I brought my dishwasher, washing machine and cooker here when I moved over. 15 years later, the dishwasher and cooker are still wrapped up I'm my shed, unused (every rental and property we bought had a dishwasher and cooker in already, plus for everythinguou bring will need an aussie adapter plug. A big pain in the A)! I did get to use my washer here for a few years, but when it needed a service, no-one would service it because it didn't meet Australian standards. My advice is to get those here. They're reasonably priced, and second hand is readily available on Facebook market place Sell yours before you go. 😊
Ooo yes, good shout. Those bigger appliances are all being provided for us which is great. I mean, we had already agreed to leave them for our house buyer anyway, but it's one less cost to think about when we get over. It's just everything else we need to get. Think there's about 3 things from the UK we're bringing that I have bought 2 adapter plugs for because they won't be used daily and I can just switch them out whenever they are needed! The plugs I got in black friday were actually brilliant because they have USB slots in them, so probably better for our phones etc than some of the standard sockets that will be in the house we move into.
Oh I'm feeling that stress knot too but for different reasons, so please know I understand. I'm in Perth and currently packing up my 21yo son who is moving to the other side of the country for a Uni graduate job. He is driving ( 4 days drive ) and I'm refusing to let him drive across the desert alone , yup even when they are 21, mums are allowed to stress. Sooooo this mum is going on a road trip , I'm crossing the country in a little car in early January 😂😂😂 and then flying home , we have so much of his stuff to sell because it won't fit in his car 😂😂 . Adventure awaits 😊. Take a look at Kmart , they are probably the best value department store for anything and everything you may need and you can get it shipped to your home .
I would 1000000% be going on that road trip too hahah, totally feel you! I hope it all goes well for both of you and he really enjoys the move and his new job - congrats on him getting it, too!!
Ohh good you saw this! I was about to comment on the other one haha. Next Friday will take us to the 19 day mark, and the dept of education said in their email they hoped it would be 'within a couple of weeks', so fingers crossed it's soon!
Don’t worry we are all very friendly down here. Just remember it’s very easy to get sunburnt even when it’s cloudy. You can get an insect repellant sunscreen combination cream, it’s very goood. Emergency services here is 000. Lots of initial costs at first that just can’t be avoided. Getting a phone number, bank account and a tax file number are the three most important things to do. Good luck to you. Australia needs people like you and your family.
I was actually wondering what the emergency services number was yesterday, so I think you read my mind, Lex! Thank you for this. I've made a list of things I did as soon as I landed in Sydney back in 2015 for the year, but just quadrupling that for the whole family this time haha.
Just remember that when the sun goes down, so does the temperature, except for tropical areas where it may be sweltering over December, January and February, night and day. Depends where you choose to be. A cool breeze can chill you and the kids if you only have summer-weight clothes. You will be able to buy what you need in Oz, but it may be more economical to bring or send whatever you have that may be suitable, given that small kids grow out of clothes rapidly. Clothes left behind are likely to be too small in a year. Or you can sell, give away or donate them in UK. Also Oz has rainy weather, either warm in the north or cool in the south. Also Cyclones in certain areas. Again, you can buy umbrellas, raincoats, hats, and gum boots (wellies) here, but if the kids only wear them a few times before they grow out of them, it may be better to bring them, then dispose of them. Then buy bigger sizes here. I’ve noticed that several British vloggers have expressed regret for leaving perfectly suitable coats, jackets, gloves, hats, raincoats, puffer jackets, (even business attire), etc, behind in UK, thinking they would have no need of them. They needed them when they travelled to cooler parts of Oz or to NZ.
Thank you for this! I’ve packed coats for all of us and things we wear often like joggers, jumpers, hoodies as well. I know myself even when it’s hot I still want things that bring me comfort like those items of clothing haha. The plan is to buy things we need once we’re there as well because it’s harder to fit EVERYTHING into just 2 bags each!
I live in the north east of Melbourne. Our suburb is so chilled and cool. Don’t believe the BS being put about by isolationist people with “issues “ Everyone in my street and our local shops are very sweet and nice. We also have the local Primary School a couple of minutes down the road . Hope you have a great new life here ✌️
Ahh thank you for this, I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all goes. It'll be a transition, but we know how much we love Aus so it's going to take a lot to deter us in the harder moments!
My comments here keep disappearing, I'll try again without brand names! 🤨 Please remember that you cannot control everything and just let go and dream of happy surprises! There are many stores with basic manchester, underwear, home essentials, etc and discount stores! You can't take everything but you can take the photos and the great memories! It's time to slow down and laugh, dance, play, hug and make more memories! 🙋👍❤️
I was trying to find your last comment because I remembered reading it in the email, then couldn't find it to reply to! So I saw the names of the stores before it disappeared thankfully!! I'm excited to get a lot of new things fresh over there, so it feels like a proper new start! We're going to feel like entirely different people in our new environment etc, so it'll be nice to have everything match that 🥰
@mariatateofficial I would prefer a fresh new decor as well - the start of a new, simpler, outdoor life! 🤗 Oh and don't miss the Boxing Day/New Year Sales! 🎉
just make sure you have sunhats, sunglasses (sunnies) and some high SPF suncream, especially for your kids...essential for the kids and most schools (what UK would call primary) will insist they wear a hat to play outside. Good to see more Brits coming to Perth. Not sure where in Perth you are going, but there are so many great suburbs that are far out with good transport links to the CBD. I live in Rockingham and it's great down here.
I wouldn't even wear SPF 15 in the UK haha. My daily moisturiser is 30 minimum and that's just my winter option, so Australia wouldn't be getting less than 50 even in the shade! Any brands of suncream you'd recommend?
@ it did take me at least 5 years to settle, I lost my daughter May 2023 my only child which is just heartbreaking for us s we miss and love her so much our lives feel empty now, we have no family over here, so we thought we may relocate back home to Scotland my husband always wanted to retire back home me not so much, I went home in May for 6 weeks to have a look at some houses but I am not warming to the idea, I do love Australia, but my family would love if we went back home to stay, I hope you and all the family have a happy and good life here, I will warn you it is very expensive here now you will see that when you come over. 👍💕
First time I've seen Mikey. Seems like a nice guy should fit in well. Down to earth always wins in Australia. No one likes arrogance. Although that's probably more a eastern Australia problem. Perth is super chilled in comparison. You'll be within drive of some great beaches. Plenty of options for weekends or adventures away north and south. Nothing worth stressing about. Especially for Mikey. It will be the most relaxed welcoming job he has probably ever had. Good luck 🇦🇺

Thanks beaut 💖 wonders what a weekly curl and daily dry shampoo can do these days hahah
In the lower 30's Celsius in Perth today.
Your trip from Perth to Brisbane to see Bluey World is a 5 hour flight each way. Just so you can take that into account.
Yeah 100%, we're thinking we'll do Sydney as well it a decent trip! Absolutely desperate to show the kids Sydney and where mummy and daddy met, too!

Make the sunscreen 50... Sun can be strong and 15 won't cut it.

A lot more Brits are moving to Australia of late, this seems to be the new trend

Mikey thanks you for this comment and says 'I really hope so' to the job being a bit more relaxed compared to his role here haha
I used Banna Boat in the US (I think was called) and I came out in rash.... nasty
I recommend going into a Cancer Council shop and asking for quality sun protection products, it really pays off! 😊
