Bought and returned this backpack, and I have some thoughts. It is good looking and comfortable, but it falls way short of adequate in terms of interior organization, and has many form-over-function design choices. There isn't a single zippered pouch inside the backpack, so if it's not upright, your stuff is falling out. And to make matters worse, its second largest compartment is never fully sealed. Velcro wears fast, and many reviews have reported the Velcro flap "warping" over time so as to not lay flat. Also, what's with those non-stretch bottle holders? If it was 80 bucks, I'd be more forgiving, but for this price you can get way more out of something like an Osprey Nebula - an actual gray man pack - and pocket the change. I really wanted to like it, but you can tell it's more about looking like tactical EDC than being it. My girl liked the look of it, and it's got a pretty good harness system, but it fails to meet basic functional requirements of a longterm usable backpack, imo.
Hats off to whoever came up with those bright orange liners! I don't know what brand actually started doing it but my Biltwell MC bag has the orange liners and it makes a HUGE difference when you are looking for stuff.
Agree 100%. Contrast liners are such a nice quality of life thing for a pack. Not sure where it started but I've seen contrast material on the inside of Maxpedition, Vanquest and I think Hazard 4 packs. Also appears on some 5.11 packs if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the review. I bought this pack after watching it ahead of a trip to Panama. I own the Mystery Ranch 2 day pack but I wanted something smaller and lighter that I could take on the plane and then use as a day pack. It is wonderfully light weight and the water resistance worked well in light rain and boat spray. I am wearing it in close to 90 F weather and it does not get overly hot on your back. Side bottle pockets worked well and the bag holds quite a bit without having excess bulk, I found it held more than it looks like it would. The shoulder straps are very comfortable. There does seem to be space on the interior which could have had another pocket or two. The one improvement I would make (if anyone were asking) is at least one zippered interior pocket, there are none. I would have liked that for small items. There is of course a zippered pocket (unlined) at the top of the bag for your keys, etc. The zippers are nice and I like the high vis orange interior. Overall a great bag that I would recommend. Keep up the great content, the reviews continue to be accurate and very helpful.
I was attending MSU Bozeman back when Mystery Ranch was Dana Designs, and got a really good deal on a blemished backpacking pack straight from the factory floor. Later, after I got out of the Marines, I spent several years setting up a "get home bag," sort of replicating my patrol pack as an 0311. I finally settled on a Mystery Ranch 2-Day Assault pack. It isn't as Gray Man as yours, but it has the same superlative quality through and through. I carry it everywhere with me. It gets tossed in the back of various vehicles, goes on day hikes with the dogs, it goes hunting; everything I need to make it through an unexpected night out, whether that is the Jewel Basin or Cabinets in October, or just at a friends house. An EpiPen for my wife, an IFAK, batteries and charging cables, the Five Cs. My wife calls it my purse. When my friends ask, "does someone have tweezers," or whatever, they are looking at me. And yes, I usually got that. Let me open up my Mystery Ranch and get it for you. I love my Mystery Ranch. Their stuff it just solid. Comfortable. Durable. Functional. Carried mine for years now, not so much as a stitch missing, and it has seen some shit, been there, and done that.
I purchased this pack in grey thanks to your review here. I’m a believer of the “buy once, cry once” philosophy and this will replace my REI daypack I’ve been using for 20 years. Thanks for the great videos, Aaron!
Now that’s the best testing of durability I have ever seen! Lol awesome! Looks like a good bag but my wife said if I buy another she would pack me in it lol. God bless thanks always for the review.
Unfortunately I don't have an office nor do I commute around town but I do like to hike even though I don't go. Ever. Either way great video I was actually looking at these packs a while back. Then I looked over my brand-new 511 that I never use and thought I'd better not another bag
I've been wanting to try out a Mystery Ranch pack for a while now and I was almost going to pick this one up until i saw that there's no way to attach anything molle or Velcro inside. Until I find something similar to my Vertx bags, I think I'm sticking with those.
Great review and video again. Keep on doing like this, it really helps us. I never heard of this brand and just found out we can just buy it up here in Europe, With your review it gives trust in the quality of these products. Greetings from Switzerland
One but major downside: the bottles can't be secured. Normally there should be some sort of compression strap, but this is not the case. Bottles may have loops, but they are useless. And the pocket isn't deep enough to provide security on its own. I've lost a vacuum mug once and I didn't like it.
I never consider that a water bladder pocket;..not a “hiker” pack. Wouldn’t want it to either. Plenty packs out there set up for bladder geeks needs. Too many imo. Would be cool to see an elastic “ retaining/ keeper” band sewn inside the top loader. The band sized to keep a billfold/ passport etc..somewhat more secured, while your digging around in there, or if forget to zip, or to “pick-it” proof from some would be professional pickpocket gang. Idk. Just thought that when I saw you fumbling around in there. Well done, thorough review. Great durability lab testing!
I have couple mystery ranch backpacks and love the quality and materials. Just bought the 24L couple weeks ago for $55. Will use it for future travels.
Picture your pack here and instead of putting your 1st aid kit and your EDC into the pack instead you could zip your EDC pouch on the back where that pocket id and you could zip on the 1st kit to the side of the pack and had a 2nd pouch same size as your 1st aid kit to put on the other side, that additional space created i would fill with cloths for when i go on holidays or food, cooking and sleeping gear for camping.. I would customise this pack get the stitching cut open and re sewing zippers into the seams to add what i would find useful but the pack is a bit to expensive to start cutting up and changing to customise for what i would need.. If they made these packs here in Australia i would go visit them and have a chat to see if i could get a custom made pack to suit my needs, we are pretty limited to what we can do here and have to get someone with heavy duty sewing gear to cut packs up and re add the zippers to customise packs which is not cheap to do either.. A lot of people who do these youtube pages or in these circles on social media always do their custom survival knives or survival tools etc, it would be good to see someone get a back pack company to do custom back packs, travel bags and pouches that don't look military issued instead of custom knives and survival tools etc.. You come across as a practical resourceful guy who could have a custom built back pack based on a 25L or 30L pack that could have the option to zip on and off the add on pouches you use, you can have that option of zipping them onto the pack for traveling and camping to free up the internal space in the 25L or 30L main pack, or you could put them into the pack for what you would call on youtube greyman bugout bags etc.. There would be backpack companies in USA looking for input from people like yourself who have a social media following that would do custom backpacks and add on pouches etc to a pack based on input from your follower base needs or changes to back packs, etc having a base pack that you could zip on or zip off add on pouches and a day pack with a camelbak that does not look like it is military issued or has that tactical back pack look about it..
I have a couple backpacks that are still in great shape that I lightly spray-painted some dirt brown in areas that make them look "naturally" used and dirty. I think having some hobo-esque clothes, boots and equipment will make you look even more grey and not worthy of bothering with. Carry a crappy garbage bag to increase your unworthiness.
Same, idk why these gear company overlook such an important ergonomic aspect of a backpack. If you're going anywhere further than from your car to your front door you're going to need a good sturdy hip belt.
Looks good although i will stick with the type of packs i like, i have a old Rip Curl travel pack i've had for about 20 years.. It has a wet bag section made for wetsuits that i use for a water bladder or if i want a waterproof section from the rest of the pack, the whole pack is waterproof and also has the waterproof section made to carry wet wetsuits.. Best part of the pack is it's a 3 compartment 25L pack with 1 compartment being waterproof, it also has a 10L 2 compartment day pack that i can take off and use as a camelbak and day pack.. When the day pack is zipped on the 25L pack it gives me a 35L pack or as separate 2 packs i have a 25L pack and a 10L daypack/camelbak.. In your travels on the big ole wide world web have you come across any 25L packs that have a 10L pack that zips on and off the 25L pack..?? I've been looking for months trying to find something similar that does not look like a military pack and looks like like just a normal travel pack or hiking pack.. The 10L daypack is my carry bag with a 2L water bladder or what you call a EDC, then i have the 25L pack for when i am away for a few days to pack the extra gear i need, basically when i zip the 10L pack to the 25L pack i then move the water bladder from the 10L pack and put it in the wet section compartment on my 25L which is directly behind my back.. This pack here you are showing is perfect for what i am looking for as a 25L pack, it's just missing having that option of being able to zip on or off a 10L day pack that a can also use as a camelbak, when i travel i take it as a 35L pack (or when i fly 25L check in bag and 10L carry on bag for the plane), i would usually leave the 25L pack at the campsite or hotel/resort etc when on holidays or camping, then i use the 10L pack as my every day carry bag when i am holidays or camping..
Great review…Love this bag! However, I ended up with a Pat Black Hole 32L. I wish they made this exact bag with a little more capacity. The 30+ L bags they have, that are a little more discreet, are still a little more “tactical/field” looking for my travel/work needs (Blitz 35).
Looks very nice! If I can find a good deal on one, I may have to check it out, but I have an Ospery Daylite plus and a Hidden Woodsmen day ruck soooo….
I don’t feel the need for this pack because I would like a hip belt for a pack this big and I already bought a Mystery Ranch Coulee 25 on Aaron’s recommendation and love it. I have bought a few other items reviewed by him and find his reviews to be very accurate mentioning the pros and cons.
That's an awesome pack just wish it had a zip on zip off 10L 2 compartment with front pocket day pack with camelbak, same with the side pockets it had it would be good if i could zip on and off a little pouch either side so i could use 1 pouch as a removable 1st aid kit or IFAK, the other side pouch i could put snacks in or use for loose items or shower toiletry bag i could store the crap i use when showering on holidays.. I can't even find anything close to what i am looking for that does not look military issued, at this point i might have to make my own pack or convince a company to customise a pack with adding the zips on the day pack camelbak and pouches i want to add..
We’re goin on a cruise and we have 4 kids! I’ve been carrying the rip ruck for a couples years now but there isn’t enough space for me to carry enough while on vacation… Maybe this is a decent option
Isn’t it interesting how quickly we lament the absence of molle on these so-called gray man packs. Seems like dropping molle was more to save manufacturing costs than helping anyone “blend in”. “Hey we need to reduce the cost to manufacture our bags…. Hey I know!! Let’s reduce functionality and call it a feature!”.
Nice review I've seen some of your other videos finally decided to subscribe. I'm currently using vertex ready pack for my EDC/ get home bag. I have the gamut overland which I'm using for my secondary emergency bag which I'm still working on setting up .
Apologies if I missed it, but I see the District 24L but not the 28L. Is the 28L available yet or is that a typo in the video title? Thanks for the review, looks like a great pack!
I would say it’s good. Still use it and holding up well. If you pour a bunch of coffee on it it might have some staining. But kids and life haven’t made mine dirty
Do you feel that the water bottle pockets are going to hold up over time? I'm thinking rubbed against a tree or concrete wall or snagged by a branch or something?
Good question, Like all mesh water bottle pockets they may deform slightly overtime. They are usually the first thing to go but mystery ranch has a good lifetime warranty. I’ve only had one bag with similar pockets wear out and it wasn’t a mystery ranch and it took several years of really hard used to have that happen. Hope that helps.
I can’t find a good load bearing civilian style camping backpack like the Rush72 but not as obvious. I got my Rush72 and hit my limited space capacity but I have what I need for 72 hours or more.
Great Video - big fan of your Videos. Are the straps comfortable enough to carry the bag on one shoulder? -- I would do this more when I go to the office w/ a laptop- but it is a habit of mine. Thank you Sharing! Many Blessings to you and your Family! God Bless
Nice video. I have a Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 22L. The 1st generation one. Bought it a few years ago, forget about it till I saw your video. How do you feel about that bag? 😊
So much for that discount code/link. Can’t seem to find the district 24 pack on huckberry. Also in the video you said first time buyers get 15% off, but the code is for 10%. Great review but your product>consumer pipeline is 0 for 2 so far.
Hey there, so a few things going on here. First huckberry sold out the pack in about two week from the video. I am sorry they have not restocked yet. You can look at my mystery ranch home page link or backcountry.com link in the description to see if they are in stock there. Second, originally it was for 15% off, but because of some back end logistical issues and several people creating multiple accounts to use the code more than once, HB had to reissue the code and drop the percentage. I am sorry for the confusion on that end. Hope that clarifies things.
For me in 2023, every pack must have a body armor sleeve as well as a conceal carry pocket without screaming wannabe SpecOps. I want a pack that I can load out for a weekend flight so that means evnough volume for a notebook, all the required cables, two full changes of clothes, toiletries, with room to spare for all the other junk but also be functional as a daily pack and rough enough to handle an overnight hike. To many of the packs that do the above are way to tactical looking and way to few have that sleeve for a soft aromor pad.
After seeing the devastation in Turkey/Syria, I see the importance of multiple bug out bags in multiple locations, can't get my gear under tons of rubble, if I make it out at all. Could you do a video, on Earthquake Bug Out Bag please?
Looks like good quality but it's an instant no for me. These backpacks never have hip belts on them, if I'm walking anywhere further than my car to the office I need hip belts for better weight distribution. A lot of brands don't take into consideration ergonomics when designing a backpack unfortunately.
I have mystery ranch packs,I try only to buy the American made packs. They are more expensive but made better than the ones made overseas. Don't get me wrong I have a 2day pack from them made in Vietnam, its a good pack but not as robust as American made. And if shtf does happen,it won't matter what your pack looks like, just having a pack with goodies in it will make you a target.
Thanks for watching. I get MR is not for everyone, but I have loved them from the first day I bought the Scree32. The quality and ergos are hard to beat. This coming from a guy who owns, 511, goruck, camelbak, osprey, vanquest, Kelty, maxpedition and more.
@@gideonstactical Having owned Osprey packs, would you say this back panel is more, less, or equally as breathable (i.e., less sweaty back) as some of the Osprey packs with the suspended trampoline-like airscape back panels?
Is this particular pack made in USA or imported? I have an assault pack from Mystery Ranch that is made in the USA, but I know some of their stuff is made overseas
I bought my first Mystery Ranch because of an earlier review of yours, great bags. What would you prefer for a day hike, this or the 511 Amp 12 you recently discussed? Keep up the great work.
I still don’t like products that have high vis of their brand on their product. Why can’t the brand name be the same color as their outer shell?! It just screams I could be a high value target.
So why do you need a so called “grey man” pack to carry routine stuff like you have in it. I though the idea of a “grey man” pack was to hide your identity and carry your weapons without any suspicion.
Good question, Gray man theory is based on the premise of blending into a crowd or your surroundings to not attract unwanted attention. This pack offers just that. Well designed for several different circumstances and low profile at the same time. With several different low tone colors. Hope the helps.
Yep. Tactical Tailor started doin it way back in the 90s as an emergency HI-VIS signal, and they're the 1st ones that i know of.
VanQuest also does that also
I absolutely hate bright Orange liners....can easily do a softer Grey color and get the same effect
Totally agree about the lack of hydration port! Still one of the best designed packs out there.
my wife loves this bag for a diaper bag, it is high quality and the less dramatic colors offered by other manufacturers is nice for blending in
I purchased this pack in grey thanks to your review here. I’m a believer of the “buy once, cry once” philosophy and this will replace my REI daypack I’ve been using for 20 years. Thanks for the great videos, Aaron!
Awesome!! Hope it serves you well for the next 20 years
to be fair, the rei bags are pretty solid, i dunno who makes them for them but they are nice. but the colors do get loud since they're hiking packs
Mystery Ranch makes great stuff. You get what you pay for. Buy once cry once...
For sure 👍
Now that’s the best testing of durability I have ever seen! Lol awesome! Looks like a good bag but my wife said if I buy another she would pack me in it lol. God bless thanks always for the review.
Better to keep the wife happy 😅
Every decent quality backpack should have that feature.
Get the backpack. If the wife complains, go count her pairs of shoes or her make up. Get the pack.
@@gideonstactical Sticks and stones may break my bones but there’s always something a wife will be unhappy about.

That Mystery Ranch logo stands out like dogs balls and is a dead give away.

I’d bet most civilian tactical assault backpacks, you know the ones, have no EDC/tactical items in them. It’s the cool factor
Very nice pack but the lack of hip straps would be a deal breaker for me. Especially at that price.

We’re goin on a cruise and we have 4 kids!
I’ve been carrying the rip ruck for a couples years now but there isn’t enough space for me to carry enough while on vacation…
Maybe this is a decent option
I love it, with me right now
Do you prefer this pack over the Urban Assault 24? Looking for a low profile EDC backpack that could double as a bugout bag.
Yes, I prefer this for urban Edc that can also be a go bag. The assault 24 is good too but kind of cumbersome in and out of every day Carry.
Cool pack! I might check out their 18 liter.
Nice review I've seen some of your other videos finally decided to subscribe. I'm currently using vertex ready pack for my EDC/ get home bag. I have the gamut overland which I'm using for my secondary emergency bag which I'm still working on setting up .
Thanks for the sub and welcome to the GT family. I am test the Overland right now for an up coming review.
Stil loving my Mystery Ranch pack after 3 years! 👍
Awesome! They are excellent
I work in an office and it would not be a good idea to seem Tactical at all... my edc pack was a maxpedition but I'm rethinking it at this point
This would be excellent if the layout is what you need.
Apologies if I missed it, but I see the District 24L but not the 28L. Is the 28L available yet or is that a typo in the video title? Thanks for the review, looks like a great pack!
Yes, it is thank you for catching that!
I like the Hummus color. Can you speak to whether it stays clean or not? Looks like it survived the torture test! Thanks for the vid.
I would say it’s good. Still use it and holding up well. If you pour a bunch of coffee on it it might have some staining. But kids and life haven’t made mine dirty
Another winner from MR - and it passed the boy test! Thanks for the review.
You bet, thanks for watching!
Looks nice but no port for a water bladder would be a no for me for $165
I can’t find a good load bearing civilian style camping backpack like the Rush72 but not as obvious.
God Bless
Yes, absolutely the way the shoulder straps are cut they contour well. There is a shot of me doing that at the last min of the video.
Well that's one way to get the little ones to bed early lol
Nice video.
I have a Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 22L. The 1st generation one. Bought it a few years ago, forget about it till I saw your video. How do you feel about that bag? 😊
I am not familiar with that model, but most of their packs rock!
@@gideonstactical thanks for the reply. Keep making great videos. ✌🏾
Just got an urban assault on sale but this one may be a better fit for a flight bag...
Good 70l backpack with clam shell opening for review?
Looks very interesting. I'm using the Vertx gamut 2.0 as my EDC greyman pack it's 👌 but I would like another 5litre more space.
Right on! This is similar to that but Better yoke
Great video!! Looks like a nice pack overall.. but velcro kills it for me. Thank you for the detailed review.
Glad to help and that you enjoyed it
For me in 2023, every pack must have a body armor sleeve as well as a conceal carry pocket without screaming wannabe SpecOps.
Greatest durability test ever!
This or the catalyst 26? Thanks!
The district 24 FTW
@@gideonstactical love it dude! Thanks for the reply. Going to order one
I'm not a big fan of MYSTERY RANCH, but after seeing this I will go for it.
Hope it serves you well.
After seeing the devastation in Turkey/Syria, I see the importance of multiple bug out bags in multiple locations, can't get my gear under tons of rubble, if I make it out at all.
Could you do a video, on Earthquake Bug Out Bag please?
I think you might have violated child labor laws 😂 great video
Looks like a nice back! I like your wallet! Which one is it and how many cards does it hold?
I can’t see it being $75 better than my North Face Borealis. Decent looking bag though
Blows the doors off
Looks like good quality but it's an instant no for me.
I'm thinking about the district pro
Very nice 👍
What admin pouch are you carrying on the front if you don’t mind me asking
ua-cam.com/video/ev7HJDKo_sI/v-deo.htmlsi=He65EuPBq6B3jSo7 here is the video on it!
Mystery ranch or vertx? Which is better quality?
I would put them on the same level in quantity of materials. I have found Mystery Ranch to have better more comfortable yokes and shoulder straps.
@@gideonstactical Thanks I've been debating for a while!!!
Great video bro. I am not a fan of mystery ranch. Too expensive for what you get. A 24ltr pack for almost 200$. That's insane..
I like that bag! Great revieww.
What / where did you find that med kit and the smaller gray bag also?
What’s the little extra front pouch on the chest strap?
I think you mean the little shock cord??
@@gideonstactical at 34 seconds in
Like the watch what make is it?
Garmin Instinct
Curious about the orange med kit you pulled out. Link please?
Looks like a Vanquest small sticky cube
@@waterdragon95 I think you’re right. Thanks brother.
No covered water bottle holders. No molly webbing.
Yes, that’s the point you LARPer
Yes, that’s the point you LARPer
Needs better breathing channels on the back and a belt strap with a beaver tail option
In a total survival Situation, the grey man will be the first target
If they are doing it right no they won’t. Because know one will know. If they are spotted they have failed.
Is this particular pack made in USA or imported? I have an assault pack from Mystery Ranch that is made in the USA, but I know some of their stuff is made overseas
This one is overseas produced, but still excellent quality
@@gideonstactical Thank you!
Is the the ice rink in downtown Parker?
Who makes that amazing orange hoodie? Looking sharp!
It’s a USA made flint and tinder. Love it, also on huckberry and the promo code will work on it too! 👍
Thx for sharing ^^ , hello from France 😘
Thanks for watching!
It's only missing a place to hold some body armor. Then it would be perfect.
Trust me, you must review some Helikon-Tex bags 🤟👍
They make good stuff too
Could you make a review on MR Fire Shift SC Pack, please?
I bought my first Mystery Ranch because of an earlier review of yours, great bags. What would you prefer for a day hike, this or the 511 Amp 12 you recently discussed? Keep up the great work.
The 511 amp 12 is a good all around arounder, but the MR will be more ergonomic
Does anyone know if the laptop sleeve can fit Alienware m18 2023 ?
Not sure. Don’t have that computer
Kifaru and mystery ranch ❤️
Looks good!
every reviewer needs to use the "People's elbow" test
Hahaha
Too bad they don't make a 30 or 35L in this model.
is that 11 or 12.9 ipad pro?
Promo code is not working with Huckberry
Great review
Thanks for watching
It’s just a term stupid people use because it’s trendy
