Jordan does, as always, a great job of running through a camera's features and performance. But the performance that sticks in my head is Chris' interpretive focus dance. It was very, erm, memorable.

It's bonkers that they are still using contrast based autofocus system in 2021. Come on Panasonic, learn a thing or two from Sony when it comes to precise autofocusing algorithm.

This was very informative! Most other reviewers basically trashed the GH5II, saying "it's got nothing new, it sucks, blah blah" but in reality it seems like a very solid update.

I am not disappointed in this update. Sharper brighter screen, better audio, 4k 60p @ 10 bit so you could shoot an event all day in V-Log which is included, backwards compatible battery option, live streaming, improved menus, power delivery, better ibis, improved profiles, honestly, it’s a lot.
The improved auto focus is worth the purchase alone. The Red recording Bar around the Monitor is awesome. And that Anamorphic 6k Mode is just sick, wow!
A lot of stuff for a cheaper price than the GH5 on launch.

I purchased a GH5 II last week and it is awesome (coming from a Sony A6400 owner).
This thing is a powerful tool. Mobile streaming from your phone is just next level stuff
The internet likes to shit on pana but the footage looks great. Good upgrade imho.

Thanks for publishing so many excellent camera reviews! I hope you might consider publishing a video that compares the Lumix G9 to the Lumix GH5m2, especially in terms of image quality and continuous AF (video and photos). This would be helpful for people using the Lumix G85 or Lumix G9 who are contemplating an upgrade within the Lumix micro-four-thirds family.
Which one do you prefer?

Basically if you do a LOT of video, shortfilms (with manual focus) and love to take your camera on holiday for photos or videos (with a small footprint) that's perfect. It's a refreshed GH5 for those about to purchase one.

Great vid guys! My biggest hope for the MK2 (or GH6) was for the ability to punch in to manually focus while recording... I haven't heard mention of it, but can you confirm if it's possible? Drives me crazy when trying to focus during a shot without an external monitor!

I use a gh5 with a PL 14-140mm (lightning fast AFmotor) in daytime and a Sigma 16mm 1.4 in lowlight. So, I record in FHD, 50fps, one area, metering in the box, speed +2, sensitivity -2, contrasty profile. Pulling focus between near (1m) and far (100m) up and down I notice NO transitions whatsoever. Nothing organic/snappy, just in focus! In lowlight I really need to take notice of light and contrast or I am at risk that the AF loses it. I also noticed that I have fair range of in focus when in MF, starting with infinity. I can switch to AFC if something gets to close. If the AF goes AWOL, I have FCP 😊.
As for the mk2/gh6 the detection has improved, the basic AF just a notch. I don’t need to upgrade because I am more then happy with my gh5 .
I don’t think Pana promised us a one size fits all camera, so get to know your gear 😛
Final question; is there anyone out there who bought a Sony for its IBIS? 😉
This is a bigger update than I was expecting, honestly. If I owned a GH5, I wouldn't buy the GH5 II. But starting out, the GH5 II has a lot of neat upgrades that might be worth considering. Hopefully, it does cause the prices on the GH5 and the G9 to drop on the used market.
Lol at 11:08. Part of me thinks the anti reflective coating on the sensor is a nod to the Speedbooster + Sigma combo. I love that! I personally use the 10-25mm f/1.7. I'll upgrade to the GH5 II. GH6 is a bit too much camera for my needs. I am also getting the 25-50mm f/1.7 :)
Sony's sensors were already almost as quiet as they are today (in the image-noise sense) by the time the one in the GH5 was released, so I'm not surprised that you don't see much difference against newer cameras. It simply isn't possible to do much better than that within the limits of an m43 sensor.
I think that also explains why we see the GH6 coming in at 5.7K. While it would be physically straightforward to engineer a higher-resolution m43 sensor, there just aren't enough photons to make it worthwhile. I think that the same reasoning applies to their decision to reserve the higher-dynamic-range VLogL version for the GH5s and BGH1 with their larger sensors. In order to extend the highlight DR beyond 81 IRE as they did in those cameras they'd have to decrease the gain, and that would increase shadow noise.
Also, adding more pixels to the sensor would make both it and the processor hotter and more power-hungry.
I've always adapted to M43 so I've never had AF nor do the lenses I have. So AF will never be a selling point to me. The IBIS is what was always so good on these cameras
Bought a G9 first, then GH5s. BOTH are fantastic.
You all keep sleeping on the G9, I'll buy another for cheap.

Can you check if the GH5 Mark2 is able to output HDMI and USCB while showing the image on the LCD screen? For example with the RS2 and a Ninja V or the Raveneye. Now I'm using the GH5 and as soon as I plug in the HDMI and the usbc the LCD Screen turns black. Would love to hear from you
GH6 is out now and we just bought a GH5II because there are some amazing deals on that camera and it is basically insurance that it will be updated more in the future. We feel that we will purchase a GH6 when the used market becomes more saturated in 1 year or so when many will sell it because they found the GH6 too complicated and it just sat in their closets for 1 year. By then, we suspect prices will come down substantially to where it will be an exceptional value, not to say it isn't now but saving $1000 in business is well worth it on the balance sheet.
I noticed at 4:20 a slight hum in your audio. I've had the same issue with my Rode Wireless Go ii, still trying to find solutions to avoid it.
i have been advised to use this camera mounted to my windshield for in car video recording shots through the front windshield do you think it would work , you think the stabilisation would be good enough for that? thanks for any advice

Fellow Albertans, you left one important thing out: Can the GH5II output in "6k" anamorphic mode to an external monitor when recording? In other words, is the HDMI-out now v2.1? On my GH5 I've had to resort to using an iPhone or iPad with Adam Wilt's FieldMonitor to be able to see what I'm shooting externally, not to mentioned de-squeezed. (The GH5's LCD will only de-squeeze 2x. Anything below that has to be set to "off", meaning a squeezed image on the LCD). Just to recap, the GH5 in open gate mode (6k) cannot output to an external monitor over HDMI. Have they fixed this with the GH5II? Cheers!
I record all my daughters soccer games with a Fuji xt2 but the video recording limit is a pain ( I own the grip with batteries also) along with just wondering if I should get a more modern video/stills camera. Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you.🇨🇦

Hey guys. Would you please do a test to see whether the A7R3a has updated color science or autofocus as compared to the A7R3? Some might have the same question regarding the A7R4 and 4a, but the A7R3a is a much older model that would benefit more from the update. Thank you.

how much shaking can a camera like this take? I ma a mountainbiker, and need a camera suitable for trail/nature photography Would it be fine to have it in a backpack while riding? I am looking for a camera most suitable to have with me at all times in my backpack.
At 10:20 what is that "MM + 1 2/3" to the right of the aperture?
I assume Manual Metering, and it's measuring that it is 1 2/3 stops overexposed compared to what auto metering would give.

I still don't understand the implementation of the 20mp sensor on this camera. Almost nobody is going to be interested in this camera for stills so why not go with the lower res sensor from the GH5s and BGH1 and get the better dynamic range and sensor readout for video.
Maybe they will bring one GH6S in the future. I would love to see a bsi, stacked, dual iso with 12mp.
Hi, congratulations on your interesting video. I am an unfortunate owner of GH5. I would like improved continuous autofocus. Looking at the clips I cannot understand how much the GH II has improved the AF. Can you tell me if I replace the GH5 with the GH5 II can I really get an improvement in the continuous AF? How much has this newer GH5 improved? Thanks for your advice.
A lot, and shoot in the higher frame rates because the Auto Focus is really good at 30fps and 60fps
Honestly its a good 'new' camera for the people getting into the video scene. Current gh5 users should definitely wait for gh6 though.
3:47 nope, the GH5S cannot shoot in 4k 60p 10 bit internally, it's the same as the GH5 in that regard.

I'm kind of curious now as to whether to go with the G9... Or a GH5 II. Don't get me wrong, I do like my G85, but it just doesn't cut it for longer exposures, as it doesn't take long to go from hot pixels to "bowl of skittles".

Luca - you can't confirm what doesn't exist. There's a very good chance an Oly EM1 MII has better AF then either the GH5II or GH6. Why in the world a company would produce a camera aimed at smaller production companies would continue to no use phase detect is as weird as it gets.
@@chrisklugh I disagree completely along with other amateur and professionals. Sony and Canon, even Nikon and Fuji, Oly are Kings and Queens of Auto Focus. We run and gun we know.
How about HDMI output lag in GH5 II ?
Don't hope for a raw output for the gh5 mk2. They made a whole new camera for couple of more features and other just UI related. They have to differentiate someway with the gh6

Hey guys thank for the reviews...im dancing between the gh6 which is out of my budget and overkill for my projects but screw it... its nice to have... and the the gh5 ii which covers all my needs or so i think. The major reason i am hesitatnt about the gh5 ii is whether or not it over heats... i record 4 - 6 hours at a time without stopping and i am more confident that the gh6 will hold up but not so sure about the gh5... will it overheat at 4- 6 hours in 4k 30fps?
The GH5M2 never overheats. You can run it all day and it'll be fine.

The product developer in me says reinvent the camera. No back lcd, no viewfinder. Henceforth a separate device on a cord you put on your head in front of one or two eyes. Place the camera anywhere and control from the comfort of your electric sofa as you look for that perfect shot.
The camera body is stripped of all buttons as everything goes on to a handheld device, or a full body suit. Bring a six axis robot arm placing the camera precisely right. Your private chauffeur who is a rental from the scenic service provider loads on and off from the eighteen wheeler. For you are worth it it
AF misses when he says "how much better is the AF" and again when he says "it's not something I'd rely on 100% of the time". Yeah, we see that, lol

I am thinking about getting the gh5 II or the gh5s but for Video the specs seem really similar except that the gh5s has raw output through hdmi and better lowlight performance (the gh5s has no I.S. but i would use a gimbal for handheld). So whats really the difference between the gh5 II and the Gh5s?
