  • When Cam and I first moved here this tree was just a little sapling and I didn’t think much of it at the time. Now that she’s grown so large so fast these last few years, I did a little learning and I’m stoked about what I’ve discovered!!

I planted a Dawn Redwood about 50 years ago. It is about 95 feet high now! In Lancaster, PA!

Loved the video! This is my favorite tree. I planted one in my back yard 20 years ago. I still go out there and just stare at it.

I recently planted out 5 dawn redwoods I grew from seed (collected in city parks). Hoping they get huge in my lifetime !

A fine tree to grow for sure. I think I would call them ‘obscure’ as opposed to ‘rare’ these days. Most good garden centers will carry them in areas where they are hardy. That was not the case in the 80s when I started in the business. I love everything in that family and grow all of them now. Even though I do not grow the straight species, I do have two ‘Urban Spire’ which are very upright and narrow ( narrower) and one ‘Ogon’ which has bright yellow foliage that shines like beacon against the red bark. A truly magnificent sight

I was about to cry when you hugged the tree. I’m not sure why, but this video made me feel quite emotional.
I’ve been binge watching any dawn redwood videos I can find.
I planted two dawn redwoods in my yard this year after a developer cut down the surrounding forest and built 3 extremely expensive houses there, only leaving a somewhat thin tree line that is bordering my property.
It is quite sad to see the destruction, but I have been trying to bring back as much of the natural wilderness that I can haha
Can’t wait till’ these trees get much larger.
Also, I just adore their colours in the fall.

I love planting trees, and my wife says I live to populate the world with more trees, mostly because they glorify our creator and bring us needed shade and home for wildlife. I've lost some very big, beautiful trees in my yard to abnormal cold (Palms), lightning strikes (Pine trees) wind storms (oak trees); and even the county which is widening our storm drains and considered our 150 yr old loblolly pine in the way and sawed it down, but trees have no soul, therefore I would never consider "hugging" a tree. Hugging my grandkids, my wife, my kids and other friends and family members yes. But that's just me. One another note, I planted a small dawn redwood in the mountains of Serbia where we just bought a weekend home. I'm planning on planting some giant redwoods, cypress and cedar trees when I get there next month.

I just purchased 5 dawn redwood saplings that are about 6 inches tall. I have them potted and protected. Hopefully in the next 2 or 3 years I'll plant them in their forever spot and a couple more years after that, they'll be like this one

The municipality came and massacred the property next to mine, simply because I made a request to buy it (to save the trees). But they decided that they need to "clean" the property before selling it to me.... "Cleaning" to them, meant cutting down all the trees that I wanted to save - taking what they can use as fire-wood, and leaving the rest where it fell.
Shortly thereafter I discovered two of these being sold in the same bin as the rose bushes at my local hardware store (in Eastern Europe). I planted one at each end of the property that was massacred about two months ago - to fill in the tremendous gaps that were created by the mindless bureaucrats' senseless destruction - and to honor all the trees that were senselessly killed because of their absolute soulless stupidity.
The trees are still babies, but they have doubled in size since I planted them (they are almost knee-high). I may not be around to see them reach their full height. But I am happy that I get to watch them grow - and to honor all the others that were cut down and destroyed.

I’m no tree expert but I’m pretty good at guessing numbers, so I’m gonna guess that it’s around 20 years old, maybe a bit less :)

@Abby UnEarthed, you posted this video about a year ago. How big has it gotten since then?

how do they know the trees were abundant I think its just the areas they grew were easy to fossilize plants in a watery low oxygen environment compared to say a tree that died in a oak forest where its mostly dry and they turned into soil or dust

It grew up into Baffin Island and the Ice age pushed it down and caused its extinction in North America.
