By FAR, the Best Travel Bag (& it's not even close)

- I travel at least 100 days a year and have been for about a decade; as such, I've tried SO many bags and luggages, and in this video I share why this is, by FAR, the best carry-on travel bag and it doesn't even come close (from all the backpacks I've tried so far).

Given that both the 45L and 35L both fit into international and domestic cage-testers, I recommend the 45L for MOST people since it's better to have the space and not need it, than to wish you had a bit more space. People who are shorter than 5'5" (165 cm) might lean towards the 35L - NOT because of any functional difference - but rather, because of a potentially slightly awkward appearance.

A quick note for those who have a 16" Macbook Pro (M1 of later). Although the 35L fits the 16" laptop in the central padded sleeve, the Macbook Pro specifically requires a bit of fiddling with the flap-cover. If you have a 16" Macbook Pro and want the smoothest in and out, the 45L is definitely the one for you.

When you are packing for a trip, really spend some time to "imagine" your day to day activities as you go through your itinerary. This will really help inform what to bring, and just as importantly, where to pack them depending on variables like frequency of use, how fragile things you bring are, and of course, how expensive things are to replace which would motivate you to store those items more securely.
6:33 - Category 3 or 5
Even if you don't use this bag, it's good practice when packing for travel, to always have a pouch of the most frequently used items that pack right at the top so you never have to go digging to find those items that you often have to reach for - items like phone chargers and power banks are of course the first that come to mind, but depending on your preferences, pack with intentionality to make things more streamlined.
7:22 - Category 4 of 5
By nature of using a carry-on-only bag, you're already taking a big step in securing your things. Checked luggage can get lost or tremendously delayed (especially if you have any transfer flights). There are many options to keep your things secure, but one of the most effective ways is to simply introduce one barrier that will make your bag even a TINY bit more difficult to steal or pickpocket. You don't need to turn your bag into a vault - you just need thieves to perceive your bag as more difficult that other bags near you. TSA approved combination locks are an absolute JOKE for anyone who is determined to break in, but I use them because they're enough to deter most pickpockets to target someone else without any barriers.

Bro, the bag is $457. Unless you are a person who travels for work all the time, the price does not make sense.
bro is trippin
never thought i’d be so interested in this type of content, but everything about this is brilliant..interesting, well-researched and well-explained, entertaining, and informative; grateful
Thank you SO much! My engineer husband travels internationally and this will make the perfect Christmas present. The Travelers Notebook was a big hit so I trust your judgement. 🤗
Love hearing about convenient, throughtful products and you always bring them to us - thank you!
Dude, your presentation tempo is quick but perfect because of your stellar organization of items being presented and your higher tempo compliments your clear, well-toned voice. 🙏🏻🇨🇦.
wow, your preparation and execution on these videos is best-in-class...well done! this bag has been on my short list...waiting for a couple new releases from other brands before pulling the trigger, but so far, this is in the lead...thx again!
Damn these are some nice updates! I've loved my V1 Pakt backpack for the last two years on several trips. Full depth front compartment, improved comfort, and the redesigned back security compartment are all tempting improvements.
One HUGE problem with Pakt. Shipping to Europe for me was set to 75 dollars. That's insane.
So I chose another travelbag.
They must lose tons of customers with that type of shipping
Lol. Someone paying $325 for a travel backpack is complaining about shipping. Sure, they should have made the price $499 and free shipping - lemmings would have eaten it up and asked for seconds.
@@Michael-iw3ek $499 is far greater than $325
@@creatomayhem4395 To those who pay these kinds of prices it won't matter.
For me it is a problem as well. I wanted to purchase it, but with that shipping cost to Europe a no go for me as well. And I bought some other bags out of the US with same pricetags and far less shipping costs.
What did you get instead?
This bag is as amazing as the way you present it. Nice work.
I LOVE the details and how you pay attention to them! Thank you for the great videos!
Thank you so much! As somone who drives for work and ministry often, it's great to have a bag where I can fit both lifestyles in it! I will eventually begin travel nursing too and have been looking for the best luggage/backpack. I appreciate your work ethic and depth of knowledge
I was really sceptical about the “youtubee” title of the video but my God this was one of the best bag review videos on here. Well done.
I loved the focus on our clean and tasty water. We really appreciate it.
Great travel purchase recommendations. I binged on several of your videos related to travel and Japan. Big thanks for the well thought out script, call outs and fun visuals. I am impressed and very appreciative. Am not an EDC adept as I love curating my designer handbags but this PAKT 35L is very tempting for my 2024 escapades. Also just bought the Cipway cubes. Can't believe I don't have a set.
Mille merci pour vos astuces. Continuez d'être inspiré et surtout bon voyages.
Awesome review! I've not traveled from a single bag but i'm beginning to see the benefits. My goal is to learn how to best do it and then share it with my wife & children. Thanks for taking the time to share this!
Awesome video and review. Got recommended this video and is my first time watching one of your videos. You had me sold on this backpack and went straight to the site to buy one, saw the price and went straight off that website 🤣🤣. Thanks for the roughly 15mins of excitement
I have the V1. I love it. I think this gave a pretty good look at all of the clever upgrades too. I would happily grab the new version if something were to happen to my current one. Side Note: it really seemed like you were speaking very quickly, but you articulated very well and I had no problem following along or understanding you. Great job all around!
As always your attention to detail is incredible. I so appreciate that you think of things I wouldn't. You've helped me make many smart purchases.
This bag looks amazing. My husband and I travel with a single carryon shared between us with our own personal items. This leaves us an additional carryon for the return flight in case we buy something at the destination.
Best carryon for me has been Tumi Alpha 3 international expandable carry on. I think the newest one is Alpha x but they are the same. Just different color. It’s not a cheap one but the quality is superb. Mine looks practically new after 300+ flights.
Great review on this bag. I’ve been searching for a new backpack for a while now and I keep coming back to this one. Your review explains and demonstrates the reasons why it’s a good bag better than anyone else. Very thorough. Thanks
Great. I'm new to your channel. I travel plenty and have been obsessed over the years with finding the perfect travel backpack for 1 bag travel. I've used various Tortuga travel backpacks, along with a smaller pack inside the big one. You covered it all, thanks.
I am in love with the 35L backpack and 15L everyday bag. These will come in handy for our trip to Japan later this year. We are determined to do carry-on only for 3 weeks. Thank you for an excellent review.
There are many lighter weight (while empty) backpacks that offer similar features. As you mentioned this one is 2kg (4.4lbs) which is 28% of your carry on weight limit (7kg/15lbs) before you even pack it! And yes, Ive had my carry on weighed before boarding many times, especially in Australia and all over the world. If you're lucky they might not ask but I have had to check bags in the past that exceeded their carry on weight. I'd advice caution if using this bag
I have the Aer TP3S (3.79lbs empty) and was able to go on multiple international and domestic flights without it being weighed (was 14lbs loaded) but it was too heavy for me despite the padding, sternum strap and load lifters.
Will be getting the dragonfly ultra and just minimize my packing list.
@@therainbowpoopp consider some of cabinzeros bags. I haven’t bought one but yeah looking to solve this same issue of overweight over featured backpacks
Maurice obviously likes a bag with lots of organization (pockets, compartments, dividers, etc.) made from fairly durable (heavier) fabric. Of course it's all about tradeoffs. As you say much lighter bags exist, and those bags will have fewer "organizational features" and, or lighter fabric or will be lower capacity. This is all individual preference. But having said all that, my preference is also for a lighter (less than 3 lbs) bag.
I agree, I also prefer more lightweight bags! :)
Agree and that heavy unpacked weight should impact comfort, one of his categories
Great video, could not agree more that this is one of - if not the best - travel backpack out there. I have an Aer Travel Pack 2 and I’m envious of some of the features
I've journaled my whole life - since my teens. Never thought I would find something I actually need to check out: the Traveller's Company notebook system.....im in my early 60w one you have a new subscriber. G
My next bag because of you, your experience with it and recommendation. Thank you 🙏🏼
Wow I think I found the bag I’ve been looking for! I recently got back from a trip and realized I needed a better backpack..and this is it! A mixture of a backpack and a carry on. Thank you!
Being able to stow the straps away is also great for placing the bag neatly into the overhead storage areas of planes and trains or if you need to put it the baggage compartment of the airport or sightseeing bus.
I saw this bag on the video you posted travelling with your Mom. I love it! The clamshell feature sold me! Admittedly, I have a bag addiction and this feeds right into it! Great review!
Enjoyed the video! Great breakdown of the bag's features. This looks like one to get.
Great review. I'm inpressesed with your presentation of information. Thorough and consise!
I used to do backpacks only. I got older and overtime my back started hurting. Had to switch to roll away carryon luggage and never looked back. back feels soo much better also. It was fun while it lasted when I was younger and no back problems...lol
I love the insides and the clever tsa pocket!
Maurice, I love your vids man, but you gotta review stuff that is more affordable more often. This bag is dope, but its priced beyond its value for most of us who only fly a few times per year. The video is interesting, but there is a sense of foreboding that hangs over the video with the price. I want to buy things you recommend because I trust your experience, but your value for money vs my value for money dont add up and it feels like we're completely out of touch. In addition I think its unrealistic to not include price/ value for money as "the only 5 categories that matter".
But he isn't someone who travels a few times a year. And affordable for whom? I think it is unrealistic to expect his "value for money" to align with all his viewers. If you can't afford it, scroll on.
@@lw1405the guy literally says “the only 5 categories any traveler cares about” so yeah I expect it to be aligned with mine.
I had that same feeling about the travel clothing he suggested. I'm sure they are great but need affordable options also.
You sound broke and insecure. There are plenty of us who can afford this bag and reviews like these are valuable. Move on if it’s doesn’t apply to you. He shouldn’t have to change his reviews to fit your specific income bracket.
@@cornellcornell1 bruh you are insecure if you need a 300€ bag just to travel 😂 I’ve been all around Europe with a 20€ decathlon bag.
I have the evergoods CTB and i enjoy it a ton, but this is a very compelling argument for a great travel bag. I may pick up the 15L everyday bag as an addon to my current setup!
This looks absolutely amazing! I do 1 business week (4-5 days) travel and have been taking a 26L backpack. Would love a little more room and organization, this looks perfect!
How were u surviving 4-5 days with only 26L of space?
@@TheRaghav12345678910 Thin tech clothing and a hand wash/hang dry session in the hotel room.
For me there is a number 6 - that you can stow away the straps so it only looks like a backpack when you are using it as a backpack
So I own the AER Flight Pack 3 for trips up to 1 week and the Tom Bihn Techonaut 30 for 1-4 weeks
I’ve had the original Pakt One and I absolutely love it. I’ve just picked up one of these for a trip to California early next year. Hoping all I’ll need it this but if not I still can bring my Pakt One.
great video. incredible walkthrough and the editing to show everything you are talking about is sweet. Love you are a Toronto guy. This bag is great just for the daily it looks like. I've been considering the patagonia MLC (45l i think) and it reminds me of it. but this one is really good with all the quality in the build and well thought out. really well done.
I am a die hard Peak Design fan but this review has won me over!
The best pack review delivery ever and a damn good pac
I have never seen a video that explains it in such detail❤
I am very impressed with your review. I went to the website and they are even offering a 15% discount. In spite of that , the bad would be very expensive for a casual traveler like me.
If you want some padding on the day pack straps, there are fairly inexpensive padding options that are sold for car seat belts. I used them for other backpacks before and they work great.
Great tip, thanks. I also put a large bubble wrap envelope into the back of mine for cushioning 😊
That TSA metals pocket? GENIUS.
Another excellent video! Always very informative and entertaining! Love your content!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
For Canadians the MEC Outpost 35L whilst not nearly having the number of pockets or modularity is a also a solid contender for travel pack, it's seems to be a diluted Cotopaxi 35L and the pricepoint is more reasonable for those in looking in that bracket.
Fantastic review precise and to the point great job man 😊
Switzerland citizen here! Glad you loved our tape water! It is because our many lakes and icemontains (sorru dont know the same of the glacier in english 😅). 😊
I am newer to your channel and your videos but the way you lay out information and how you film these are incredible. I was pretty on board with the bag till I saw the price ha ha it's a bit out of my budget but if I am ever traveling I'll have to consider it because an easy but effective travel bag makes a massive difference and I am not too opposed to spending a lot on good bags. The most I've spent is about 225 bucks so this is still a bit more but that other bag has done me very very well and I got it on sale for 180 so after tax and shipping not too bad.
Lol, I understand the water comment. We are fortunate to live on basalt rock and our well water is something else. I make sure to have a big bottle of it with me wherever I go.
Your video actually makes me excited to pack! And just in time - we're leaving Buenos Aires for Montevideo in a few days.
VERY good video, thanks so much for the review!! I've been considering Pakt, and I think this video may have decided it for me.
Generally 7kg carry on allowance here in Asia, with this bag you've got a large 45l capacity but only 3.5kg spare once you put in your laptop. Nice as it is smaller and lighter is more practical forme dealing with weight restrictions and carrying even minimal photo gear.
Just bought one a few weeks ago...I concur.
Your videos are so well made. A 35L is actually the top bag on my travel wish list. Thank you for the giveaway!
I am not sure if this is the bag for me, cause I somehow look for a hybrid bag for EDC as well. BUT you did a tremendous job reviewing the bag. Probably thr best I've ever saw and I've seen many!
Not only what to present but also how to present
Love your videos man. I love my Tom Bihn bags and never thought about switching until my son told me that all those zippers makes me give off "serious old man vibes." Watching your video gave me pause to go down the Pakt rabbit hole.
using old as an insult is ageism. keep the bag u like and set a good example
I feel like a bag would definitely be easier to tote around than a big suitcase, which I feel only does well on airport floors. Love the video!
I kickstarted the Chase Reeves Pakt travel backpack and I’m THRILLED with the product! I am now a diehard, one bag traveler!
Bro, you convinced me! I ordered one yesterday. I was hesitant bc I have a 7 day trip coming up in Japan at the end of the month and was scared it wouldn’t be big enough to pack 7 days worth of clothes and gear…. But I also watched the vid you of both you and your mother traveling out of the same bag and was convicted haha. I’ll let you know what I think about the bag after the travel!
A really awesome tech accessory i recommend to people (Id love to see it featured in a video too) is called the Kable Card, has charging adapters and spots for a sim tool and microSD and nanosims in it, and incredibly slim
I can think of many bags I would choose before this one that meet all of the criteria you mention more effectively. Any of the similarly sized bags from Tom Bihn, Pacsafe, Aer, or Peak Designs not only have more features, are more lightweight, have better build quality, and costs less than this bag from Pakt. I love what Pakt is trying to do but their technical execution is subpar relative to the main competitors at the same bag volume and price point.
I'm going to disagree with you on the Peak. I have the 30L Peak and it's wonderful but the vertical opening method just isn't a really great way of living. Too often I need to find a larger than normal area to open it up. The one small top opening really isn't enough either.
That's only an issue on the 30L version. The 45L version (which you can compress down in the 30L range if it's not packed full) doesn't really have that problem because you can open it multiple ways.
2kg is way too heavy for a carry-on backpack. Especially if you are trying to meet the carry-on weight limits of many airlines of between 7-10kg.
Tom Bihn makes 30L and 45L travel bags that don’t exceed 1.4kg.
@@Jack-it7jy I think there is no perfect backpack. I also have the 30L Peak Design and love it although if it didn't have the laptop compartment on the opening side, it would have been almost perfect for me.
Yup. We moved to Switzerland 11 years ago, and now tap water in most other places has been rendered almost undrinkable. :)
When traveling and going carry-on only, I use a 45l Incase clamshell duffle bag that they no longer make. It doesn't have the versatility of this Pakt but it's got plenty of volume thanks to it's rectangular shape and squared off corners. It's saved me plenty of times from being forced to check my bag in since I've been able to squeeze it into an overhead compartment that was "full". Frankly, there should be a lot more enforcement of carry-on sizing because when you're group 3,4 or 5 there should still be some room for luggage but group 1 and 2 rolled into the plane with their hard sided Away luggage which takes up all the overhead. But it's not all the fault of other travelers as a lot of blame can be put on the airlines as well. Creating subclass fares and not overhauling the overhead bins has caused major headaches too.
The biggest problem is the people in Zones 1&2 put BOTH their carryon & personal item in the overhead bin. That’s selfish. Personal items should go under the seat in front of you and the space in the overhead bins should be cubbies that are labeled with your seat#. The airlines could fix this but they won’t. I travel carryon only and hate it when my luggage gets confiscated & “checked for free.”
@@jam_is_jammin I just came back from Orlando last week and jumped on an earlier flight than I was booked. Thanks to my soft sided duffle, I was able to avoid checking it in. But sure enough plenty of people put their backpacks and coats up in the overhead when it should be at their feet under the seat.
Love your vids - thanks for the content.
It costs like $375 US. It might be the best, but I can get almost as good for a lot less with the Osprey Farpoint 40, which I have.
I was really excited by this bag but what hurts is the sticker shock. 09-MAR-2024 35L $451 CAD and 45L $479 CAD
I mean don't get me wrong this bag looks amazing but the cost makes it hard to be a good replacement for my 2010 Osprey Porter 46
YO, this just randomly appeared on my feed so i watched it. This is quite impressive. I think one other thing I would want is the ability to unattach the middle divider where the laptop goes and place it in front or the back as well. Sometimes having the option for larger bulkier items has been beneficial and I've been using peak design stuff because that has given me the best versatility, however, that middle divider is something I also have enjoyed in other bags..
Cool idea! We'll keep this in mind for future releases.
Watched all your videos on the Pakt Travel Backpack V2 and think it's a fantastic solution. I'm usually a duffle + backpack person for shorter trips, where the backpack has all my electronics and things I'd want on the airplane and then I can toss my duffle into whatever bin is open. I've also watched your review of the Alpaka Bravo Sling, which seems like a perfect pairing to this. I'm assuming yes, but can you easily put an empty Bravo sling into the expandable slot? That way, still one bag on the plane, but you have a carry-around bag once you're at your destination.
Always love your videos. Gotta check this backpack out.
I feel like I have done serious research after your vids, even if I don’t get the exact same product - I know what to look for
I prefer the YOREPEK Travel Backpack. It's a good size, tough, and has a built in USB setup for a power bank. I did add a cross strap to it for better fit. I've used it on a number of trips both local and overseas and it's worked great. I use storage cubes to help organize the clothing and the side, exterior pockets are good for shoes. It also has a cross strap to attach it to luggage with collapsible handles. And, it's only $28 vice $325!!
I was skeptical at first, but now I'm sold!
I've been researching the perfect backpack for me. Because I'm weird and details matter, I've always felt like backpacks fell short. But this.... This is the one. I just wish that the little compartment on the bottom was at the top instead so that I have easier access.
$350?!? Nevermind.
Haha I was the same way
Thank you so much for introducing this bag as I never heard of this brand. It does seemed like the perfect bag. It seems difficult to find a bag without using those waterproof zip with coating which starts to pill over time, loses its function and looks horrible. It also has a ok looking logo. I know. I’m very picky and I found a lot of bags out there got an ugly logo… and I love the fact that this bag also got a hidden pocket! I don’t know why it’s so hard to find similar design.
For me there is a number 6 - that you can stow away the straps so ot only looks like a backpack when you are using it as a backpack
So I own the AER Flight Pack 3 for trips up to 1 week and the Tom Bihn Techonaut 30 for 1-4 weeks
Actually, for wheeled luggage, the July Lightweight is 3.9 lbs and Lightweight expandable is 4.9 lbs. Plus Heys has some well under 7 lbs too.
I've been obsessed with this bag since I first saw it xD I love the blue, its so nice. One day it will be mine (gotta save them pennies)
dude, i love your videos, super informative
Very nice review. I have the Aer travel pack 3 and it is 35 L. Sometimes it could be nice with the extra 10 Liters, so this if maybe a good choice.
Was very excited and elated to say this amazing travel backpack. Watched the video to the end not worrying about the price cause it’s a “backpack” was sorely mistaken. I didn’t even know backpacks could be that expensive. FYI $325 for 35L
to be fair, this is more like a patagonia blackhole bag sort but it is even then $150 more than the blackhole bag
I do totally agree with @SuJuYoon. Very expensive for what it is. I would have LOVED to have this for my travel but once converted to AUS$ it’s over $500. Unfortunately it’s out of my reach! 😢
Simcard removal tool = earring back. The loopy ones that hang.
The bag looks good and the review was showed everything I needed. The price is a bit high and the comments got me comparing other bags they use. Thanks
Love this! I've done my share of one-bag-travel experiments and trips, and I must admit I'm not a big fan of backpacks. Too much schlepping. That said, I carry A LOT of tech items with me, and I travel long-term (usually 3 months/trip on average), so I usually need a full carry-on case of some sort plus a full personal item bag for my tech/miscellaneous stuff. (Team carry-on only here).
And if I use a 40L carry on backpack as my "luggage", then I'm relegated to the 2-backpack strategy; big one on the back small one on the front - which I detest for so many reasons.
But I love these Pact bags! Got any suggestions for a long-term traveler?
I am currently on the hunt for the perfect carry on backpack so this video could not come at a better time. Love the detailed information and your input. This is definitely going on my list.
I would love to also know if you have had any experience with the Matador Globerider45 travel backpack and how it compares to this bag.
Thank you @plumairalbannach8492 I will have to look into the Aer packs as well then
$325 plus shipping. I got a nice 4 wheel prem bearings roller and a small to med laptop and cam bag for half. I'm sure it's good. Just can't justify twice the price for my use. If anything gets weak in the straps, it's not hard to reinforce with stronger sewing
I see that SSK001. I have the 003 and hope you’re enjoying yours as much as I’ve been loving mine
Oh man, this is my first time on your channel, I came for the review, but that butterfly knife moment was friggin' fantastic. :D
halfway through and I'm sold. something about my peak design duffle makes it uncomfortable to carry around in airports so having a backpack that would fit the same purpose/size would be great
i do like the fold out design
It looks like a great bag in either size, I favour the smaller, but the one issue I have is that it lacks security features like those found in Pacsafe bags. I have gone "all in" with Pacsafe and have a 40 Litre, a 10 Litre, and a fanny-pac...they're all slashproof and have hardware that lends itself to deterring thieves which make for a much more secure time traveling.
Zero cabin 44L, only 760g, and cost 74 euro, i got one. Only 2 gripes, does not have side bottle mesh pocket, and no support waist belt. They do have one with these mentioned features, at 42l and 130-160euro, 1.4kg.
Great Video review Maurice, when its times to replace my farpoint 40 this will be the one.
The Pakt has great features, but I'm sticking with my Peak Designer 45L Travel Backpack. I've traveled to three continents with it and it survived a monsoon, Saharan sand and heavy smoke from wildfires. I like how the Travel Backpack's straps can tuck inside a flap to avoid snags in transport. And the subdivider compartments are accessible on both sides of the bag. Plus it has two water bottle slots. My only complaint is the snap buckles to slim the profile down are essentially useless. One broke after a year of use, but Peak Design replaced the entire bag with a new one under warranty.
Super helpful video! It is March 19 2024 and the bag is sold old in all colors and sizes - hopefully it will be back soon! thank you!
I love this!!! Will def consider it! Psst: I challenge you to SunWing "acceptable measurements" for under the seat😆. It took me a while... they are even smaller than Ryan Air and other taxi-type commuter planes - 9 x 11 x 5 inches (23 x 28 x 13 cm). I also noticed recently (Apr 2024) diff airlines are starting to get picky about "extra" things that some of us have been doing, like a pillow filled with clothes, or a zippered pouch around the waist. (tip: be sure you can stuff it into your personal bag or carry-on) Thanks, this was so informative! Excellent video. (I guess the company agrees, because they are SOLD OUT.)
10:21 hello from Jakarta Mourice! Thank you for this video review. This backpack really amazing!
Fantastic review. I have often looked at the Pakt backpack. I'm going to see if they have any Black Friday sales and get one! You've made a subscriber out of me with your incredible review vlog.
Looks interesting and well designed. Thanks for your thorough review. I have a few questions if you happen to read this months later - or someone else who owns one...
- How is it holding up after months of use?
- Will either size bag fit under an airline seat, at least when not fully expanded, or do I need to stick with the day pack for that?
- How is the water resistance, would you rely on it for walking in the rain for an hour or so or does it need a cover?
- finally at $300+ it's a bit spendy, what's your closest alternative that's in the $200 or less price range?
