    Magnacut issue is just the latest excuse. Guy has not delivered on 3V and S90V either. He even stated in a recent UA-cam comment on his video that this one customer's knife was ready but didn't have a sheath and sheaths cost money. So, according to his own words, he doesn't have money to get a sheath so he can deliver a completed knife that was ordered in 2020. All that preorder money is spent and he can't fulfill the orders for one reason or another. He has now said he can't make GSO 5.1 in Bohler steel (that he was offering to let customers switch to from Magnacut) because there are high tariffs on large materials, so he is not getting that. I think all the latest videos and such is Guy setting up to file bankruptcy with it being someone else's fault.

  • @Mrarmageddon8
    @Mrarmageddon8 8 місяців тому +14

    I think Guy has backed himself into a corner. By the production schedule posted on 2/14 on his own site, he has barely made progress on the 2022-23 orders. I’m guessing a lot of these backlog knives are for the CPM steels and he has essentially burnt down his bridge with being able to obtain those materials. He has been cheerleading Elmax and K890 to the extreme but he even admits that it’s tough to get the sheets of these materials that are suitable for his larger knifes. So Guy has to hope he can finish the backlog with the materials he already has or a big chunk of his preorders are basically indefinitely delayed with no obvious material replacements and costs will just continue to rise.
    I think Guy would’ve been in a better position if he was more diplomatic about this situation as well, and waited until he got a conclusive answer on the issue before he started his “PR campaign” against Niagara and Crucible. He also needs to be more transparent with his own customers and give them the cold hard far off order timeframes instead of claiming that all his back orders will be “finished in a few weeks”.

    @norwd 5 місяців тому +3

    I think it’s admirable to call each customer and offer a refund in response to a manufacturer backing out, it shows integrity. If the manufacturer or upstream provider was ultimately at fault, the time for blame is either after the backlog is cleared… or in bankruptcy proceedings.

    I ordered a blade from Survive! so long ago, not only did I forget about the order, I forgot they even existed as a company. Now I'm getting emails from them, and seeing vids whining about Magnacut. If they can't even fill orders, they should not be focused on making content and or bashing CPM. They have pretty much put the last nail in the coffin of their credibility at this point. That's a shame as by all acounts, they made a great knife at one time.

    The issues guy is having looks like it’s maybe coming from decarb and not leaving enough steel pre heat treat to grind down past the problem steel post ht. Maybe it’s possible he got a bad batch but I’m not convinced. Guy doesn’t even cut his blanks out transverse to the rolling direction of the steel which means he’s losing out on toughness and clearly doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s admitted as such, saying he is learning along the way since recently buying shop equipment.

    Companies will sometimes offer a settlement as a gesture of good faith before potentially pursuing other legal action. It shows they tried to work with em. Despite the magnacut thing, guy has 2015 (and every year since) orders open in 3v that still have no real delivery date. I don’t think he has any intention of fulfilling all the old 3v big blades and would rather people refund them since he is taking a loss on them.
    Also..it was telling when guy sent his fanboys on Larrin giving his contact info and all. Larrin has nothing to do with Niagara he doesn’t even work in the knife or steel business.

    You are SO RIGHT! Glad you are addressing Survive's outrageous "Business" practices are deplorable! Ordered the GSO 5.1 in Magnacut almost 3 years ago, finally, reached someone within the company to change my order from Magnacut to CPM-3V due to my displeasure with their Magnacut issues and no longer have confidence in the steel. So, all this time has passed and he's pumping out all the new 4" models and so on. Also had an EDC 4 on order for 1.5 years. Yet here they are selling them directly to the public, but our pre-orders are just sitting around somewhere! Horrible business model! Yes, I feel bad for him with these Magnacut issues, but STOP running out these new models when you have all these pre-orders just sitting around and not being delivered! He needs to focus of getting his pre-orders delivered before starting new projects! 🤔🤔

    Regardless of the issues about him he makes an awesome knife. I just picked up an EDC 4 yesterday and I have gone over it from end to end and it is 100% no flaws. I've been looking for a particular fixed blade for years and kept holding off because either I didn't like something about the knife or the sheath. His knifes check every box for me. I understand the concerns of paying for something and not getting it. I'd be upset too. Hopefully he makes it right.

      That does sound like time well spent to me however on the other hand I know that when you are running a business and paying bills you can't just set aside 3-5 weeks of labor for work who's money is already gone.

So what ever his business model he's using is NOT working! REMEMBER THIS: Doing the same thing over and over agin and expecting different results is call INSANITY! He can't continue to operate in this manor! Some of the 8"-10" GSO's took around 8 years of waiting! That's unacceptable! I would love to just get mymoney back and move on, but that's not going to happen either! And the LAST thing I'd like to point out is he MUST raise his prices! He is so stuck on keeping the same price point when EVERYTHING, including delivery cost have sky rocketed.People are easily paying $400-$500 for top of the line quality knives. Keeping his prices artificially low is only hurting himself and the company! Labor cost to are exploding not to mention the utilities, gas and electricity cost of his factory have doubled in the past 5 years! I think 2024 is going to declare survive. I'm rooting for him though, I have a few orders in and looks like the EDC 4 in k890 is about to ship...the two orders in magnacut, who knows with this ongoing crap. But I for one believe him and think he is being genuine, but then I don't have a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 year old order with him either. But then even Chris Reeve has a 6+ year delivery timeline if you order direct...so its certainly not unheard of for long waits. I mean he really just got his own manufacturing going this past summer so I think he is headed in a good direction at this point and 2024 will be his turnaround year if he doesn't get any more bad materials. I personally think (all speculation as usual) that he got a bad ingot...shit happens, crucible should make him whole figure out their processes so it doesn't happen again...this all would have just blown over, none the wiser...

      Well, let’s just state the obvious. He probably needs that money to stay afloat and hopefully soon it won’t be that way. Anyway, it’s not that the criticisms of survive aren’t warranted and the excuses though valid will only carry so far if he doesn’t turn it around pretty quickly. But the fact remains that no matter how Chris Reeves handles it. They still have a six year wait so it’s certainly not unheard of for very long leadtimes in this industry.

    CNC shop worker here, prior overseas contractor and LE/Corrections: We are personally seeing bad differences in steel that we order for our parts and those variations come from US suppliers sourced locally to out of state. That causes chattering, problems with run time, set up and breakdown( throwing or using up inserts prematurely) So material no matter where sourced for whatever is a major issue, bad management in every business and factories are a major issue (lots of BlackScout Survival mentalities try to play management and that is no joke) .....as far as inspection goes once again manpower, numbers and resources are an issue. No one wants to work anymore and puts undue hours and stress on those that will MPI equipment costs money to buy, run and maintain so tough call.....MPI is by far IMHO the way to find those flaws. I guess my point is these are not "excuses" these are major problems within the steel and manufacturing industry that have no current easy solution.

    Force this mans hand. Make this man anwser for his actions or inactions as such.
    Other companies dont seem to have issues producing products with same materials. Im not an expert in steel or knives but it seems to me other knife makers have made many thousands of knives with like materials with very few issues.
    So who do we believe one person whos methods are suspect at best. Self admitted mistakes and learning as we go , or ? . Do we trust the many well respected knife makers who have delivered countless high quality knives to countless customers with very few failures.
    As i said im no knife or steel expert but im just raising valid questions one must ask themselves when put in simular situation reguarding any proven product manufactured and sold to the public. Whats more likely than not ?
    If sued he would be forced to prove his posture and methods are sound and the rest of the makers would the be left holding the bag. 🤔 .
    See what im saying. This maker would have to have some pretty strong evidence and would surely have top experts agree with or dispell his allegations.
    Who knows ? He might be a genius or a fraud but i doubt he can be both. Good luck to all who placed orders with this maker.

    The problem starts with powder metallurgy. The assumption is that there is enough pressure and heat to create a bond. The old smelting process was guaranteed to create bonds because the metal was liquefied, which it is not with PM process. Smelted stock is also hot rolled down from 8 inch thick ingots to half inch or less in thickness. The hot rolling process removes 99.99% possibility of a void. I do not believe Survive is lying, I do believe PM steels present a quality control problem that does not exist with smelted/hot rolled steel stock. I have owned a few GSO's and I thought they were excellent knives.

    I think Guy has every intention of delivering knives, but his business managment and manufacturing process development skills are poor. The difference between him and you is that you offered to refund people’s money when there was a problem with delivery.
    I work doing process development for manufacturing, and I didn’t see anything that he presented was out of the ordinary when developing a manufacturing process for product in a new material, definitely not anything that would stop delivery in it’s tracks for years.
    Normally when you develop a product you make prototypes, then do a pilot run to get idea of how much it actually costs to make the product as well as to dial in the process. You then price in the process including the cost of scrap into the final product. You can then roll with that process and eat the cost of scrap, until you develop a product with less loss. If he had done that before the pre-order (or limited the pre-order to the pilot run, and selling only that until he can put a realistic price on the final product) he wouldn’t be in this position.
    Instead of being accountable and refunding people’s money for backorders he is blaming the materials and his suppliers. Challenges are normal when manufacturing new anything, overcoming them is what your customers pay you to do.

    when people talk about a "living wage" its in the context of giant multinational corporations that are hugely profitable. The argument is concerning "excess profits" which come as a result of "exploitative labor practices". They're talking about Walmart and McDonalds. They're not talking about small business employers much the local handyman. This stuff isn't rocket science. Every other remotely developed country has it figured out and many of them have a lower minimum wage than the US, or even no minimum wage without these kinds of issues. Walmart literally trains their workers on how to apply for government assistance, it's quite literally part of their business model, and the government enables that. You don't have to be an economist to understand that its a joke and that joke if on you, the serfs.

    creely is a generic dime a dozen stock removal guy in his garage grinding steel and selling based on gimmicks like rex121. he admitted himself he doesn't even know what that so called peening process is or what it entails. He's not an expert on anything. he's a guy in his garage. All that process is basically glass blasting. It's a finishing process to make stuff look nice. Nothing magical and has nothing to do with anything.
    MC is a steel that pushes the boundaries on what is currently possible. They were not even sure that it could actually work until they made the first heat and it came out okay at the last minute. The issue is, if the process isn't done carefully with extremely tight tolerances a steel like MC is more likely to have issues than other steels including other pm steels that are simpler to manufacture and not nearly as sensitive. If it's done right then it's an excellent knife steel. Other pm steels like say s35vn have a greater margin for error and the end result is unlikely to have such complications.
    The socio-economic issue, imo, is the obvious and precipitous decline of the United States. You can't even order a sandwich without a 50/50 shot that it will be wrong or messed up in some way. Notoriously careless American doctors are the 3rd leading cause of death resulting 250,000+ excess deaths each year and injuring millions more. The quality of anything that's made in the US after half a century of unbridled liberal economics, deregulation, and the religion of quarterly profits above all else has hollowed out much of the country. Big American companies are not trustworthy. The American government is not trustworthy. Most Americans are underpaid and hate their jobs. Nobody cares about anything. Would it really be so surprising if this guy got a bad heat of a steel that has to be manufactured extremely precisely? The issue is most guys would just stfu an move on, but he wants to make some grandstand on die on the hill.
