I think the gh6 and the state of 4/3 mirrors shows how good the gh5 was as a camera. The gh5 is still A really good option for videographers.

I first bought the GH-1 back in 2008. Even then there were predictions of the imminent death of MFT. And yet great cameras like the G9 and the EM-1 III and enthusiastic users continue to prove the doomsayers wrong. MFT has a lot of advantages and Can’t wait for both the Panasonic and Olympus flagships later this year.

What if Panasonic would make an official electronic lens adapter and speedbooster for EF lenses with built in ND? I have a Fotodiox ND throttle and Viltrox speedbooster adapter. I tired of having to choose one or the other. Or if Fotodiox can make an ND throttle for mft. It's only available for X, L and E-mount. I'm considering picking up an XT-3 for this reason actually. Not heavily invested in mft though, so it won't be such a big deal for me, but I'd happily pick a new mft camera up (I'm still using BMPCC og) if this kind of product was available

One thing I really hope they add to the GH6 is RAW video as Jordan mentioned and I hope the screen is a bit brighter as I find the GH5 screen in daylight and bright light is a bit hard to see. Looking forward to finding out more about this camera especially that it might have a 24mp sensor due to the 5.7K video and how that will work in terms of dynamic range, noise and diffraction if it is a higher megapixel sensor than 20mp

hmmmm. What to think about this announcement and the new GH 5 II? I am a proud GH5 owner. Bought it after a lot of time weighing pros vs cons. And for a very long time I was very happy about it. For years, the GH5 has some features that Canon, Sony and other only recently start adding to their setups. Articulating screen, dual card slots, no limit recording, no overheating. Every time I saw new camera announcements where they were bragging about one of these, it made me laugh. But my work shifted a bit, and the unreliable autofocus (even after all the updates), the awful low light performance, even the lack of prores started to hurt. I was more and more leaning towards Sony. The FX3 pulled me over and I am finally saving up for this camera. (In Belgium is even way more expensive than other parts of the world for some reason!!!)
I am quite sure the GH5 II is not the update I need. But maybe the GH6 will be? Or do I need to hope that this triggers Sony to come up with a better FX3 version.

FF might become their new focus for stills cameras, even though the S1H exists. Certainly, there a lot more focus on making the S1 and S5 good stills cameras, but at the same time, I do feel like without PDAF, Panasonic can lose out to Sony, or even within L-Mount, it could lose out to Sigma, especially if they make a full sized camera closer in design to the sd Quattro than the fp.
Certainly, if you're much more of a photographer, you'll probably be far more interested in what OMDS makes as their next MFT camera. OMDS had a lot to say about its existence and future plans at CP+ 2021, but with a "revolutionary camera" for 2022 and no new dates for the lens roadmap that OMDS is committing to... I'm not sure about what's next.

The GH6 announcement refers to 5.7K. Plus ProRes RAW for the GH5-II, so they must give this to the GH6. Guess what? The Panasonic EVA1 Camcorder is 5.7K and has ProRes RAW. A coincidence?
    EVA1 specs...
    5.7K 5720x3016 sensor - 17.25 MP
    4K/10-bit 4:2:2
    Dual sensitivity ISO 800 & 2500
    400Mbps 10-bit 422 All-Intra
    ProRes RAW
I guess the GH6 will be similar to the EVA1, the same sensor, dual-ISO, ProRes RAW, 400Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2, All-Intra etc.
So how will they do this?
    GH5 - 5184x3888 - 17.3x13mm (225mm2) - 20.1 MP - 1.33:1 (cropped to 5184x2916 for 16:9 - 15 MP) - high-res but small pixels (bad for low light)
    EVA1/GH6? - 5720x3016 - 24.6x12.97mm (319mm2) - 17.2 MP - 1.89:1 (cropped to 5361x3016 for 16:9 - 16 MP) - high-res but larger pixels (better for low light)
How would Panasonic squeeze more sensitivity from the GH6. Well the sensor is 40% larger than the GH5 (probably meaning no IBIS unless the body is larger). Plus there's the new Venus Engine, and dual-ISO to extend dynamic range while reducing noise. I have seen results of the EVA1's dual-ISO system, and it is revolutionary.
Maybe? Oh, and BTW - the EVA1 body is $6,500 at B&H. Ouch.

Rumors were saying that they were planning on releasing three versions of GH6. Hybrid, Photo Centric and Video Centric I wonder if they still planning on doing that.

Internal raw might come annoyingly close to infringing on RED's patents. But as with Blackmagic using compressed BRaw, I hope this is possible.

*I'm so glad Panasonic is still supporting MFT sensor based technology. In regards to the said announced GH6 camera, 5.7K 10 Bit ? Is that spec 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 ? If it's the latter, then I'm not all that impressed. I think the absolute minimum spec should be 5.9K or straight 6K resolution. Is it even possible to have an MFT based sensor which can read out 8K resolution, or would it have too many compromises ? I think the concentration on 4K based features is rather antiquated at this point. Like it or not, we're living in the Age of 8K & 12K resolution video now, so, making cameras under 6K resolution is not where the market is going. Besides, how long will the Netflix & Discovery delivery standards remain @ the 4K resolution level ?*

Yes, internal BRAW to USB-C storage, such as an SSD. But this is Panasonic, they haven't done anything new for them in a, what, a decade? I think their last new thing was DfD-AF, which still isn't working well even on the gh5ii.

Sounds good panny boi. I really hope it's amazing. My gh5 still kicks ass. My gh4 kicked but as well. I hope they live long and prosper. Gh5, speedbooster, 18-35 is legendary. I'm sure the gh6 will be even better. Always the auto focus they have to prove. If that's on point this thing will rock.

Jordan wants a Clutched Focus Ring,... the rest of us want manual rings - the Sony G-master with the push/pull lockable ring is the best solution for good operator focus and occasional AF use.

They better update AF to phase detect. DFD really does suck for video with its hunting, and inaccuracy in low/flat light conditions.

let's be honest, at this point I don't think Panasonic are ever leaving DFD for PD...And I'm saying this as a GH5 user. It would be cool to see, but I doubt it.

    My GH6 Features Wishlist -
    Hybrid AF
Dual Native ISO (640, 4000 ISO)
4K 120 FPS 10 Bit with no crop
BRAW / Prores RAW Output (agree on the wish for internal)
Multi-shot High Res Mode like the G9
Option to De-clutter the Menu by moving less used menu items to an “Other” subfolder

Would be amazing! There's little room between sensor and mft mount though? I suspect it's hard to pull off. I'd be happy with something like the Fotodiox ND throttle for MFT mount. No idea why they only support E, X and L mount

Did you forget about Dual Native ISO? I was seriously disappointed to see this wasn't included in the GH5M2. It would basically be a requirement in the GH6 to keep people on MFT. Noise is still the biggest drawback to MFT and Dual Native ISO mitigates that substantially. So if it doesn't have Dual Native ISO, forget about the whole thing.

    • @petouser

Well, in case of the GH5M2 it was a sensor limitation. Pretty sure it will be included with the new sensor.

For Panasonic, to make this a great comeback and beat the competition of Sony and Canon they need to introduce mobile phone technology in this camera.
First, the micro Four third lens win with price. You get better lenses than your mobile phones but not overly expensive lenses making it a great camera to transition to coming from a mobile phone. Second, The camera needs to address the problem most people have when buying a camera which is, why would they buy a camera if they can record it on a mobile phone have have all those software features as well as ease of access and usability. The GH6 should introduce android like OS with apps, software features, and streaming capabilities. People who stream or upload on social media will love the ability to record, edit and upload right on the camera without needing to go to a computer (Great for vlogging.) The camera should have High speed USB charging and wireless data transfer to PC's. Also Cloud backup solutions should also be a feature. Of course it should improve on features it already does but all the cameras are doing that.
This camera really needs to be a next level camera and solution for people who want some things better than their phone that fits their video recording needs full packed with features and ease of use as their phones for a smaller price tag for a combined price of a camera, lenses, and other accessories. If it does that, it will fit so many people's needs who simply need a better video / photo camera than their phones without afraid to buy expensive lenses and other additions. Sony and cannon don't have that flexibility at the moment.

panasonic is really pushing the video situation wayyy above anything. definitely giving a run for the money to sony's. my only gripe is i'm the kind of hybrid shooter where photos and videos BOTH are equally important to me, and there's not just a lot of cameras that do BOTH equally well. I HAVE TO KEEP two bodies, and definitely TWO ECOSYSTEMS if i wanna keep up the production level high, it's just not the time for a 50-50 camera. Maybe a couple of years more?
