2021 Suzuki GSX-R1000R Review | MC Commute

- Suzuki pairs value, versatility, and performance in the liter-sized superbike segment with its 2021 Suzuki GSX-R1000R ($17,749). This up-spec GSX-R benefits from upgraded suspenders, a slick-shifting electronic quickshifter, and a couple of other worthwhile upgrades that make it more competent on and off track.
--
When it comes to outright street-riding comfort, few sportbikes ride as well as Suzuki GSX-Rs. And that trend continues with its 1000R. It’s a very slim motorcycle-especially for an inline-four. The seat is well supported and the reach to the clip-on style controls isn’t too aggressive. We like the position of the rider’s footpegs, which are neither too high, nor too low. It would be nice if this GSX-R had foot control adjustment like its GSX-R600 and 750 duo. One change we bemoan is its 0.4-gallon-smaller 4.2-gallon fuel tank.
Tap the starter button and the GSX-R fires to life with a unique growl. Despite employing a conventional inline-four firing order, the engine offers signature character unlike others in its class. We especially appreciate its meaty intake roar and whiny, high-tech-sounding exhaust note. Suzuki offers an ingenious variable valve timing solution that helps give its four-cylinder the best of both worlds.
Peppy bottom-end bark morphs into thick car-passing midrange oomph. Top-end power is strong too, but not quite as powerful as competitors in its class. Still, it’s got enough giddyap to get the blood pumping. We’d estimate a horsepower figure in the mid-160s at the 190-series Bridgestone Battlax RS11 tire. Fuel-mileage-wise, we measured an average of 36 mpg.
An early leader in sportbike electronics (the ’97 GSX-R750 was the first Japanese sportbike with fuel injection), this GSX-R retains its S-DMS adjustable power mode setup. Ride-by-wire throttle integration affords throttle control adjustment that’s neatly integrated into each power mode. Full-power mode A was our favorite.
Ten-way-adjustable IMU-powered traction control is also present, however its programming feels more rudimentary compared to other contemporary setups from Japan and Europe. The 1000R also adds launch control to its arsenal, but we didn’t test it this time. Wheelie and engine-brake control are absent from its electronics suite, as is cruise control. Heated grips would be a nice upgrade too considering how roadworthy this Gixxer is.
The slick-shifting up-and-down electronic quickshifter, on the other hand, performs splendidly allowing you to row through the six-speed gearbox instantly.
In terms of agility, the 445-pound GSX-R1000R impresses with its maneuverability. It steers more sharply than its predecessor while still offering a high degree of stability. Equally impressive is the lofty level of rear grip that the chassis affords. The upgraded Balance Free suspension components follow the road more accurately than the older hardware on the basic GSX-R. Still, the front end isn’t as magical feeling as Team Green’s offering (employs similar front suspension).
The R model’s stainless steel front brake lines are a much-needed improvement and help mitigate brake fade-a feature that has plagued Suzuki GSX-Rs. We also appreciate the rear brake’s strong, responsive feel. Full-time ABS with cornering functionality mitigates instability during braking.
A bright LED headlamp throws a deep spread of light during night rides. The R’s LED positioning lights are also a nice touch. However, because it employs an IMU, we wish Suzuki added a cornering light function to boost visibility during fast-paced night rides through curvy stretches of road. Keeping tabs on vehicle settings is a 5.5-inch backlit LCD. Despite being only one color, the display is functional and easy to read day and night. However, the display could be larger.
Despite not employing a truly modern electronics package, the GSX-R1000R continues to be one of our favorites due to its versatility and ease of use. We’re big fans of its punchy powertrain and capable chassis that’s as adept on track as it is off of it. Considering its competitive price tag and fine craftsmanship, there’s no doubt Suzuki drives a hard bargain with its GSX-R1000R.

I love this bike. Had the legendary K5 for many years. Leaving the dealership this thing felt like a plush cadillac. I was so use to a really stiff suspension. I drove roughly 2 miles before hitting the freeway. The first time I hammered the throttle it just made me laugh so hard. Kind of a strange reaction. It pulled so hard I just couldn't stop smiling. Been a life long Suzuki fan boy. I wouldn't even think about selling this bike for anything else. I love it
It has a fuel guage. I know that sounds basic. But its so re assuring having a fuel guage. I think this is the best 1000 cc bike right now. (I'm a kawasaki rider though.) XD
Got my 2021 Suzuki for 15K$ new ! I love my Swifty 😍 Its Hybrid too 😂83Hp just enough for me. 45mpg real city drive.
@@cocosloan3748 I love this bike. I have just like I wanted it. Stainless lines, vortex rearsets and many other mods. Now I just need the weather to cooperate 😕
I've got a k6 that I've done over 30k miles on but I'm finding it hard to let it go to buy one of these
@@TrulyUniqueOne I don't blame you. It's the best motorcycle ever made. It still is the bike to beat. Anyone will disagree never rode one
This dude speaks in 12 point times new Roman font
And in bold
…as the words show up on the computer screen
Staccato
i fell asleep listening to him speak
yo lol i gotta watch it in 1.25 speed lmao
Iconic Suzuki...does sooo much with so much less than the others.
A somewhat 'flawed' gem, but still a gem. Nice bike.
Gixxer, the original squid missile, the ultimate cop get away bike, just drop a gear and disappear 🤣
It's a superbike, not a 600cc supersport you don't need to drop a gear you'll disappear no matter what gear you are in.
@ghostryder we need to meet 😂😂
@Prash we can all hear the sound of the joke flying over your head.
@Prashim sure no one ever accused you of having a sense of humor
Right doesn't mention the gsxr skip a ticket feature! Save a lot on insurance that way....
Kawasaki ZX-14R: “Let’s put the ugliest exhaust on a motorcycle.”
Suzuki GSX-R 1000R: “Hold my beer.”
I feel like all of those types of bikes are doing that. But like most of the time your going to replace it anyway
Hold my sake
That stock exhaust made decision to swap it easier so i dont mind that
Blame US noise regulations.
@@xorbe2 you mean UK emissions standards right?
First time I rode a Suzuki its road manners blew me away. I do motorcycle photography as my full time job, so I have hundreds of machine to compare them too. Yet, its always the same. I have friends that ride many more powerful expensive bikes, but after riding the Suzuki you always hear "HOLY SHIT that is COMFORTABLE! It's smooth and has awesome midrange". Yeah its not the lightest, nor the fastest. Regardless, most of them hit the nail on the head. The road isnt a racetrack, and even the most sporty riders spend 5% of their time on a bike actually on a track.
Even my friend that rides a Vstar 1100 cruiser told me he possibly would rather take my GSX650F over distance, even compared to his V Twin cruiser. Somebody rode one to the Arctic Circle and back 1200 miles with no issues.
Long live Suzuki and their love for sport and daily rideability without the fancy electronic bullshit for horrible riders.
*update- Now on a 2015 GSXR-750 and I'm only more reassured of my words. Holy Cow.
Waheed is still the best, most comprehensive, least bullshit, and this bike is right up his street.
Cheers for continuing to make great bikes Suzuki.
Agreed
the only good modern bike they make besides the hayabusa IMO. they dont give a shit about any other of their bikes
Thanks man. Sorry I got the MY wrong on the original vehicle.
@@kamprikorn GSX-S series is good, as is Katana.
That exhaust looks like Popeyes arm after he eats his spinach.
😂
Hahaha
That was by far the most thorough and comprehensive review of any vehicle car or motorcycle that I ever watched or read on the internet.
That is why you do what you for a living. You really raised the bar for Bike reviews and I am relieved I found your UA-cam Channel. Keep up the great work, Scott T.
How he rode that bike, and went into the details.
Adam is the Best Motorcycle reviewer ! I'm gonna upgrade my GSX-R 750 to this bike next summer.
I got a Cbr500 right now and I want this bike … love the colour on it.
Good plan
I'll be changing my gsxr750 in 2023! I look forward to getting back on a 1000 once again..been 12 yrs! .
Correction Suzuki's been making the GSXR 1000 since 2001
You beat me to it. 👍
@@davidelizabeth4933 lol sorry just couldn't resist
Yep. Thanks man and sorry about that.
@@davidelizabeth4933 yep.
@@AdamWaheed no worries bro was just letting you know... wasn't mad u do great videos
Suzuki needs to redesign the 600/750 more like this bike, it’s long overdue
The 750 is actually a classic road racer, hasn’t changed much since 2011.
If Suzuki really wanted to kill it the’d make a 1986 GSXR 750 or 1988 Slingshot retro modern sport bike
I agree. We need it.
waaaaaaaaaaaaaay overdue
I can't believe people still buy them... Almost as bad as the Busa was for 14 years.
@@TEAMWRIGHTEOUS If it aint broke, don't fix it. Makes it easier to get parts too.
I love how the motor sounds at idle when you’re stopped at lights but it sounds even better during revs
Exhaust companies are absolutely loving this
My god that exhaust can is massive!
bbc
They are also often really heavy also. But I do keep them if I want to sell the bike or want to be quiet
@@pleasedontwatchthese9593 they have cats/catalyc converters in them is why. Suzuki did that for a reason
@@bella_testastretta dont be rude and disgusting... how would u like one in your white as gf or wife or boyfriend??

I thought I was watching the video at 1.5 speed until I realised it was actually just Adam Waheed talking at normal speed in the beginning
So refreshing to see a no bs video. No fluff, just straight to the facts and everything I wanted to know 👍🏻
I love it when u talk / review bikes seamlessly while riding
Agreed! It's an excellent, natural format and Adam is the master. 👍🏾
Can't beat Adam reviewing a sport bike, especially if it's a Gixxer.
Adam, as always, thank you for a great review! Partly because of your enthusiasm for the motorcycles you ride on the MC commute, I was inspired to buy my first road bike in many years just last year. I bought a 2016 BMW F00GS with just over 7,000 miles on the odometer, and love it to death. With the full set of saddlebags and top case, my wife and I go for rides and weekend adventures all throughout New England. I always look forward to watching your videos when I ride my commuter train into Boston in the mornings. Keep up the awesome work and God bless! Rob
Very nice. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching this video.
@@AdamWaheed Absolutely, brother !! I really liked the Harley Live Wire MC commute !
That exhaust is GIGANTIC
That stock muffler is bigger than my future.
Its two of us then
But sounds bigger than you both 🤫
I can guarantee! You have never felt The power?
Rudementry! Just means Savage power?
Peeeeeeeweeeeeeing?
😊
Adam, as always you're a fountain of detailed, useful knowledge. Can't believe you even know the engineering of the valve train on this bike!
Yep, a nice bike
I love his knowledge. Riding a fast motorcycle through the twisties, and being in-depth about the bike. It makes me want the bike even more.
Your impression of Adam West's Batman is absolutely dead on.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!...I watched his hayabusa review and thought exactly that!
@@muhammadsteinberg- I like him, and I think his reviews are excellent. But now that I've noticed it, I'll never be able to unnotice it.
@@karlhungus8946 His information is excellent if you ignore the speech pattern. I actually like the guy also just having a lil fun...
I'm loving my 2018 gsxr 1000r in white. Going to ride for the first time this year tomorrow to work. Never looked forward to going to work as much as now. I've been a long time Suzuki gsxr guy. Ever since 1996.
Adam always carrying that Sukuki torch. There may be newer tech and there may be flashier brands, but Suzuki DOMINATES in reliability and performance per dollar, and that makes most Suzuki's a great buy, year after year.
Suzuki dominates in reliability? Where are you getting your data
@@chrisc6874 Reliability per dollar, yes. The big 4 Japanese brands are all pretty close in that respect.
Very complete and compact review, Adam. 👍🏾
I've got the 2020 base model gsxr1000. I absolutely love it. Such a complete motorcycle. It just OOZES capability.
BTW we get LED indicators (turn signals) as standard in Europe. Very compact and visible.👍🏾
I have the same 2020 Gsxr 1000 base. I love it
I have a feeling that Adam enjoyed this MC Commute.
A lot. :)
Yeah he did, he was more aggressive on that bike compared to his usual commutes/reviews :D
This particular bike is the one I have exactly. I have put 2000 miles on it in 2 months I ride :). M4 exhaust undertail , flush signals , rear integrated taillight signals. I love
This bike I’m used to 750s and this is only 40 lbs heavier with All the power you want and handles like it’s on rails and power all over the curve. I ride this daily on A mode . Thinking of starting a channel on this bike let me know what you guys think ;)
Keep it to yourself.
Man I love the look of the bike! That exhaust though lol is huge!
My dream is to be able to fully enjoy bikes with the knowledge and skill that you do, with machines as awesome and fascinating as you get the opportunity to!
'Yes a green light thank you god'. A phrase everyone sport bike rider has uttered in his riding lifetime!! Classic.
Suzuki had the first 16 valve engine's. Twin swirl combustion Chambers that atomized the air fuel mixture well for good torque. Of course the horse power was good back then with multi valve. They were known for having good bottom ends cranks and crank case's. They were made to last too. Suzuki fan here. GS 1000E GS 1150ES, great Bike's. 1150 had great torque and horse power then, always loved the Suzuki Busa, great drag racing motor better than Kawi to me. I actually worked on a drag racing team, I've also owned Kawasaki and Yamaha too, they all had their design Niche's. Brother had Honda's. I've ridden a whole lot of bike's not everyone but a lot.
the stainless steel lines are awesome
Makes me want to buy one!
Suzuki malaysia dah open order tu tuan
You would be glad you did take my word !
@17:52 lol best part of the video, waheed definitely knows how riders feel about green lights
Love the new color scheme
Hate it
Wow, that is a very complete review. Every little bit of the bike was talked about.
The new graphic in screen for specs is a great addition
I have a 2018 model and have over 20k miles on it now, the bike has been flawless except for fork seals just recently, which was not a big deal to replace other then getting the parts for the showa bff forks was a stupid! I tour on it as well as track-
I have made a few mods which I really like such as upsizing the rear tire to a 200/55, swapping the steering damper to a ohlins tt manual adjust, Yoshi r11 full exaust system, and a Yoshi em-pro ecu.....
The formula for an ideal motorbike:
Adam's approval + Chris Moore's tuning and love for Suzuki Motocycles x Brock'sPerformanceExhaust = ?
Typical Suzuki - just a natural at everything its intended to do. Good review Thank you for the insight and clear information. You ride well but take lot of risks. Keep safe 👍
You just need to replace that freaking ton exhaust with whatever brand you like
Adam is right about the GSXR comfort, one could almost fall asleep on the 750 GSXR tank on long commutes to A roads
If that exhaust gets any bigger, I'm going to have to pay rent for it.
Awesome review! I just bought this exact bike today and feel more confident with it now and learned a lot.
Adam is getting better and better. I found the early vids hard to watch, but no more ! Congratz !
I love the build quality from suzuki
I love that your actually super knowledgeable of the bikes you ride.
Not really Suzuki,s VVT only alters cam timing not duration .
I suppose the 160hp Waheed mentions is wheel because this is listed at 202hp crank.
Always has valuable, high quality reviews
We need a rear hugger on that bad boy. I love that color scheme, it would be nice to see a matte red colorway next year.
Metallic for the win
Great review. I know it's not the best bike but I just can't help loving the GSXR. If I was going to get a thousand, it would be this. The can doesn't bother me as like most people I'd ditch it straight away & the dash isn't a problem either as I prefer clocks so TFT or LCD is the same difference to me.
I actually think it IS the best bike, when considering all the factors. That's why I bought mine.
why do you not think this is the best bike, genuinely curious, I'm new to motorcycles
"Best" is relative & subjective to some degree but purely from a specification perspective, it's a little heavier, less powerful & has inferior electronics compared to the class leader(s). Although it's small margins & none of that bothers me personally, but it's made to go quick & basically it's not the quickest. New one due this year supposedly so should be an improvement.
I still thinks the GSXR is the best, after riding it back-to-back with all the top Super bikes on the street and track 🤷
For 17 grand I'd expect them to ditch the janky looking LCD screen for a full color TFT screen.
At this point it's different than everyone's color display. It works great in practice, and it looks really good at night.
The last of the ultimate superbikes
😍
Legendary bike;really fast really powerfull and fantastice handling...
2022 GSX-R1000 (non double "R") has cruise control. Wish it had those spot lights the RR has. BIke is a Great all rounder! Good for drag races, its perfectly balanced to wheelie, Great on the track, and smooth on the streets. If it could only go off-road! :) j/k Love this bike! Rode one of these from Phoenix to Salt Lake CIty, long trip, and it was surprisingly good for a sport bike (would not have dreamed to do that with the R1). Was looking for a new bike and this Jixer is just amazing!
Something about the way these GSXRs sound…Fantastic compared to a lot of other choices as far as I’m concerned…
My only complaint is this one isn't in the MotoGPesque blue. Suzuki currently have the coolest shade of blue in the industry, so it's a crime not to spec it.
In Europe we get the blue scheme.
Adam @ 22:40 got so excited at that red light launch just to come to another red light to stop again a couple meters ahead.. the excitement is too good even on shorts bursts
That can needs to go , that thing is huge
Dude, that's the first mod most buyers do.
Cracking bike. Bulletproof engines.
This color combo is beautiful.
Adam is the best street rider in SoCal. I always enjoy the whinny comments on his speed & lane splitting skills. That’s just how we roll in Cali💯🏍🔥🦾
Great value for the money
Very complete test of this bike.
Well done. Thank you
Nice bike and another good review. I didn’t miss the Q&A to be honest.
Suzuki on GSXR L7+ made the perfect package. Gsxr is made to do everything and i mean everything very well!
it has been redisigned, but also keep the good Suzuki heritage (so did the Busa).
no it's not perfect, no it's not the ultimate track bike or drag bike, no it hasn't the best electonics, but it's genuine Suzuki and that's why we love it!❤️
anyone who want's 100% of one of the above features, buy's R1, s1000rr, ZX10 or maybe 1000rr.
if someone want's to ride on public road, ride on track, go on trip then definately the GSXR is the perfect bike!❤️
*doesn’t have
this motorcycle is awesome and it does not need anything, it is perfect in every way, it certainly does not need more electronics, there was nothing wrong with the way it ran thru the entire video. i want one, just like the one in this video.
Awesome review. Thank you for putting this together and sharing your thoughts about the Gixxer.
2001, not 2003..I owned two 2001 GSXR1000s and I loved them. Wish I still had them.
Probably would not watch a gsxr But Adam is doing it so the video gets a thumbs up
Awesome review. Even gets down to the tires, oil, traction, & lights for us 👍 Heed is a legend. Nice bike.
This bike would've been a 100% go for my commuter if it had cruise control but it's still in my top 5.
Check out MC Cruise
Pay no attention to the haters, Heed. We appreciate your viddys. 👍 Much love.
❤❤❤
Thanks man. Yep. S/o Ray Charles, lol.
Ah! You left out the lower mountain from your footage... that is some the best part of that ride.
awesome video and this bike is KILLAH but I have to mention the giggles I have on account of your Capt kirk style wording. I hope you're cool enough to giggle with us but that word (pause) word (pause) has me rolling!!!
I like Adam's reviews. They're very complete and informative. Camera angle is so important in making the video part watchable and too often here, the camera is too low. Especially as he works a curvy section 3/4 of the way through this one.
That exhaust is ....well.......no words........
Best Friends FOREVER!!!
damm those mufflers are huge
It has catalytics in them
I would love a comparison between this, R1M, Ninja ZX-10R, CBR1000RR and RSP.
Such a beauty! I would love to see suzuki creating 250cc and compete here in indonesia
2 things make it worth it; that one touch start feature and the way the engine automatically revs up as you start off in 1st gear; PRICELESS!
2 things still that make it a bummer; no cruise control and mono color display 🥺
This exact model used with hardly any miles are ridiculously low priced for what they are,
It's also good that suzuki put a cheap exhaust on the bike because everyone throws there standard exhaust in a box in the shed or at least they should do that,
All this bike really needs is a full system aftermarket stacks and a flash plus removal of any mechanical restrictions
He is good, all the best for ur new work bro!
Beautiful bike. Thanks for sharing
Top tip.... Change the playback speed to x1.25 and it sounds normal...🤣.. great review though
I always play his vid at 1.5x and I am not even Native english speaker.
Jeez thought I was the only one!
Great tip.
I apreciate the comments on the new key designs :-)
That stock muffler just ruins how beautiful the bike is IMHO
to me its like, suzuki saying that they know their customers are gonna replace the exhaust anyways so theres no point in upselling them on a nicer one that no one needs
@@Oliver-jv5ww True I almost always see them with yoshi pipes
Those flashers are old school in Europe the bike comes with nice small Led ones .The exhaust is lovley ha ha ha but im sure you can order one with a Yoshi from the factory.I love my 2020 model but the dash could have been colour and cruise contol would also have been nice .I traded my Yam mt10sp in for the gixxer and no regrets the mt was like a tractor compaired to this bike .

Awesome review.... Can u pls share what kind of mic are u using? Its so clear even when you are in speeding.
Good reviews man, straight to the point, no bs
Great review, enjoyed watching you ride. Could you place the camera just a tad bit higher?
Thanks Adam great video.
I jus love the 600 and 750 for street and twistys .but i love this 2022 gsxr1000 would i be dine on the 10000 or thibk its not good in twistys i kno the cbr1000rr is so light ...and the ride modes are they like C is 600 B 750 and A 1000?
Suzuki gsxr1000r is my Favourite supersport Bike ❤
Compared to the 2017 gsxr 1000r is the updated model better or worse or same, better quickshifter and autoblipper now, more or less intrusive ABS, and is the braking system any better?
What a machine
Finally Suzuki geared up their bike
