Heh. I'm sure that's a great feeling where one's product is respected and valued just on rep. You're awesome for mentioning that, too, as we all need that recognition at times.
Just switched from Android to IPhone, difficult enough, then had to connect it to my 2018 Forester. Oh boy, at 82 this stuff doesn't come comfortably. Followed your instructions and I DID IT!! 1,000 Thanks Alex, my hero.
Thank you for this video. I took my 2018 Subaru Outback to my dealer because I thought my radio was malfunctioning, but you answered my question. My original OEM radio failed, and the dealer fitted my vehicle with a brand-new radio. I quickly realized a few differences, but the biggest difference is that CarPlay and Apple Play no longer function without a data cable. Another difference is that the default setting for Wi-Fi is "On," but the user should immediately switch it to off unless the car is equipped with internal WiFi. This is because if there is no WiFi and the WiFi is enabled any media sound will skip. After all, it will constantly try to connect to a network that does not exist. My Infotainment System is the same as a newer model because of the radio change. Thanks Alex, I learn a lot about my Subarus from you. I won two Outbacks.
Alex, you are just the very best! Your videos are so precise with all the necessary information. I have had my Forester for over a year and I still sometimes run into little things that I don't know how to fix, and I can be sure to watch one of your videos to find the answer, or at least point me in the right direction. Thank you for your dedication and hard work. You really help me to enjoy my Forester more (and look smart because I know all the hidden ticks!), Keep up the good work!
Thanks for creating terrific content, Alex. I have a 2018 Subaru Outback, and Android Auto will NOT stay connected. It makes long road trips in unknown territory extremely frustrating. Subaru says it's a Google issue, Google won't respond to any messages to app developers.
I should point out you are my Goto channel because as good as the manual can be, it often references the 'go to Subaru dealer for changes' when in fact, most of your videos show how some changes are easily made so you're saving valuable time for a lot of people.
I love your videos! I ordered a forester that should be arriving (I’m in Alaaka) in late September and I’m so excited! I’m a geek who loves reading car manuals and learning what I can. You’re videos are giving me a head start.
Hi, can I adjust the volume when the phone rings? Its too loud. Also can I adjust the seat belt chime to not ding or get progressively louder. Thanks.......great videos by the way. oh yeah its a 23 outback ltd
I got a new Iphone and it took me 45 minutes to pair it to my 2019 Subaru following your instructions. I think you must of left some steps out and as, It is not easy to pair. If it just paired the way you stated in the video that would be easy. There are other hidden steps that must take place. I poked around and after several attempts, I finally got Subaru BT to show up on my phone under the Blue tooth settings. Pairing a phone is not easy like the way you say it is.
Hi Alex. Your video is very informative - I just got a 2018 Forester base model (with VERY low miles in great condition), and it's the first car I have had with the screen stuff with phone integration. First - the first part where you go through all the iPhone process is very dark, and I had trouble seeing it (I'm elderly with tired vision). I'd rather not use bluetooth because it's a power hog. So if I use my USB cable, I can set it up (and habitually use it) that way, or do I still need to use bluetooth to pair for the first device recognition? Thanks!
Hi Alex, I really enjoy your videos. They are very informative and have saved me a lot of time looking through an owner's manual. I just bought a 2023 Outback and was very unhappy when I couldn't play my ipod even though the car offers an ipod/iphone connection. So I put my audio books on a USB drive which works until I connect my iphone to Carplay at which time the USB option is disabled and I can't access my audio books. My question is how can I access the USB function to play the audio books if I have the iphone connected to Carplay. Thanks.
Great Video! Love all your videos!! If you have a car full of people and you want your call to be private, is there a way to do this? I had a call come in and did not want everyone in the car hearing my conversation. I just got a 2024 crosstrek.
Hello, Alex! Thank you very much for your spot-on assistance with my 2022 Forester Wilderness - Lizzie! One Question: When I got the car, I had an Apple 12 Pro Max, which I successfully synced to my car for the Apple Car Play. Now I have a new Apple 15 Pro Max, which due to your video, I was also able to successfully sync to the car. How do I remove the old phone from the car and Apple Car Play? Thank you very much.
In the phone app on the infotainment screen where you added your new phone, there should be an edit button. Press to select and delete any phone you want. Or use the Subaru hammer located underneath the driver's seat!
Great videos Alex, just bought a 2024 Forester Wilderness and we just love it. Question regarding navigation using my Android smartphone ... do I need to have data enabled on the smartphone to use Google Maps navigation?
Hi Alex, Received my 2024 outback touring XT this morning...yay! Question...sitting with the car off at the park, received a call and it came through the car speakers for just a certain length of time and then stopped coming through the speaKers?? Does the car need to be on...same with the radio. Played for a while when car was off but then turned off?? Thanks for any insight.
Going to try to set this up this week on my new 2022 Outback Limited. It was pretty cumbersome to pair my phone via BT on my 2012 Outback. The onboard Navigation is okay, but not as good as WAZE and I imagine it has to be frequently updated.
Love your videos, I've seen everyone of them and it's helped tremendously. My question is in our 2022 Forester my wife and I both have our phones paired to the car since we both drive it. When we both get in the Forester, will it only connect with one phone, and who's phone will it connect to? Is there a way to tell it to do one phone over the other?
Thanks Michael! It’ll connect to the last phone it was most recently connected to and only connect to one at a time. When connected, if you click on phone and then “manage devices” to the bottom left of the screen you can switch between your phone and her phone by clicking on the one you want to be connected.
What vehicle features are getting paywalled in the 2024 Outbacks? If I understood the brochure correctly, a Starling subscription is required to use the climate control system after 3 years? I currently have a 2015 Outback with XM radio and I am willing to accept the $100 per year annual fee. Is the base model the best way to go to avoid paying twice for the same features?
Any suggestions for Android Auto not connecting automatically? Sometimes my phone will connect right away, other times I have to plug my phone into the USB to get it to connect to Android Auto. My phone app is up to date, and we got our 2023 Outback in November.
Thanks, Alex. I've watched a bunch of your videos and they are very helpful. I have a '23 Forester and I have connected my iPhone but it is listed as "iPhone 2". Is there anyway I can change the name?
Thank you Kathy! Yes, this can be changed. Just requires that you do it through your iPhone. Select Settings > General > About > Name. Once you're there you can delete "iPhone 2" and change it to whatever name you prefer. You'll also need to delete it from your car and reconnect to display the correct name on your car's touch screen. Hope this helps!
Other than pulling over to stop or keeping your phone close by, is there any way while on Bluetooth to respond to a selection request (as in question request of driver to select 1, select 2, etc.)?
I recently used Google Maps to navigate from Pennsylvania to Virginia. When I was navigating, I used data, maybe .5 GB one way. When my USB was connected but not navigating, I used no data. There were times when we were already at our destination we searched for gas, food, etc and used a tiny bit of data. The entire five day trip we used 1.5 GB of data.
Hello, I’m not sure if you can help me, but here’s my question. In February, I bought a iPhone 15 Pro Max. I’ve never had any problems connecting my older iPhone 13 to my 2021 Subaru Forester sport, but for the life of me, I cannot connect to CarPlay. It is connected to Bluetooth and I can get incoming and I can place outgoing calls, but my music and my audiobooks skip all the time. I can listen to the radio and get incoming calls and outgoing, but no CarPlay. My daughter gets in my car, plugs in her phone and it works fine. She has a iPhone 14, so something with the software must’ve changed between the 14 & the 15. Can you help? Thank you
Another great video, and timely since my Forester is arriving in a few weeks! Any tips or accessory recommendations for how to store your phone when connected via USB? It seems like that cable just drapes everywhere when you tuck it into the cubby, or you have to have your phone upside down if you put it in a cup holder. What do you like using for a phone holder?

Great videos. Thanks so much. I have a new 2022 Forester and it’s a great car. One thing I’m disappointed with is the lack of space for phones and other stuff. The car includes two USB ports but no room for the phone! Not a dealbreaker, I bought the car, but seems like a major oversight and a minor annoyance that will keep on giving for the life of the car.
Thanks Harry! I agree on the lack of phone space. Subaru didn't seem to design the car with phone storage in mind. Hopefully this gets better with future models
Hi Alex Q: noticed in Crosstrek wilderness 24 a note the other day “do you want a detail weather report” click Y or N…? I by passed it by mistake. Where can I find it again? Or is there a weather reports App dedicated for such need? Thanks A. 🙏🏻
Thank you for your videos Alex. I wonder if you can help me. I have a 2019 Subaru Outback, and just got the head unit replaced with the same head unit after it failed. Now when I plug my Android phone into the USB it charges, but neither the car or phone realize they are connected to each other by cable and Android Auto remains greyed out on the car's display. I have tried multiple cables, as the dealer suggested. They also suggested to have Android Auto forget the car, which it seems to have already done on its own, though I again clicked to forget all cars multiple times. Could you please help?
I have a 2017 base model impreza I only have usb under the armrest will that work for Android Auto? I've tried a few times and never can get it to work. Thanks for the great videos
Great tips...thank you! One question please. We just purchased a '22 Outback Touring model...why is the Google map display from my Android phone a lot smaller than your I-Phone? It's about 1/4 of the screen. Am I missing something in my set up?
Hi, Alex - love your videos, and I have a question regarding the phone favorites. I paired my iPhone 12 to my 2021 Forester and have downloaded my phone contacts for hands-free calling. But I can’t set my Favorites from my contact list. I realize that each contact should have a star to the left of the name, but my list doesn’t have any stars, so I can’t click a contact to save it to my favorites folder. Any advice?
Hey Alex. I got new iPhone 15 plus but it won’t allow me to use CarPlay on my Subaru Outback 2021. Car play is grayed out in car. Worked great with my old iPhone 12 but now I can’t get anything. Any suggestions?
I have a 2017 Subaru Outback and am trying to get CarPlay to show google map. Even after listening to your UA-cam I have not had any luck. Can you help please?
Hi Alex. I'm new to your channel. I am in the process of changing my car! My two favs are the Forester or the Outback! I just have one question (maybe you already answered this question before - still haven't seen them all!) WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SEATING POSITION OF THE TWO ABOVE-MENTIONED CARS? I love a high seating position! Thanks in advance for your responce!
The seating position on the Forester is going to be a little higher than the Outback. Here’s a video I made highlighting the major differences between the two: ua-cam.com/video/yyA4PQHLfgk/v-deo.html
Just bought a 2025 Forester. There is a specific spot on a street I drive where apple car play briefly disconnects every time when I’m playing Spotify. Any suggestions? I’ve heard of others having the same issue. It’s almost like someone has a WiFi jammer on that specific spot on the that street.
Hi Alex, You are making great informative videos. I don't know if I understood well. My cuestion is: Will 2023 Subaru Forester have wireless connection? Thank you...
I have a 2025 Legacy Touring XT. I have paired my phone abd Apple Play works fine. My problem is MySubaru won.t work. It's on the car's screen, but MySubaru is not a choice when I go to my phone's setting, general, CarPlay, customize. I can seem to add it. Can you help?
I have a 2017 outback. The apps do not even come up on my screen. Cannot figure out how to connect and have text voice in my car so I don’t have to read it on my phone while I’m driving.
Hi Alex! Thanks for the video. I have been following your channel for quite some time now. Great channel. Helps me a lot on my decision of getting a Subaru. Just got my 2022 subaru outback xt limited. Loving the car! Only think is that I'm a Android user and I'm just able to use half of the screen on the infotainment system with android auto. My wife's phone is an iPhone and it's able to utilize the whole screen. Any idea when subaru is pushing this update to Android auto as well? I contacted Google thinking this could be an missing update from Google, however, apparently this update has to come from the Subaru (or whoever designed the infotainment system). Thank you. Cheers!
@@arielspalter7425 I used iPhone in the past, but did not like the IOS per say. I'm a tech guy and I love all the freedom that an open source software provide. Also, iPhone still not delivering a lot of features that I use on the daily basis, like multitask screen, where I can have 2 apps open at the same time. Reverse wireless charger, that saves me many times on the go with my accessories, charging etc. My entire home is google base, so moving to iPhone would be too much of a hassle for me. Hope Subaru can figure this out soon.
Hey Bruno! Thanks for following and congrats on your new Outback! I'm not sure when the Android Auto update will come. I've heard this is actually limited by the developer (Android/Google). Apple allows us to display in portrait mode but Android currently does not. Hopefully this will be fixed soon though!
Hi Alex, not sure if you can help me figure this out but for some reason the 'mirror my phone' setting is turned off on my screen, had to manually set the clock after DST began (i don't live in the US) do you know how to enable that? thanks!
Alex, My starlink touch screen goes from glitching and bouncing about apps and has formed bubbles. I cannot use the head unit touch screen. Even using the radio dials is not fixing the selection of an app. The apps keep bouncing. I have showed this problem at the Subaru dealership, they said the headboard is defective and this is a common problem. I bought a warrantied new subaru from the Subaru dealership. Car has not even 12000 miles on it, when this problem started. This is a Subaru legacy 2019. It is a terrible situation when driving. I cannot use maps or listen to directions as the apps keep switching by itself. Any recommendation on how to fix this?
Hi Alex, All of a sudden my 2022 Outback says “messages not available” when synced with my iPhone. I’ve removed phone & reinstalled . I swore my husband changed something because he has his phone added as another user. Never an issue. Have any idea why I can’t get my texts in my car? Thanks
Ive had this issue too. It must’ve occurred with one of the IOS Updates. Any solution Alex? I also removed and reinstalled my phone and it didn’t help. It’s also not updating the clock time from the phone as it used to. Can you offer any help Alex? Thanks!
Depends on a few factors. Do you like the look of the 2023? Are you able to wait until they arrive? Are you ok with a higher price? These are all things to consider when waiting for the 2023 model. For me personally, I really like the 2023 and I think it's well worth the wait.
I could have used this video a week ago. I got a new IPhone and Apple care could not help me sync. They said it could only be done by plugging it in. I went to UA-cam to sync it.
Hi Alex Why do I always have to link my android phone to my new outback every time I drive?? I followed your instructions how to set up but when I get in my car says not connected?🥴 Frustrating.
I have a 2021 forester and a Samsung phone. Phone connects to Bluetooth but constantly loses the phone book. Phone is running latest OS. This has been happening since I got the car. Any ideas?
My husband and I both have the same android phone. We connected both of them but can not figure out how to rename the listing so we can tell the phone listings apart.
I have a Subaru legacy 2015 and a moto 5g 2022. The new phone can detect Bluetooth devices but it never sees the car and the car never sees it. Any suggestions on what to do?
Unique problem. 2020 Legacy. Update on Subaru map is the same as the vehicle; however, map update notification pops up every time car is turned on. But, if I delinked my iphone it no longer happens. I pair iphone again and it appears again. Dispair and stops.
I have a 2020 Subaru with the new USB-C connectors. They will not fit the USB plugs in the car. When I try to connect them, I get a message that says that the USB device has been disconnected. The USB plug will not work. I can not get the GPS map on the car screen from the phone unless I can plug the phone in.
I have a problem with my device and i saw it to on Your video. My XV do not recognize calling contacts and my phonebook is greyed out (just like in Your video). Any idea how to solve this problem? I have android device and contacts stored on google account (not on device).

Alex: looking for help with a Subaru annoyance. I do not subscribe to Satellite radio SiriusXM. Whenever you select "radio" icon on the display screen, it defaults to Sirius, that is annoying. Is there anyway to eliminate the "Sirius" option out of the rotation?
I've connected via Bluetooth and cable for Android Auto. Android Auto works fine, but when I choose Bluetooth AFTER using Android Auto I have to manually connect the phone and enable phone book download again in the Subaru settings...have you heard of this issue?
Sometimes on my 2019 Subaru Forester Limited, I will lose pairing connectivity and connection. Wired CarPlay doesn’t even work 50% of the time. 100% annoying when connection is lost.
I dont know if i'm the only one with this problem, i have an impreza 2017 and it will not pair with my android phone anymore. it paid once and it will not again
I can't be the only one that "thumbs up" all of Alex's videos before even watching them. I mean hey, you KNOW they are going to be good!

I just have one question (maybe you already answered this question before - still haven't seen them all!)
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SEATING POSITION OF THE TWO ABOVE-MENTIONED CARS? I love a high seating position!
Thanks in advance for your responce!
The seating position on the Forester is going to be a little higher than the Outback. Here’s a video I made highlighting the major differences between the two: ua-cam.com/video/yyA4PQHLfgk/v-deo.html
@@alexpmo thanks a million!!!! Really appreciate it!!
@@duncanmifsud6537 you’re welcome!
I have a 2015 Forester and it doesn't have a dash display like you have demonstrated.
Losing patience trying to pair an iPhone 14 to it. 😢
Thank you! The 2023 doesn’t have wireless CarPlay/android auto but we might see it in the 2024. The 2024 Forester should be out later this year!
@@alexpmo Thank you very much for your quick reply...
Is there a way to have 2 phones connected to Bluetooth simultaneously?
Can you connect 2 phone's to Bluetooth at the same time? I have a 2020 Outback. I thought this was a feature but can't find how to set it up.
It’s the chord
Go into the dealership
Alex, can you add your phone to a driver profile.
Thank you. Cheers!
This half screen nonsense made me switch to iPhone.
I have a 2018 forester without nav or starlink. How can I view google maps on the screen? Bluetooth has been paired between car and iPhone. Thanks.
Hi Alex,
not sure if you can help me figure this out but for some reason the 'mirror my phone' setting is turned off on my screen, had to manually set the clock after DST began (i don't live in the US)
do you know how to enable that?
I need further explanation - how to download the contacts.
Thanks!
Should I wait for the 2023 with the wireless carplay? Also, the upgrade eye-sight, new information screen and anyother additional added to 2023 model?
Depends on a few factors. Do you like the look of the 2023? Are you able to wait until they arrive? Are you ok with a higher price? These are all things to consider when waiting for the 2023 model. For me personally, I really like the 2023 and I think it's well worth the wait.
@@alexpmo Ok, any estimate time frame for the wait? I like the 2023 look and don't mind IF only minimal higher price lol......
Is this also possible for a 2014 forrester?
My 2022 Forester limited keeps loosing my phone book and favorites so I have to keep adding my Android over and over again. Any idea why ?
Alex, how do I create a shortcut on my 2021 Subaru Cross Trek
( on the display screen for someone from my phone book?
Example: wife’s name…..)
Does the phone sit well on that pad area while driving? It looks like it will fly right off.
I could have used this video a week ago. I got a new IPhone and Apple care could not help me sync. They said it could only be done by plugging it in. I went to UA-cam to sync it.
Alex I have a 19 forester. My speakers no longer work. Neither the stereo or the navigation have audio 🤔.
Thank you so much Alex
How does a person add favorites to the Ascent phone app?
Hi Alex
Why do I always have to link my android phone to my new outback every time I drive??

How do you remove old calls? I dont want to factory reset the car all the time
Subaru 2019 Legacy limited having trouble with iphone calls i can hear but my voice doesn’t come through to my caller.

As soon as I unplugged my iPhone the Apple car play app is greyed out on my Subaru screen and won’t load.
Can you put on directions without pluging into the car?
Yes, for most models 2023 and newer you can wirelessly display your phone on the touch screen. What model are you asking about?
