@@SupernalOne since the noise appears when she's closing and opening her eyes it's suggesting to be the noise of a camera shutter. Older and larger cameras made that noise quite loudly. However, I always associated both with that noise, a camera as well as a rifle. I think she's playing with that ambiguity here.

The term B.F.P.O. means British Forces Post Office. Essentially each time you hear that in the song it signifies another "death letter" has been sent out.
No, definitely British Forces Post Office, all military stations overseas has a BFPO number similar to a post code or zip code e.g. RAF Laarbruch in Germany where I was in the 80’s was BFPO 43. In the song the line ‘coming home from BFPO’ is a reference to returning to the UK from overseas & in the context of the song he was obviously a casualty. Not sure if the physical BFPO as a unit were responsible for the repatriation of fallen servicemen though.

Kate is a massive talent - accomplished musician, writer, arranger, producer, studio engineer, dancer, choreographer, responsible for all her own album artwork, the concepts for her videos - shows up many of today's 'stars' for the corporate tools they truly are. She also had the courage to walk away when she wanted to start a family. Give her track 'Hammer Horror' a listen - it's almost prog rock in it's ambition.
Thanks for reacting to this. Kate Bush is one of my favourite artists. This one was incredible - had me in a trance. The meannig was incredibly put over too. A mother losing her son in a war & almost how she's playing it over & over in her head. She's on another level for me.
If you weren't convinced by Kate's ability to do EVERY note in pursuit of a theme - this dispels it. There is a literal generation of British musicians (male and female) who will cite her as a cause to make music.
Kate Bush is astonishing. "There should be a ballet to it" - well of course Kate is a fabulous dancer as well. Another amazing British musical talent you should highlight is Mike Oldfield and the "Wee Scottish vocalist" (in a number of his major hits) Maggie Reilly.
If you can't tell, this is an anti-war song. Just like in the U.S. many of the recruits of the British army choose that path because of a lack of other opportunities. But instead of the experience helping them get ahead, it will end up killing them. Their mothers might be proud when they join up to serve, but will grieve when they receive a letter from the army saying their boy has died.

Thatcher had just been elected and she was VERY interested in expanding Britain's "Role in the World" ie throwing British Squadies into whatever conflict the US was then engaged in... Then she engineered a conflict in the Falklands AND Thatcher expanded the role of the British Military in murdering Nationalists in Northern Ireland... Guess what? Some of those the British Military attacked, shot back....

If you want to hear something really theatrical, you must check out “Breathing”, which Kate herself called “my little symphony”. It’s one of the greatest displays of her genius at work.

This was great but you must must must do "The Man With the Child in his Eyes" a stunning piano and strings classic and one of her biggest hits. Written in felt tip pen at 13 and recorded at 16 I can guarantee it will blow you away.
The live version is stunning. Just Kate playing piano beautifully and pitch perfect vocals. If Amber wants a Kate live reaction this would be it but I would still recommend the full arrangement first and then the live one.

It was when he first visited the family home in Kent and she played him tapes of over 50 songs she had written at that point - others would also end up appearing on The Kick Inside and Lionheart.

The first stanza sets the premise of the story: "Our little army boy Is coming home from B.F.P.O. I've a bunch of purple flowers To decorate mammy's hero Mourning in the aerodrome The weather warmer, he is colder Four men in uniform To carry home my little soldier" The song is an anti-war song. The main character is a mum grieving for her young son (less than 20) whose body is being shipped home through the BFPO (British Army mail postal system). I think :"Army Dreamers" is from the tranche of songs she wrote as a teenager! Not an older teen, but young teen! Try "Oh To Be In Love," it's from eh same era, late 70s early 80s.

Hi Maria, we're the same age! I was a 13 year old Dutch boy in 1978 when Kate enchanted me like a beautiful good witch and I've been under her spell ever since. All her songs are so different but they are all unmistakeably Kate. She creates a new mysterious world and takes you with her on a journey in every single song. It is just magic and I will love her music until the day I die.

At school we were reading "Wuthering Heights" for our English literature exam (O'level), in England when Kate was number 1 in UK charts with her song of the same name. For me and my family her music always sounds best when listening to it driving and walking in the English countryside preferably in Autumn when it's chilly with grey skies above. Then going home as it gets dark and all the lights are glowing from cottages and houses along the tiny country lanes. It always provokes a deep, almost magical atmosphere of enchantment and mystery. Very thought provoking and leaves me with a lovely warm sense of, " old fashioned", contentment. Especially if we finish off the walk with a cream tea in a pretty little oldey worldy tea rooms. Sorry, I got a bit carried away. Her music just does that to me.❤✌🇬🇧

It’s written like a lullaby musically, but in opposition, it’s about a child never being able to reach ANY potential. Read the lyrics, which are a bit hard to hear. He didn’t have money or education, so joined the army, and “didn’t even make it to his ‘20s”. Powerful stuff. Kate’s a genius. I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS!

I always thought of it as a sad ballad because there’s such a darkness to it, rather than a lullaby, but I did a little digging on what the song is about, in case you didn’t know. It’s about floating in water in something like the ocean where she’s all alone. She’s afraid, like the lyrics says, that if someone sees her, they’ll think she’s a buoy. And she’s so afraid that she just wants to go to sleep, but she knows if she goes to sleep she’ll go under the water.

Great choice , I have loved kate Bush since 1979 when I was 10 years old and bought one of my first albums The whole story by kate, the album was on cassette to play in my vw bug and video I was 17 . she is such a unique artist with a haunting voice. i still enjoy her songs her vocals .
This song has a classic waltz time signature, it's probably what was making you feel so nostalgic and thinking about old-timey circuses. The idea of the song being a folk waltz and pairing it with a war-- what is a war if not a dance between two parties? And the rote timing of the army maneuvers in the field along with the old song and dance... This is a timeless pain that mothers and sons have experienced. What a waste. Good job y'all! why have I never seen her. This came out Sept 22, 1980. How did I miss her. Music was still my life then. I was a singer in a lot of little R&R bar bands. Some times 2 or three at a time. Never lead just backup. I can play drums wont say more then that other then I dont speed up or slow down keep that beat good. When ever I did play drums we soon found someone much better. But this woman how did I miss her.
Here in the U.S. she was mostly played on college radio and some commercial alternative radio, so if you were listening to either of those you would have heard of her. I discovered her by accident at 16 while driving. It was the song "The Dreaming" and I just happened to hit a station left of the dial and voila there she was. I remember the whole experience clearly. It was a watershed music moment for me.

The story goes that after Kate turned down the offer to support Fleetwood Mac on their US tour EMI America was so annoyed they refused to release any of her records in the US between early 1979 (after her SNL performance) and 1982. Never Forever the album was only available as an import - it topped the import charts in NYC where John Lennon was a vociferous supporter. The record company were probably correct in thinking that Kate was not prepared to do what was necessary to be successful in the US, She has never liked being away from home for long periods, She also went out of her way to produce music that defied genre. This was a problem with US radio. In the UK she was already very well known (the most photographed Woman of 1978) and financially secure for life due to her ownership of her music and her massive early sales (the 8th biggest selling album of 1978 and 10th biggest selling single).
The context of the single was the British Army's ongoing counterinsurgency campaign in N. Ireland, which had already been going on for ten years. The song gets banned on public broadcasting here when Britain goes to war. If you want another powerful commentary on "The Troubles" listen to The Cranberries: "Zombie" which criticizes all sides and is even more heart rending.

That was my introduction to Kate, but I didn't know who the artist was. I took me several years to finally hear her again - different song but I knew it was the same woman. And you should check out "The Man...." She was a teenager when she wrote it and it is an amazing ballad.
In the late 1970i saw Kate Bush on top of the pops...and as a six year old child I was amazed by her...I grew up listening to her music...I have always loved her..she is my favourite female singer... unbelievably talented.. It reminded me of a movie called 'In Country' with Bruce Willis and Emily Lloyd about a young girl that just graduated from high school and is trying to find out about her father who was killed in Vietnam before she was born. I was one who couldn't do a lot of the things I dreamed about as a boy due to circumstances, so I joined The Marine Corps, it hit home pretty hard. I really didn't think about it while I was in the service, but circumstances could've ended my life before I even got the chance to live it. The day after my 20th birthday, a suicide bomber killed 241 Marines and sailors and 58 French military personnel in Beirut, Lebanon. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Cailfornia at the time, but I knew 5 of the Marines that died. Two of them were in my platoon in Basic Training, and I went to Cook's school with 3 of them. As a teen in the early 80s I fell in love with KB and then realised we share the same birthday! Her voice is incredible but those eyes.....they get me every time.
You're right this video is almost like a play. I remember Kate saying in a 90's interview that for the 1st few years of her career in the 70's she was into dance & ballet so her videos reflected that then, by the 80's she wanted her videos to look more Cinematic.

Just last week, Kate released a new short animated video, and in a live BBC interview, she mentioned that she’s working on a new album. We Kate Bush fans are beyond excited for this upcoming release, which is bound to be something extraordinary. I can also highly recommend her last album from 2011, 50 Words for Snow, and her live album from the 2014 concert series, which was released as well.
It's unbelievable how much America "slept" on Kate Bush until Stranger Things, considering she was admired by many US artists including Prince, and adored here in the UK. She is a bonafide musical genius!
Not totally true. "Running up that Hill" hit the Top 40 in the US in the 80s, and I remember it being all over MTV. "This Woman's Work" and "Don't Give Up" were pretty well known too. I think by not touring with the Hounds of Love album cost her a large American audience. She probably didn't care that much, but all the classic British bands and artists knew that if you wanted to crack America you have to tour there. It's impressive she's got as big an American audience as she has without ever playing here.

This song always made me so sad the mother is singing about all the great things he could have done because he has passed, she sings about her getting him back through the British Forces Post Office and the military wanting to give him medals and awards but its meaningless to her and useless to him because he's gone, and she rather have her son.
You cannot go wrong with a Kate Bush album, especially her earlier work. Try violin off the Never Forever LP (same one Army Dreamers comes from). That's one of her rockin' songs, and it's brilliant.

I think that by now I've got all of Kate Bush's albums on either CD or bought digitally. But this video really brings me way back! Sometime before (or while...) doing my one year of compulsory army service in 1987/88, I bought a VHS with all of Kate Bush's videos up to that point. I must admit that I'd never heard her music, but the VHS was on sale and she looked cute, so... 😉 One of my best buys ever! Oh, and if you've ever seen a Madness music video with the guys 'dancing'/running/jumping in a row across a white background, I expect they also watched Kate's videos and tried to make very bad versions of 'graceful!. 🤣 Oh, and if you can get your hands on that old music video of her earliest Greatest Hits, go for it! I've got two left feet, so I never dance, but it makes me happy seeing people who love to do it (as long as they don't try to involve me...). 😄 For this song, her voice and performance is as understated as her message is not. I think that was how it got to me so strongly back then. Oh, and had forgotten that one: Two shots of a soldier being blown forwards, once with a gun, the other time with a guitar instead... If I remember it correctly (not sure when/where I read that) , it was about a mother grieving for her son who was killed for no reason while just being part of peacetime training/maneuvers. I might remember it wrong 3-4 decades later, though. But I don't think so.
Absolutely, wonderful track, that along with some album tracks cemented my adoration of her. The official vid is not great quality, The 70s a decade of music in 60fps has a much better video up.
I love pretty much everything Kate Bush does and I idolized her in the 80's when I was going through puberty! From the album The Dreaming - her song "The Dreaming" is mysterious and has great rhythm. I know you'd love that and I love all the songs on that album, especially "All the Love", "Night of the Swallow" and "The Dreaming." ❣

No, definitely British Forces Post Office, all military stations overseas has a BFPO number similar to a post code or zip code e.g. RAF Laarbruch in Germany where I was in the 80’s was BFPO 43.
In the song the line ‘coming home from BFPO’ is a reference to returning to the UK from overseas & in the context of the song he was obviously a casualty.
Not sure if the physical BFPO as a unit were responsible for the repatriation of fallen servicemen though.

Kate is a massive talent - accomplished musician, writer, arranger, producer, studio engineer, dancer, choreographer, responsible for all her own album artwork, the concepts for her videos - shows up many of today's 'stars' for the corporate tools they truly are. She also had the courage to walk away when she wanted to start a family. Give her track 'Hammer Horror' a listen - it's almost prog rock in it's ambition.

If you weren't convinced by Kate's ability to do EVERY note in pursuit of a theme - this dispels it. There is a literal generation of British musicians (male and female) who will cite her as a cause to make music.

Kate Bush is astonishing. "There should be a ballet to it" - well of course Kate is a fabulous dancer as well. Another amazing British musical talent you should highlight is Mike Oldfield and the "Wee Scottish vocalist" (in a number of his major hits) Maggie Reilly.
If you can't tell, this is an anti-war song. Just like in the U.S. many of the recruits of the British army choose that path because of a lack of other opportunities. But instead of the experience helping them get ahead, it will end up killing them. Their mothers might be proud when they join up to serve, but will grieve when they receive a letter from the army saying their boy has died.
Very few recruits will die in active service during peace time.
But unlike in the US, Military Service in the UK does NOT open a path to Third Level Education and personal advancement....

It was when he first visited the family home in Kent and she played him tapes of over 50 songs she had written at that point - others would also end up appearing on The Kick Inside and Lionheart.
Babooshka is such a hoot off Kate’s Never Forever album, and Breathing is so unique - I can’t think of anyone else who could have created this.

So glad you did this song. One of the first Kate Bush songs I heard the summer I was 10 and it's remained one of my favourite songs. The first stanza sets the premise of the story:

At school we were reading "Wuthering Heights" for our English literature exam (O'level), in England when Kate was number 1 in UK charts with her song of the same name. For me and my family her music always sounds best when listening to it driving and walking in the English countryside preferably in Autumn when it's chilly with grey skies above. Then going home as it gets dark and all the lights are glowing from cottages and houses along the tiny country lanes. It always provokes a deep, almost magical atmosphere of enchantment and mystery. Very thought provoking and leaves me with a lovely warm sense of, " old fashioned", contentment. Especially if we finish off the walk with a cream tea in a pretty little oldey worldy tea rooms. Sorry, I got a bit carried away. Her music just does that to me.❤✌🇬🇧

I always thought of it as a sad ballad because there’s such a darkness to it, rather than a lullaby, but I did a little digging on what the song is about, in case you didn’t know. It’s about floating in water in something like the ocean where she’s all alone. She’s afraid, like the lyrics says, that if someone sees her, they’ll think she’s a buoy. And she’s so afraid that she just wants to go to sleep, but she knows if she goes to sleep she’ll go under the water.

This song has a classic waltz time signature, it's probably what was making you feel so nostalgic and thinking about old-timey circuses. The idea of the song being a folk waltz and pairing it with a war-- what is a war if not a dance between two parties? And the rote timing of the army maneuvers in the field along with the old song and dance... This is a timeless pain that mothers and sons have experienced. What a waste.

why have I never seen her. This came out Sept 22, 1980. How did I miss her. Music was still my life then. I was a singer in a lot of little R&R bar bands. Some times 2 or three at a time. Never lead just backup. I can play drums wont say more then that other then I dont speed up or slow down keep that beat good. When ever I did play drums we soon found someone much better.
But this woman how did I miss her.
Here in the U.S. she was mostly played on college radio and some commercial alternative radio, so if you were listening to either of those you would have heard of her. I discovered her by accident at 16 while driving. It was the song "The Dreaming" and I just happened to hit a station left of the dial and voila there she was. I remember the whole experience clearly. It was a watershed music moment for me.

The story goes that after Kate turned down the offer to support Fleetwood Mac on their US tour EMI America was so annoyed they refused to release any of her records in the US between early 1979 (after her SNL performance) and 1982. Never Forever the album was only available as an import - it topped the import charts in NYC where John Lennon was a vociferous supporter.
The record company were probably correct in thinking that Kate was not prepared to do what was necessary to be successful in the US, She has never liked being away from home for long periods,
She also went out of her way to produce music that defied genre. This was a problem with US radio. In the UK she was already very well known (the most photographed Woman of 1978) and financially secure for life due to her ownership of her music and her massive early sales (the 8th biggest selling album of 1978 and 10th biggest selling single).

The context of the single was the British Army's ongoing counterinsurgency campaign in N. Ireland, which had already been going on for ten years. The song gets banned on public broadcasting here when Britain goes to war.
If you want another powerful commentary on "The Troubles" listen to The Cranberries: "Zombie" which criticizes all sides and is even more heart rending.

Kate denied it was directly connected to Northern Ireland. She said she imagined the son had died during training manoeuvres in West Germany. The use of BFPO would not apply to NI as it is not considered overseas. She also explained the Irish accent used as fitting the tone of the music and connected it with her own (Irish) mother.

That was my introduction to Kate, but I didn't know who the artist was. I took me several years to finally hear her again - different song but I knew it was the same woman. And you should check out "The Man...." She was a teenager when she wrote it and it is an amazing ballad.

It reminded me of a movie called 'In Country' with Bruce Willis and Emily Lloyd about a young girl that just graduated from high school and is trying to find out about her father who was killed in Vietnam before she was born. I was one who couldn't do a lot of the things I dreamed about as a boy due to circumstances, so I joined The Marine Corps, it hit home pretty hard. I really didn't think about it while I was in the service, but circumstances could've ended my life before I even got the chance to live it. The day after my 20th birthday, a suicide bomber killed 241 Marines and sailors and 58 French military personnel in Beirut, Lebanon. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Cailfornia at the time, but I knew 5 of the Marines that died. Two of them were in my platoon in Basic Training, and I went to Cook's school with 3 of them. Just last week, Kate released a new short animated video, and in a live BBC interview, she mentioned that she’s working on a new album. We Kate Bush fans are beyond excited for this upcoming release, which is bound to be something extraordinary. It's unbelievable how much America "slept" on Kate Bush until Stranger Things, considering she was admired by many US artists including Prince, and adored here in the UK. She is a bonafide musical genius!
Not totally true. "Running up that Hill" hit the Top 40 in the US in the 80s, and I remember it being all over MTV. "This Woman's Work" and "Don't Give Up" were pretty well known too. I think by not touring with the Hounds of Love album cost her a large American audience. She probably didn't care that much, but all the classic British bands and artists knew that if you wanted to crack America you have to tour there. It's impressive she's got as big an American audience as she has without ever playing here.

This song always made me so sad the mother is singing about all the great things he could have done because he has passed, she sings about her getting him back through the British Forces Post Office and the military wanting to give him medals and awards but its meaningless to her and useless to him because he's gone, and she rather have her son.
You cannot go wrong with a Kate Bush album, especially her earlier work. Try violin off the Never Forever LP (same one Army Dreamers comes from). That's one of her rockin' songs, and it's brilliant.
You've given us a wonderful week so far guys, but this Kate song is another level. Thank you yet again. Now I ask this too often I know but I'll keep asking till you play. Kate is yet another artist influenced by Nick Drake. How do you top today? Play River Man, or Northern Sky, or Cello Song........,or anything by Nick. And prepare to have life turned upside down by your new obsession.......in a wonderful journey of discovery.

I acknowledge her creativity and musical genius. There is no doubt about it. Is this a song I would have on heavy rotation on my playlist. No. Like the protest songs of the 60s and 70s, I love that she makes people think. We really do need to bring humanity to a higher level of consciousness.

I think that by now I've got all of Kate Bush's albums on either CD or bought digitally. But this video really brings me way back! Sometime before (or while...) doing my one year of compulsory army service in 1987/88, I bought a VHS with all of Kate Bush's videos up to that point. I must admit that I'd never heard her music, but the VHS was on sale and she looked cute, so... 😉 One of my best buys ever! Oh, and if you've ever seen a Madness music video with the guys 'dancing'/running/jumping in a row across a white background, I expect they also watched Kate's videos and tried to make very bad versions of 'graceful!. 🤣
Oh, and if you can get your hands on that old music video of her earliest Greatest Hits, go for it! I've got two left feet, so I never dance, but it makes me happy seeing people who love to do it (as long as they don't try to involve me...). 😄
For this song, her voice and performance is as understated as her message is not. I think that was how it got to me so strongly back then. Oh, and had forgotten that one: Two shots of a soldier being blown forwards, once with a gun, the other time with a guitar instead... If I remember it correctly (not sure when/where I read that) , it was about a mother grieving for her son who was killed for no reason while just being part of peacetime training/maneuvers. I might remember it wrong 3-4 decades later, though. But I don't think so.

I love pretty much everything Kate Bush does and I idolized her in the 80's when I was going through puberty! From the album The Dreaming - her song "The Dreaming" is mysterious and has great rhythm. I know you'd love that and I love all the songs on that album, especially "All the Love", "Night of the Swallow" and "The Dreaming." ❣
