I hope I can ensure it lives up to those kind props! It has a long way to go yet. Repotting video / major trunk reduction should be edited soon from this spring!
Hey! I started my bonsai adventure about 4 months ago. I am so glad I found your page. I am from West Michigan, so it's pretty nice to watch someone work in an identical climate. Thanks for your videos and looking forward to more!
Beautiful tree and helpful video! Keep em comin! I just purchased a dawn redwood of similar size. Nervous and excited to make a few big cuts that are needed.
I love dawn redwoods. I have one growing in my yard that I took a million cuttings from and have a couple air layerings going on. We’ll see if I can squeeze a bonsai out of that thing yet. What’s the history on yours? How long have you owned it? It’s stunning. Cheers and welcome back.
I’ve had it for a couple of years. When I got it, was just a stump that the previous owners had cut back. Bought at Michigan state bonsai show at Frederick meijer gardens. Great trees! How have you gone about taking cuttings? Success with air layers? I may need to try this year if you’re getting them to take...
Great Lakes Bonsai last years air layers failed almost immediately, but this years are still green and growing so I’m hopeful. The cuttings are also going surprisingly well, considering they were all from hardwood. I’ll make a bad quality video showing all of this soon.
Boston Bonsai Idiot subscribed! I have some going in water from something I saw on bonsaiNut... no roots showing yet. Hardwoods are the ones I’ve seen take so far too!
Thanks Matthew, will at minimum update the dawn redwood yearly, and have a forest planting for next year as well. May post a coastal redwood repot also!
I think you’re spot on - it leans away from the viewer as you move up that deadwood. Will do for next repot. Cheers, thanks for watching and the feedback!
Dawn Redwood are hardy zones 5-8. Here in southern Michigan we are 5b or 6a zones. I’d suggest googling your USDA hardiness zone and checking, but yes. Very hardy, we have below zero (f) temps here in winter. Insulated on the ground with some mulch, you’ll have zero problems!! Go for it.
Wow I’m jealous of your trees! I’ve been getting into bonsai over the last year, and jut came across your channel. Instead sub! I got a Dawn Redwood from Brussels and want to thicken it up and let it grow and develop. What soil mixture would you recommend to let it grow in for a few years, before transferring it into a bonsai pot, with bonsai soil?
Hey RF - thanks for the sub and watching! Depends on your climate. I’m in 6a and with full bonsai soil, my dawns struggle and need at least water every day when temps get over 85 degrees F. I have now moved to half organic soil (peat based, I used Fertilome ultimate mix) and half something bonsai soil related for some air pockets. Having some organic in there keeps their feet nice and moist still. You could even go full organic depending on climate and watering schedule! Good luck!!
I just received one of these redwoods. I live in the tip of the mitt and wondering what you’d suggest for overwintering this tree. I was thinking my basement as it gets so cold here. I am also pretty concerned as I received it root bound in the pot and I fear it needs repotted and it’s late in the season.
Hey Colby. I place my Dawn redwoods on the ground, outside, huddled up with my other trees with leaves mulched up to the first branch. Your Dawn will have no issues outside assuming you place on the ground and mulch. They are very hardy! I would strongly advise against repotting now- the tree would lose some of its winter hardiness if you messed with the roots now. Wait until spring when the buds are starting to swell and repot then. Good luck and thanks for watching!! I also have a winter protection video if that is helpful that shows my setup for winter ua-cam.com/video/3cKiyd0abik/v-deo.html
Welcome back. Great tour of your benches. Beautiful material. Everything, including you, looking healthy and happy. Thanks
Thanks so much!
Certainly the best Dawn Redwood I've seen on UA-cam so far. Stunning tree!

Nice tree, would've loved to see some of the actual root work though!
Next time I promise! Didn’t want the video to run too long!
Nice video. Thank you for sharing, Steve
Thanks for watching Steve!
I'm a new subscriber today -- and already loving this content. I like your natural looking bonsai technique, that redwood is gorgeous.
Thanks for watching Robert! Should gradually have better material as time goes on, the redwood is definitely my best right now.

Hey Michael! Thanks for watching. Good luck on the journey, we have plenty of trees that work well in west Michigan! Definitely more to come!
Beautiful tree!!

Gday from Australia! Great tree mate. I would till the front towards you to to create depth.

nice redwood 👍
Nice tree! Thinking of buying one myself. I know they go dormant during winter, but can they take very cold winters and freezing temperatures? Thanks

Same as here then. I will go for it! Thank you very much for the info!
You look like Justin Gaethje..just sayin'. :) Great video. I'm new to Dawns..hoping mine don't die during the winter.
Hope they survived! :)

Why don't you do a video on how you graft those baby Dawn redwoods onto your tree
Are you thinking a step by step? I did reference/show the end product last year. I’m up for it!
