Your 3 tops, bottoms and layers method is the best I’ve seen yet for creating a useful travel capsule. Thanks for sharing that!
I bring what I need for each day, and usually wear a button up sweater and cashmere wrap/sweater on the plane. Sure you can mix and match, but don’t sit upwind of other diners if it’s your 2nd wear day and you’ve been everywhere on foot. Please. Showering does not improve the smell on your clothes and neither does perfume. 60 years traveling and 20 total years living outside the States is enough to know there is no substitute for clean. Packing light is a personal option, but give the rest of us a break and find a laundromat.
Cashmere, linen, cotton and natural blend lightweight fabrics are available to almost every person who travels. Find a tjmaxx. White jeans and a French striped shirt have replaced yoga gear for travel. Chic women wear them at all ages. Your clothes were fine, but there’s no reason to pack schlep when presentable is just as easy. And let’s face it, most people pack schlep.

After watching this genius video I had to make a comment! I’m using a carry on as my only luggage for the first time and going to Europe for a month! I’m SO grateful I found your channel. I feel it’s going to make life more simple. Thank you so much! Just know you make a difference for people!!
I like packing cubes. They give me a sense of organization !
Also , with a carry on suitcase and a backpack one can get by for multiple days. A friend of mine travels for 2 to 3 weeks like this. Usually you can wash your clothes in the bathroom sink and let them dry overnight . Make sure to bring clothes that dry quickly.
We did London - 10 days - in December!
I also save underwear that is ready for trash….i bring it with me and just throw it out when used….more room , albeit, small amount for shopping.
Many hotels also have a laundry room
@@annazielinski6863same! 😉
I take just a small backpack (small enough to fit under the airplane seat in front of me) and a small crossbody purse for 2-week trips overseas.
The grid takes the 3x3 to the next level and makes it all make sense, thank you. Fellow Albertan here (well that's where it looked like you were flying from in one of your vids anyhow :) I'm heading to TO one of these days and definitely wanting to take carry on for that trip!!!
When we traveled I studied and researched packing light.
I got pretty good at it.
Basically I discovered that what you use at home everyday you used in Europe everyday.
I decided doing hand laundry was far easier than fighting heavy bags.
Try to book hotels with laundries and wash a batch of clothes weekly! Laundry “sheets” are TSA safe and nearly weightless.
Now this might not be good for everybody but you can carry everything in two shopping bags! They are durable and weigh mere ounces. You can add a strap to close them tight.
Uniqlo has Down Jackets that weigh ounces and are very warm. Add a pair of lightweight long johns for more warmth. A light wool beanie weighs a few ounces.
I go with 3-4 sets of clothes, one worn, and this is the bulk of the weight I carry.
If you need a lap top, get a smaller one and wrap it in a pair of jeans for protection.
You can simply pocket many smaller items.
I hope this helps. As I stated, it’s not for everybody.
Thanks!
great tips!
What brand of laundry sheets to you recommend?
Cubes are fine as long as you're not under a carry-on weight limit. Use different sizes of a quality ziplock bag for everything. Put some clothes in a 2+ gallon bag, zip them closed except for a small space, roll the bag with clothes towards the ziplock, close the zipper an you create a compressed lightweight packing cube. Undies can be done in a gallon bag. This is lighter, less expensive and easy to see everything in the bag. Wife and I did 3 weeks in Europe with 10kg carry on, using lightweight (1 pound) packable backpacks. Did laundry 1 time half way through using packed detergent and dryer sheets.
Never traveling without a hanging toiletry bag again! Thanks for the tips, Aly!
I love that the rather large sized hair dryer is a non negotiable. And when you see how pretty Aly’s hair looks, you know it was an expert packing choice. Seriously, the hair is gorgeous! 🇨🇦
Yeah it's so annoying that no matter how fancy a hotel is, it always has a super low-watt dryer, which is just not an option for most people who are needing to dry their hair. One either needs to be able to bring a lot of hair product on a plane to manage the frizz that comes from any low wattage dryer, or have a high wattage dryer.
I never take my own hair dryer. There’s always one in the hotel. Maybe not as good, but I’m on holidays, so it will be fine.
A must for me is a laundry bag. I think mine was from a cruise but an old pillowcase works well as an alternative. Never pack laundry in a plastic bag. Ew, it just breeds bacteria.
It’s not the clothing and my second pair of shoes, it’s my toiletries for my hair, face and body, even paring down! My meds and some face things, I put in my personal bag.
Great tips-thanks !! One to share...for a 2 1/2 week trip around Scotland I unzipped the bottom lining of my Sherpani bag and packed some items around the metal framework of the bag itself-kind of an unused space I think! Also just used it again for 4 days in Santa Fe so I could bring home bags of coffee I can't buy at home! LOVE my packing cubes and they are cheapies from IKEA years ago.
I always take an empty Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate packing cube (medium) for dirty socks and underwear so I can keep smelly items separate from clean clothes if I have to repack my luggage mid trip to change locations. It's also great for isolating damp swimsuits when it's time to pack.
Great video. I love the “packing grid”. I will be using this method moving forward; it makes so much sense! Keep the great videos coming!
Yes, all of this!
I am a eco-friendly/barefoot shoe girl, which can save space. My barefoot shoes and sandals and slippers pack pretty flat, and the thinner sole takes up much less room. I also use shampoo/conditioner/face wash/moisturizer/and body soap bars. They save space and last so much longer than the regular stuff… plus, just like those containers, the more you use them the smaller they get.. And I bring laundry detergent sheets, which take up virtually no space. I’m going on a five week trip to the UK and Ireland with just carryon and a backpack.
The 3x3 method is intriguing. I am a bit disappointed in me that this hasn't come to my mind yet😂. I will try this for my trip next week. I cannot bring my family of four to travel hand luggage only, but we only ever need one checked bag and small backpacks for everyone. This is okay for now.
We have the same luggage in an older version. We got it for international travel. But as a senior, the smaller size and weight works so much better. The smaller size fits clothes for a week easily but less room for shoes than a larger carry on. 👟 👠
I have been searching for ways to travel with my new pretty hat, thank you so much for this!!
Also for people that pack their compression cubes to the max, I found a little trick on another video that works really well. Instead of struggling to zip the compression zipper after packing - zip it first then put your items in and just zip the main zipper.
I just discovered packing cubes and absolutely love them. I have several different sets and sizes. I use them weekly. It's fun to see the different ways to pack. I've been using them in a suitcase, but have switched to a travel backpack. I always pack 2 weeks of clothes.
The belt tucking tip is good!
Big fan. No nonsense, thrifty but chic. I may use ziplock instead of packing cubes for now, no time.
Those work too!
I watch your videos and I do find lots of helpful tips, but you have travel to warm places and that makes packing so much easier. I’m about to take a winter vacation and I’m looking for tips on how to do that. All of the clothes will be much bulkier, so sometimes I feel like these kinds of videos are not realistic
Fair warning, I'm from a colder-than-average cold place, but maybe my strategies will give you some ideas. Layers! Merino base layers, or the synthetic costco base layers, and then a pair of fleece-lined sweatpants (double as pajamas), a fabulous warm cardigan sweater that might be bulky but you can wear it multiple days, and if you're going to be doing outside activities bring rain pants to go over the fleece pants and base layer, not snowpants (too bulky), as well as a packable puff jacket with a thin wind layer (will take up less space than a whole ski jacket). I think things like hats and scarves should feel at home on the slopes or out for dinner, otherwise I'm asking myself why they even got manufactured. I sometimes bring one warm, fleece hoodie for things like movie nights and if my room is too cold, plus it will look great under your packable puff jacket. Plenty of room is needed for all your wool socks (especially if you're going outside and need spares in case yours get wet). If you need a super warm coat (i.e. for below 0F) you can dress up or down somwhow, I'd recommend Eddie Bauer's duffle coats. If you're visiting family, see if they'll lend you the outdoor gear. If you're not from a cold place and going somewhere that's below 0 on the regular, I honestly would recommend buying your gear when you get there and then shipping or checking it back home afterwards. Even with online shopping, if you're buying stuff there you'll know it's made for the climate, and not only effective if it's above 20F.
I travelled from Canada to Norway in early September one year and in November on another occasion - both trips were for one week and I spent three weeks in the UK afterward on each occasion. So, for each monthlong trip, I used pretty much the Sudoku method of packing, all thin, layered items of clothing, plus a lighweight water-resistant breathable vest and jacket and waterproof Merrell shoes. A lightweight set of long underwear tripled as pj’s and leggings. A toque, a pashmina shawl and a pair of ballet flats. Everything was black or black combo except the vest and the pashmina and the toque. Quick dry Tilley undies and socks - two sets; laundered every second night. Works a treat.
I really appreciate all of your tips. Thank you!
Great tips. I have the same suitcase and love using it. It holds more than I thought it would.
For sanitary reasons, I would put the slippers in plastic bags so as not to transfer germs from the floor to your hairdryer and then to your hair when you dry it.
Great packing tips and I really should get the two wheel version of that travelpro as I need some new luggage
Thanks for the great info! Shoes are so difficult to decide on only 3! I really liked your outfit choices. You are the first person I have ever seen in my life with the exact same type of muscle/legs body type as myself. I will be traveling for a year to Europe and SE Asia leaving Sept. Some great tips!
My fave 3 shoes to PACK are: bronze thong sandals, black velvet ballet slippers, black pleather ballet flats (from Amazon). I wear my trainers/sneakers on travel days....so four pairs of shoes total...
Ooo I like your 3 by 3 system. I’ll try it next time. 😊
I'm doing a 3 week trip to Egypt next month and I'm going to try carry-on only. What sucks is Lufthansa has a carry on weight limit of 8kg, and I'm such an overpacker. I'm starting to plan from now and your tips have been so valuable!
My packing hack for shoes is to pack Pashions, they can be dress up and down and use different heels, so I can end up with several shoes only packing one
I don’t take any hair appliances with me. I usually just use whatever is in the hotel where we are staying. I’m not real fussy about that. Plus lucky for me or unlucky… 😊My hair is dry so I wash my hair two times a week. So I might use a hairdryer once, on vacation. I’ll bring clothing or shoes that are on their last leg so to speak and will pitch what I can before coming home which leaves room for a souvenir of clothing or two.😊
Thank you, this was concise and helpful 🎉
I’m trying this for my cruise next year
Grrrrlll, love the grid! And all your clothes, where do you shop? :)
Your suggestion about packing things into the shoes are a necessity for some people. But I personally do not like packing things into my shoes, even though my feet do not sweat. But your suggestion about the two pair of shoes would work nicely if you were not going to meetings or professional outings. The tennis shoes and the sandals would work for most people. I personally don’t like wearing sneak except for going to the gym.
Thank you! Would have loved for you to detail the PJ issue, though - for all the detail we got about outfits, what's the PJ strategy? There are so many variables lots of extra PJs can mitigate when traveling so it would be helpful to know what you did there. Also, really glossed over the pods and it was hard to follow the specifics that would inevitably come up like folding size being really important and the pods not being color coded or having a label option to them. Would love to see some pod bags that are designed to address that. Thanks!
I need to try this on my next trip because last one I had to expand the backpack. Then used a tote bag for the overflow from shopping in Chicago.😢
Luckily, most hotels provide hair dryers because my Dyson ways an absolute ton! Great tips Ali! Overpacking is at epidemic proportions in my family. My sister once took a duffel bag filled entirely with shoes to Hawaii and then wore the same pair of flip flops (that she bought there) for the whole vacation LOL! Lesson learned!
Great tips - I subbed!
It's like you read my mind!! I am not a minimalist either and I was wondering how can I pack a for 8 days in a small bag. You did ten so I know I can do it😂😂.
I just found your channel. So nice to find a Canadian doing travel hacks. Can you do a video on flying with a personal item only? I like to do weekend trips to Toronto, usually with Porter. Thanks. 😊
TicTacToe with your clothing ! Works so well ~
Such good inspo, Aly! Keep it comin’. xo
Oh, I LOVE this!
I LOVE your 3 x 3 method! I tried the 5-4-3-2-1 method - but then OVERpacked! I always pack [too] many scarves/shawls/sarongs...
Weight and size limits are going to be the biggest hurdle though, especially if you travel overseas as many airlines limit you to about 25-26 lbs total (and this includes the weight of your bag, which could be 5-6 lbs empty). Of course if you're flying on airlines like Delta who have a generous 50 lb carry-on limit, and don't seem to check bag sizes as long as it fits in the overhead bin, I've taken 7-8 days worth of clothes (partially by reusing pants for 2 days each though, so only packing 4 pairs). But airlines are cracking down on the weight restrictions and size limitations it seems, as a means to get more people to pay for checked bags. In fact most airlines (other than Frontier and Spirit) don't seem to care how much your carry-on weighs as long as it fits in the bin (never had issues with Southwest, Delta, or United at least, but again, these were only domestic flights--international is different).
For liquids, I generally try to buy what I need at my destination if I can (I know it means spending some money but visiting say a WalMart or Traget at your destination can be helpful). I generally only bring the liquids I can't get at my destination, or from a hotel. So being a male, I don't need too much personally and almost sometimes just travel with an electric razor, some shaving creme (in a travel container that's very small), toothbrusth & toothpaste and maybe a small travel size of mouthwash (although I can usually buy this where I'm going, but this is for emergencies mainly).
Make sure you are converting KG to lbs. 8kg is about 17.7lb.
I don't agree with bringing only 1 USB-C cable, even if all your devices only use USB-C. I recommend getting a brick that can charge at least 2 devices at the same time. You don't want to be going to sleep and having to wake up half way through sleeping just to switch the device you're charging. Cables take up almost no space. There's also a chance they can break or get lost, so it is good to have spares. But if you're super minimalist with just an iPhone and Airpods, then you'll probably be fine.
I usually bring at least 2 smartphones, airpods, action camera, macbook. So I have a few devices that might need to be charged.
Genius!
Also, it feels like we’re going backwards when we fly because in the past, they used to actually give very nice meals. Can you imagine lobster dinner on a flight from Dallas to California ? For most flights, It was meals, consisting of chicken ,salad, peas, and a dessert . For children, they would give milk, and for adults, tea, coffee or adult beverages. Of course these were times when the airplanes were not so packed. Can you also imagine being able to recline in your chair enough to sleep for over sees trips and people sitting by the window would not disturb you because there was enough room to go around, the people in the row. The reason this changed was because through engineering they were able to make planes carry more weight therefore they could put more people on and therefore you now see the result. Sometimes progress in one area is not progress for the humans.
My husband is an aerospace engineer.
Stupid question 😊I haven’t travelled in years 😊what about souvenirs 😊gifts T-shirts ornaments etc 😊 thanks so much for sharing just found your channel 😊 love from Canada 🇨🇦 😊
Don’t feel like you have to buy souvenirs. T shirts-ok you’ll wear them. Other things- they gather dust. I stopped buying souvenirs when I saw them In trash cans once l left the room.
Honestly, souvenirs usually become clutter surprisingly fast. That cute doodad just doesn’t look the same when you get home.
That said, I have bought some things I couldn’t find at home.
I ship them home. Just find the closest shipping place, like UPS in the US, or post office. They also usually have boxes.
Pack an extra bag and check your bag to return. I now but Christmas ornaments which are small.
Great tips thanks so much 🥰🥰
Great video, thank you!!!
I love this!
I always use packing cubes. But i loke the ones that unzip all the way around. The ones from tripped are difficult to pack since they only unzip half way ( at least for me). I like the 3x3 method. I will give that a try.
Ever try the flight flap for electronics? Its awesome.
Great video!
Great tips. Thanks 🙌🏽
You are a genius!!!! do you count your airplane outfit as part of th3 3-3-3 combo thanks for the video -- and being so precious.
I don't think so. I think that was part of her "what if" items, airport outfit and a dress.
Find someone who looks at you like Aly does to her carry on bags!
🤭
This is all fairly familiar to me. I just wouldn’t pack a hair dryer because many hotels have them any way. Also, white in SF totally marks you out as a tourist. Same for NYC and probably many other places around the world. That also goes for white shoes outside the country too, and it’s not necessarily a safe thing to stand out as American. So, I never travel with white clothing or shoes.
The pouches you had your electronic charger in, where did you get that at? I want those lol
Can you suggest your method for Canadian autumns and winters please?
I like packing cubes but haven’t used the compression type. Do the compression cubes cause clothes to be wrinkled? Also, I appreciated the 3x3 chart you put on the screen. Very helpful. 👍🏼
I couldn't follow how the lines in the scheme translate into 27 looks but anyway it's just combinations from math: 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 :)
I'd probably pack one less layer because if it's warm enough, no layer is also a look :) which otherwise brings in 9 more looks (3 tops x 3 bottoms).
I do more or less the same when I pack depending on the length of the journey (if it's just 4 days, I stick, to 2 tops x 2 bottoms), but it's important to make sure that everything goes with everything in this 'capsule' :)
Also, adding a dress makes me feel prepared for whatever happens while on a trip xD
Just be aware that for Australian airlines the 7 kg weight limit for carryon is the combined weight of carryon luggage & personal item.
I like this method. But would you do a travel wardrobe for someone like myself that goes to conferences where you have to dress up. Which I love to do. I would also need one evening dress with evening shoes and a small clutch for the formal dinner. They usually have and a dance. I like to wear a lot of skirts and dresses to these conferences.
I have the same Soundcore in purple. Looking at the tomtoc bags; I wonder if they have a personal item size backpack….
Lovely video but weight restrictions on budget european sirlines are stricter and just 1 bag plus i need to pack meds and for extra cold weather and summer combined
Great tips
Oh gosh…the link for those flown pants doesn’t work! Would you be able to check that? I love them!
Can't wait for the trip videos! I noticed you included a clip from Ashbury Street. What bag did Chris bring?
Yes! That was such a fun neighborhood! 💕 He brought the 2-wheeler 20" travel pro!
How do you thoroughly clean out the travel pouches? And, how do you fit in the hat along with toiletries and packing cubes?
Do you have another link for the flowy pants? It’s the maroon color one.
Hey Aly, do you use a travel agent for all your endeavors?
I need a recommendation for one , i have a party of 14 at least travelling over xmas to some AI .
Yeg
Hi there, I usually don't but I can send you contact info for a good TA, please send me an email: info @ alysmalls.com
Question I know you are limited on the liquids you can carry on. So what if u put some on in your carry on bag. And another quart size in your personal item? Will that work? thx
For myself, I can remember when people traveled they would take a couple of suitcases and a cosmetic bag which a person could check all of this or maybe just carry your little cosmetic bag on the plane. There was no issue with the liquids which as you may recall, was due to the mishap, they had one time. I still like to check my bags. If you get an American Airlines credit card, you get one free suitcase checked I feel like we have entered a period where we have had to go backwards from where we were before. But if you are 30 or younger you don’t rememberhow nice it was.
may i ask what time of year you visited San Fran please? we went in the summer, had a fabulous time seeing all the sites, including Murr woods, Coat tower, P39, Alcatraz and the bridge, vent to the bridge a few times but sadly always shrouded in mist. your clip of a clear sky is beautiful and you see the magnificent bridge for all its finery. Love from the UK
Aly, I love those flowy pants but the link doesn’t work. Are they sold out?
Totally doing this next week on an 11 day trip to Dublin and Barcelona! Thank you!!!
I tried the liquid pouches, filling them takes a while, and you have to be so careful because the opening is so small. I love the idea but I don’t have the patience for them
Good to know! I was about to get them, but that would drive me crazy.
@@rnguyen2516I bought them for our last trip to Spain for almost a month and LOVED THEM, by the time the trip is over, they will be practically empty, a great tip before you fill them is to blow some air in them to expand (like blowing a balloon) and they will be 100% easier to fill, also tap them on a surface as you fill them with thicker products like lotion.
My interest now is packing only a personal item whenever possible because I see now that there are fees/major weight limit for carry ons
What about when you get stopped and your bag gets searched? Last time traveling international they were randomly pulling people aside to search them! I’ve noticed this a couple of times and it’s why I don’t use the packing cubes
Have you gone on a cruise and packed only carry on? Met a gal on our 14 day cruise who only packed carry on and a personal bag.
Do you bring a purse for dinners out
Please have Chris do one for the guys! Thanks!
I did 2 already. Check the other vids!
Can you please let me know the name of the travel pouch for tech , navy and pink at the end of the video when you are on the plane. Love the videos, watching from Australia
HI Aly. I am assuming you do laundry when away if you are packing this light? Thx
Im going cruising for 56 nights on four different ships and climates so will be packing coats and thermals
What do you do if you accidentally made purchases and only had the carry on backpack with you when you left?
What are you doing for deodorant stains
Idk if I could go to a hot climate and wear any of the same clothes again especially the tops
Try merino wool t shirts. They are the traveller’s dream.
How many bras do you guys pack for a week in a summer trip?
I would wear one, and pack two. One is neutral, one is black. Swamp boob is a real thing.
Hi Aly, with the 3x3 are you doing laundry? 3 tops for more than a few days is wishful thinking for most 🙂
3 tops could work. I just returned from a 6D/5N trip. I packed 2 tops, wore third on travel day. I also used my 2 PJ tops [a long-sleeved tunic and a T shirt] for lounging in the hotel and cover-up.
Merino wool is the answer for tops. And more. Basically self cleaning.
Carryons are weighed. Personal items are not. Put the heavy stuff in your personal item.
Can you do a carry on with weight restriction of 7kg over 5 weeks holiday
Does that include what you are wearing on the day of travel?
no
How about packing for colder climates? Trying to pack like for Canada (Banff!) in the fall and…. I need some layers.
layer with Underwear: merino wool, silk, technical blends + 2 pairs of socks, + hat, scarf, gloves + silk liners.
❤❤
I’m going cruising for 56 nights four different ships and climates so will need coats and thermals etc
I love silk, merino wool and technical blends for 'underwear' during COLD weather. I can't bear the cold... And since I discovered layering undershirts and merino clothes I stay toasty - not bulky! Have a Fabulous trip - Bon Voyage!
@@nuvoclassic thanks
My travel agent gave me this pack system before I seen this not sure where she got it
Great tips! I'm already doing most things but I got some new ideas. Do you happen to have a video about your pharmacy kit? I looked for it but couldn't find it and 'd love to see the contents!!!
Even though I buy clothes that are “wrinkle proof”, they always wrinkle in the compression bags. Any hints on how to handle this problem?
I take a travel water spray bottle. Hang stuff up at destination, fill spray bottle with water, and lightly spray front sides and back. Or nix the bottle and steam clothes in bathroom with hot shower and closed door. I only travel with these fabrics; rayon/Tencel/bamboo, silk, merino wool, nylon, satin, polyester. I roll my clothes in compression cubes. I wear light cotton hooded sweater, not pack it....
