Chris Tang here! More context for reference: The "Cosmic Fantasy" arcade 'game resort' was Nihon Telenet's first and only attempt to create a location based amusement franchise - them being the parent company of Laser Soft, Wolf Team, Renovation, and Riot - developers of games like Cosmic Fantasy, Valis, Final Zone and Exile. ...and of course Renovation Products which was their North American division - which makes it apparent why they used characters from Dino Land on their branding. One of my favorite things was that the arcade had the legendary Sega R-360 back when they opened - and even let you win $10 in tokens if you could beat the high score of the week. They progressively lost their deluxe expensive cabinets, with only redemption and fighting games left, till they closed down in 1994-1995. I love that the arcade will get to live on, documented in this amazing video! Thanks Johnny!
I see LRG is releasing a physical copy Cosmic Fantasy 1&2 Collection for the Nintendo Switch TOMORROW! I’m so glad I found your video cause I had NO IDEA about this series at all! Thanks for another great video!
I love waking up on my only day off and having a new video from you. I love your work man, your videos have been putting a smile on my face for years and years.
Cosmic Fantasy Collection releases in 13 hours on limited run for switch! I am jacked up excited to finally play Cosmic Fantasy 1 in English I have played all of them but cannot wait for the release of collection 2 with Cosmic Fantasy 3 and 4 finally in English all is right in the world lol. Love your video and glad to see other who loved this series
Makes me realize how much I miss that old anime art style. Glad to see a review in this format again; been missing them as well! Thanks for sharing these gems!
7:56 Since January 2020, All of Telenet Japan’s video game IPs and all of the games they released under different publishing labels (Wolf Team, Laser Soft, Riot/Renovation Games, etc.) are now owned by Edia Corporation. Just recently, Edia announced that they are going to release the Telenet Shooting Collection for the Nintendo Switch through Limited Run Games.
Not only did you talk about a game series that is dear to my heart, you got help from awesome people like Gaijillionare and the amazing Chris Tang who is amazing at everything. I would LOVE to see you talk about Far East of Eden again but in this format! 😃😍
You really have one of the best channels on youtube. Thanks to everyone involved. Seeing the arcade being another store now and seeing those old photos reminds me of my kid days playing arcade machines in bars with Metal Slug on them. What a time to be alive.
I’m one of the 100% who bought Cosmic Fantasy 2 lol, while I don’t have my Turbo Grafx 16 with the CD attachment or a Turbo Duo anymore I still have my original copy of CF2. I remember enjoying the game so much that it led me to import CF3 which I only was ever able to play using a printed out walkthrough off of the internet later on. Good times!
When you said this was 26 years ago I thought "damn that's AGES ago. I can't even imagine being alive back then." Then you said 1992 and reminded me that I am, in fact, 26 years old... Very interesting video! It was unusual hearing you do voiceover. I'm currently discovering the lunar games thanks to you but it seems like I'll have another rpg series to check out afterwards!
Love the new format man. :) all I can say is relax and let the points roll out like your off cuff videos. let the script inform the topic as apposed to just right up reading it. since it comes across as a read. :) Cheers! Been a fan for years
Happy to see you happy Johnny! I love your videos and always look forward to them, even if they’re about something I’m not necessarily interested in or even know about. I just love watching and listening to you talk about the things you love and how passionate you are about your hobbies. Keep up the great work man!
Liked and shared already. Now it’s over to watching. I love these old series retrospective reviews they are always quite interesting. Edit after watching: this was amazing! Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Agreed 100%. The retrospectives of old niche franchises is one of the reasons I got into watching his content. Felt a little nostalgic, as if I was reliving those moments of his looks back on Ys and Phantasy Star. It may sound cheesy, but I like the passion Johnny brings into anything he talks about. Makes me smile seeing that.
Michael Cycle I feel exactly the same way as you. Johnny’s passion fills me with joy and makes me feel like a part of the experience (might sound weird I know). This is honestly my favourite gaming channel right now and I love his movie channel as well. (Check out the Alladin review if you haven’t, it’s great).
Telenet was essentially becoming what would become Tri Ace near the end of the series. The fourth CF game even had music by Motoi Sakuraba and Shinji Tamura. It's totally obvious because part of the castle song was reused in the song "The Laughter of Children"in Tales of Destiny. Given the timing of the final CF game (late 1994,) I believe that Star Ocean (which started in 1996) was something of a reboot of the CF series.
Excellent video Johnny, I know the game but never played it, I almost got it back in the days when I had my TG16 but I think it was on the Duo ? And only had the normal cd unit. And a huge thank you for Gaijilionaire's channel link this is right up my alley, import games and Japan.
Awesome video! This is my favourite thing about watching your channel, finding out about game series I’ve never heard of before! :D will definitely be looking for these next time I’m in japan!
Thank you so much for sharing! Without you and help from others like you, amazing games would be forgotten in history. I have never heard of this game before, but I appreciate the story and depth you went into on this. Very very cool!
Dude, this looks awesome! This is what I’m talking about - strange Japanese stuff that never came here and even 30 years later there is some mystery around it. I can’t get enough!
I used to run a Cosmic fantasy fans IRC channel on dal net in 96-99. Not many folks there, but we were fans. Sort of. The community never blossomed, but we loved it.
Well I'm glad you got to talk to us about these. Gonna check out your friend's channel. That being said, I would love to see these re-released in English on current platforms as a bundle.
I've wondered about these games before as I believe they are the only Working Designs RPGs I've never played. Enjoyed the review, I will give Gaijillionaire's channel a look.
Nice video!!! I have CF2 for the turbo cd but I didn't know much about the history of the series. Your video has filled me in as far as its history. Its a crime that we never got the whole series! Maybe someday. Thank you again!!!
Wow I’ve been waiting for this review for so long! That Hawaii remote you filmed was so awesome though! I kinda hoped for your thoughts and review of Cosmic Fantasy 2 in particular, but this still blew me away. Great work!
Man I really got the rest of the series or at least a translation. Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Valis 2 were really good pc engine cd games and really showed of the potential of the system. Thanks John I still remember your first Ys video that made me fall in love with the Turbografx and Ys
I'm happy you got to cover this. I think I sent you a message back in 2012 or 2013 asking you if you would ever talk about cosmic fantasy 2. I remember I was playing it thinking happy console gamer must love this game. It's too bad these games never even got fan translations. At least we got lunar 1 and 2 and Vay for Sega CD. Very similar in style. I used to think Vay was so cool with the robots and fantasy mixed together. Great video.
Hey, HCG - thanks for the nostalgia trip. I used to be more active in the PCE scene back in the days and this series always had a special place in my heart. The first 2 parts are a bit clunky, but by the 3rd one, production values really went up -- and I even ended up writing a little walkthrough up in gamefaqs - which still stands to this day (it's only for the last chapter of the game) I'm hoping it helped some of you finish CF3! :)
I find it pretty much impossible to meet a woman who even remotely tolerates the fact that I still play games at 37. Meanwhile, Johnny has Bayonetta lug a heavy camera around Waikiki as he searches for an obscure jrpg-themed arcade.
Johnny, you lovable son of a gun! Thank you for the introduction to Cosmic Fantasy! Gotta see if we (the fan base) can push this for virtual release. I would love to play this for the first time just like I did with Ys Books I & II on my Wii console (another series you introduce me to). Does Sunsoft still have the rights for it? And a shout out to Working Designs!! Thank goodness for their hard work on their master pieces!! (Arc the Lad and Lunar series) And of course, a shout out to you and to your wife Kim! That reporter style works really well with you two! Keep up the marvelous work!
Am happy that we're going to get a official English release of Cosmic Fantasy 1 & 2 for the Cosmic Fantasy Collection for the Nintendo Switch. Hopefully a collection of Cosmic Fantasy 3 along with Cosmic Fantasy 4 Part 1 and Part 2 is not far away.
Great video Johnny! I've never heard of this game series before this video, but learning about it from your experiences with it was fantastic! I love videos like this, so keep them coming man! 😁😁😁😁
Awesome video! These are my favorite, where you talk about the Turbografx and PC Engine. I had Cosmic Fantasy 2 on the Turbo CD. Loved the cinemas but it wasn't in the same league as Final Fantasy IV and VI.
Johnny I just wanted to say thank you for your recommendation of this series. I watched this video when you originally made it and when I learned this game was coming out from Limited Run l grabbed it to truly dive in and see what it’s all about. I had a fantastic time and a bit of retro throw back for me as well as I grew up in the NES era in America. I just wanted to say if you had never made this video or made the recommendation to try it out ….I don’t see how I would have ever found it or even played this marvel . Thanks for all you do, long time watcher and life time fan!
Great video! I have to say, these types of games are not my cup of tea, but I really enjoyed learning about the series because of your passion for it. You have a talent for talking about games because no matter what it is, I don't think I've ever seen a video of yours that I found boring or terrible. Amazing job as always.
Omg jonhnny welcome to hawaii!! Bro i live just 5 min away from there. A month ago i commented one of your videos saying i was crossing the Canadian boarder (ive got family in bellingham WA where your bellis fair mall videos take place i believe) anyways my gf and i took a day trip to Vancouver and on the way back we stumbled across Delta and i said to her "hey i think this is the place johnny and robman talk about." Small world, It just occured to me you've more than likely already headed back home. Hope you and kim enjoyed yourselfs, until next time. Aloha brother
This is why I enjoy your chann so much. I was reminiscing over the original Lunar Silver Star and looked at Working Designs. I noticed Vay that I never heard of and thrn I saw other games published and saw the Cosmic Fantasy 2 entry. I made me wonder and so I wiki'd up. Then I thought "oh, this series is surely reviewed." And lo and behold you went thd extra mile to go over them. Cool and thank you.
I really like the review format: informative, historical, documentary like. I have never heard of Cosmic Fantasy before but this has sparked my interest.
I love this style of review from Johnny! More! more! more!!! 😃 I Really wish I had a Turbo-Duo when I was a kid, SO MANY GREAT ANIME GAMES! I feel like I missed out on so much! Now its nearly impossible to own any of these games (Collectors pain is real!!!!). Thanks for another Great Video Johnny! MJR
Oh man!!! I remember wanting a Turbo CD so bad for CF2! I would read all about it in Turbo Magazine. Your arcade journey reminds me of the ghost arcade journey from High Scores Girl. Thank you for another fantastic video!
I'm being quite late to the party but I guess I'd leave a comment anyway to show my gratitude (and for the algorithm as well). The story is I was rummaging through article after article of old Japanese gaming mags at Sega Retro to get my fix of gaming nostalgia and came across this RPG series with quintessentially late 80s/early 90s anime aesthetics. It piqued my interest since on one hand I immediately recognised the characteristic art style of Kazuhiro Ochi, who was huge back in the days, but on the other hand I've never seen or heard of the franchise until today even though I was born in Japan in the late 80s, indicating this series being so dead and dormant for years. Then I googled the title only to find out you covered this title last year. I've subscribed to your channel since about the same time period IIRC but never got around to watching this particular video. It's like some weirdest roundabout trip down (nonexistent) memory lane for me.
Whoa that's awesome that you went to scope the actual location out. While I love the games room videos dearly I'd love to see more videos like this one where you visit, I guess you would say historical gaming locations. Just don't overwork Kim next time XD Anyway this series sounds really cool, I guess it's another on the list of games to play before I die thanks to you and Game Sack.
Great and Nostalgic Video😍. Realy liked the Hawai Part 😁. Sadly we can never expirience the Series until we learn japaneses😅, would realy Love to. Go for it, man 😉🤘
I've been playing PC Engine for the first time recently. The more I play and look up the system, the more blown away I am. It's such a neat little machine that's super portable and it uses FREAKING CARDS!! That's never been done again on a console and they were way ahead of their time. Also, I know a game isnt all in its graphics, but good god, for an early 90s machine, the graphics that came out far surpassed Nintendo. So far I'm only able to play thru roms, but damn I would love to get into PC Engine collecting.
I love when you do TurboGrafx videos! It's a real shame we only got #2. I wonder if there are fan patches and fan voice overs for cut scenes for the other games.
Ah so this is what Star Ocean tried to emulate and copy with its intersteller adventures and interconnected worlds/games. How Tri-Ace tried to connect Star Ocean 1,2, 4 & 5 was...done in a really odd way to say the least

Wait, he said you subbed this, so are you "orphan"?
@@infasis He was talking about The King of Smut, thats someone different. Although that title is pretty darn cool, lol.
You're awesome, CRISHTANG! :)
Thanks for including me in this video! It was great fun to make!
Already subbed!
LionHeartXII great! Don’t be stranger. Leave lots of comments!
larcsword890 thanks! I’m sure if you get back into it you’ll remember a lot. I’ll keep up translating as long as people are watching! 💫

I love waking up on my only day off and having a new video from you. I love your work man, your videos have been putting a smile on my face for years and years.
Okay great. Now for the next episode Johnny will fly to Mars to talk about the Red Faction series.
Cosmic Fantasy Collection releases in 13 hours on limited run for switch! You really have one of the best channels on youtube. Thanks to everyone involved. Seeing the arcade being another store now and seeing those old photos reminds me of my kid days playing arcade machines in bars with Metal Slug on them. What a time to be alive.
This has been amazing seeing both you and Kim out and about. Thanks for taking us on holiday
All the games are coming to Switch.
First collection is out now and 2nd will release this december.

Got chills warching the video. As long your passion for games is burning, keep doing videos like this one.
Well John, you already got me into Ys and Phantasy Star, why not another RPG series I've never tried?
Thank you Johnny for helping keep the Cosmic Fantasy alive!
Sometimes I really miss the early 90s.
When you said this was 26 years ago I thought "damn that's AGES ago. I can't even imagine being alive back then." Then you said 1992 and reminded me that I am, in fact, 26 years old...

My god, this reporter style video somehow suits you well.
Do more if you get the chance!
He really seemed to enjoy himself, haha! That was awesome
Such an awesome series! I've only played a couple of installments myself but I really enjoyed them and I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the other games.
KidShoryuken Jim!
Love the new format man. :) all I can say is relax and let the points roll out like your off cuff videos. let the script inform the topic as apposed to just right up reading it. since it comes across as a read. :)

Yeah, this is one of the best videos i have seen in your channel... ever. It has a bit of everything going on. Congratulations on that.
Liked and shared already. Now it’s over to watching. I love these old series retrospective reviews they are always quite interesting.

This video feels super nostalgic. It almost reminds me of your early stuff absolutely loving it 👍
I remember having a save file right before the shower scene in cosmic fantasy 2.
Lol
You can feel the passion bledding through, these are always my favorite videos
Excellent video Johnny, I know the game but never played it, I almost got it back in the days when I had my TG16 but I think it was on the Duo ? And only had the normal cd unit.
And a huge thank you for Gaijilionaire's channel link this is right up my alley, import games and Japan.
Awesome video! This is my favourite thing about watching your channel, finding out about game series I’ve never heard of before! :D will definitely be looking for these next time I’m in japan!
Gaijillionaire is one of the BEST UA-cam channels out there. He's a kind and amazing guy

Just grabbed a bunch of these, looking forward to the giving them a try.
You don't know how happy I am to find out that your passion project ended up being about the Cosmic Fantasy series!
Well I'm glad you got to talk to us about these. Gonna check out your friend's channel. That being said, I would love to see these re-released in English on current platforms as a bundle.
Loved this game, my first turn-based RPG. Been hooked ever since.
Omg!!!! This episode was amazing!!!
Never hears about cosmic fantasy and it looks like a great game.
Loved the quest for the arcade
Great video, I'm glad your passion project came to fruition! I'm definitely interested in the games now
I've wondered about these games before as I believe they are the only Working Designs RPGs I've never played. Enjoyed the review, I will give Gaijillionaire's channel a look.
Great video. I always wondered about this series.
Nice video!!! I have CF2 for the turbo cd but I didn't know much about the history of the series. Your video has filled me in as far as its history. Its a crime that we never got the whole series! Maybe someday. Thank you again!!!
Great episode! I love hearing about awesome forgotten gaming relics like this.
Love me some Gaijjillionare, his manga comic episodes are FANTASTIC
Been waiting for this one! TurboGrafx prices though... one of these days!
Pretty cheap for the PC engine games but if you don't speak Japanese they are not much good to you lol
There was nothing in the Cosmic Fantasy vault, but it wasn’t Happy Console Gamer’s Fault!
I've only played Cosmic Fantasy 2. I can't believe how many there are!
Hopefully there will be some fan translations in the near future.
I find it pretty much impossible to meet a woman who even remotely tolerates the fact that I still play games at 37.
Meanwhile, Johnny has Bayonetta lug a heavy camera around Waikiki as he searches for an obscure jrpg-themed arcade.
This was an amazing episode! I was really surprised to see Cosmic Fantasy covered here as it is so super obscure, awesome stuff :D
(Arc the Lad and Lunar series)
And of course, a shout out to you and to your wife Kim! That reporter style works really well with you two! Keep up the marvelous work!
Always glad to hear you talk about these obscure classic games.
I've always wanted to play this series. Thanks for the upload 👍🏽!!!
Great video Johnny! I was just talking to my wife about cosmic fantasy 2 a couple days ago!
I'm definitely gonna check these out thanks Johnny, I'm always on the lookout for old-school jrpgs
Awesome video! These are my favorite, where you talk about the Turbografx and PC Engine. I had Cosmic Fantasy 2 on the Turbo CD. Loved the cinemas but it wasn't in the same league as Final Fantasy IV and VI.

Thanks Nathan!! :D
I played through CF2 on TG16CD when I was young. I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for the video!
What a wonderful video! We need a remastered collection of these games.
Great episode ☺️ So much passion in this channel, Absolutely love it! Thanks for sharing ☺️

How in the hell did I miss this episode?! Been a fan of this series for most of my life. Thank you so much for this one.
This reminds me of some of your older videos, love it!
MJR
Man, Johnny, it's always a pleasure to learn about an RPG series I didn't know anything about! You made my day.
Gaijilionaire is a great channel. Stumbled across it few weeks ago 👍
This was a great video about a series I knew nothing about. Thanks
Oh man!!! I remember wanting a Turbo CD so bad for CF2! I would read all about it in Turbo Magazine.
Your arcade journey reminds me of the ghost arcade journey from High Scores Girl.
Thank you for another fantastic video!
Very cool video HCG, I have never heard of this series. Subbed to the other fellows channel also.

When he said "My wife printed me out this map" I honesty thought he went on the trip without Kim ! >.
I did too, I was like, what no kim? Hahaha
I love how casually Johnny mentions “My friend, the king of smut” 😂
Awesome video! Love the combo of retrospective and looking for the old arcade.
You think that was casual... You should hear what happens when they say THAT over live Radio... ua-cam.com/video/Td2CLz_0Wvg/v-deo.html

When your dad makes the Hawaii vacation into a project. lol (nice shirt J)
Aloha brah! As always, respect and props to the King of Smut and the King of Sega!
This series reviews are awesome, I discovered Grandia from your video.
Nice episode. You and Kim through Hawaii was a cool segment too.
5:54 This is hilarious and great. It feels like John is reading us a bedtime story.
Another great vid. Thanks Johnny!
Here's hoping this video stirs up interest enough for some translation groups to work on these games!
