    Nice video, but you missed two important things. You should have drilled a drain hole in the water manifold to the cavity between the seal and armature bearing. This would allow coolant to drain outside the motor when the seal fails again… and it will fail again. Secondly the bearing damage in the gearbox is from current drain that occurs when the motor fills with coolant. The currant has no place to go except through the gearbox and out the half shafts to ground.

    First of all a big thank you for sharing your knowledge. Would you change seals and bearings periodically say every 200.000km? I have heard about a drain hole to detect leakage before the coolant does damage. Did you get all the required parts from Tesla?? Im in Australia with a 2013 Model S P85+ signature with 380.000km and we dont have a Tesla 3rd party workshop (I know of). And I want to keep the car, it is just great.

    I have a TMS 85D 2015 Model, On letting go of the gas pedal there is a "mechanic" noise mostly in lower speeds (below 70km/ hr). When I accelerate slowly or faster theres is no noise. Neither is there any noise on maintaining a speed. Noise appears only when letting go of the gas pedal. Is this coming from the gear box (needs a refill of oil) or is there something more sinister going on inside the drive unit? (water ingress/ ball bearings etc?) Happy to get any tip, but I realise these questions are difficult to answer..

      I have a clunk noise similiar to what you describe. 2013 MS S85 rear wheel drive. Tesla mechanic did an inspection and said the front motor bushing is torn/cracked. This would explain the noise, however, he quoted me a $7000 repair cost to simply replace the entire drive unit as I don't think they will do just a bushing replacement. This seems outrageous. As a bushing replacement could be done with just a few hours of labor and the right tools.

      you will get with that just bearing overheat and total motor failure below 70k miles. That doesnt work longterm, it is bandaid solution. Every motor without rotor cooling suffers premature rotor bearing failire because of overheat, smae thing what we see on renault, kia, hyundai electric motors. And btw Tesla LDU is much heavier and strogner than those small ones. In germany where they drive 180kmh this would hold just 10k km. I've worked on electric motors for years. This repair is very easy. The seals are like $30 at most. Bearings can cost about $400 for really nice SKF type stuff. People are afraid of anything new to them. Got noise, replace the whole motor - $7000. A bunch of crap! All you need to do is what was done in this video. Rebuild the motor. You rebuild engines for more than this, and they're much more complicated and time consuming to do by comparison.
      As far as batteries go, they're not cheap but they don't always require replacement either. There are many scenarios where the battery can also be repaired at a fraction of Tesla's full replacement cost. And you can get credit for your old working modules. You just have to find a knowledgeable shop to do it. 95% are getting normal battery life which can last up to 350-400k miles. I get so sick of these people with this old horse and buggy mentality. There's more that's right than wrong with an electric car. And they are cheaper and easier to maintain if you have some know how.

    • @JetFire9
      @JetFire9 Рік тому

      @@shwndh Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I think it's important that anyone that reads your comment knows that, with all due respect, you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. First, for you to suggest that all the problems with EV's are bearings is ridiculous. I have a 2023, and they don't have the leaky seal issue of the early Model S that causes bearing failure. My failure is a common one, and it is due to electrical failures that the average home mechanic has no hope of fixing like they could a coil pack, an alternator, a water pump, etc on a regular car engine. The whole drive unit has to be dropped from the bottom of the car which requires a lift for the car. Almost no one has one of those at home. Gone are the days of fixing motor issues yourself in your driveway. It requires special computer equipment that Tesla has not released to customers. They released a watered down version of their computer, but it won't give you what you need to fix these drive unit issues. Tesla charges $7K for a replacement drive unit, and the 3rd parties that work on Tesla's charge $7K for rebuilding your drive unit. So just shut up for once with your silly lies. And if part of your battery goes bad, fixing it is like opening up a light bulb to weld back the filament. In other words, it's stupid. If some of the battery cells are failing due to age, then the others are not far behind. Why would you spend $5-6K to repair a battery that will keep having more $5-6K failures over and over instead of buying a new $15-20K battery? The batteries don't care about miles, they care about time. Batteries are expected to last 10-15 years, so you would have to be an idiot to do that. The average age of a car today is 12 years old. In other words, almost all EV's will need a new $15-20K battery in their lifetime. Just stop replying to EV posts please because you are clueless. Have a good day.
