- I learned this old-fashioned recipe recently. I wish I had known it all my life!
By the way, don't skip the most important step when it comes to making home-ground "real" grits.
Ingredients:
1 cup Yellow Grits (Old Fashioned or Original)
1 cup Sweet Corn or canned whole kernel corn
2 cups Chicken Broth
1-½ cup Heavy Cream
¼ stick Butter (I said 1/4 cup in the video, sorry)
Directions:
1. Cook 1 cup of drained canned whole kernel corn in butter in a cast-iron skillet until slightly browned.
2. In a small 2-quart pot bring chicken broth to a boil.
3. Add heavy cream and return to a boil.
4. Slowly whisk in the grits and then the corn.
5. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring often.
6. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Thanks for stoppin' by!
This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! I grind my own cornmeal too and I'm and also a fellow grits fanatic. Unfortunately I wasn't exactly sure how to prepare them from my grinds, so I usually just run them back through the grinder after sifting from the meal. I'm definitely going to save some now and try this. This is one of the many reasons I immediately subscribed after watching your videos. You do a lot of things the same way my grandparents used to and that knowledge is hard to find these days. Many of the self-proclaimed "Homestead" channels don't even know this stuff. You are an absolute gem and a great example of why some of the best knowledge isn't always found in books.
Thanks so much, D_Zanzer! You are too kind. My parents knew everything about growing food and cooking everything from scratch. I often wish I has listened to them more than I did. And welcome to the channel!
For me Grits are not done until it can hold a spoon upright for 2 -4 seconds and too the tooth tender. I add butter and shredded mild cheddar cheese to mine with some crispy fresh bacon bits on top.
They looked soo creamy and delicious! Even if I don't make the Grits, I will at least brown some canned Corn, in my cast iron skillet. You have inspired me once again, Anne! Have a great day! 🌽💖
Thanks, Leanne! And you too!
Thank you for sharing! I will have to try with store bought.
It will be good with store bought too. And most of us don't have access to home grown and freshly ground. I'm just lucky to have gotten these.
Yummy
So neat how they turn white after cooking. Grits are so delicious
Looks delicious! I want some of those seeds.
Ma'am, this is an authentic Southern recipe and worthy of passing on to newer generations. Wow! Thank you so much for kindly sharing your traditional recipe. 🌽🌽🌽💛💛💛
You are most welcome. Thanks!
When I went to a local farm today, the farmer had corn he'd ground all packaged up. It's beautiful and I needed to know how to prepare the grits. Thank you for this recipe.
That is awesome! And you're welcome
Thank you for sharing how to make this. I didn’t know about the pre-wash step! I’ll be using non GMO organic Dent Corn from Azure Standard. Fingers crossed. Love your kind n soft way of explaining things. Thank you. New subbie ❤
Thank you, Cyn4rest!
I luv grits
Me too, Fay. I eat them often.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
