Very cool Matt, having grown up in Whitestone we were always out in the river or on the shore. Love your videos, its awesome to see the sights from the water!
You are your own stunt double out there on the east river. Good job keeping upright with those big waves. Quite a contrast to see how the green of Brooklyn gives way to the concrete jungle of the city. Those ferries were moving along a lot faster than I anticipated. I did the circle line tour once, it was not half as fast as those ferries.

That was interesting. I slept in my van many times, especially when taking long road trips. I just needed a place to stop and catch some Zzzz's before proceeding. It could be an RV campground, a rest area or even a Walmart parking lot. I wasn't looking to live in it. Still, for a few nights it was fine and comfortable. I think with housing costs so high in NYC, there is probably many looking for an affordable way to live. Like full time in a mini RV. That was probably an option for some. Then when more find out about it, and park their little van houses there, it gets the attention of locals and law enforcement. Most likely to not have these vehicles parked long term or permanently. I've been on powerboats in the East River a few times. They ranged from 25 feet to 36 feet. The currents can be strong, especially around the bridge pilings, but the boats power through it no problem. On a day like when you were paddling on the river, it's a smooth ride regardless of which direction you are going. But during some events, or holiday weekends especially, there is insane boat traffic. There's huge wakes combined with current that can make for a very wild ride. The bigger the better when it's like that. I never paddled on the East River, Harlem river or the Hudson. Glad you have a beach available to you just in case. That’s a busy commercial traffic waterway. And it’s narrow to make the wakes worse. You did good man. Head on is the way. Wicked loud trains. Awesome kayaking like no other. Very rough water though.

So so so awesome., another one of my stomping grounds from the 70s and 80s, I use to work in Williamsburg, and bushwick, and St George, SI, then pick up my friend after work at the navy yard. The city was giving grants to the middle class city dwellers to buy the old late 1800s to early 1900s old Victorians and brownstone houses for $50-125k because they were in some bad neighborhoods back then, look at them now,it really looks a lot cleaner, even that run down area is still way better than it was back then. There would have been different gangs everywhere. I use to travel everywhere that you have been so far, hunts point, up to mt St Vincent’s over to Brooklyn college to great kills, lemon creek over to the kill van kill, up the palisades, forest hills and Astoria park, flushing meadows and flushing bay. So many waterways there., and to think me and my friends thought nothing of swimming in those waters back then. Nice to see you doing such a good thing with your camera and not to mention that griddle, honestly didn’t know if you could eat that entire quesadilla. Oh and those break waves, bro we use to go crazy when a giant oil tanker full would come by, it would suck us out to the bay and then flush us back in., so much (crazy insane) fun for a teenager. You definitely have a quality kayak to handle them waves! Keep rocking the boat, love it ❤
Wow, thank you so much for this amazing comment. I actually only ate 1/2 the quesadilla. I gave the rest away and made more for other van folks in the area. We all had a mini feast. It was necessary meeting some people who frequent the area. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Great video! :) The wakes looked pretty fun to kayak through. I know how the camera never does them justice but I know they were big. The rented van was a great idea, total stealth (when closed up) especially with the black paper on the windows. Dinner looked delicious too :)
Wow just came upon your videos here. You may not remember me but we use to work at that really crappy place in Tampa called CTL. Good to see your alive and well and doing your thing!
You drove right by my old apt on N 11th St! The East River seems super gnarly to paddle on. Between the ferries and the currents, you're a brave man. There is a tiny island called Belmont Island just south of Roosevelt Island that I watched a video of a dude camping on the other day. I certainly wouldn't do that but might be a fun challenge for you haha Im also a member at Vital. It rules.
Love your videos! Been subscribed for a few weeks now , I will say that I love the calm , asmr style , there were some parts in this video where overlayed music kinda ruined that feel and made me fast forward scenery I really wanted to soak in
@RigSquad Thank you! I try not to overdo the music. Mostly, I add music at the beginning and end. Some people like it, some don't. I appreciate you hanging in there. I always try to keep them low-key, scenic, and nature inspired even in the urban environment. Thanks again!! 😀

Quesadilla, yummm! Van life looks so intriguing I follow some van lifers on UA-cam, very cool That pier at the end looks like a nice spot to camp and cook but I don't know how safe it would be to sleep there overnight, awesome views Oh man I would have definitely recommended Kellogg's diner on Metropolitan Ave since you were looking for breakfast in Williamsburg!!!
My heart skipping a beat watching this part. I can’t even float. Operating these trains i never realized how loud it was under the bridge. We didn’t get an that noise in the train cab.
Great video again! Congrats on your 10k subs, well deserved. That Egg sandwich you got at the end looked incredible, would be hard to find anything that decent over here! Have a great week!
@OGJeff685 I bet the heat is super challenging living on a boat down there. I stayed on a boat that was an Airbnb in Florida a few years ago. There was AC, so it was nice. I'm sure it has its challenges being full time. Thank you for watching from Florida.
Hi Matt Just found your site today. I bike in the boroughs frequently starting from Astoria Park. You get views of the city that are spectacular. As a matter of fact I was on one of my bike tours and picked up the NYC Ferry at the 90th st dock. Took the ferry all the way to Wall St dock. Views going under the 59th st bridge, Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge were incredible. I also viewed your N Brother I. Vid. Are you familiar with the General Slocun maritime disaster? Keep the vids coming. Love ‘em!

Great video. I don’t think I can ever do a “van life” in the city. It feels like I’d never get any peace and quiet. Also the bathroom situation, yikes haha. At least in the woods you can poop outside the van! Edit: I think going eastwards to montauk would be a great place to film. Check out Camp Hero (stranger things inspiration) and you can kayak montauk!
@@LazyBushcrafters Thank you. I appreciate you watching and commenting. This was temporary van life but a fun experience. 😄 Yes, it would be tough in the city. I love Montauk. I go driving on the outer beach out there occasionally.
Matt, amazing first exit off the Kosciusko br. used to be empty 20 + years ago, now 18 out of 24 hrs is traffic. show how much development & populations boom there since city re-zone from industrial Williamsburg. I live behind the left of the 2 brown 21 story buildings where the ferry boat just passed 16:48 & in the 80's the beige square building next to it behind the white short Sanitation building on the docks. 27:04 Your cooking should be another NYC R.V cooking class video? LOL. 30:20 They are their own enemy - if they like to stay - should be low key & clean up better than average street. other wise time is not on their side sooner or later. Great video again - I'm sure some will copy your trip to stay.🍺🍺🍺
Digging your channel, you have an interesting concept going here. And you can take this nationwide. Hopefully uhaul doesn't ban you for life for camping in their van, as they have done to others. I would not paddle the East River. Too much commercial traffic for me. You seem to be enjoying it lol.
@TheRealChetManley I returned the U-haul in the same condition I received it, so I don't think there's a way they would know that I camped in it. Probably less wear on it than if I filled it up with furniture, etc. They made money on the rental like any other. 😄 Yeah, the East River is no fun. I like more colm lesser traveled waterways for sure. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
@TwoFeetOutdoors the only know if someone sees the video. This is how Steve got banned lol. Keep making videos bro, I think this could be a big channel for you one. This is neat stuff.
Very choppy on the river, another enjoyable film.the skyline looked great, one question if anyone can answer, downtown skyscraper's then lower buildings till midtown.any reason.all the best from England.

I actually gave my leftovers away and made more quesadillas for other van folks that were over there. It was cool meeting some of the people that frequent Van Alley. I didn't film them, though.
Matt keep doing these fun and crazy adventures! That area of Brooklyn is very busy.. it's tough to van life in New York bc it's hard to keep a vehicle legally parked for more than 2 or 3 days at most and that's if you're lucky to get a street cleaning spot.
Brother you’re good at this man. God bless. What Camara you use that follows you all over the place? lol goes back to you then front again without you touching nothing! NICE!!!
Thank you so much!! My camera is an Insta360X3 camera (it records 360⁰ around) and afterward, with editing, I can rotate the camera for the angles I want. It's really cool. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
That van life is starting to look more and more the way to go , ability to wake up somewhere new everyday . Williamsburg is my stomping ground born and raised . That entire waterfront was abandoned warehouses and not a soul would be out there it was a very quiet neighborhood. Now it’s just noise .
I really enjoy the idea of many alternative lifestyles, and it's fun trying them out. Surprisingly, it was very quiet sleeping at Van Alley. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Awesome video Matt !!! A lot of cool stuff to see in it, and the giant fajita casadia looked good. That paddle was NARLEY, good thing you didn't get schwacted by a Ferry full of tourists. The East River seems like a good place for the mentally unstable like ex-Marines or Grunts to go Kayaking, lol
Thank you. New ideas. New adventures. Something different and fun. Pretty cool perspective seeing the skyline, bridges, and Williamsburg. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Cool adventure. I would have never picked that area to park and sleep. Too busy of a neighborhood. Next time find something more stealthy. But still fun. You should have looked for a Bodega. Nice bacon egg and cheese NYC style 😊
Van Alley was fun! I met some nice people. Talked for a while. I circled around and took advantage of the parking spot neat the Dunkin' Donuts. Kept it simple and easy. Stuck with what I knew. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. BTW, sleeping overnight was very quiet.
Oh man I've been waiting for this video! Jesus my pulse is jumping seeing those waves!! Lord! You have cojones!!😂 Glad you said you're having fun but damn right that's sketchy! Man I don't miss driving around looking for parking, that's not only in Williamsburg that's everywhere in Brooklyn 😂😂 Glad I have a private spot I pay for Glad you're deciding not to paddle back and just find somewhere to pull out and Uber back, those ferries are treacherous man!! Oh yeah we can hear the train! Pull out at the beach, forget the 2 bridges my heart can't take it 🫣😱

We use it on the outer beaches of Long Island so that we have a toilet nearby. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
😄you chose a more sketchy area to sleep among the many stealthy places in Brooklyn, but i love this! I know a nice stealthy place in Queens with much greenery if you ever need to know.
The East River gets really choppy with the wind and currents, I have taken the NYC Ferry on the East River and the boat bobs up and down (especially when it stops at a dock to let passengers off) and I get a little sea sick on it. It just does not look that bad until you get on it. I have walked over the Manhattan Bridge several times, the subway trains make extremely loud noises, it is unbelievably loud. Honestly, you freaked me out a little by saying you were starting "van life", I immediately became concerned. 1 minute later, you clarified, an LOL moment for me. I think it could be fun as a recreational vehicle. I don't like van life as housing, especially in New York. It is not safe, everyone is in your business in NY. And I am suspicious of anyone who lives in a van in New York. Sure, you could do it for a short time, but you will be noticed and there are people who will prey on that. Public parking spaces are highly valued.
I'm glad you got my humor about starting van life, then quickly realized I was just taking a fun van trip in the U-haul. Sometimes, I feel like I'm dry 🤣🤣🤣. Thank you for your in-depth comment. Thank you for watching. I really appreciate it.
Very brave to kayak the East River and stay at Van Alley!! But...picking Dunkin over Frankel's or nearby Peter Pan Donuts? Gotta go back and fix that food crime

@RigSquad It's a 360⁰ camera. In editing, I can move it around to wherever I want. It takes extra work, but you can shoot and edit later. Do you carry a strobe light? How about one of those inflatable rescue flags? Might be a good idea seeing you have a black kayak, black hat, black shirt. You’re impossible to see if you’re ever in the water.
30:50 a man lives in that box. Somebody did an video of inside his box. Watched it about 2 weeks ago. Believe it was an young man in a blue van the had the UA-cam video. Could be wrong on him, but i did watch the video.
When the boat traffic wasn't sturring it up and making a washing machine out of it, it wasn't terrible. It definitely kept me on my toes though. Thank you for watching and commenting.
@RigSquad There's an entrance to the park back there out of sight. There were a couple of trash cans over there as well. Not exactly sure what he was doing. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Kicking myself. I wasn't familiar and didn't even know about Peter Pan. I got excited because of easy parking and went with what I knew. Ugh. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
That "van alley" used to be a dangerous area, all real New Yorkers avoid the neighborhood. Now it's gotten too well known and the foot traffic in the area had increased, also thanks to the gentrification of Williamsburg. But even then... some UA-camrs got harassed while filming in the alley. It's really a gamble if you want to stay at the van alley for the beautiful view.
A friend who was in the area said that more notices were put out yesterday. This time, by the parks department. Apparently, the large white and blue warehouse next to van alley is being torn down soon, and I believe they are incorporating the land to Bushwick Inlet Park, making more waterfront park land. I've just heard of van alley and wanted to see it for myself and share my experience with others. It was a fun experience. Overall, currently, Williamsburg seems to be a pretty safe community. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the compliment. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Here's an article from 2022 on van alley in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. www.curbed.com/2022/08/van-alley-williamsburg-brooklyn-photo.html
Matt. Holey moley. You kayaked in the East River
Yes, it's totally not my favorite spot to paddle. I like it a but more serene with urban views and some nature vibes thrown in. 👌 Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Matt you are creating some great memories from your adventures and learning useful skills that will serve you well throughout your life.
Never stop exploring.

I watched a Lamont at Large livestream today and he says Canadian geese also. Another great video up there.
@lipdavis13 Yes, at the end of the day, I don't see the difference. Same thing. Live life and enjoy nature, right?! Thank you for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors semantics right? Maybe? Idk? They are fun watch in the springtime.
@@lipdavis13 Exactly.
Boat traffic aside. Looks like you have wind against current. Always makes for a rough ride. Much respect 👍
Thank you so much. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
$19.99 is not too bad for a room for the night in NYC!!
@TallyESports So true!! A bit extra for mileage and insurance, but you are 100% correct. Cheapest waterfront room in NYC. Bring your own amenities. 😀🌮🛶🚚
24 hour gym is unbelievably cool
Looked really cool. I even looked at their website.
Glad you have a beach available to you just in case.
That’s a busy commercial traffic waterway.
And it’s narrow to make the wakes worse.
You did good man.
Head on is the way.
Wicked loud trains.
Awesome kayaking like no other.
Very rough water though.
Thank you so much. I appreciate this comment. Thank you for watching.
Legitimate parking!
Hahaha!
Any reason for a ticket.
It’s really up to whom ever is writing tickets that day I’ve found.
I usually have pretty good luck parking in Williamsburg. I did get a $115 ticket last month. 🙃😒🙄
That waterfront area at 33 minutes is awesome.
Yes, such a beautiful spot for sure.
You should try a breakfast sandwich from a bodega next time.
@detrate I jumped the gun because I saw parking. I just went with what I knew. You're 100% right, though. ✅️🎯 Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
This just made my day Better!
Thank you!! Makes me happy to hear that! 😀 I appreciate you watching and commenting. 😀😁🤣
Great video! :) The wakes looked pretty fun to kayak through. I know how the camera never does them justice but I know they were big.
The rented van was a great idea, total stealth (when closed up) especially with the black paper on the windows. Dinner looked delicious too :)
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Wow just came upon your videos here. You may not remember me but we use to work at that really crappy place in Tampa called CTL. Good to see your alive and well and doing your thing!

Thanks Two Feet that was spectacular and fun to see and hear the sounds from New York City dinner looked delicious
👣 You're welcome! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
You drove right by my old apt on N 11th St! The East River seems super gnarly to paddle on. Between the ferries and the currents, you're a brave man. There is a tiny island called Belmont Island just south of Roosevelt Island that I watched a video of a dude camping on the other day. I certainly wouldn't do that but might be a fun challenge for you haha
Im also a member at Vital.

That was fun to watch! Also congratulation for reaching 10k subs! You deserve more!

Great video, those waves were rough man. The chicken quesadilla in the van looked awesome you definitely earned those calories bro out in that water.
That's a pretty cool spot just has a few sketchy areas, too bad people don't clean up after themselves.

I live in a boat. it's the same annoyances but a little bit cooler than a van
@@OGJeff685 That's awesome! Do you live in a boat in NYC?
@@TwoFeetOutdoors nah, down in the Keys ;) It's actually the cheapest way to live. However as you pointed out in the video, it has its challenges..
@OGJeff685 I bet the heat is super challenging living on a boat down there. I stayed on a boat that was an Airbnb in Florida a few years ago. There was AC, so it was nice. I'm sure it has its challenges being full time. Thank you for watching from Florida.
Hi Matt
Just found your site today. Love ‘em!
Welcome to Two Feet Outdoors. Thank you for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. Here's a recent video I did kayaking to and exploring North Brother Island. ua-cam.com/video/qha_AxLMHNM/v-deo.htmlsi=ojauTbs-hHKCcSCI

Matt keep doing these fun and crazy adventures! That area of Brooklyn is very busy.. it's tough to van life in New York bc it's hard to keep a vehicle legally parked for more than 2 or 3 days at most and that's if you're lucky to get a street cleaning spot.

That van life is starting to look more and more the way to go , ability to wake up somewhere new everyday . Williamsburg is my stomping ground born and raised . That entire waterfront was abandoned warehouses and not a soul would be out there it was a very quiet neighborhood. Now it’s just noise .

😄you chose a more sketchy area to sleep among the many stealthy places in Brooklyn, but i love this! I know a nice stealthy place in Queens with much greenery if you ever need to know.
I did, but I really wanted to see what Van Alley was really about. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

How on earth to you get Dunkin when Peter Pan Donuts is up the block?
Van alley is kinda sad looking.
The forgotten?
I think some of the folks vacated the area because of the police notices. I met a bunch of people, though. It was cool.
