at about 230k $750 repair. I currently drive a 16 RS with 77k miles. These cars are notorious for faulty BCMs (I believe all focuses of this era had the same issue) so it’s not a surprise that there’s been several codes that consist of “lost communication with BCM.” I guarantee it’s not an issue with either door but the BCM acting up and losing communication with a random module. My focus ST’s BCM used to lose communication with my headlights all the time and it would cause the bulbs to not turn with the car which is a feature of these headlights. But a quick restart would fix it and they would turn again and the warning light would go away. You also mentioned the owner said the car would stall out at idle every once in awhile, these are know to have faulty a vapor purge valve/solenoid so I would guess that’s probably the issue, it might not throw a code now but that’s the most common symptom with that issue. Otherwise these cars are built very well and can last a long time so as long as the oil and other fluids are changed when they are recommended to be. Gotta get those valves cleaned every once in awhile too.

Had it pressure tested with no faults, but the dealer went ahead and replaced the head gasket. Minor issues with door weatherstripping and had the intake valves cleaned once. I did get 1” smaller rims with larger sidewall tires to help the daily driving. All in all, a solid car.

Burns maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart oil every 5000 miles(oil change,). Original clutch and turbo. I rarely jump on it except for the occasional on ramp acceleration up to freeway speed. First Ford product I have ever owned. Once engine gives me issues I will put in a stroked 2.3 liter or have the one I have rebuilt to a 2.3. Great car so far for me

Holy cow! I've owned my '14 ST for 8 years only gotten it up to 90k miles. My only issues were poor roads that kept busting up my suspension (4 repairs in it's lifetime), replaced the hood latch cause it was a pain to open sometimes and the coolant reservoir because it cracked. Thinking about replacing my clutch since it slips if give it the beans above 6kRPM, aside from that... it's fine (ABS fully off). Other than that, to my surprise, everything works. If I have any complaint it's Ford's use of the term "torque vectoring" when honestly it's "torque braking". 😅

Another reason for the AC not working well is that the radiator cooling fan might not be running. My 2013 Escape has the same electrical system. During the winter I did not realize my radiator cooling fan was not running, until June when the weather got hot. The 50 Amp. Mega Fuse #8, which sends power to the Radiator cooling fan, had burned out and it did not trigger a check engine light. There are 9 Mega fuses in a hidden fuse panel in front of the battery. Mega fuse # 9 powers the Body Control Module. These 50 Amp mega fuses are "Slow Blow" fuses that can get weak, letting through reduced amps causing trouble with the fan and Body Control Module items.

Had an opportunity to buy a Focus RS new back in 2017, and it was definitely a fun car. This car was clearly aimed at a niche demographic, and I wasn't it. If I was half my age, I would have thought a lot more seriously about it. I passed - for the same money, I bought a Mustang GT/CS convertible instead. You can't compare the two as they are completely different cars with completely different road manners. I wanted more of a cruiser than a race car, and something that had more comfy seats. Too bad the Focus RS wasn't around during the hot-hatch era in the 1980s - would have made my VW Rabbit look like a horse & buggy.

I added a Bullitt to the fleet in 2019 - minus the Recaro seats. 20-30 years ago, the Focus RS would have been perfect - it's great for someone who's single, or a small young family. A people mover that also delivers on performance.

      @Lambykin 10 місяців тому

@@GrummanBearcat North America wouldn't see the Escort until the third generation in the UK, and no performance-oriented options until about 1983. There was apparently an Escort SS in 1981 that was the performance version, but production numbers were very low and I've never laid eyes on one in my life. It basically featured suspension & brake upgrades, but the drivetrain was unchanged from the regular Escort. A turbo option was finally offered for 1984 for the Escort Turbo GT, and appears to have been dropped after 1985. Later Escort GTs would have the larger 1.9L engine that was naturally aspirated, and produced less power than the turbo-charged 1.6L version. Sadly, we would never see the Cosworth option on this continent. Important note about the Escort - our version is a "distant relative" of yours, which tells me there are few similarities.

We need more cars that combine turbochargers, manual transmissions, and all wheel drive. My only issue with the Focus RS is that I wish it was a 2/3-door. I’d prefer genuine sports cars like that to not be larger and heavier than they need to be.

That engine cover is not only for aesthetics... It also reduces the noise of the injection system, which is relatively noisy in these cars. Mercedes-Benz began installing covers in the 90s. That is why it has felt liner/insulation on the underside of the cover. I don't know about the RS reliability, but I purchased my 2018 ST3 with 16k miles, and now it is up to 55k, and I have not repaired anything. All I have done is maintenance. I wanted an RS until they started having cylinder head gasket problems.
By the way, the Focus was engineered by Ford, Volvo, and Mazda; Focus, C30, & the 3, respectively. But the platform was used for many additional models. The place of "birth" was Cologne, Germany.

Owned a 2016 RS. Was so much fun to drive and with a couple bolt ons. That thing ripped! Started a family and had to sell it. Just now got a super deal for a 2014 Focus ST

You got my hopes up, Scotty, for a new little sporty Ford in the lineage of the original Rabbit GTI. Or, for Ford, the Mondeo/Contour.

To buy one of these today you'd pay between $24,000 for a 2017 and $43,000 for a 2018 .. You'd have to be nuts to pay that kind of money for a used Ford Focus RS ..

This was my dream car ever since MKII came out. But in the end i got tuned Fiesta ST because it was half the price and i couldn´t afford a Focus RS. Very fun as well though.

i must be british because i just bought a 2015 3.5 gen ford focus se with the 5 speed manual with 91k miles. Very hard to find a manual non st or rs and I've loved it so far. It rides miles nicer than my 2000 5 speed mazda protege I had and better than my 03 ford focus zx3 5 speed I had. Im only 21 and i plan to have a manual forever even after teaching myself because its so much fun and its timeless to me just like cars are.

Hey Scotty, on a different subject. But still on the subject of Ford. Have you heard that Ford is recalling 870 THOUSAND Ford F - series truck's the because of the electric parking break's can activate on their own without the driver doing any kind of a input for them to set?

About the engine cover holding heat in. Wouldn’t that make it less stressful on the plastics and gaskets because they cool down slower? Just like a metal if you bend it too much or too fast it’ll break. I feel like the same would apply here. I mean BMW literally made this their whole thing to keep everything together better on the b58. And it’s proving to be a very reliable engine.

Focus RS's are nice cars, but I'm right now they're not much cheaper than Civics. On kbb an average 2017 Civic Type R goes for 27-31k while a 2017 RS goes for 25-27k. I've noticed that in my area all the RS's are listed higher than the kbb average, at 30-40k indicating that they might go up in price. To begin with, the Focus RS only sold 9,500 in America over the three years it was produced. While the Type R is still in production, estimated 13,000 sold in America between 2017 and 2019, throughout all the years around 30k to 40k Type Rs sold worldwide.

My brother had one for a short time , he’s not young but what the hell, then he grew up and bought a Porsche suv and then a older Porsche sports car the difference was mind blowing in quality and refinement. It’s a early 20’s car to brutal day to day and with 300 horsepower in a Ford 4cly…….boom
