Whether you’re totally new or just adding on to an existing system, you need overview of all your choices. (Take an in-depth course on grow methods: university.upstartfarmers.com...)
But first, let's review the basics of hydroponic design.
There are 3 basic parts to almost every hydroponic system: a sump tank (sometimes split into one sump tank and one mixing tank), a growing container, and a pump.
The Kratky method is one exception to this - it keeps the solution in the growing container with no pump and uses a measured amount of formulated solution.
There are 5 main types of systems that use and arrange these parts in different ways:
DWC - Deep water culture. DWC systems use a floating raft to hold plants over a solution tank. This is great for tropical regions because of the great temperature stability in the root zone but can have problems with dissolved oxygen levels.
NFT - Nutrient film technique. NFT systems use a series of shallow troughs and are very common method in greenhouses on a single horizontal plane. It’s cheap to build up front but not very space efficient.
ZipGrow™ - ZipGrow™ and other vertical tower systems use vertical planes to grow in 3-dimensional space rather than a single horizontal plane. These types of systems are more space efficient with lower operating costs, though upfront costs tend to be higher.
Aeroponic - Aeroponic systems grow plants primarily in air, using a fine mist to deliver solution to plant roots. Aeroponics are cool and can be cost effective, but are a nightmare to manage.
Media-based - Media based systems are any system that uses an aggregate or fiber media in a container. These could be media beds and Bato buckets are the two most common methods here. These are great techniques for large statured crops that need a lot of root support, but aren’t always space efficient.
The four main factors to choose a technique are:
Location
Facility
Crops
Management/labor

As usual, quality information for the community. Please keep it up. Great videos.
Thanks! And will do!
I wish you continued this videos, they are so helpful!
Beautifully explained, near to truth......love it, interesting!
Thank you Bright Agrotech, your videos are incredibly helpful and valuable. They are paving the way for people like me who are planning to start their own hydroponic greenhouse!
this really helped me figure out the hydroponic system I want.
You are one of the great resources on hydro. Harley Smith from NPK Industries is also very significant.
In love with hydroponics
Thank you for the great content!
Perfect video for an overview!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Good stuff! Thanks for putting these videos out there!
Happy to do it! Hope you'll subscribe for more helpful videos.
nice to see kratky mentioned, totally understand it not being a commercial option, but excellent for a new hobbyist
Totally- I actually think that it will eventually be a commercially accepted method. . .
Very good video, good overview, thanks
this is very helpful! thanks.
You're amazing, thank you. I'm a chemical engineer, and finally, someone who is solid on science and all the processses.
Glad we could help!
Biggest problem with hydroponics is all the misinformation by you tubers who treat hydroponics as rocket science,,it just isnt ,,hydro is by far easier than indoor dirt growing,,,that is if you understand how to grow anything
thank you for this video! it was very informative !
Very clear man. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this awesome video! I appreciate this so much! #Grateful
Keep these vids coming!
Will do Sally!
Hi, I love your chalk-n-talk. You seem very smart. I just wish I could see your marker better.
feel thankful to have you sharing info still I am confuse at some . Any chance to link you up for more indept how to start an urban farm?
buen video le escribo desde colombia gracias sigan asi si me puede responder una pregunta cuanta distacia hay en el metodo vertical entre los tubos
Wow I'm loving it thank you 😊
You're very welcome 😊
I really enjoyed thank you,i want start tropical plant like papaya by EBB-Flow in growing tend am I in right way?
Amazing!
Building my own system, great delivery, been subscribed
fantastic. All the best!
Cool videos!
Great content there, but what is the thing that you mentioned about the resource?
I'm checking out the link (upstart university) and but the other one is able.egg? (that is what is shown in the auto generated subtitles and I can't seems to find anything about it
I am thinking of NFT multi layer indoor setup with LEDs as light source...my location's average temp is around 30°C being 45 in Summers and 5-6 in winter...want to know if air conditioning system would be expensive all together??
Or should I go for plastic covered house..green house
As usual, great infor from dr Nate, but zI got one question, What was the second toll dr Nate suggested (other than upstart uni) to help doing the farm calculation ? I repeated the video multiple times but I couldn't catch it. Thank you
I see this new designs regarding shipping containers ... how about if I have a old barn can I use same design for this platform?
A important key word said in the video. “Educate yourself”.
I have some friends that are “YT engineers” who constantly fails on their projects due to watch a YT movie and off they go.
Misunderstanding me correctly pls, there is a lot of great content on YT, but I still never met someone that made a successful business based on YT vids.
Aqua/hydroponic is in basic very simple. However, to make it work consistently it requires knowledge. Many “secrets are left out for a reason.
Personally I think it’s a “shitty” way to inform that something is easy. Although I have to admit that no one will share knowledge for free.
What an inspiration!
Let me qualify - for those of us who have been entrenched in conventional agricultural practices, this is hugely refreshing, and enlightening.
Good to hear, Martin!
Thanks for the beautiful educative videos. Can’t we have multilayered NFT channels? How are efficient is it? Also, what’s your take on Indoor NFT with grow lights. Thanks so much!
Indoor for large scale, which technique can use?
Can't seem to access www.able.ag
Is it still available?
you mentioned "Able.egg". I can not find it could you please attach a link to this video
I am not able to get the link to work
Thank you so much for this. This really helps
Glad we could help David!
great vid thanks
what is the best system for outdoor ?
It depends on the crop! We have used towers and bato buckets/dutch buckets in the past, but many folks use NFT, DWC, all of the techniques outside depending on where they're located. We prefer ZipGrow towers for most of our applications, but we're very focussed on vertical production.
At last! somebody can explain this!
Why the aeroponic technique not effective on a commercial level?
I'm using smartpots and I rly love them. Also the taste of a grow in a
good soil mix. But I would like to use the benefits of hydroponics.
Could it be possible to use the benefits of soil and hydro together? I
already have tested it for a week, with massive overwatering my Soil in
the Smartpots and had also a massiv root growth outside the pots. They
looked rly healthy and I had a good growth of my plants, without any
overwatering damage, even my Soil was 24/7 moist and well watered . But I
dont know if its worth or a good idea to invest in a Hydro System for
Soil potting. The most people say its stupid and a waste of money, but
the roots looked so good, they ware so long and white and I think this
could be much better if the water was recycling. In my setting the water
stood in my container, with my Smartpots.
Sure, you can always set up a test system to give it a shot. Smart pots are just fine for hobby growing though. It's all about your goals - what are you hoping to achieve by going with hydro?
At least, not to fail. I dont have enough money to fail, but I also want to maximize yield on a small space, with a good taste. It's kinda risky and I see some problems. Like: what about the microorganism in the Soil, or the fungy that supports my plant? Even if it worked for a week (actualy very well) I dont know if this is a good Idea for a whole grow cicle, or even for a complet hydroponic dripping System.
Hey man, I'm a budding Hydroponics farmer - had a doubt. At 4:55 you mention that NFT is only good for a single plane growing system. Why would you say that exactly? I've seen multiple plane NFT systems but also wanted to understand what you were trying to refer to since you really look like you know your stuff and I don't want to miss a point here.
Stupid question but if your going to use a media in hydroponics why not just soil?
Soil retains too much water preventing the roots from getting the oxygen they need. Hydroponic grow mediums allow the proper oxygenation of the roots
Hi! I'm an engineer wanting to dive into this industry. I live in the tropics and I want to build a farm right smack in the urban area. Is it a good idea to use the ZipGrow method right off the bat? Planning to grow lettuce mainly and some herbs like basil and mint. Thank you!
Hi, we are a factory focus on grow light, if anything i can help, please feel free to contact me. 008615560285902

Please give me a reason why aeroponics not effective in commercial scale, thanks for the video
Hi Vahid, the main reason we don't recommend aeroponics is that maintenance gets pretty intensive. Root zone temperatures have to be kept very stable because there's not much thermal mass. The nozzles for the mist are very fine, which means that they can clog up easily. Between these two things there's just too much maintenance and risk for commercial growers. That said, aeroponic systems are really cool and great on a smaller scale. We've run them and had a lot of fun with them.
Hello, In a controlled environment, the root zone temperature is easier to be kept stable, regarding the high watering frequency, than in a media based system. The nozzles percolation is a false problem if you use professional nozzle, you just have to clean up your system with acid and H2O2 once a year (if you use low pressure nozzle you even reduce this problem). This techniques is widely used in a commercial scale for mini-potato tuber production in NL since years. And some company started to use it at commercial scale in vertical farming (AeroFarms, GrowTruck and others).
Yes, there are ways to deal with nozzle clogging, scale, etc. but it's not typically a technique that your average person wants to tackle for relatively low value food production. There are a number of folks using it as a production technique, but the jury is still out as most of them are brand new- for instance, AeroFarms has only produced one or two crops at commercial scale with their technique, and they're only a month or two into production. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying that it hasn't within this context.
I find aeroponic growing lower maintenance than any method that recirculates the nutrient. Root zone temperature, clogging and uneven mist coverage issues are easily addressed by selecting the correct type of nozzle for the task. In the right location, a commercial aeroponic system could be operated completely offgrid using only renewable energy.
I`ve run high pressure aero for years, indoors under lights and outdoors in full sun. While not commercial scale, most hobby growers dont use 16ft long, 56 cubic feet chambers. If you want massive commercial scale, its perfectly possibleto run 20,000 8`x 4` aeroponic chambers without temperature or power outage issues.

Forgot about Dutch Buckets?
thats media based
Able.egg.?..🤔🤔
searched for able.egg and it is nowhere to be found
I just realized this is a Zip grow ad, zipgrow is a brand under nft, i see what you're trying to pull.
He is providing free information about hydroponics. In that information, he expressed his preference. If he works with/for those systems, is it surprising he prefers it? I have no issues with his comment and did not find it to be a specific advertisement.

am i the only one having a problem seeing the board ?. its too bright
I'm going to write on a big whiteboard and talk for 10 minutes - but you won't be able to see really anything I am writing about.
К сожалению у нас это никому не нужно.
