    Thank you for your 4 year old video. It completely settles the question of which automotive led bulbs are worth it in signal/marker applications

      Haha, this video is getting old. I guess they still sell the same model bulbs now? I don't think they've made much changes to them.

    The ZEVO LEDs are made in Italy. I bought a pair today and they are brighter. I like how they light up faster too.

    Already running some of these zevo 3157's for DRL's in my '00 silverado. Love them and after watching this, I'm definitely going to replace my brake lights with 3157R's and amber turn signals with 3157A's.
    Some older vehicles (like mine) will need an LED-compatible turn-signal flasher to avoid "hyperflash" problems; So to anyone out there looking at buying these, make sure to do some research on your vehicle before replacing your turn signals with these.

    • @JohnDoe-gm5qr
      @JohnDoe-gm5qr 8 років тому +1

      +Eric Butler Do some research if you own a Volkswagen or similar car, they have something called a CAN bus and that can cause problems with plain old LEDs that have no resistor or other circuit in them. My best advice is to make sure that you can return them even if the package is opened and they bulbs were used. This way if for some reason your car doesn't like the bulbs you aren't stuck with them. Make sure to ask these questions BEFORE YOU PAY and of course keep the receipt where it won't get lost or damaged or even exposed to excessive heat and sunlight if it is that damned thermal paper they all use now.

    I have these in my wife's Kia soul. 1157 and my neon. 3157. they are great. The reason why it would say not street legal is to protect the company from lawsuits and local laws vary all over the place. the ones I have were purchased from Wal-Mart for 19.99. A general rule with LEDs as most of you all know. use the bulb with the same color as the lens.

      Method 82 thanks does that help keep the brightness about the same as an incandescent dim it down a bit instead of using the white color?

      +Steven Cassada Great! Glad to help.

    • @JohnDoe-gm5qr
      @JohnDoe-gm5qr 8 років тому

      +Steven Cassada The nice thing about these is they are plug and play for cars with a bulb out detection system or CAN bus. Any car that has either of the two would either need the computer reprogrammed or need load resistors IF they don't have them already in the bulbs. In some cars the gremlins can get really upset with you and you need a resistor or bulb that already has one because in rare instances really strange things can happen. There is a UA-cam video with a Jeep Patriot that had some kind of bizarre problem. Until I saw that I thought that it was mostly a problem with Volkswagens and similar cars. I have an 06 Jetta and that car is somewhat finicky about bulbs.

    The Zevo's are great! I was a little skeptical at the way they were manufactured with the metal heatsink and the way the LED's where positioned on them.They look great on my 2001 LR Discovery!

    • @davidhatzenbuhler6888
      @davidhatzenbuhler6888 8 років тому +2

      +JUKE179r LEDs are very unidirectional light sources. The Sylvania Zevo and Phillips Vision 3157 & 1157 LED modules have SMT LEDs that are purposely angled such that they are focused directly into the sweet spot on most original equipment Tungsten bulb reflectors in the original lamp housings. This allows the extremely bright and focused unidirectional LED light to sufficiently mimic the original omnidirectional Tungsten Filament bulbs without being overpowering. As you can see the light completely fills the Tungsten Halogen lamp housing and is noticeably brighter and more visible than the original Tungsten bulbs but not so bright that it attracts the attention of law enforcement or, more importantly, causes other drivers problems.
      I would be interested in a longer distance night highway visibility demo where Tungsten and LED bulbs were compared from 1/2, 3/4, & 1 mile distances on a straight flat road.

    Hi Kenneth.......If you still have your Dakota, I'd love for you to do a comparison going back to an incandescent bulb but this time try a 3457 which is (40/3 candlepower), vs. your original incandescent 3157 (32/3cp). In all fairness your 3157 may have been worn and the inner-bulb coated with carbon from the filament burning off over the years.Also, the best incandescent-bulb for that 3457 is the GE Nighthawk, but right now they're inflated on Amazon, unless you can find it in a parts-store and pay no more than $5 a pair, or try any another well-known branded 3457.
    There's a possibility it might be brighter than the ZEVO. What many people don't understand is LED retrofits (cheap or brand-names like the ZEVO or Philps) DO NOT work well in most tail-lamps since the lamp housings optics were originally designed for an incandescent bulb. While your video does show more luminocity, the camera or even the human eye can be tricked.......maybe dead-on it's brighter, but not as bright as an incandescent off-axis and off to the side, high/low and at all angles.
    An even better experiment is to back the vehicle up about 10' from a white wall and then take a photo or video of what's actually projected in brightness and beam-pattern on the wall. That's the best test vs. photometric lab-tunnel testing .
    Learned all this on the Candlepowerforum's auto-lighting board, that has a few automotive lighting engineers who run that section for the past 15yrs religiously.

    I bought a pair of the regular Sylvania LED bulbs. They're definitely brighter than the original 1157 bulbs I had. And my particular tail lights they leave kind of a dark Center which I don't like. Has anyone ever compared them against the zevo?

  • @jaymesnin
    @jaymesnin 7 років тому

    i put them on my 2004 mustang gt and they are cool but they are triggering the light out switch. so when i use my turn signals both sides the lights flash alot faster. i dont know if i can get pulled over for that. my tailights look like strobes. people prolly think the police got someone stopped because the mustang has 3 red bulbs per side.

    I'm wondering why all the tests for incandescent and Sylvania were done with the vehicle in the dark, while the Pilot test is clearly in light. As a result, the test is skewed. I'll look to other videos that give fair testing in exact same environmental conditions.

    • @KennethSettles
      @KennethSettles  5 років тому +1

      Nope, they were all tested within 30 mins during the day. The camera probably made it look darker and lighter. I should've locked the exposure, but I didn't.

    Comparing side-by-side stills of this video, the incandescent bulbs are brighter than the Pilot LEDs when fully illuminated.
    Or it at least appears to be. I may be mistaken, but I believe the incandescent bulbs are white/clear, when I think they should really be red. Why compare red LEDs to white incandescent bulbs? Bananas to plantains.

    • @KennethSettles
      @KennethSettles  6 років тому

      I believe the incandescent bulbs are supposed to be clear (oem). The Pilot LED bulbs were white as well, and they weren't as bright. The Zevo bulb was the red, and clearly brighter than the other two.

    • @hemidude73
      @hemidude73 6 років тому

      I wonder how they would compare if they were red. In either case, this video has definitely sold me on Sylvania ZEVO LEDs for my tails. I drive a Dakota, so this video was perfect.

    • @punker4Real
      @punker4Real 6 років тому

      The clear bulb is a fuller spectrum where RGB makes white, while the LED dongle is red spectrum (it will not change the red output in any way) the Clear/white bulb will let more yellow ish threw through a red lens... on the RED/Green spectrum, RED+GREEN = yellow.. So the clear incandescent bulb has a much higher advantage over the RED only LED.

    • @dennistaylor7830
      @dennistaylor7830 6 років тому

      The test is skewed because the incandescent and ZEVO are clearly with the vehicles in the dark, while the Pilot is with the vehicle in a lit area.

    • @MexicanLeaderTaco

      with led lights use the color of the lens. red lens use red led. hope that helps

    • @zaneg6783
      @zaneg6783 8 років тому

      +AlexTaco yeah, I tried a red set after watching the vid. Definitely brighter. Red lens allow red light to pass through. Regular clear incandescent bulbs do give off some red light but that's not the case with a white led. With LEDs definitely go with the color of the lens.

    • @MexicanLeaderTaco
      @MexicanLeaderTaco 8 років тому

      just and update. vleds.com hands down the best led bulbs I've used in my 05 Silverado. I tried everything at the local auto parts stores.
