I live in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area and the cross border ties between the two counties have always been real strong here. They used to play here a lot, I think I saw them live six times and they were always great. I think one of the best things about them was that they were VERY Canadian, but I think that was also one of the reason they never really crossed over big in the States. I still can't get over how Amanda Marshall slips through everyone's fingers as a Canadian artist. She is phenomenal but seems to fly under the radar of Alanis, Shania and a few others.
I will always remember the Hip's last concert on 20 August 2016 from Kingston, Ontario (band's hometown). The concert was televised live (and free) across Canada. When they got to the part in "Grace Too" where Gord goes into that primal scream section, shouting "No" over and over, I felt his frustration and helplessness as he faced terminal brain cancer. I can only imagine what he was experiencing. But, true to this song's lyrics, he faced this heartbreaking fate "armed with will and determination and grace, too". R.I.P. Gord Downey. 🇨🇦
I watched it at home, and most of my neighbours did too...Most of us had our TVs facing the street, and we sat outside. Little to no traffic on the street, just Gordie saying "so long."
I am from Miami, which is as far from Canada as you can can get, but I love The Hip! I saw them in concert twice in the 1990s, once in Atlanta and once in Orlando.
When singer-writer of The Hip, Gord Downie, learned he had a terminal brain cancer tumour, he wanted to go on one last tour of Canada with his beloved friends in the band. They announced his condition and the tour. A couple of years ago, UA-cam was full of people reacting to the video of The Hip playing the final song of their final tour ever, in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. It was so emotional that a lot of reactors were crying, even though they had never before heard of the Tragically Hip. That last song was called "Ahead By a Century", in which Gord hopes that a hundred years hence, we (Canadians) would be better people, in a better country. Do yourselves a favour, if you have not already, and watch and react to "Ahead By a Century" live in Kingston. Beware that there is one video that mostly shows the faces of Canadians in different cities, watching the concert live or on TV (half the country watched the live broadcast). Be careful to watch the video with the actual concert footage, instead. ---OronOfMontreal
That concert was the first Tragically Hip songs I had ever heard. After, I found every damn album and listened for weeks. I was one of those Americans bawling by the last song.
The heartbreak for me was him ending on Ahead by a Century. The last words he sang on stage were "and disappointing you is getting me down. " And you knew he meant it.
The Hip sang it as their 2nd encore, during their last show. When Gord sang the closing lyrics "Him, Here, Now, Huhh", I heard it as a primal scream coming from him, a scream at this twist of fate that shortened his life... I might be wrong, but to this day I hear that way. RIP Gord.
Bobcaygeon should be next. Especially if they want to dive deeper into its context. The Hip was a great band for making us look at our history. Even the less flattering looks. Wheat Kings would be great too.
The Live SNL version of this performance is awesome. Dan Ackroyd introduced them. Gord was so nervous he forgot the lyrics and instead of saying, “we’re fabulously rich” he said, “We’re Tragically Hip.”
An 80s Toronto new wave band whose lead singer recently passed away, had a one hit I thik you would like. It's an early, syth-based danceloor song and the lead singer was known for his unique dancing (which all tried to copy): "Don't Walk On Past" by Blue Peter.
So Hard Done by and Pigeon Camera don't get the respect that they deserve. Great songs often overlooked by the more radio friendly songs off of their's.
Amber hits the nail on the head in describing this as atmospheric. And so, when the album came out, I didn't get into it as I had with the earlier ones. In fact, I didn't buy a copy until at least a decade later. It's only after having them open the only concert of theirs I attended with this song, that somehow I finally got into it. Now, it's one of my top five tunes of theirs. And I definitely suggest seeing them perform it live: particularly the last time in Kingston. (That whole concert is available online and I'm sure you would be moved by it like much of Canada and Hip fans around the world were when we watched it live knowing Gord's condition).
One of the best bands ever and for sure this song is an all time favourite. So blessed I was able to see them 9 times live in concert in Belgium. The Hip and Gord 4 ever 🤘🇨🇦
Grab the vibe man, that's the best you can hope for. I have heard this song many thousands of times, when I listen I can put myself in the place, the words can come out of my mouth, it can put tears in my eyes, but the best I can do is grab hold of the vibe.

I’m 53 years old and out of all the old old bands that I was raised on to current bands I cannot find a single band that has stuck together, stayed clean and played SO TIGHT that they’ve never had one single bad show. Best frontman ever. Fabulous human. So blessed to have met him.
The lyrics allude to a very specific incident. In 1981, there was a 'knock at the door' Police in British Colombia wanted to question Clifford Olsen because Kim Werbecky told police she had been brutally raped and assaulted after getting in a car with a man who promised her work washing windows in Whistler. She was considered an unreliable witness because of her lifestyle and history and the serial killer was eventually released. You've found Canada's greatest treasure and best-kept secret; now it's time for our other gem, Blue Rodeo. "Bad Timing", or "Rose-coloured Glasses" are good starters.
One of our Gords. We love them both. This is one of their best songs and the name of the band is in there. I am getting chills already. Every time. Love this band so much.
Good reaction! I was always a fan of Rob Baker on guitar. For the same type of vibe, I would recommend, "Bobcaygeon" next, and for a more straightforward rock-and-roll vibe, I would recommend, "Blow at High Dough", from the same band.

October 17th will mark 7 yrs since Gords death. I love this band like no other, he was a phenomenal storyteller. Rest in Power Gord you are loved & missed. ❤
If you liked this, hearing a live version is 10 timea better. Especially their final concert before Gord passed, he lets out these gutteral screams that drive into your soul.
This song is so deep and so dark, yet it draws you in, making you to want to dive in deeper and understand what this masterpiece of a song is all about. It's origins are based on rape and murder, but the song is absolutely outstanding both musically and lyrically. The Hip are Tragically underrated.
I've been a big fan of the The Hip since the 1990's, and I was lucky enough to see them live multiple times back them. Watching you all enjoy them is a real pleasure.
Gord's lyrics are deep...he was a poet. The Hip ARE a vibe and that's the best way to listen to them. They never changed who they were to gain bigger financial success State-side and that's 1 of the many reasons they are our band 🇨🇦 RIP Gord 🙏
They’re from Kingston On Canada. And have so much more that you guys need to react to. They’re a great bunch of guys also (RIP Gord) my daughter and I went to see Stop Making Sense on the rerelease last year, and Robbie Baker (lead guitarist) his wife, and a couple friends sat in front of us, and we chatted with them like it was everyday, good, down to earth Kingstonians, a day I won’t forget for a long time!
ok guys glad you love the hip, a Canadian treasure. For Rob - the 100th meridian, for lyrics - gift shop, for Amber - mellow Bobcaygeon. check them out.
Probably the greatest Rock Band most of the world doesn't know. Great tune. Their first 6 LPs are all top shelf: Up To Here; Road Apples; Fully Completely; Day For Night; Trouble At The Henhouse; Phantom Power. This tune is the opener on Day For Night.
Another great Canadian band who happen to be discovered by SRV is Colin James and the little big band, with songs like Three Hours Past Midnight, Cadillac Baby or I Just Came Back
Since you two love how this band mixes it up, you should check out Bobcaygeon next. (Pronounced "Bob Cajun"). Totally different vibe, and I think you'll dig the lyrics, Amber.
"Courage".. "Locked in the Trunk of a Car".. "Blow at high Dough".. "Little Bones".. "So Hard Done By".. "Yer Not the Ocean".. and "The Darkest One" (with video).. Great Hip tunes, and many more.
Thanx so much for reacting and enjoying "Grace , Too" by Canada's The Tragically Hip, The Hip. It is a very deep rabbit hole you have entered, but a very rewarding one!!!
I've never met a person who doesn't love the hip the moment they hear it for the first time. Our Canadian hidden treasure. RIP Gord, still rockin the hip on the daily,
When it comes to The Tragically Hip, it’s really better to think of them as a folk/folk rock band in a lot of ways. Every song tells a story. A truly Canadian story. When Gord announced his condition, a nation mourned. Then we got to celebrate his life and their accomplishments when they went on a nation wide tour. My wife and I were extremely fortunate enough to catch both of the last shows in Edmonton. The feeling in the building was amazing. All the love pouring out. We watched the final show too. Cheered out loud when Gord dropped the “F” bomb seven times on the CBC and they let it fly. The vast majority of their music is excellent. But a couple of my favorites are Gift Shop and Poets. And look into some of the stories behind the songs. 50 Mission Cap and Wheat Kings
J.D. Souther died yesterday. How about honoring him by doing You’re Only Lonely or Her Town Too (with James Taylor). He collaborated with the Eagles and dated Linda Ronstadt in the 70s, if you’re not familiar with him…. ❤
Thanks for playing the Hip there is a street named after them and a pier named after Gord have been to both places I miss my hometown I wish I could share pictures in Gord we trust

October 17th will mark 7 yrs since Gords death. I love this band like no other, he was a phenomenal storyteller. Rest in Power Gord you are loved & missed. ❤
"They're such a cool chill vibe!!"...yeah man... they're Canadian 😉that's one of the reasons we love them so much, laid back, just like us😁
Ford has spoken to many with his music. RIP and thank you for what you taught me. May you be with the Lord and all of those before you.
If you liked this, hearing a live version is 10 timea better. Especially their final concert before Gord passed, he lets out these gutteral screams that drive into your soul.
No one's talking about Gord Sinclair's epic bass playing holding this awesome track together.
This song is so deep and so dark, yet it draws you in, making you to want to dive in deeper and understand what this masterpiece of a song is all about. It's origins are based on rape and murder, but the song is absolutely outstanding both musically and lyrically. The Hip are Tragically underrated.
Yes, it's always a good day when we get The Hip!!!! Gord was a poet. RIP
I've been a big fan of the The Hip since the 1990's, and I was lucky enough to see them live multiple times back them. Watching you all enjoy them is a real pleasure.
Locked in a Trunk of a Car is my favorite Hip tune.
Gord's lyrics are deep...he was a poet. The Hip ARE a vibe and that's the best way to listen to them. They never changed who they were to gain bigger financial success State-side and that's 1 of the many reasons they are our band 🇨🇦 RIP Gord 🙏
Oh Gord. Loved always and always. You are so missed.
Long live The Hip!
New awesome documentary coming soon 😊❤
Great tune!
I don't see any recommendations for "Locked in the Trunk of a Car". It's got a cool vibe, too but it's also got a tension to it.
Luv the video as well
Before Gord passed the Hip did a Canadian Tour for the fans. Amazing band and better people. Amazing live seen them 3 times.
THREE PISTOLS will brun your drawers off. One of the top vocal performances of all time and the song just COOKS from start to finish.
ok guys glad you love the hip, a Canadian treasure. For Rob - the 100th meridian, for lyrics - gift shop, for Amber - mellow Bobcaygeon. check them out.
good call,,,the first 1,,,🍁🤘🤘🤘
The Hip are always a 10. RIP Gord.
That's what he is here for!!!
Love the hip. Check out Wheat Kings and Pretty Things
Wheat kings! Awesome song about a tragedy in my hometown Saskatoon.
NOW THAT WAS A FREAKIN' RIDE!!! AWESOME!
Please try “Nautical Disaster”! 🖖🏼
Oh boy ❤ if you're diving into this pool, please look for Fiddlers Green 💚
One of their MOST beautiful and heartbreaking songs. The emotion from Gord as he sings about his nephew is tangible.
@@chrisgilbert9076 it breaks me up every time I hear it
More Hip!!! Keep it coming ❤🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
So many great Canadian bands. 54-40, our Lady peace, Sam Robert's band,
A great Canadian band!
The Hip, excellent! *Little Bones* goes hard.
Thanx so much for reacting and enjoying "Grace , Too" by Canada's The Tragically Hip, The Hip. It is a very deep rabbit hole you have entered, but a very rewarding one!!!
“Courage”, either the Hip’s original or Sarah Polley’s from the soundtrack of “The Sweet Hereafter”
Such a jam!
i first heard this song before the album came out as the opening track for the tour in hamilton. i'll never forget it. it is such an amazing song!
I had this song for years as my alarm to wake me in the morning. A great way to start your day. So cool.
J.D. Souther died yesterday. How about honoring him by doing You’re Only Lonely or Her Town Too (with James Taylor). He collaborated with the Eagles and dated Linda Ronstadt in the 70s, if you’re not familiar with him…. ❤
My favorite band, and btw best lyrics in rock, long live the Hip, RIP Gord.
Thanks for playing the Hip there is a street named after them and a pier named after Gord have been to both places I miss my hometown I wish I could share pictures in Gord we trust
Thank you, thank you, keep the Hip coming!!!!
next Hip reaction try a live version, Gord's stage presence is top teir
For a more blusey rocker, check out "Blow at High Dough"
Up here north of your border The Hip is all that’s necessary unless the person one’s talking with is foreign then it’s the Tragically Hip. Certainly one of the more interesting groups we’ve dealt out that is best known at home here in 🇨🇦. 😎🍺☮️🇨🇦
One of my favorite Hip songs!
I always get the sads when I listen to The Hip...Gord Downie was The Tragically Hip.
Really great to see you enjoying The Hip!
Their documentary on Prime is amazing.
I’ve always loved this one, since it was first released. Hearing it live was even better, it’d bring the whole place down. 🥹 There were times when I couldn’t even hear Gord singing over the crowd. So much awesomeness.
Criminally underrated band.
