    Saving the old metal tanks if thickness is not compromised is staying true to being classic but if need be plastic is a great replacement

    Wow you did it the nice and easy and safe way. Mine had some rust in it..not a lot..but i wanted to clean it anyway. I took Pool Acid (Phosphoric) and dumped like 1/4 gallon of it in there with a link chain about 6 ft long and swished it around in there and left it overnight...dumped it out in a compost pile..and that thing was clean as a whistle!! I think id rather have done it your way..that pool acid is tough on the nose!! Great vid tho!! Thanks!

      Slades VW Beetle my 73 Super has done a lot of sitting over the last few years I think. Before I started my tear down flakes of rust where getting caught in my fuel filter, like a whole lot. I may have to end up replacing the tank in the end, I haven’t pulled it yet to look. Hoping I can save it though. 👍

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  4 роки тому +1

      Jonathan Farmer It honestly might be salvageable. I like to let the stuff sit for 24 hours although it says 2 to 4 hours. I have a video on here further down for cleaning your main fuel line out in the tunnel. You might want to take a look at that. Every little bit helps a lot

    Very informative! My '68 Ghia's tank has rust chunks in it. Is that too far gone? Should I just find a better tank?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 роки тому +1

      If there’s actual chunks, you can try putting some nuts and bolts in a tank or a big piece of chain and shaking it around to break everything loose and then rinse it out.
      But you Gotta make sure you don’t have a bunch of pinhole leaks everywhere.

    I appreciate this video as I am in the process of working on a 74 SB Convertible to getting it back on the road. Also, and I can't find any real answers to this, but is there an internal screen in the SB fuel tank bottom that can be accessed by a hex/allen key type plug and R&R'd with long needle nose pliers?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 роки тому

      Thank you for the kind comment and thank you for being here. I do believe on your gas tank there should be a screen in the bottom. When you remove the plug out of the bottom it will pull out.

    • @SladesVWBeetle

      Covered the holes and use zip ties to pull them very tight.

    Is there an alternative i can use to (evaporust) because its not available were I live. I read somewhere that the tank can be filled with Diesel and left for a day any thoughts on that?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому +1

      Actually many people use diesel, and often times, folks have used kerosene. Now something I did about four years ago. I used vinegar in a gas tank. I left it sit for about three days. And it truly worked.
