Beautiful presentation. The explanation of "mobile", "immobile" nutrients and how this affects the progression of the deficiency is the key for diagnosis. Missing almost everywhere else.

I've seen alot of comments stating that images should have been added. Though that would have been a plus I understood everything. I believe this video was for persons who already have some basic understanding of how the deficiency looks and just wanted to match them to the specific nutrient.
Being a college student, I get overwhelmed with slideshow so the talking was refreshing to me. Creator, please ignore the negative comments.

    A note:
These deficiency symptoms can also be caused by root invading (root knot) nematodes that interfere with the uptake of all essential elements. This is one reason to change the plants you grow to a new place each season. Besides planting a nematode resistant crop, when you pull out an old plant, be sure to get as much root material as you can find if the plant was infested. Do not put those roots directly into compost.
One can reduce nematode populations in the soil by spreading the soil out to be exposed to the sun. I do this with the infested plants I pull out, too. I hang them on a south facing fence.
In places with bad infestations, it may be best to bring in new soil and restrict planting of susceptible plants to large pots. Continue planting non susceptible plants in the soil and over time the nematode population in that area will decline.

Part of the first step should be to check and adjust the PH of the water along with adding the nutrient if applicable. Certain nutrients lock out at different levels of PH. A well run hydroponic system's PH should fluctiate within the appropiate range so specific nutrients can be optimally absorbed. Just adding more of a specific nutrient can lock out other nutrients.

I kept expecting him to pick up some of those plants on the table for reference, but they were hardly utilized.

As you were explaining about heat, Florida is a Hot State. Plants are use to this weather. I use Nitro when my plants start losing their Lust of Green. Water is a must in Florida. It can keep your out door plants from drooping. Like you said: Too much Heat can take out Iron, Calcium. I don't over water. This also can cause loss of Growth Color. It starts to turn a darkish color of brown. I don't want this. There's age, can't help this matter!

Hi Ethan, this is by far the best video I have seen on diagnosing a plants health and how to fix it. I am growing lettuce in my basement using aquaponics and it looks like I have a slight calcium deficiency which would make sense since I have poor airflow in my basement with no fan. I am going to set a fan up to see if it clears up. The only thing that doesn't add up is that the dead spots on the tips of the leaves seem to only appear on the tips of the old growth and not the new growth, which as an immobile nutrient should be the other way around right? What are you thoughts?

In addition, a link to get that chart from the university would be nice and telling us what foods or natural sources offer nutrients other than just magnesium and iron. If it helps to know, some people have a sensitivity to higher voice pitches... You might consider using a mic that adds more base to your voice! That said, I really appreciate this video. This was a very thorough video on deficiencies and very good explanations of them, which is more than most do in their videos. But one thing I have yet to see anywhere is a 'completely' thorough and very specific "show-and-tell". Just like if it were a study done at a University or a science project. Where if you have a few examples of a control crop with no deficiencies, a very healthy plant. Then you have a couple of the same type of crops of each deficiency, that were purposely insufficient or withdrawn from the feeding schedule. (e.g. one crop purposely given insufficient amounts of Nitrogen, another insufficient amounts of Mag, etc.) This way you would have a few examples that were very specific and apparent. Also, where some of the examples would have multiple deficiencies that are common together do to lock-out, such as a pH lock-out or other. I feel that video would easily get millions of views and become the "go-to" for everyone who has questions in the subject. Just sayin :)

You should mention that nutrient deficiencies are not always a lack-of/over-abundance of said nutrient!
Usually the problem is improper ph, or over/under watering. Which will damage your roots, disabling their ability to absorb the proper nutrients you already have in your soil/grow-medium

As you explain and say all those big words. Maybe you could include a picture of such big word as it pertains to the plant by showing the picture of multiple plants with the big word and how many different ways the plant could receive the big word and different stages of development back to healthy plants.

Ok, so for weeks I've been having problems with my in ground produce garden (a melange of nutrient defficiencies), my potted plants on my backyard deck (in the second best area for full sun on my property, but not enough sun. I had to quarantine them due to what I think is spider mites that I cannot get rid of short of plant genocide. This is why they're in the lesser sun light area to begin with). I've been scouring the internet, watching gardening tip, vlogs, reading published university journals, and (like you mention in this video) have been chasing phantom trails only to find a dead end or a new trail along the way. I'm more of a science and practical application of cause and effect kind of person (with some what of an artistic flair) and have never had so many issues gardening (my parents raised us on their hip and a basket full of garden veg in the other, but I'm admittedly only truly exploring in further detail as of 3 summers now, the first two of which I had no problems other than the raccoons and deer eating my melons and beans last year.
Anyway, the point is that after about a month of gardening trials and tribulations, and reading the entire internet, I've arrived at this 24 min video that has given me clear straightforward, and valuable information that has answered just about every question I've had and gave a direct solution for each issue. My main concern is that the damage might be too much and the solutions too late. I also don't have any 'ponics systems, only dirt, both in ground and potted. I understand that a diffiiciency is the same no matter the growing medium, but I wonder how the application of the solution differs for native & potted soil plants. Also, spider mites. WTF?! I've tried all I know to and even the local nursery is stumped. I've tried gone down the list of solutions in vain.
    • 1 • Water Blast
Worked at first, but I could only do it so often without water logging the potted soil, and spider mites hatch basically every day.
    • 2 • Dawn Dish Soap + Clove + Lemon Oil +H²O
Again, the water played a factor as well as not wanting to burn the plants so I could only spray every 5 days. Worked at first and thinned out the herd until they came back in force.
    • 3 • Pure Neem Oil Extract + H²O
Same, water, also drove off the predators of the mites allowing them to repopulate unhindered while also slightly burning the plants but not enough to drop leaves. Just make them slightly translucent in random spots on leaves, ringed with chlorosis and in some cases crispy brown necrosis.
At this point I turned away from the internet and went to the best local nursery that is like family having been going there for all 32 years of my life. My homegirl aka The Green Goddess immediately pointed at Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew Liquid Concentrate.
    • 4 • Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew + H²O
Basically the exact same results as the Need oil with a few minor differences. It's been 13 days and they haven't fully repopulated like before. The webbing and total visual confirmations of mites has significantly reduced, comparatively anyway, but it really hurt my plants to the point that most only have a few leaves even though I followed the directions on the bottle to a T. I'm afraid to do it again.
& Last but not least, Captain Planet's fourth activation element. . . 🔥 😂🤣😂. Our powers combined. . may just be the answer, but so far I'm still seeing new webbing every night, but is seemingly becoming less. I just take a stick lighter (or BBQ lighter) and inspect every cage, pot, plant, & anything near and /or, in, on or around each plant with a flashlight in the middle of the night and burn every bit of webbing with a tiny beige dot hovering in space I can find. Yes, yes I know what all the TubeTrolls are just dying to type with their gnarled, hairy knuckled paws, "but what about the friendly helpful non pest spiders?! You're just going to destroy their homes?!" The only thing I can say is, you get a spider mite infestation on, under , around your back deck that is home to 50+ (FIFTY!!), 30yr or older tropical plants, 20 or so peppers, 4 ancestral heirloom tomatoes, and is less than a hundred yards away from your main produce garden (that hasn't been infected) in a place that is quite windy in spring. (spidermites are Uber efficient wind sailers btw.) Then we can have a discussion about not burning all the webbing when that happens to you.
So there it is. That was quite a tangent, that wasn't initially the point of this comment. The point WAS in fact to say thanks for this video. As you can see I've been having quite a difficult growing season and I now believe it to all be due to nutrient defficiencies that I previously misdiagnosed as bacterial or fungal issues. I've also built a compost pallet box near the garden so I can be better prepared for next year. Any advice on how to turn a lot with East Texas Red Clay 10 inches deep heavily laden with pine roots into a nutrient rich soil ready for planting?...without a backhoe or tractor tiller? Lmao

Epsom salts can kill all the microbes and fungi in your compost and castings bro that'll ruin your plants

Great video. This is the video I saw so far that discuss in detail what the deficiencies are and what they look like. I just realize I have most of the deficiencies mentioned here in my latest harvest.
I have a question. Is thickening of the leaves a sign of a deficiency? I found that my latest aragula feel thicker or tougher to touch than normal.

Hi Stephen, Thickening of leaves is not generally considered a sign of deficiency. It would be more associated with environmental conditions. When plants are stressed or exposed to extremes they'll respond by forming a thicker cuticle in order to protect their cells.

Start an auto seed in half pint pot with seed compost. When plant is ready knock out of Pot and put into large pot of hanging basket compost. Use fish blood and bone when it flowers. Water it when it needs it.
