Script was fantastic. The tension from the 50 minute dialogue in the front half was scarier than than traditional horror elements later on. Very very smart writing and masterfully acted.
The reason why the granny panties are brought up is because in Mormonism they believe in wearing religious underwear that they call garments. The top part covers up about halfway down to your elbow and the bottom goes down to just above the knees. So when the kids ask her if she wears magic underwear and then they pants her, you see her garments. Garments in the past were taught to have magic protecting powers but nowadays they just teach they're symbolic and to promote what Mormons consider to be modest. Hence why they call them magic underwear. And fun fact, they recently came out with a new garment for women that doesn't have any sleeves.
This movie reminded me of CREEP with Mark Duplass. It funny how they even used the song CREEP. I think Heretic drew some inspiration from CREEP, the way Monopoly drew from the Landlord game lol
Yes! It showed that she was seeing the butterfly. Even in the next shot where we see it's not actually there, her eyes and head move like she's watching it fly away and she looks comforted. So clearly she believed it was real. She still had faith in something.
@@dancinggrace22MSU I believe she died in the cellar with Mr. Reed. Earlier in the movie there was a scene talking about near death experiences. Seeing things that couldn't make sense or weren't real. The point where sister Barnes woke up after having bled out for some time and saving her in the last minute, I think that was the start of the near death experience so everything from then on wasn't real and she realized it when the butterfly vanished on her hand. I don't think she looked at peace I think she was doubtful and was looking around to see where the butterfly had gone to. That or the faith based ending. I like that it's ambiguous and open to interpretation. Very thought provoking. Oh also, don't forget it could all be a simulation lol
I’ve recently gone down a rabbit hole of mormonism lol so I caught a lot of things that the average viewer may not have. The “underwear” kept getting brought up because mormons are supposed to wear garments under their clothes every single day not only to “protect” them but to show their loyalty to god. This is just one of the MANY strict rules they have to follow in order to enter the temple
i’m fairly religious and i appreciate movies that make u think about it at a deeper level. haven’t checked this out yet but i’ve been looking forward to it for a while
I haven't seen the film yet but I'm wondering how much Mike Flannagan could have influenced this style of film. It kind of sounds like his wheelhouse to me. Psychologically terrifying and insightful, more than pure horror.
I really liked it because finally someone put my thoughts on religion into a psychological horror film. This visual iceberg of faith really nailed the representations to a t. And something tells me that Conservatives are going to HATE this story. In addition there’s so much well used symbolism and dialogue that tells the viewer the subtext of the plot if they really pay attention.

Hugh Grant was chilling in this movie! his bouncing back and forth between friendly yet condescending, and scary and manipulative was genius.

The actual final scene shows that the butterfly wasn't real.
I’m here to comment this… Still a kinder ending because her faith kept her from despair as she was dying.
there was however a butterfly trapped behind the window pane in the first act of the film, which is far more significant upon reflection.
Does it? Or does it just show both possibilities?

I think anyone who says this film is preachy, or has some agenda (unless you consider posing conversation as an agenda), grossly miscued it

great stuff man!
THAT WAS TOPHER GRACE?!~
obviously religion is control, but regardless of that. Religion brings us human peace of mind.
Loved it! Having been born into the jehovah’s witness cult it was so relatable. It’s all about control.
Ironically, the movie is kinda preachy.
I loved it honestly it was magnificent
