All thanks to digital distribution which Valve popularized. Valve has done more damage to gaming than any other company, EA wishes they were as bad as Valve.
@@randomtask3539 ...How? Digital distribution already existed before Valve, and i don't think they invented DLC, pre-orders, early acess or anything like that, other devs did and then they really went for it. Hell, you can't even say that Early Acess is new when roguelikes were constantly getting upgraded in the 80's already, nor can you say that games didn't get released without bugs or incompleted, considering Robocop on the C64 wasn't finished or you couldn't complete Jet Set Willy at release. Don't get me wrong, DLC sucks when they are present on release or only add things like skins, and it's annoying getting day one patches, but Valve didn't force anyone to do that.
It is funny how the N64 was basically carried entirely by two developers; Nintendo and Rare. Sure there were a few good games that were made by other companies, but they weren't nearly as successful.
The N64 presented 3 issues for developers. 1 it was difficult to program games for. 2 cartridges held much less information than a disk did. Games would load faster but games like Final Fantasy VII would have required something like 30 cartridges instead of 3 disks. 3 the biggest issue was Nintendo wanted developers to create games exclusively for the N64, where strict on content, and Shigeru Miyamoto was kinda of a dick. He tore apart Argonaut Games who developed the original Star Fox as well as the Super FX chip needed to play the game on a Super Nintendo. He scraped their Star Fox Sequel that was supposed to come out towards the end of the Super Nintendo's life span because it looked better than the Version he was developing for the new N64 console. Then after cancelling the game Shigeru harvested the assets and used them in other games, most notably certain camera controls and functions for Super Mario 64. So its not surprising other developers didn't want to work with Nintendo. Even Rare incurred the wrath of Shigeru during their Super Nintendo days. He absolutely despised the pre-rendered 3D sprites that gave games like Donkey Kong Country their unique look.
I actually got to play Freak Boy myself in my game design documentation class since my professor is the game's creator. I do have to admit, it's pretty damn fun for what it is.
Starfox felt shoehorned in. I liked the game overall. But making the final boss an arwing fight, while there only small arwing passages made it not a good final boss
Those GTA 64 screenshots, I remember back in the days reading that magazine "Hobby Consolas". It is kinda shitty nowadays but it was THE MAGAZINE in Spain during several years. I have translated into english what's written in Spanish for you guyz (11:00): "Finally, after a lot of months after a lot of months of continued stalking, DMA Design have spoken and approved the release of an N64 version of its super violent car game, GTA. It has cost them a lot of effort. In fact, two long years ago, when the N64 began its journey we could already see a version of GTA for the console that took advantage of the Silicon Valley engine, in the DMA headquarters. At that time, the problem was not to make the conversion to the N64 but to get Nintendo to give its approval to an argument full of bullets to innocent pedestrians and suspicious deals between mobsters. However, now that Resident Evil has come out for this console, as well as super bloody Turok and the not exactly childish Perfect Dark, the big N could not say no. The full version at 50% has debuted at E3, proving that 1999 will not only be the year of the great games for N64, but also the year of the great N64 games for adults. We will go into details about GTA 64 next month." Img1 (left):Move the camera away as much as you want and then bring it closer. How cool! Img2 (right): Start dreaming about GTA 64, because within a very short time you will have it in your hands. The rest is history. This game is nowhere to be found.
Hmm, interesting. I heard that DMA/Rockstar may have had some issues with Nintendo that led to the game's cancellation, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer anywhere.
Same here, dude.. same here. Can't count how many hours I put into Super Mario 64. To this day it remains the gold standard for 3D Mario games. Everyone's going crazy for Mario Odyssey, and while it's nice, to me SM64 is still the very best.
@budal15 Y'know back in the day my local Toys R Us had kiosks for both and after playing them side by side it was no competition in my mind. Some of the PS1 games I tried were enjoyable enough but the sometimes long load times and grainy graphics didn't really help the Playstation's case.
If you haven't heard, a game studio very recently had a massive success on Kickstarter to release the N64 port of 40 Winks! It faced a similar fate as some of the games in this video in that it was scrapped after the original studio got bought out, but now it will be officially released, complete in box!
I remember when Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 0, and Dinosaur Planet were supposed to come for the N64. It killed me when they didn't and it kinda still does. Had those three games along with Mother 3 and the Fire Emblem game been released, I think the way we look back on the system would be different. EDIT - And Metroid of course too. Hell, if Metroid alone would have come out for 64 the system would be completely different.
Such a shame that some of these games get so far in production only to be canned at the last minute. What a waste. However, this video wasn't a waste! Another great episode dude 😊
The bit about Metroid begs the question: “What game’s didn’t make the leap to 3D until AFTER the 5th generation?” Id actually be very interested in seeing this covered by somebody.
Umm... GTA64 not happening had nothing to do with Nintendo's attitude towards violence. Nintendo did a bit of censorship during the NES and early SNES-days, yet people think that this is a common practice until this very day. GTA64 not happening is in all likelyhood down to DMA/Rockstar being pissed that Nintendo being a general pain in the ass while developing Body Harvest.
yeah, I mean literally the very first entry in the GTA series was released on a nintendo console lol. and the N64 had more than a few dark titles. Shadow Man for example, where you trek through hell...
Another of the games that really hurts me to not even been mentioned anymore is Gradius 64... I still think it was just Gradius IV port, but still, a very welcome addition to the very lacking N64 library. Anyway, very very nice video mate, you winned a new sub, you really deserve it.
11:04 The reason why GTA 64 was cancelled was due to the Fallout between the Big N & DMA when Nintendo's Japanese & North American branches couldn't agree on how DMA's other title "Body Harvest" should be portrayed. The reason why they meddled into the development cycle besides funding the game was due to another feud they were having with Square Enix at the time. Why? Final Fantasy 7!!!!!!! Nintendo got pissed that Square Enix decided to abandon them for Sony, So they wanted more RPGs for the N64 compete with Sony's new lineup! It was then that Shigeru Miyamoto decided that screwing up Dinosaur Planet wasn't enough, So he requested Body Harvest to be converted to an RPG despite the fact that it won't work as 1! Surprisingly, the North American branch was more tolerant of DMA's vision but the Japanese branch wanted changes made to the character, the story & gameplay mechanics. The North American branch defended DMA's plans to the end & thus the Japanese branch got so frustrated with the bickering & broken mechanics from said bickering that they pulled funding and cancelled Body Harvest altogether, thus forcing DMA into bankruptcy & then they were bought by Gremlin studios who pitied DMA & released the game in both European and North American markets but due to the grudge held against the Japanese, DMA banned the game from Japan & when they started on GTA, they refused to release a title for Nintendo Home Consoles!!!
onaretrotip I meant to say Gremlin Graphics alternatively known as Gremlin Interactive who bought out DMA Design. Believe it or not: after the release of Body Harvest, Gremlin Graphics was bought out by Infogrames & although they kept it until their own acquisition, they sold off DMA Design to Take 2 Interactive & if it weren't for Take 2, GTA either would have never existed to begin with or would have been different from the series we got & thus cancelled by the time the global recession hit in 2008! 3:11 Care to know what became of Gametek after their demise? They were bought out by the same company that has DMA Design today back in 1999, the same year Infogrames sold DMA Design to them. However, the rights for RoboTech games were acquired by TDK Media Active back in 1997 & they told Studio Nue (The Anime's Creator) that they rather start from scratch and so Crystal Dreams is what it sounds like... A mere dream that may never come true! TDK did make 2 different games in the series before biting the dust themselves & got acquired by our good friends at Take 2 Interactive! The final game in the series was then picked up by Global Star who themselves were acquired by our good friend, Take 2 Interactive shortly after release & became 2K Games!! So in a way, Take 2 Interactive was involved with the game series since the beginning! The only way to get Crystal Dreams off the ground is to either reproduce it or somehow convince Take 2 Interactive to renegotiate the rights for the license from Nue Studios & distribute the game as a digital title. I guess it would be a great addition to the Switch's library.
onaretrotip 3:49 You can blame Nintendo's then Japanese President for the N64's stubborn hardware, You see.... He ordered the development team behind the console to intentionally make it hard to program for as a test of Talent. If you failed to accomplish your task to develop an N64 game then you had no business being in Nintendo's presence & thus were blacklisted from working Nintendo hardware again! Yeah, he along with Sega's then Japanese President hated amateurs. So yes, Nintendo fucked themselves up once they got to Earthbound 64! 5:00 Metroid 64 was worked on & eventually released but as Metroid Prime & yes, Metroid Prime was originally intended to be Metroid 64. The only reason why we got that game is because of everyone's favorite producer at Nintendo, *Shigeru Miyamoto!* You see, he decided that a new Metroid game should be made once he visited Retro Studios for that's where he discovered that Retro had just created a brand new shooter engine & he came up with the bright idea to use it for Metroid & told both Retro & Nintendo that this engine was what Metroid 64 needed all along! So what happened next was that Retro Studios decided to make "New Metroid" play in a similar manner to Rare's Jet Force Gemini but Nintendo shot down the idea for having a 3D Metroid game play as a 2nd Person Shooter was both nothing special & out of wack for Metroid. Due to the set deadline & demands made by Nintendo, 3 other GameCube games had to get cancelled just to pump out Metroid Prime! 1 of which is known as Raven Blade which was supposed to be an open world Fantasy RPG (Like how Nintendo wanted Body Harvest to be years eariler). Since you recently did Genesis or what you call Mega Drive for a cancelled games episode, My Request for your next is either Master System or GameCube! 5:34 The reason why Echo Delta was cancelled was due to Nintendo loosing faith into the N64 & felt that if they had released the game then it would have sold poorly even if it was considered a cult classic. They felt that with the GameCube being released within a year meant the decline of older hardware & software and although they could have chosen to move it to the GameCube, they still weren't convinced that it would be worth the time & money to make, market & distribute. A real shame for this could have been a great game on any system since N64! The company that developed it, was later shut down & stripped of its assets overnight two years later by Nintendo & another Japanese company named Recruit after they saw how it was pointless keeping around to it being a leech to their profits.
onaretrotip 6:49 He was most likely cancelled by Virgin Interactive rather than the developers & the only reason why I believe they would do that is probably due to declining N64 sales in the late 90's for 40 Winks was meant to be a cross platform game for both PS1 & N64 but the latter was cancelled due to declining sale ratings a year later. 9:21 Velvet Dark is no doubt a game that didn't get far in development & was scrapped because of the demise of the N64 & the Microsoft buyout of Rare! Sure Velvet could have been moved to the Classic Xbox but Microsoft didn't seem interested.
Thanks, Mark! I was surprised by how many were cancelled too, as this 25 is just the tip of the iceberg. I think the 64DD was doomed right from the start to be honest.
I think one of the reasons why the N64DD was DOA was the fact you could only buy it off the internet and online shopping was a brand new concept back in 1996. So new in fact that almost no one really did it at the time. Why Nintendo did it is a complete mystery to me but it would have had a much better time if it was sold in retail stores like GAME in the UK where you sound like you are from (you sound British to me) or Best Buy in the US where I live. I dunno if you would agree with me or not, but it is the main reason why it did not go well from what I have heard.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Doshin the Giant going to be a 64 release, but was pushed to Gamecube for North America and EU. Kirby's Air Ride was also pushed to Gamecube, but was originally for N64. Funny how many were ported later to the cube.
Well, Doshin The Giant was released for the 64DD, so I guess when that tanked the game only made it to the West on Gamecube. Kirby's Air Ride was indeed planned for the 64 first, but moved over to Gamecube. It seems that quite a few games were shifted to Gamecube after being initially developed (or at least planned) for the N64.
Yep ...no mercy was so good...i would've loved one more wrestling game on the n64. From World Tour, Revenge, WM2000 to No Mercy, the games improved so much every time... I'm sure backlash would've been known as the best wrestling game of all time to many people like No mercy is now.
I had a feeling that there was more to the history of Star Fox Adventures. When a known franchise switches gears that dramatically, it's usually the case of "let's convert a standalone game into a known franchise" situation. Like Kirby's Epic Yarn and Mario Bros 2.
From Wikipedia: "The game began development under the name "Keito no Fluff" (lit. "Fluff of Yarn"), featuring Prince Fluff as the main character.[7] During the summer of 2009, Nintendo proposed that the game be altered and released as a title in the Kirby series, though Prince Fluff remains in the final product as Kirby's partner."
I'm surprised you didn't do the cancelled Super NES games yet, since I did find one which is a cancelled sequel to "Road Runner's Death Valley Rally" called Wile E's Revenge.
gotta luv this channel, this guy doesnt feel the need to show himself infront of a wall of games, or show off a bunch of carefully placed collectibles. keep up the good work!
Great video (and insight from the comments posted here!) I'm wondering - since you've only scratched the surface in terms of cancelled games, will you do a part 2 to this video?
Thanks, glad you liked it! Probably not, as most of the other games don't have much interesting material available, so it would just be me talking and/or speculating. There are many more systems to cover though!
Goldeneye is great, but I think Perfect Dark is better. The HD remake is even better still since it doesn't have the frame rate issues (as they were pushing the N64 to its limit).
It's just the Nostalgia factor for me, and the fact that I never actually played Perfect Dark util after the console was discontinued. I must've played GoldenEye for 1000+ hours, love that game, and still play it a lot.
Same here, I didn't play Perfect Dark many years later. I remember getting in Goldeneye the cougar magnum in multiplayer and going on a rampage. I always turned off the radar with one of the cheats then hide in exploded boxes with oddjob :).
Both were brilliant. Probably the most amount of hours I’ve spent on games. Goldeneye wins it for me tho as everyone had it so 4 player happened all the time. Perfect dark wasn’t as popular so it didn’t get as much multiplayer time. Still loved them both.
I remember seeing that Dragon Sword game in various different Nintendo magazines at the time. It looked good, I was hyped for it and then it was suddenly cancelled. I was so disappointed back then but I'm really glad I at least got to see video of it here, thanks!
Man the 64DD is just the kiss of death at the time. You get to use some really unique hardware for your game but also there is like a 50% change of your game getting can'd xD It really made no sense when it came out. Dreamcast was out and gamecube or dolphin was being teased in magazines.
While I'm kind of sad that we never got a Metroid title on the N64, I agree that the N64 controller would NOT be conducive to a grand experience with a 3D Metroid title. I think we were better off not having one for that reason alone; it would have been hated for the controls alone.
Seeing what we'd eventually got from Metroid Prime on the GameCube and during the time period that the N64 was in its prime, why didn't they make Metroid 64 into a first person shooter? Games like Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, and Half Life were incredibly popular and a Metroid game on either the Doom engine, Quake engine, or more preferable the build engine that Duke Nukem is on would been huge on the N64!
One of the ultimate games that never saw a release was Contra 64. I was devastated!!!! I remember reading an editorial from this great video game magazine called NEXT GENERATION MAGAZINE from the 90’s/early 2000’s and it discussed everything about the N64; Good and Bad. Contra 64 was only mentioned with a title screen and nothing more. After that, that was it. I held on to a glimmer of hope when two Castlevania titles came out on the N64, but nothing. However, I am so happy that games like Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Resident Evil 2 did make their debut to the N64 despite being late to the life of the console. I was worried that both games would not make it. Unfortunately, Resident Evil Zero was moved to the GameCube Nintendo. I would have still loved to have an N64 version.
onaretrotip - I would have wanted a direct sequel to Contra III: The Alien Wars for the Super Nintendo, but this time with four players simultaneously. The graphics would be a lot like the SNES characters designs and color scheme, not the SONY PLAYSTATION Contra’s and the storyline would be a continuation of sorts. Such a missed opportunity. Maybe if those Castlevanja games did well, MAYBE the Nintendo 64 would have gotten it’s very own Contra game. Another game that was only briefly mentioned in magazines was Metroid 64. Again, would have loved to have seen how the N64 would have handled that series.
That does look like GTA 64, because in the originals the camera doesn't zoom out that far, and those buildings look way taller than they do in the PS1 and PC games.
It would've been nice to have seen a Contra 64, don't understand why the Gamecube never made a contra game either. Adventure Island 64 and a Ghost and Goblins 64 would've been great too.
Awesome vid!! The N64 holds a special place in my heart, although its probably a close second or third favourite console, it’s definitely holds my most favourite games Ive ever experienced.- WOW!!.. not a fan of Ocarina?!? My most loved game of all time! Think it’s still considered the finest game of all time lol! There is definitely some awesome awesome 90% + rated games on the console but for me there is only around twenty over all. Bloody hell would of been welcoming to see some of these titles fully developed and released, so many yet again I didn’t have a clue about! Super man 64 should of been in this list! 😂 Great video my man Thankyou!
Thanks, Luke! Yeah, I just never really loved Ocarina of time like I did the previous 2D games. Link's Awakening on the Game Boy is by far my favourite Zelda. OOT came out just before my 18th birthday and I was very busy getting pissed up at the time, but always preferred GoldenEye, 1080, and Diddy Kong. Some of the games look great, what a shame. Especially Toon Panic, Rev Limit, and Dragon Sword. Thanks, glad you enjoyed it mate.
I'm sorry but I don't see how one can't like the game or at least acknowledge how influential it was. I don't mean any disrespect though, if you don't dig it you don't dig it. I think it's pretty spectacular personally, even given how dated it is. The 3ds version is probably even better though I find the original to have its own charm as well.
Trust me, there's not a single game in existence that everybody likes. I have the 3DS version as well. Visually it's great, but I got bored before I completed it so gave up.
Still disagree but I appreciate the response. You're most certainly entitled to your opinion and I still find your channel to be excellent. I do happen to think you should give it a chance though. It gets really good. ._. all the best ✌
Iain Dalby It's not terrible, it just didn't do it for me as much as the 2D Zelda games. I always found myself getting bored with it after a while. Give me Link's Awakening or ALTTP any day.
What about Shadowgate Rising? It was to be the fourth game in the Shodowgate series. It was in development at the same time as Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers which was released. The developers even made a comic book for Rising in order to promote the upcoming release. I heard that Shadowgate Rising was canceled due to the poor sales of Shadowgate 64 but I'm sure that there is more to it than that. In 1999 the company that made the Shadowgate series launched a large multi-tier campaign to promote the return of Shadowgate with several articles in gaming magazines like Nintendo Power, a Game Boy Color remake of the original Shadowgate, the release of Shadowgate 64, and the previously mentioned comic for the then upcoming Shadowgate Rising, and we'll as publishing a novelization staring the the hero of the original Shadowgate (Lord Jair) on their website that chronicled his life from youth leading up to the start of the first game. It's too bad the game was canceled in the end.
@@onaretrotip The game had its own comic book published (you can get lots of screen shots from that, plus you can find entire the comic fairly easily online). How many cancelled games have that claim to fame? Also, part of the game did live on in the 2013 remake of Shadowgate for PC. A character from the comic (that was also going to be in the game) who was a wise cracking talking skull named Yoric, becomes the player's guide in Shadowgate (2013) like he was intended to be in Shadowgate Rising.
@@ericroberts4932 Shdowgate 64 was the best atmospheric game i have ever played, sad to know they didnt release another game for the Nintendo 64. But thanks for the shared information.
Thanks a lot. lad you enjoyed it! Haha yeah that Jungle Bots is very random, and it doesn't give much away regarding what the game would have been like.
If we ever get a N64 Classic Mini (which I think is very likely), they should at least include one now completed game, just like Star Fox 2. Or maybe upgrade Super Mario 64 to have a multiplayer-mode or something like that. And even if not, it would be really awesome to get a N64-Mini and rereleased (updated) N64-Controllers with the Rumble-Pak build-in. (Games that use the Save-Pak (or what it's called), should save those Data on the console itself)
I see a reccomended video in my UA-cam feed, by a UA-camr I haven't heard of. Over 20 minutes of cancelled N64 games. I click. First thing I hear, is Grant Kirkhope music playing, with amazing game concepts being shown on my screen. I even see a comment from a developer, who helped develop games by Rare, and he talks all about Velvet Dark! Needless to say, either Banjo-Threeie (one of the only games not mentioned on this awesome list...) has been published, it is the end of the world, or I just subscribed to this channel!! (Or all 3... you never know...😞)
whoa what a fantastic video. I cant believe some of these games never made it. Rev limit looks amazing and so does dragon sword. Jest would have fit perfectly on the system.
Thanks mate, glad you liked it! Rev Limit looks awesome, that's definitely a standout title in the list. Dragon Sword and Jest definitely had potential too, and I love the look of Toon Panic.
There was a Street Fighter III port for Nintendo 64 and it was prototype found on IGN m.ign.com/articles/1997/03/27/street-fighter-iii-aims-for-64dd Capcom was planned to release Street Fighter III N64 port in Winter 1997 and was soon cancelled. Street Fighter Alpha 3 found some rumors for N64 also.
prototype? where. I've never ever heard a mention of prototype. just hearsay. SFIII wasnt super well received when first released, and at the time of this interview, Second Impact, the revision to the first version was being cranked out for october release. So if it was set for December, they would have pushed it back for Second Impact to be ported instead. but the DD was pushed back till 1999 anyway. And I just dont think a cartridge version would've worked out. so after the financial and critical failure of second impact, AND the DD. Capcom probably just didnt see the point in releasing or developing the port. There might've been talk of doing a cartridge version. but that is a big game with a high number of sprites and the basic N64 was not a 2D powerhouse and was very hard to 2D on period. I just dont think there was a real chance of it happening. I understand N64 faithful, dream about it, because the N64 had very little 2D fighter representation. But I feel like its a fallacy, empty hype.
I was waiting for you to bring up Freak Boy since the moment I clicked the play button. That game looked really awesome in the magazines, and I was pissed when it was never released.
I remember hearing once that one of the working concepts for Metroid 64 was going to be similar in design to Mischief Makers, using a 2.5-D platforming game, mostly due to the project leaders couldn't envision a full 3D game, much less the FPS design of prime.
onaretrotip still blows my mind Nintendo passed on buying rare and now they make stupid games on the Xbox. Microsoft needs to let them go and see if they still have magic in the company. Rare used to make amazing games now they seem like a shovelware company.
Doesn’t seem make out an bad game by everyone else since misrepresentation by Jontron idiocy and AGVN self titled ego stupidity. 3D Metroid will do well in N64 if Castlevania 64 was given right developers.
Mother 3 wasn't cancelled because of the 64DD failure. It was going to be in a stand alone cartridge just as other games worked for the 64DD. But they ran into more problems and multiple delays. Then finally, it was cancelled.
I'm sad that Nintendo never released a sequel to SM64. I don't know why they thought SM642 was a bad idea. I know we got the Galaxy games, Sunshine, and Odyssey, but still I love SM64 the most.
Always an interesting watch Pete. I didn't know about a lot of these. I'm kind of the same as you on the N64. Loved it back in the day, not especially fussed to play it now

Those GTA 64 screenshots, I remember back in the days reading that magazine "Hobby Consolas". It is kinda shitty nowadays but it was THE MAGAZINE in Spain during several years. I have translated into english what's written in Spanish for you guyz (11:00):
"Finally, after a lot of months after a lot of months of continued stalking, DMA Design have spoken and approved the release of an N64 version of its super violent car game, GTA.
We will go into details about GTA 64 next month."
Img1 (left):Move the camera away as much as you want and then bring it closer.
Eternal darkness was suposed to be released on N64, but ended up on GC. Great game! One of the best horror game iv'e played.
I'm yet to play it, but have heard good things.
Have you played Silent Hill at least? These are the only true horror games. Everything else is for kids
I still own it
budal15 *sniffs* I smell gatekeeping
@@budal15 You should play Siren Blood Curse or Rule of Rose.
Super Mario 64 2 would have been a dream come true for me lol. I have played the Bejesus out of SM64
I think a lot of people would've gone nuts for that sequel, Seth!
Seth Forbus sunshine was 64 2.
Didn't have a playstation and better games to play huh?
Same here, dude.. same here. Can't count how many hours I put into Super Mario 64. To this day it remains the gold standard for 3D Mario games. Everyone's going crazy for Mario Odyssey, and while it's nice, to me SM64 is still the very best.
@budal15 Y'know back in the day my local Toys R Us had kiosks for both and after playing them side by side it was no competition in my mind. Some of the PS1 games I tried were enjoyable enough but the sometimes long load times and grainy graphics didn't really help the Playstation's case.
3rd person sequel to Perfect Dark on the N64= Terrible idea.
Jason Avocado That's one cancellation for which we can be thankful.
Ideas based on capitalizing on a concept that generated success already is always a desperate stupid move, that's why your right.
@@chrispacheco8590 Rare had a great track record on the N64 though. certainly I would have trusted them with a Perfect Dark sequel.
I'm sure it would have been better than Perfect Dark Zero.
If you haven't heard, a game studio very recently had a massive success on Kickstarter to release the N64 port of 40 Winks! It faced a similar fate as some of the games in this video in that it was scrapped after the original studio got bought out, but now it will be officially released, complete in box!
Yeah, I saw that! Exciting stuff.
Definitely, Willam. I think the N64 polarises opinions more than most other consoles, but that could have easily been a different story.
Such a shame that some of these games get so far in production only to be canned at the last minute. What a waste.
However, this video wasn't a waste! Another great episode dude 😊
Indeed, some of them look really good too. Thanks, Mat! Glad you liked it.
The bit about Metroid begs the question: “What game’s didn’t make the leap to 3D until AFTER the 5th generation?” Id actually be very interested in seeing this covered by somebody.
Interesting idea!
That was brilliant - and the unlikely dropping of an F-bomb was hilarious. Well done! :)
GameHammer Classic Gaming Hahaha, that just sort of came out. Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it!
Ah, probably yes.
It might've influenced the cancellation. However, it was also supposed to be a N64DD release. Consequent to N64DD's failure, it was never released.
What about GTA on the gbc?
yeah, I mean literally the very first entry in the GTA series was released on a nintendo console lol. and the N64 had more than a few dark titles. Shadow Man for example, where you trek through hell...
I feel tomb raider 64 should have got a mention as it was a huge game back in 96-97
adam parker Hmm, maybe. I tried to veer away from games that were released on other systems.
Justify by cart use base. It’s would play similar closet like Sega Saturn graphics but fast loading time.
At least the N64 got Resident Evil 2.
Another of the games that really hurts me to not even been mentioned anymore is Gradius 64...
I still think it was just Gradius IV port, but still, a very welcome addition to the very lacking N64 library.
Anyway, very very nice video mate, you winned a new sub, you really deserve it.
Ah, wasn't aware of Gradius 64! Thank you very much, glad you liked it.
That coop footage from PD running at buttersmooth 10 fps.

That background music had me dancing like a pharaoh the whole time watching this!
Mission accomplished! Hahaha.
Interesting!
onaretrotip I meant to say Gremlin Graphics alternatively known as Gremlin Interactive who bought out DMA Design.
AzuchiGuardian there was no recession in 2008.
At 17:24 .. What song is that? It's so familiar but I can't remember what game it is from.
It's the Rainbow Road music from Mario Kart 64.
Awesome video Pete! I had no idea that many games were cancelled on the N64. I wonder what things would be like if we ever gotten the 64DD.
They didn't want to sell it...
onaretrotip can you please do cancled ps1 games
Golden Sun was conceived as an N64 game before switching development to the Game Boy Advance.
Ah, nice.
WWF Backlash was also sadly cancelled, as was a Ninja version of Resident Evil.
Ninja Resident Evil sounds amazing!

20 minutes of pure Lost Content goodness, thank you very much for this neat tread into the What-if and what could have been of the N64 Library!
Really glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much for watching!
WWF Backlash....ow my heart
:(
Yep ...no mercy was so good...i would've loved one more wrestling game on the n64. From World Tour, Revenge, WM2000 to No Mercy, the games improved so much every time... I'm sure backlash would've been known as the best wrestling game of all time to many people like No mercy is now.
@TrueSinister You said you prefer $50 dollar bills over $100 dollar bills? Strange...
40 Winks was cancelled but the game was released in 2019
Indeed. Sadly this video was made in 2017!
"Gobi's Valley" playing on the background, loved it
Thanks, Carlos!
This series is easily my favorite on your channel!
Thanks, Abbey! I'm really enjoying making this series, so glad it's being well-received.
I had a feeling that there was more to the history of Star Fox Adventures. When a known franchise switches gears that dramatically, it's usually the case of "let's convert a standalone game into a known franchise" situation. Like Kirby's Epic Yarn and Mario Bros 2.
Totally agree. You can tell straight away with Starfox Adventures that it started life as something else entirely.
What did Epic Yarn start out as?
From Wikipedia: "The game began development under the name "Keito no Fluff" (lit. "Fluff of Yarn"), featuring Prince Fluff as the main character.[7] During the summer of 2009, Nintendo proposed that the game be altered and released as a title in the Kirby series, though Prince Fluff remains in the final product as Kirby's partner."
Epic Yarn is what got me into Kirby, so I am glad they went that route
I'm surprised you didn't do the cancelled Super NES games yet, since I did find one which is a cancelled sequel to "Road Runner's Death Valley Rally" called Wile E's Revenge.
Working on it right now!
Good
Contra 64 was announced in Next Generation Magazine with just the title logo and fire. Lol! So disappointed that it was not released.
Haha what a tease!
gotta luv this channel, this guy doesnt feel the need to show himself infront of a wall of games, or show off a bunch of carefully placed collectibles. keep up the good work!
Thank you very much. I'll certainly try.
Dead or Alive 1 was also going to be planned on Nintendo 64 and didn't came to fruition which is cancelled for unknown reasons
Yeah, thought that one was a bit boring though.
Man, the idea of Jungle Bots has some serious potential. Like how pacific rim is just completely unapologetic fun.

Viewpoint 2064 got released via rom. Looks pretty good despite it not being entirely finished but as a prototype it’s pretty good.
Oh, nice!
Haha yeah, I always turn radar off too as I know the levels so well. Oddjob was always banned from multiplayer with me and my mates though.
Both were brilliant. Probably the most amount of hours I’ve spent on games. Goldeneye wins it for me tho as everyone had it so 4 player happened all the time. Perfect dark wasn’t as popular so it didn’t get as much multiplayer time. Still loved them both.
PD HD is a remaster. :)
I remember seeing that Dragon Sword game in various different Nintendo magazines at the time. It looked good, I was hyped for it and then it was suddenly cancelled. I was so disappointed back then but I'm really glad I at least got to see video of it here, thanks!
Thanks, Matthew! There's a playable Dragon Sword ROM available to download if you're interested in actually playing it.

Ban Joe Katz' Movie!
Dang, and no mention of the Addams Family pinball game, slated to be the first (and only) pinball game on the N64.
Hmm... I wonder if that's the only 90s console without a pinball game?
Man the 64DD is just the kiss of death at the time. You get to use some really unique hardware for your game but also there is like a 50% change of your game getting can'd xD
It really made no sense when it came out. Dreamcast was out and gamecube or dolphin was being teased in magazines.
It was doomed from the start. They made the right decision cancelling its release outside of Japan.
While I'm kind of sad that we never got a Metroid title on the N64, I agree that the N64 controller would NOT be conducive to a grand experience with a 3D Metroid title. I think we were better off not having one for that reason alone; it would have been hated for the controls alone.
I can only agree.
Yes, it would have gone down well I think.
Fantastic video! Also weird that some N64 games have better draw distance than several contemporary games...
Thank you! Yes, strange that. Although far less detail.
Yeah, you can't win 'em all I guess. I would have loved to have seen what they did with Contra though, to bring the series into 3D.
onaretrotip - I would have wanted a direct sequel to Contra III: The Alien Wars for the Super Nintendo, but this time with four players simultaneously.
You should see what they are doing to the series on the switch.. The trailer looks like an absolute joke!
Eternal Darkness, Resident evil 0, Ura Zelda. Just to remember other cancelled games.
Indeed. The list of unreleased N64 games is actually huge, which is a surprise considering its relatively small library.
Awesome channel man!!! This is the first I've watched but keen for more. Peace! :)
Thanks so much, Ben! Glad you like it. Pete
Surprised there is no mention of Resident Evil 0, since that started as a N64 game.
Yeah, didn't include it as it wasn't much of an interesting story to that. It was tough narrowing it down to twenty-five.
I feel like there was a bit of a leap taken to turn Vampire Circus into a Taz game.
Mellow Gaming Hahaha! I know, right.
have any of the betas/prototypes got leaked into the interweb as a rom?
Yes, a few I believe. Try searching the emulator sites (like Emuparadise).
That does look like GTA 64, because in the originals the camera doesn't zoom out that far, and those buildings look way taller than they do in the PS1 and PC games.
Ah, thanks!
What about WWF Backlash? I was really hoping they made that game to top no mercy
Wasn't aware of that one.
It would've been nice to have seen a Contra 64, don't understand why the Gamecube never made a contra game either. Adventure Island 64 and a Ghost and Goblins 64 would've been great too.
They neglected a lot of their big franchises during the N64's life it seems.
I’ve enjoyed these videos immensely and have now subscribed!

Very interesting Pete. Hadn’t heard of a lot of the titles.

Great video my man Thankyou!
That MK Rainbow Road background track took me all the way back to nostalgia...
I'm glad! :)
Rabble Rabble Rabble! You're not allowed to not love Zelda 64!
Haha. You've summed up half the comments section there, Adam! Heaven forbid people have different opinions.
That's fair enough. Thanks for the kind words and sub, Jules!
I remember reading somewhere that there was a concept for a Fire Emblem 64 DD game, but it never got past the initial planning stage.
Yes, I read the same.
Ocarina of Time “missed the mark”...what do you mean by this? Why weren’t you a fan? And what about Mario 64, Mario Kart and Lylat Wars?
OoT is a piece of shit.
No it's not. It didn't aged well, the pacing is horrible and Majora's Mask is a far better game, But OoT gameplay is still very good.
Iain Dalby It's not terrible, it just didn't do it for me as much as the 2D Zelda games. I always found myself getting bored with it after a while. Give me Link's Awakening or ALTTP any day.
onaretrotip ive never had a 2D zelda title hold my attention for more than 5 mins. Maybe im broken
onaretrotip You sir have no soul.
Didn't include it as I could only find a few screenshots.
Incredible video dude, wow! Jungle Bots...wtf is that lol!
That would be nice, but I can't see it happening.
(Or all 3... you never know...😞)
Hahaha, love this comment! I'm glad we discovered each other, Amy, and pleased that you enjoyed the video.
What song is being played during the intro? I'm assuming a Nintendo song, but which one?
Hi, Austin! It's Gobi's Valley from Banjo Kazooie.
whoa what a fantastic video.
Loving this playlist, thx for the hard work, really interesting.

Oh nice, wasn't aware of that!
prototype?
What's the song's name at 12:00
It's 'Golden Forest' from 1080 snowboarding.
I apologize for the rude comment I posted yesterday. Happy New Year, and keep up the great work!
I'm not sure what comment you're referring to, but thanks for coming back to apologise. Happy New Year to you too. I'll try, thank you :)
I was waiting for you to bring up Freak Boy since the moment I clicked the play button. That game looked really awesome in the magazines, and I was pissed when it was never released.
Joey Freeze That’s definitely an interesting looking one that was worth a mention.
I wish the robotech game was released
Yeah, I think that one disappointed a lot of people back in the day, as it was teased in magazines, etc.
Well, the rom of the prototype was released.
There was also Red Baron, which i loved to play on the Amiga 500.
Sad its been cancelled to...
Red Baron was planned for the N64? Man, I loved that game too!
Amazing keep up the good work👍.
Thank you very much! I'll do my best.
Technically it was released , but I remember when wave race was totally different and consisted in racing boats more like hydro thunder.
Oh yeah? Interesting.
Iggy's wrecking balls 2, Castlevania: revenge of the penis, South Park 2, also the final fantasy series moved from Nintendo to Sony
Revenge of the Penis?!? O_o
What, you've never heard of Revenge of the Penis? Love that game. GOTY 2008
I remember hearing once that one of the working concepts for Metroid 64 was going to be similar in design to Mischief Makers, using a 2.5-D platforming game, mostly due to the project leaders couldn't envision a full 3D game, much less the FPS design of prime.
Hmm, very interesting!
I forgot GoldenEye was made by Rare... My brain hurts now.
If it wasn't for Rare the N64 would have been a dud.
onaretrotip still blows my mind Nintendo passed on buying rare and now they make stupid games on the Xbox. Microsoft needs to let them go and see if they still have magic in the company. Rare used to make amazing games now they seem like a shovelware company.
That or let the company make stuff for other companies like sony does or like Nintendo has been doing for mobile.
Such a missed opportunity. I feel that the Rare that we knew and loved basically died when they were bought by Microsoft.
The rare you knew and loved were guided heavily by Nintendo. It’s no coincidence they were a joke once they left Nintendo.
Brilliant video pete!
Thanks, Ian!
Castlevania 64 should of took the same path as Metroid....
Possibly, yes.
Doesn’t seem make out an bad game by everyone else since misrepresentation by Jontron idiocy and AGVN self titled ego stupidity.
3D Metroid will do well in N64 if Castlevania 64 was given right developers.
Had alot of fun with Castlevania 64
Nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
Mother 3 wasn't cancelled because of the 64DD failure. It was going to be in a stand alone cartridge just as other games worked for the 64DD. But they ran into more problems and multiple delays. Then finally, it was cancelled.
Ah.
great stuff Pete, bottoms up went bottoms up then!
Thanks, Stu. Huh?
I'm sad that Nintendo never released a sequel to SM64. I don't know why they thought SM642 was a bad idea. I know we got the Galaxy games, Sunshine, and Odyssey, but still I love SM64 the most.
Yeah, really surprising that they didn't!
Dragon Sword looked pretty cool
Yeah, definitely! There's a ROM available online of that one.
I just found your channel and I love it
Thank you!
it's a real shame what happened to Dinasour Planet and Mother 3
Definitely. Dinosaur Planet looked like a really great concept before it was reskinned.
Play the fan translations of Mother 3.

didn't they make mother 3 for the disk drive?
@@Captain_Neckbeard I know it eventually launched for the GBA but it's just not the same
The Wild waters demo unfinished game (i think only 1 level) is actually out and can be played.
Awesome!
Metroid 64 canceled... well well, here we are 2019 and Metroid Switch basically canceled as well. again. =(
😢
Great video mate, some games in here I never knew about
Tomleecee Thanks, Tom! That's good news.
The first song of the video #1 hit song of all time in the middle east! Lmao giganto!
Haha you know this!!!
Always an interesting watch Pete. I didn't know about a lot of these. I'm kind of the same as you on the N64. Loved it back in the day, not especially fussed to play it now
Thanks, Andy! Glad to hear it. Yeah, there are only a couple of games that I still play to be honest.
