- President Joe Biden has defended the right to free speech but says “order must prevail” on college campuses.
After weeks of pro-Palestinian protests escalating in universities across the United States, President Joe Biden addressed the nation Thursday, underscoring that the right to free speech and the rule of law must both be upheld.
“Order must prevail,” he said from the White House, even as he stressed that dissent is “essential for democracy.
“We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent,” he said. “The American people are heard. In fact, peaceful protest is in the best tradition of how Americans respond to consequential issues.”
Biden said he does not support calls by some Republican lawmakers including House Speaker Mike Johnson to send in the National Guard to quell protests.

Hey so protests don't work anymore. Maybe actually get involved in government if you care about change. The idea used to be that protests would sway the hearts of Americans who would then push for change on a larger scale. That's not the social impact that protesting has on the majority of Americans any more. I've had two experiences with the "lets go protesting" crowd and both times it was pushed on me by incredibly vapid manipulative people who treated the event like a dating event and social media clout chasing opportunity. They barely had a grip on what the event was about. I've met people who just hitch rides around the country to show up at these peaceful protests and break as many windows as they can in a city they have never been to before. I've also had two different girlfriends who had seizures while trying to "support their friends" at protests after their "friends" didn't watch their back and abandoned them to try to keep up with the spotlight of the event. In the end did we ever see any kind of positive effect from those protests? no not really. Just growing sentiment against protesters of any kind in the US.
