Norwegian helicopter Induces a Rock Fall beside a Fjord
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 гру 2009
- A helicopter smacks down a rock off a cliff face to eliminate a rock fall hazard for the road below. The helicopter then displays its dominance of the Fjord by urinating all over the rock face. This is done to loosen and remove any remaining small rocks that may fail at another time and cream a volvo or saab on the road below.
The scaling occurred at Oppdølstranda on Nordmøre, Norway. Thanks to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for making this great video and sending it to me! - Наука та технологія
Can we just talk about how incredible this cameraman is at keeping the falling rocks in frame and focused the whole time.. wow
Wow so terribly hard to angle a camera downward and keep up with the rocks momentum
@@DagaChiefy Have you perhaps not used longer focal lengths than what cellphone cameras have? Keeping moving things in frame can be quite tricky indeed.

@@DagaChiefy I don't like ya cut

I know this is going to be a really dumb question... But why do they have to rinse the cliffside afterwards?
Is that to encourage smaller rubble that may have been knocked loose to fall? That just doesn't seem like it makes very much sense...

Trully amazing to see a rock that size caught by that fence. That was also some great flying. First time I've seen a chopper with a wrecking ball.
Same here mosher. What I thought was going to happen was the vibrations from the chopper would start the collapse. But what are they doing so close to a highway?
I was also impressed with the engineering, give that team a raise!

Basically a net made of 40cm dia 'key rings' that expand when the net is impacted

*British Documentary Voice* And here we see the native Norwegians playing the country's most elaborate sport "Spinny blade - Heavy Ball" that has been a tradition for the people of Norway since the dawn of time.
I'm curious as to how someone actually noticed that piece of rock was unstable.
Because the Norwegian Rangers are doing their jobs. And not just them, also everybody else, as simple tourist, geologist, nature wanderer, bird lover or even a humble tree hugger, you report your observation and the authorities takes measures.
Otto Weber i wish there were people like this in my country, what they are doing there is outstanding
The eagle flying by reported to the geology center...
It usually begins with lesser rocks falling down on the road beneath, which leads to measures. Personally I think this would have been a job for an artillery piece, even a Bofors anti-aircraft gun could have done the job efficiently! :)
jan using high velocity impacts is not the best idea. This results in long ranging shockwaves, potentially weakening more material.
Those are some impressive catch nets to hold that much weight. Seen how easy a 18wheeler rolls through a guard rail?
Guardrails aren't instantly meant to stop you
Norwegian engineers don't do things half-arsed.... :)
Nobody wants that, and nobody with any respect for their profession or other people would consider that.
There's about 2600 dams in Norway as well. Haven't heard about any accidents yet... must be minor if any at all.
@@SebHaarfagre It's weird.... It's almost as if having strong regulations prevents people from cutting costs at the expense of people's safety... Who would have thought
_cries in crumbling American infrastructure_
The nets are super neat! They're like a chainmail made out of steel wire, so super flexible and strong because they distribute the weight so well!
This road is closed now and the nets are gone.
The funny thing about these recommended videos, is that no matter what the content is, they will always get a huge lot of views. Then probably the algorithm will think "Oh look, a video I recommended got lots of views, lets recommend something similar but not too similar now".
And that is how you end up watching videos from 10 years ago, wich have nothing to do with your video interests.
True. Lol
It's one of YT most annoying algorithm - sometimes i watch from another browser where I have not created a profile (although even that is had to do these days... just log into your gmail or hotmail once from that device and they have you pinned - very annoying)
That pilot is superb. Accuracy beyond belief when the weight is hanging 200 feet below your airborne platform. When doe s he ever get a chance to practice that shit, much less do it for real as in this video - superb airman ship !
By installing and maintaining the electricity grid across the mountains and Fjords. All the time.

A long tunnel have now been built past this area. The road you see in the video is now closed for all traffic. I drove through the tunnel just a couple of weeks ago. During my childhood we drove a lot on this road. Sometimes it was closed because of rock fall or avalanches. It is risky driving along Norwegian fjords during heavy rain showers because of the unstable hillsides.
That-was-AWESOME! Absolutely the most impressive clip I have seen in quite awhile. Just the fact that the authorities there in Norway had the forethought to take the needed action to not only knock the loose slab of rock down but then to make certain the cliff face was not holding onto any semi-loose rocks they went ahead and washed the rest down with water that probably was the equivalent of a years worth of rain/runoff. Very cool!

If this was in Portugal, we would creat a comitee to study what could be done. First the comitee should choose it s members, usually from the political party in power. Than, the comitee would spend a few million years in studies for some years, but all the studies would need a post-check from a previously created comitee. Than some would start wondering why this comitee was working for so many years, spending public Money and would start taking legal actions. The comitee would break, it s members would move along to other comitees or back in politics and everyone would forget about it. Than the rocks would finally colapse and kill someone. This would be on the news for a month and we would reach the conclusion that it was actually nobody s fault and although something could have been done to prevent it we should just hope it wont happen again and pray to God.
A little more or less, this scenario is similar to what happens in India.
Same is the case in India or it wouldn't have been noticed at all in first place.
In Brasil they would build a scaffold and use whatever pieces as iron are about to start banging and prying on the rock. When it collapses and kills most of the workers, it becomes the lead story after the political news and is soon forgotten.
That's pretty much the rest of the world pal, they're all corrupt because if they was all good, then everyone would be agreeing getting along and everyone would be having just wonderful lives living free from corruption control and terror
same on spain x""DDD
Wouldn't it be cheaper to hire a few trolls with hammers to climb the up mountain ?
I heard they're very common in Norway.
Trolls don't work for free mate. Greedy bastards.
First of all, who do you think made the rocks loose in the first place?
Second, they only accept porridge as payment, and the amounts they demand are too big to cook up!
trespire yeah i kinda agree. Mountain trolls would have been perfect for that. Unfortunately with the modern overy politically correct laws of norway, it became racist to hire them just for that.
No trolls left in Norway, they all moved to social media.
This rock is actually a troll!
They turn into stone as soon as the sun shines on them.
This one forgot to hide in time, as the sun is almost always hidden behind a thick layer of cloud.
This is low key one of the coolest videos I've seen on UA-cam in a while. The Norwegians' ingenuity is highly respectable.

damn Norway is so beautiful.
The description mentions concerns of "small rocks that may fail at another time and cream a Volvo or Saab on the road below." A large rock could probably smash a Saab, but for a Volvo if the entire mountain came down on top of it, it would be a nuisance as the driver would have to wait a while for the rescue crews to dig him out before he could resume his journey in his turbo brick. Might need to get some scratches in the paint fixed, that would also be a minor nuisance. We can't let that sort of hassle happen!
Great video though, first time I've ever seen a helicopter with a wrecking ball - great idea.
This is a perfect example of a video not needing added music.
