Off subject here...but I have to tell you and your followers about what happened to me. The weather became severe here where I live..North Idaho. I became extremely ill with Covid the first of January. I stayed sick for 3 weeks. The temperature dropped into the minus digits and 3 feet of snow dumped on the area. I am an older person...74 years old..live alone..weight. maybe 100 lbs. Feeling somewhat better..I had to go to the pharmacy and grocery store. Went out to my 2018 Subaru Forester..that I had purchased 2 months ago. Cleaned off the windshield and such. The snow in my drive way was 3 feet deep...12 feet long with a snowplow berm. I warmed up the car...Sat in it and asked my car now what should I do. X MODE. So I pressed the button..put her in reverse...and simply drove out of my driveway and onto the street. Went to the store..came home. After putting much needed groceries away..I sat and prayed..thanking God for my wise choice of vehicle.. Best purchase I have ever made...saved my life. May be a tad dramatic..but it was at the time. Oh I want a little hoodie for my Subaru. Can you provide any information?

I know how the snow here can be deposited on the floor boards for months out here. I appreciate all the technology put into this car...although most of it is mystifying to me. I will learn it all.👍🏼😁
I've heard a lot of Subaru owners saying similar things about their Subaru's conquering deep snow without issue...A friend of mine had an 87 Subaru GL 4x4 wagon several years ago, back when they had a 2 speed transfer case in them still....we took that thing hunting several times, Elk hunting was always the worst as by that time the snow was getting pretty deep. We were going through a couple feet of snow with his Subaru.....worst thing was, he was too cheap to buy tires...his tire purchase consisted of going to a pick a part yard, and buying 4 of those donut temporary spare tires and using them...that's what was on the car when we took the thing hunting LOL. I was like man what would this car do if you actually put a real set of tires on it...2 feet of snow on temporary spare tires with marginal tread at best. I want a Subaru Forester Wilderness, after seeing some video reviews on them I think it would be a great vehicle option for my needs, every now and then I do go camping and the Subaru would definitely get me into the areas I'd go...my 87 2WD Ford Ranger gets me in and out of those areas now, so a Subaru shouldn't have any issue at all.
I’ve owned 6 Subarus, still have 2 of them. Until a few years ago I would have all servicing done at my dealer. They changed owners, things changed, I now get most maintenance and basic service work done at another smaller family owned business … but I digress. TIP - if you have several warning lights on and adaptive cruise control, collision alert system etc isn’t working …. Tighten the gas cap! Yes you heard that right. A loose gas cap can defeat your cruise control among other things. I took it to my dealer, they tightened my gas cap and they charged me $100 for tech time and analysis.
I totally agree. Took my 2017 forester in for a noise coming from the back wheels. Well it was the rear wheel bearings. $185 later, really!! On top of that they wanted $1400 more to replace them. So bought my own wheel bearings from Subaru for $350 and changed them my self, thank you you tube.
That’s just shady. They shouldn’t have charged you anything for that. All that does is discourage people from coming back. My wife and I just bought a 23 Ascent from CarFax. We were hesitant to use them, but it only had 6500 miles on it and we knew we had 10 days to return it, and 30 to have them fix anything we found wrong with it. This is our first Subaru, so we found the most reputable shop in our area, RooPair. They only work on Subaru’s and are very well reviewed. My wife took it in to them for a full inspection without me because I was unavailable on the day we scheduled. Even being a woman alone, they looked over the whole car, told her she had a brand new car in perfect shape, and didn’t charger her a dime! They just asked her to come back to them for service in the future. That’s how you earn business, not by charging someone to tighten their gas cap.
Our 2021 Forester Touring had some added owner cost items done. Paint protection .. good for 5 yrs. Door bumper guards. Interior seat protective finish. Prepaid extended service warranty.. car is hand washed regularly. After 3 yrs, it still looks brand new!
As much as I appreciate having the all-weather liners in my 2024 Outback Limited XT, I opted to replace those with WeatherTech HD all-weather FloorLiners, in both front and back. They are far superior to those provided by Subaru-the rubber is denser, so they don’t flop around, and laser-accurate. Plus, they cover more area, riding up the side significantly higher around the perimeter. As far as the ones in the rear, unlike the Subaru brand that comes in two separate pieces, the WeatherTech FloorLiner is a one-piece mat, which means it even completely covers the small hump, which otherwise gets worn out more quickly on the corner edges. Comparing the original all-weather liners to these WeatherTech FloorLiners, the WeatherTechs are significantly better at keeping overflow from spilling onto and dirtying up the carpet, as they ride higher around the perimeter and cover more area. Oh, and they are “laser measured,” not “laser cut.” Regardless, the fit and finish are stellar! Enjoy your new WeatherTech FloorLiners.
Here's a simple thing that I often do when my wife leaves my Forester to get something in a store that I'm not needed with. I keep a 1-1/2" paintbrush, (I had a nice looking round brush artistic brush but lost it somewhere), in the center storage compartment. When time allows, I get the brush and brush the dust off anything I can see that needs attention. That simple action keeps my frontal area looking great!

HAH! Yes, be careful about the gas. Overfilled my charcoal filter and had to have it replaced. Luckily under warranty. Also, don't put too much weight and pressure on the gas pump when pumping gas as it can bend the tank opening in the car and also cause an EVAP leak. Ask me how I know? Well it's happened to my Subaru. Anyways, I'm happy it was all taken care of by warranty and still love my Crosstrek nevertheless! As to the floormats. Some people may benefit from getting aftermarket mats from Husky or Weathertech which offer more coverage than the OEM ones. Nice video, Alex!
Love your videos. Auto stop/start is crap. No other way to put it. And the fact that it resets and defaults after each trip makes it that much worse. I’ve saved a total of 6 gallons in 3 years. Ridiculous. Most every owner hates that function and yet Subaru continues to make it standard. It’s a feel-good feature that really doesn’t amount to much at all.
Auto stop start blows, eye sight is do bad I put paper over the eyes. Seatbelt trick saved my life, I was going to drive this car into a wall with all of these ‘safety’ things.

Bought the last of the manuals and real car, 2023 Crosstrek Premium. Most of these features are not available, on the manual, especially the stop start feature. I bought a car not a mobile infotainment system with overreaching driver controls. Sorry for the edit but I just had to add. I have heard rumors of the ECM keeping track of the start/stop feature. Once the computer hits a certain number of start/stops it trips a code to replace the starter. A dealer will give you no option but replace the starter good or not. Something that I heard.
I have a 2018 Crosstrek base model with a manual trans. I told the local dealer not to install the option that they put on every car as standard, which blinks the brake lights initially when applied. I though it was superfluous, and certainly not worth the extra $200 they charged for it. The only other inconvenience was the "hill holder" feature. It made it more difficult to execute a smooth launch when it auromatically engaged, and I've driven manual transmissions since 1976, so I know how to avoid rolling backwards. I found a UA-cam video of how to disable it, which worked, but now I have an orange warning light on in my instrument cluster as long as the car is running. I have learned to ignore it.
Thanks for the video. Subaru needs to eliminate the stop/start button. Total BS. Minor inconvenience but it ruins your engine!! Always remember to turn it off!! The worst thing is Subaru needs to start listening to their customers!!! Drivers should be able to have the garage take out anything in the program the customer requests. Just have it documented in the work order. Weather Tech mats are much better than the Subaru all weather mats. Cheers!
Thanks for your videos. I also hate the auto stop function. The best thing Subaru can do is set the default to NO auto off and if you want to enable it, you can push the button to turn it on. I've installed an inverter in my car to do just that. Now the default is off. If I want to turn it on, I just touch the button and I can give my starter some more exercise and chew it up in stop and go traffic. I sure hope when the starters fail that Subaru will cover the replacement costs for a new starter.
Your videos have been an immense help in learning about my 2021crosstrek sport. This is my first car and ideally, I'd like to take all the steps to maximize good experiences with my Subaru. Just want to say thank you very much!
First thing I did on the 21 Forester was install an auto start/stop eliminator. Not a hard install and I still can turn the feature on if I ever want to remind myself why I spent $100 bucks on the eliminator.
The auto/stop feature has almost caused us 2 close call accidents. Not worth the wear and tear on the car and a potential crash Been using the auto stop elimination device now for two years. So far no issues.
There are tree huggers out there.. That is their right to keep it on. As for me, I would gladly like to see Subaru eliminate the Start/stop feature. Have a recall to put a elimination device installed. Good to hear that your auto stop device has caused no problems. I did not buy a Touring XT with the turbo to get lag from some tree hugging device! In a week of my new 2024 Touring I have only forgot to shut it off once so far. I was certain that Alex was going to tell us that to save the life of the Subaru, SHUT THE AUTO STOP BUTTON OFF before driving. Was disappointing when he promoted using it, showing us all how much gas he "saved" while destroying his engine. (beefed up expensive battery and starter..) UMMM Lets create a device that turns your car on when it is in gear. Come to a stop in your parking space? The car shuts off. Take foot off the brake to re start the car to put it in park so you can shut the car off again. Ridiculous!! Using Auto Vehicle hold? Come to a stop and able to take foot off brake and the car shuts off? Tap on the gas to disengage AVH to turn car back on? Oh that sounds safe! I came to a stop to start to back up while turning the wheel to start into the turn to start backing up when car shuts off, took foot off brake, carstarts, lurches in reverse, whipping the steering wheel around catching my hand in the steering wheel. Glad your permanent solution to turn this crap off has not given you a problem in 2 years! Where is my check book?!
Auto stop has almost killed me. I went to pull out in traffic and I had enough time until the car didn't move and then once it started and took off if was too late to make it. My quick reaction to slam on the brakes saved my life. It happened twice, I have the auto stop eliminator now for SAFETY reasons.
ASS eliminator was worth every penny. No annoying button to push everytime the car is started, no annoying sudden stop when forgetting to push it, and no worries about a hot turbo engine bearings being starved of oil at the wrong time. Longer lasting battery and starter too.
If subaru cared so dam much they would let you set up the car the way you want it and leave it like that. These so called small inconveniences have almost caused me several accidents much frustration and I will do what I need to do to stop them. So it's really Subaru and other car manufactures making very unsafe cars and forcing there idiology on use.
That auto start stop button may save fuel, but it also causes more expensive battery replacements which occur far more often using start stop. I put 88,000 miles on a Mercedes that had no button to stop that function and went through to a 3rd main battery and a 2nd alternate battery during that time. Cost me a heck of a lot more that way that a few gallons of gas would cost. Plus my wife does not like the hesitation it causes when leaving from a light she is stopped for as it restarts. So glad in the 2024 Crosstrek we have that little button to push stopping that function.

Great video Alex. We purchased a 2019 Forester, new. As part of the sale, the dealer included the first few oil changes at no additional cost. I have always done my own maintenance, so after the free oil changes I am now changing the oil myself. One thing that really turned me off was when I got my last free oil change, the staff quoted me $350 for my next oil and filter change. I am a believer that working people should be paid well and the owner of the dealership needs to make a profit. But, give me a break, it costs me about $35 to buy excellent oil and filter, and about 45 minutes to complete the work. One other point for the viewers: I live in Colorado, and the octane of regular gas here is 85. The manual states 87 required, and I always buy the 87. Unfortunately, many drivers do not.
@stevet6676 Hello. Your dealer HAS to buy certain VERY expensive equipment that you or your non-franchised local mechanic do not have. The $350 that your dealer wants to charge you is not unreasonable, its unavoidable. This is why I take my car to the dealer for certain jobs, but to my mechanic pal for others ... and then as if to prove my point, he categorically tells me upfront, "I can't do this job, or that job - take it to the dealer for that. Oil changes? - my buddy. I arrive at his shop with the oil and filter.
Those free oil changes on a new car are per their schedule. I used up mine before two years were out because of the dusty roads here. Still do oil changes every 3,000 miles, not their schedule.
@@katylowe3504 I'm with you on this. I watched a video of 2 Japanese auto engineers talking about protecting engines. They recommended every 4,000 mikes, that's what I do. I usually keep a car for a long time, and when I sell it I want to pass along a reliable car to someone.

I am super thankful for the way subaru does their auto on/off switch. I like having it on, except when I need to back into a parking space. The engine shutting off for just a second only to be turned back on again when I go into reverse bugs me. Im glad its easy to turn off when needed. Great video on how to not only maintain value of the vehicle, but just help it last longer.
I have my 10 year old Forrester and she's still going strong. What is disappointing is the hourly service charge when I took her to the Subaru Service department in NYC. They charge hourly for everything @ $170/hour. So that air filter they replaced, was $$190, that wiper, $180, and etc. I never stepped into a Subaru service center again. I learned to do the basics and have the professional local mechanic do the annual tune up and oil changes.
If anyone can't change the air filter or wiper blades themselves, then they deserve to get charged that. Same with the cabin filter in newer vehicles. It's crazy that anyone would pay someone to do it.
I wish Subaru had an easy on off button when you want to go through a drive-through car wash. Inevitably, I always forget to shut off the front collision warning system, and as my car is lining up onto the line to be pulled through I’m frantically trying to get That shut off. It would be nice if subaru would put just a quick on off button right on the main menu like they did for the auto start stop engine feature.
That seatbelt chime is such a kick in be ⚽️ 🏀! Sometimes I pick up the mail at end of long driveway and drive slowly without seatbelt on, the car will alarm like crazy even when I stop! I really really hate this feature! And I’m one to always wear a seatbelt btw.
You can easily turn off the seat belt chime when it’s not needed. You will have to do it again any time your battery is disconnected and then reconnected. While seated in the driver seat, put the car in accessory mode and then buckle and unbuckle the belt 20 times. That’s it.
That seatbelt chime is loud! I would be personally OK with the first, more quiet chime, but not the second round of loud! We need to ask Subaru to get rid of that loud ding. Good video!
I love my 2024 Outback. BUT Seatbelt alarm that goes off because of my dog or carrying things on rear seats isnt just annoying, it's dangerous. Inconsistent but persistent beeping and warning signals for 15 minutes strait is a hazard and one of very few complaints I have. Leave it on for the driver, but the center seat in the back? Common.
I've faced that also when our pup is in the second row. We usually keep her in her crate or we'll drop the seat back down and it doesn't go off. Alternatively, we use a harness that clicks into the seatbelt. That keeps it from beeping and also keeps her secured. Not a perfect solution, but there are ways around it.
Do you keep your dog restrained in the back seat? just curious as a dog of any size becomes a missile when you hit the brakes or in an accident. I am guilty of not securing stuff sometimes too though
Unused seatbelts can be clicked into their slots, thus eliminating most of the beeping. I keep my backseat and passenger belts clicked in to avoid any beeping if I have any heavy packages or bags sitting there.
Works - Turn the vehicle to the on position by either turning the key to the on (without starting it) or hitting the push to start button twice without touching the brake pedal. Buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt twenty (20) times in thirty (30) seconds. The seat belt chime is now disabled.
It's the middle seat that ticks me off - It's not easy to get to (hanging on the middle of the trunk roof) and it leaves a strap hanging in my rearview. I know this isnt a big deal for most people, just unnecessary. @@fernandoherranz4095
Maintenance is a general rule for all cars. I was hoping you mention how crucial it is to take care of the CVT and differential fluids at the correct intervals. Furthermore you could also have mention about the seat belt delete, just takes disconnecting the battery terminal off and reinstalling it, which resets it back to factory mode. You are correct about the ACC not functioning with the seatbelt off, but once the seatbelt is buckled, all safety tech is back online without needing to reset back to factory mode. Nonetheless, great job on the video.
I busted a tire recently had the spare installed and went to the dealer. The service writer told me that if there-s less than 3/32 wear difference between the new tire and the other three I don't have to replace all four. Replaced the damaged tire and went on my way.
That's is because when you get your tires rotated they should rotate all five tires if you have a full size spare. I know at my Dealer, they are unaware that I have a full size spare and will not rotate all five tires unless I tell them to.
I appreciate most of the recommendations, and thank you for that. However, regarding the AutoStop. . . . How much will an eventual Starter issue cost? I hate the AutoStop feature, and has become part of my "preflight" checks.
I live in Canada so got the super high wall all weather liner that covers the dead pedal to go over my Tuxmat liner. Expensive but great investment. My original carpets will be pristine.
I also have a full rear cargo area cover that folds out to cover the bumper for loading and unloading. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Took off the seat belt alarm, it drove me batty driving to my mail box in the boonies. Cruise control works just fine. Turned off the auto stop too also drove me batty! I don’t need that wear and tear on the starter and battery! AVH is pretty nice though at the drive through.
Regarding the auto start/stop, I find that when releasing the brake and the car starts it feels line the pads were stuck and release with a clunk. This doesn’t happen when the engine does not auto stop. It’s aggravating.
I was taught to set the tire pressure to the specifications on the lable on the door jamb not the tires. Tires are made for any vehicle but the vehicle engineers set the specific parameters.
Two things to add: When you wash your inside mats, I like to make sure they are dry before putting them back down on the floor. I don't want mold growing under there! Second, as mentioned below, the AutoStop is awful. By the time I went to pull out into traffic and the car re-started another car came along and almost creamed me. Plus, it'll shut off if I'm slowing and stopping for a stop sign, but doesn't want to shut off most of the time while waiting at a stop light. Starting a car uses as much fuel as idling for one minute (so I've read) and it seems to shut off for quick "pause" stops, but not when it makes sense at longer lights.
I regularly check the sunroof drain channels now, after learning the hard way about what happens if they block up. Every now and then I will roll the sun roof back check the front left and right corner drain holes making sure they are clear! Simple job, wish someone had told me about it early in my ownership. Also on my MY16 Outback, I can control auto stop by how I brake to a stop. Light braking pressure reduces the likelihood of the engine auto stopping. Once I’m stopped, if it looks like a long pause I just press harder on the brake pedal and that triggers auto stop. Lightening the brake pressure kicks the engine back to life.
Hey Alex, great video as always. One other really important item is tire replacement with the symmetrical AWD system. Drivers need to be aware if their tires are really warn and only replace one tire which is not consistent with the uniform diameter of the other 3 tires. This will cause damage to the AWD system. It will not show up right away; however after 10k-15k miles or more repairs to the system start showing up that cost more than what 3 additional tires would have cost.
Sorry to disagree but my ‘11 Forester experienced a ruined winter tire while vacationing in South Carolina. Tires were at least half worn ( warn?) . Took a week to get a new one (Hankook). Had no problem. Ran the same 4 tires the next winter . Traded the car at 220,000 km. Was using oil but drive train was fine.
This is true. When I first got my Subaru Outback I ran over a screw and i had to get that tire replaced because it damaged the sidewall driving short distance to change tire away from curve in the road. Luckily the shop I went to checked the new tire circumference with a string and it was close enough to the diameter of the rest of the 3 tires. The only drawback of the all wheel drive system is having to buy all 4 tires if tread is half worn and you blow a tire. Although there are sites online that say they will wear the one tire down to the circumference of the other 3. Probably costs you the same as buying a set of 4 tires.
Change the oil Every 5K miles and have your tires rotated at 5K miles as well. Subaru says to never change the CVT fluid. Our Subaru mechanic (he works on Subaru exclusively), says to replace the CVT fluid every 36K miles . Our Subaru mechanic does NOT change the fluid on the CVTs because the transmission anď the fluid have to be at a certain temperature. My wife’s Outback just had its 30K mile service completed, so this summer I’ll schedule an appointment with Subaru of Spokane for them to do the CVT fluid change. Have your mechanic or dealer change the rear differential and transfer case fluid done at 30K miles, as well as bleed the brakes. Subaru’s are temperamental so make sure you keep up with the maintenance. They’re not as good as a Toyota for longevity but they’re Superior in traction, safety and accident avoidance. At around 140K miles or so, your Subie engine will start leaking oil because Subaru is too cheap to install real gaskets in their engines, so the silicon “gaskets” break down and start leaking oil. Your mechanic will have to tear down your entire engine, scrape off all of the silicone “gaskets” and replace them with Real gaskets. Once this is done, your engine will easily last another 150K - 200K miles. If Subaru would start putting REAL gaskets into their engines from factory, they would last as long as a Toyota
All my vehicles have oil/filter changes every 3k...If I'm lucky I might put that many miles on a vehicle in a year LOL. I don't drive that far anymore....so I still do the old school 3k intervals...oil/filters are a heck of a lot cheaper than major mechanical failures/repairs. As for the CVT service, yep, definitely get that done never listen to dealers that say a fluid change isn't needed, course they say that they want you buying another car in a couple years when you blow your old one up by not doing the proper maintenance....wonder what the service manual says for a Subaru's CVT service...I bet it don't say the fluid is good for the life of the vehicle....well I guess if you total it in a year or less then that would be the case, but 36k, would be 1-2 years of driving for many drivers. I know my 08 Toyota Tundra's transmission service was similar to the Subaru...fluid had to be a certain temp before changing it or adding fluid, etc. That scenario has been around for a while now. I think the worst was my 08 Explorer...the check plug on the transmission was 2 inches away from the catalytic converter...so wearing high temp gloves was an absolute must to check the fluid level. Subaru isn't the only one that has oil leaks LOL...every Ford I've owned has leaked oil from somewhere...usually multiple places, but the odd thing has always been they're never low on oil or any other fluid though...so its like you are leaking but how and what for LOL.
Not sure why your mechanic can't do the cvt fluid change. Its super simple. Yes it has to be brought to operating temp before you can make sure the fluid level is correct. You simply fill it up with the amount drained, then you run the car for a bit. Then you check fluid level.
@@simd510 He won’t touch the CVT. I don’t blame him. Personally I think that a CVT is a POS transmission that robs an engine of hp, torque and mpg. It’s cheaper for the manufacturer to build them but when they fail, their “Valued Customers” get 🖕🏽because no one can rebuild them and it costs the customer $8K - $9K for a new one
@@wildbill23c we have a 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4WD with the 4.0L V6 and 5spd automatic transmission with 3.55 gears in the rear differential with limited slip. It has only 36K miles and is mainly used for work around our property. I change the oil and filter every 6 months (which is about 1K -1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic oil. When it hit 30K miles I had the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid changed. Every 3 years I back flush the radiator and add new antifreeze. Yeah, when I used conventional oil, it was changed every 2500-3K miles, but now that I switched to full synthetic, I always buy “High Mileage” oil because it has additives that reduces wear. It says to change the oil every 10K miles, but on our cars, it’s every 5K miles as well as the tires are rotated during the oil change. I’m a maintenance freak too. I suppose that’s why we get so many miles from our vehicles.
I’ve mentioned this before. Subaru Canada says to change the CVT and differential fluid every 100,000km . Subaru Japan even more often. I’ve changed mine twice in less than 200,000km.
Hi Alex! Thank you for these great videos. Fortunately, my wife and I do everything in this video correctly. If you remember, we've had a Forester Premium since Jan. 22nd 2022. On Jan. 6th (about 2 1/2 weeks ago, we traded it in for the 2024 Forester Wilderness. Love it, by the way. One thing people need to know is on any Subaru that has a full-size spare. At the 6000-mile service, the spare is rotated in to keep even wear on the tires. So, you are rotating 5 tires instead of 4. The last thing, if your Subaru has to be towed, it has to go up on a 4 wheel flatbed tow truck.
My 2024 forester wilderness has a tow hook in the front. I didn't really check so i'm not sure if it is on only one side or not but I found that very interesting. I also love my wilderness forester. And I also do everything in the video correctly (except maybe washing it, but I live in Florida so, we don't get snow. Love bugs might be an issue though), but I have had luxury cars (Audis & BMWs) with a lot of the safety systems that Suburu has so I learned a while ago not to "cheat" the systems. You don't want to mess up what might save your life.

@@Racer88I believe the Wilderness fullsize spare has a fullsize rim, meaning a 5 wheel rotation schedule, while the Onyx has a fullsize spare on a smaller rim, so it's still just for temporary emergency use only.
We bought WeatherTech floor liners for both our Outback and Forester. The sides are about 2” high. We purposefully bought my wife’s Outback with Warm Ivory interior, so the floor liners are dark Tan. Also my Forester has Saddle Brown Leather interior so the floor liners are Brown. Anything beats gloomy gray or Boring Black from the last millennium.
We had the factory Subaru rubber mats for our Crosstrek Sport. They are awful. Too small and where they punched holes to fasten the yellow Sport logo, they leaked salty water onto the carpet. We now have WeatherTech mats. Super good product!

I saw a video on how to disable that, so I asked the Subaru video poster how you can re-enable the seatbelt alarm after that. He said disconnecting the battery for 15 to 20 minutes will do it.
2015 Subaru Outback Limited 74k miles bought it brand new in 2015 changed the tranny differential oil for the cvt as per manual. Only changed oil and used the Subaru filters with the O ring . Unfortunately over the years you hear of engine problems with Forester and to a lesser extent Outback . Head Gaskets and oil burning are common in select engines . I think the body and frame help to keep the car with minimal issues since it likes rough terrain . IN Va we havent had snow since 2016 when I first bought the Outback had fun in snow with the Xdrive. Make sure you purchase from a rep with knowledge of the vehicle since many dealerships hire different levels of expertise and you dont want to get with a rep who cant even answer the basic questions ...this is not a hyundai.
Great video, thank you. I'm not quite sure if you mean to say it's important to service your vehicle (obviously yes), or whether it's important to reset your service interval reminder. I service my 2 Subarus so often and don't do the service interval reminder much, as I keep detailed records on a spreadsheet. I hate the ASS. I would rather keep the oil running through the engine; maybe if they had an electric oil pump to continue circulating the oil when the engine is shut off, they would be on to something great. We all should know that wear and tear occurs most during engine start. In your example of 6000 miles with some assumptions (25mpg, $2.80 average price per gallon): your average mpg went from 25mpg to 25.75mpg. Instead of using approximately 240 gallons, you used 233 gallons, with a savings of $19.60. That is less than 1/3 of a cent per mile. Obviously a generic calculation based on reasonable expectations from 14,000 miles driving my 2024 Outback Onyx XT, but I also do 90% interstate with cruise control engaged. A car that gets higher MPG has even less savings. And if you doubled the cost of the gas, you would get double the savings. In the example, that would be 2/3 of a cent per mile.
Great video. I must say Auto Start-Stop sucks! I don’t mind what it does, it does save fuel, I can’t get by when it starts. It lurches forward slightly. Every time, at every stop, at every light and is rather annoying. I would rather it just stay off always. But great video nonetheless. 😃
Tuxmat is superior to any other car mats on the market. They ship out of Canada and only took a couple days to get to me. I’ve had them in a couple cars now and will never go back to WeatherTech or any other brand. Far superior, and after I wipe them after sits on them, they look as good as new as when I installed them. I was able to install them myself and I love how high up on the sides they go, so no dirt gets down the edges like WeatherTech allows all the dirt from the gas pedal to go down the back whereas tux mat does not permit this. And they look stunning.
Alex, I would like you to address a problem with OB starting in model year 2020. I have a 2024 Subaru outback and we’ve noticed it people without a key can walk up to the passenger side as I approach the driver side (with the key in my pocket) and without me, touching the doorhandle, the passenger will touch their door handle and all doors will unlock. Remember I’m not touching door handle and yet all the doors will open when the passenger touches the doorhandle on their side. I recently spent four hours with the district manager of Subaru, and we found out that this happens all the time. If somebody approaches the door and tries it without the key fob near the driver door or passenger door, it activates the car’s “bubble” and then if the driver walks up only the driver’s door will open.
Can't agree with you more. Subaru needs to seriously reevaluate what they are doing here. Starting your engine is one of the most destructive things you do to it on a daily basis. As soon as you shut the engine off, the oil pump shut off and there is no longer positive lubricating pressure and fluid being forced to critical bearings...especially the turbo and the crankshaft. So stopping and restarting your engine repeatedly is just nonsense, more demand and ware on almost every part of the engine. All this to save a measly 7 gallons. The cost benefit isn't there.
From 🇨🇦 here. The all-weather mats are amazing. But fir winter I find the cloth mats are better. They soak up the moisture instead of letting it slosh around. If it is too cold most times we stop dumping the water ofc of the rubber mats. Then when you run the bi-level heat the cloth msts dry out and the interior stays frost-free.
Alex, I’ve been watching your videos for about 6 months. We recently bought a 2023 Ascent and your channel is a good resource for me to learn all the features. The question I have goes to tire chains. A call to my local Subaru service department yielded a definite “no”. The local tire shop here answered “maybe”. I can’t find anything in my owners manual about the use of tire chains. I wonder what you know about tire chains and Subaru. When I refer to tire chains I include cable and other traction devices. Thanks in advance for any info.
I've personally hated Auto Start Stop as in the end its extra wear on other components such as the starter or extra fuel upon startup. I haven't had any other issues using the auto start stop eliminator kit in my 2020 Outback and I've had the car since August of last year, had the eliminator kit since about October of last year.
Fuel injection doesn’t use that extra fuel when you start it. Hyper-milers have been shutting the car off for years without Auto-stop-start. It’s perfectly fine.
the seatbelt hack works good for silencing the alarm. the cruise control doesn't work unless you have your seatbelt on though, thats the catch. should have it on anyway.
Dealerships often try to scam customers. The, “Oh you need to do this or that at half the interval Subaru recommends” or my all time favourite, “your cabin air filter needs replaced, it’s a bargain at $100!” EXCEPT I just replaced it myself for $10 & then I advise them that fraud isn’t the best way to keep a customer coming back. Once your Subaru, or any other vehicle, is out of warranty find a reliable local mechanic & you will be well taken care of for years to come (& NEVER pay anyone to change either air filter, both can be changed by an 80 year old without issue in
they are only recommendations if we see something dirty we gotta recommend it you don't have to buy it and there is usually a video or photo of your filter for proof.
After watching your videos you have me wanting a Subaru, but not sure which one. I like the space of the outback and forester, I also like the sedan Legacy, the crosstrek looks nice too.
Drive one for a bit. The car will get on your nerves with all the buzzers, steering shakes, engine shut offs.....feels like living with an overactive and annoying friend that reminds you of the same things 10,000 times.

The auto start/stop on my 2023 Forester takes a pretty firm press on the brake pedal to activate, much harder than the auto brake hold. I don't know if that is normal, but I''m not heavy on the brakes under normal circumstances, so I have to press pretty hard on the brake to get it to activate once I reach a full stop. A normal stop will not do it.
First thing I did is get all weather mats and the big mat in the back. I live at the beach and doesn’t matter what I do sand gets everywhere especially with bodyboards and wetsuits thrown in the back. Thanks for all your tips!
the wear is on the starter, not the engine, and modern starters are made to handle auto stop/start for the life of the car so there should be no problems when used properly!
@@elliealbrecht1161 The wear on the internal engine components happens when you start the engine because there is the oil is in the pan and it has to be pumped sideways in a boxer engine. So when you come to a stop, the engine cuts out and the oil pressure drops and the oil begins to drain to the pan and the internal components are no longer oiled. The transmission oil in the torque convert stops turning. And if the traffic lights are light ours you could be there for 3 minutes, and the light turns green and the oil has to begin to flow again and there is that confound shuttler of the CVT spinning up, all for 7 gallons of gas in 6000 miles.
I drive my 2020 Outback about 8k miles a year and the battery has been replaced twice because of the OEM being too small, the alternator being undersized, and the parasitic draw from the Starlink system. Was suggested from dealership that I turnoff auto start/stop to keep the alternator charging and drive more… not sure I buy it. It’s too bad because I love the car, but am getting sick of a newish car leaving me stranded.

I use Chemical Guys Total Interior for the infotainment and cluster area. Aerospace 303 Protectant for the dashboard. And Wabam Ignite to touch up the exterior paint (bird poop, minor mud etc). I have Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra ceramic coating and the detailer recommended Wabam. All these work great!

TIP: Scan to your computer the Maintenance Schedule out of the Owners Manual. Place it in a Word file and then keep notes on when and where each schedule service is performed as well as all extra stuff like tires and battery. Oh, and my tip, unless you KNOW your dealer is awesome...use an independent shop for all non-warranty work. Indie Shops thrive or die on reputation.

One of my main gripes is the area around the gas and brake pedal. Plus all of the carpet that is left exposed along the sides. I'll look into Tuxmat!
Hi Alex! I love your videos. I asked for your input a couple years back when my lease was coming up on my 2019 outback and I took your advice and bought out my lease because I love my car so much. Last week while we were in New Jersey little dots appeared on my LCD screen or of nowhere but I couldn't wipe them away. I did some research and found out this is a very common Subaru problem and it is the screen delaminating? I am so upset as I have been told it will cost $1,500 to replace. I am also on my second windshield that is completely split from one side to the other. I continue to drive around like this because I am too afraid to replace it as I know it will crack again because of the ongoing Subaru glass issue. Do you have any tips to help me move forward? Do i keep replacing the windshield? Will Subaru help me with the delaminating screen? My car isn't even 5 years old and it's garage kept and babied. I'm just frustrated and thought you may have sone advice. I'm starting to feel like I should have just gotten a new car instead of keeping a headache but deep down I really do love my car.

6k miles is a good indicator to change your oil. However 6 months is a bit early since subaru uses full synthetic. No need to change at 6 months, I do mine once a year since i'm under 6k miles per year.
When my restart started getting rough I took it in for service. The battery was going bad. Since it was still under warranty, the dealer replaced it. Now I'm worried that autostart will run the new battery. I want to use the feature but have been turning it off because it is hard on the battery.
Just push the brake down enough to keep your car from creeping forward and the start/stop won't activate. The only time it activates is when folks try and push the brake pedal thru the floor.
Having a garage to park you car in at home makes a big difference. Even better if you have one at work, too. Other tips: change fluids/followaintanance schedule, try to avoid predpminantly short trips,(especially in cold weather), avoid eating/drinking in the car. I've only watched part of the video so far.
regarding the gas types; I used to have a 2018 crosstrek and after a couple of years using regular unleaded fuel it started getting very sluggish. someone at the dealership suggested to start using premium fuel and flooring it once in a while in the expressway and it got rid of the sluggishness and I never went back to regular. even now that i own a 2022 outback wilderness, i immediately started using premium and not risking it getting sluggish.
Premium (higher octane) fuel has a higher resistance to knock or pre-ignition. Using it in an engine not designed for it is wasting money. Always use a Top-tier fuel (you can Google this) as they have higher levels of detergent additives which can increase fuel economy and optimize engine performance. If you do mostly low speed (city) driving, going out on the highway every so often is a good idea.
Alex, although Start/Stop may save fuel, there are drawbacks. Increased wear on your starter and battery are the key negatives. Saving 7 gallons over 15 hours of the Stop function is not worth it. Subaru use the cheapest CCA battery it can (mine need replacement in the first 500 miles) and the constant restarting of the engine reduces the life of the starter according to many automotive experts.
Don’t forget to pick up some seat covers to protect against stains, pet hair, etc. A small investment but worth it IMO. Subaru sells branded seat covers too but these are overpriced.
Sheepskin seat covers work great, both in comfort and insulation. And replacing them after 125,000 miles is far cheaper than re upholstering the seats. I have only used the seat heaters a handful of times on my 2015 Outback when temperatures down to -20C at Whistler.
2022 Forester user here. At the same time, in Europe the recommended maintenance schedule is 12 months/15.000 km (~ 9500 miles). Where the difference is coming from?
Hate the auto stop function on new cars. The wear and tear on the starter and your engine will be far more expensive than the cost of the gas saved. Ask any engine mechanic and they will tell you that starting the engine is when the engine gets the most wear because of the lack of oil.
The worst function on any car. Even though you can turn it off, you have to it every time. Manufacturers should realize by now…..have a choice of using it or permanently shutting it off
It will while only saving you a minuscule amount of gas. My guess is they default it to on every time so it wears your engine out faster causing you to spend more
Auto start stop saves tenths of a gallon over a tank full but puts far more wear and tear on the engine. The most wear an engine ever sees is at start up. Oil is not flowing at crank. Why on earth would want that to happen everytime you come to a stop. Pleaes turn it off and seve your engine wear and tear. The gas savings will be far less in value than premature wear on eventual repairs when your engine warranty is over.
I bought a 2010 subaru Forester awd with the partial zero emissions. It runs great to have 182 k miles now but I'm curious about maintainance on the transmission and rear-end. The previous owner kept detailed records from brand new but there's nothing about those 2 items. Oh, and this suv will onlrun right with 93 octane or the slightly less ethanol free 90 octane. Anything else and the valves chatter.
My battery died in my 2022 Crosstrek after less than 2 years. The first time it would not start the weather was below zero here. I’m wondering if the start/stop function caused it to die so quickly??
It's probably not the ASS system. Subaru batteries are junk. Mine died twice 13 and 14 months into ownership. I replaced it with an AGM battery. Been fine since. 16 months. I was able to get Subaru to reimburse me. They are not cheap.

Many ppl will be prolonging 6k intervals bc subaru charges $100+ for oil changes/tire rotation. And close to $2000 for 60k interval schedule maintenance. To offset slow shop time they will try to upsell you services that are not necessary and is not needed at the moment. $30-50 to change cabin air filter etc. Also, pls tell subaru to get rid of this stupid stop/start decreasing emissions nonsense bs...pls. 🎉
A 6k service interval is just absurd. I would barely be outside the workshop if I would do that. I do an oil change every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. My car's service reminder starts complaining after about 12,000-13,000 miles.
I can afford reasonable pricing formula not hyperinflation and high markups just to get profits and sell what's not needed to those who is less educated or mechanically inclined. Pls note im not saying that 6k intervals are bad thing however. (So I end up doing these services myself)
Also saying don't buy a car in Kansas City is a pretty ignorant way of showing your superiority over those less fortunate or maybe in a difficult financial situation.
Alex I am enjoying catching up with your videos on the Subaru. We live in Ontario Canada. The models and trim packages in 24s and 25s seem to vary. We are in the process of making a purchase of an Outlander or a Forrester. I had hoped that you would identify the year and model/trim for the cars you show. But unless I just missed the info…I didn’t catch it. The general themes are great but knowing what car you are talking about would help us make a decision on which features are important to us.

Why are service intervals so short on cars in the USA? Do you run old-school mineral oils or something? Amazes me how often you seem to change oil over there! (this is not a dig, just an observation!). In the UK 12 months is the specified service interval, typically.
@@MultiVogonI never gauge an oil change by dates. Mileage only, as living in the U.S. is spread out over greater distances. I usually put 35,000 miles a year on my vehicles. The western portion of the United States excluding California, Oregon Washington state (huge states) have 4,900,000 km². If you add the state of the Alaska it is 6,620,000 km². So those in the UK or Europe have zero understanding of why our maintenance is different.
@@cherricrittenden894 I've spent a fair bit of time in the USA, I understand the differences well enough. You still seem to change the oil a lot more than we do, whether measured in time or mileage.
@@MultiVogontrue but the viscosity will change because of prolonged heat. Which means your motor is running longer at a higher RPM. It breaks down the oil.
Hey Alex need to check your tire pressure...front left wheel looks a little under inflated. In Canada we always need to check our tire pressure with the temp going up and down
I bought a 2024 Subaru Legacy Premium and did the very first oil change just after 1000 miles i was told that was recommended for break in oil change.....then go according to 6 months/6000 miles ....
There's nothing wrong or harmful about using the auto start-stop eliminator. The presenter works for a Subaru dealership and is creating content under the auspices of his employer, so he's of course going to not approve of anything that is aftermarket even if it does not pose a realistic risk.

I'm guilty of the seatbelt alarm disabling trick but all it took to fix my stupid and get my adaptive cruise control to work again......disconnect the battery for 5 mins and everything went back to normal
Has Subaru done anything to reduce chassis corrosion? My 2016 Legacy chassis became crusty after 8 years. Thinking to wash including under carriage wash in car wash once a month or so during the salt months to try and reduce this.
The auto stop is fine with very long stoplights. I so often try to start quickly when I have a traffic break. The Auto Off actually puts me in GREATER danger of an accident. Please find a way to set it off with occasional reminders to turn it back on. The amount of gas saved never reaches as much as 5 gallons of savings after months of use.
Seatbelt extensions will silence the alarm without "tricking" the system. Yes the alarm is annoying. It is especially annoying when you drive Uber and the alarm for the backseat is sounding all day.long. Some people are too big for the backseat seatbelts. Get seatbelt extensions if the alarm bothers you. They're safe and legal.
The Eliminator works perfectly. All it does is override the memory of the A-S-S system. And that system is a great way to destroy your engine long term, as well as the battery, by constantly dropping the oil pressure to zero by doing thousands of unnecessary hot (or worse yet, cold) starts.
Mandatory Auto Start/Stop is the one thing I absolutely hate about my car. This is the problem when boardroom virtue signaling activists get involved with engineering. It seems to go off at the worst times and I definitely don't want it turning off when it's -20°.
I have had my 2022 Forster for a little over one year. Last night I went out to my garage and heard a humming noise coming from underneath my vehicle. I had no idea what could have occurred, came inside looked it up on YT to find that this is normal(?). Alex, have you addressed this on a video and perhaps I missed it? Love my Forester and enjoy your videos.
Thete are devices sold that remember that you turned it off last time and autumn's several the signal to turn it off each time you start your car it's as if you hit the button every time you start the car.

Makes no sense. Many European cars sold in the USA do the same thing. Culturally USA had 3,000 mile intervals and its a way for dealers to make money.

Off subject here...but I have to tell you and your followers about what happened to me. The weather became severe here where I live..North Idaho. I became extremely ill with Covid the first of January. I stayed sick for 3 weeks. The temperature dropped into the minus digits and 3 feet of snow dumped on the area. I am an older person...74 years old..live alone..weight. maybe 100 lbs. Feeling somewhat better..I had to go to the pharmacy and grocery store. Went out to my 2018 Subaru Forester..that I had purchased 2 months ago. Cleaned off the windshield and such. The snow in my drive way was 3 feet deep...12 feet long with a snowplow berm. I warmed up the car...Sat in it and asked my car now what should I do. X MODE. So I pressed the button..put her in reverse...and simply drove out of my driveway and onto the street. Went to the store..came home. After putting much needed groceries away..I sat and prayed..thanking God for my wise choice of vehicle.. Best purchase I have ever made...saved my life. May be a tad dramatic..but it was at the time. Oh I want a little hoodie for my Subaru. Can you provide any information?

I've heard a lot of Subaru owners saying similar things about their Subaru's conquering deep snow without issue...A friend of mine had an 87 Subaru GL 4x4 wagon several years ago, back when they had a 2 speed transfer case in them still....we took that thing hunting several times, Elk hunting was always the worst as by that time the snow was getting pretty deep. We were going through a couple feet of snow with his Subaru.....worst thing was, he was too cheap to buy tires...his tire purchase consisted of going to a pick a part yard, and buying 4 of those donut temporary spare tires and using them...that's what was on the car when we took the thing hunting LOL. I was like man what would this car do if you actually put a real set of tires on it...2 feet of snow on temporary spare tires with marginal tread at best.
I want a Subaru Forester Wilderness, after seeing some video reviews on them I think it would be a great vehicle option for my needs, every now and then I do go camping and the Subaru would definitely get me into the areas I'd go...my 87 2WD Ford Ranger gets me in and out of those areas now, so a Subaru shouldn't have any issue at all.
I’ve owned 6 Subarus, still have 2 of them. Until a few years ago I would have all servicing done at my dealer. They changed owners, things changed, I now get most maintenance and basic service work done at another smaller family owned business … but I digress. TIP - if you have several warning lights on and adaptive cruise control, collision alert system etc isn’t working …. Tighten the gas cap! Yes you heard that right. A loose gas cap can defeat your cruise control among other things. I took it to my dealer, they tightened my gas cap and they charged me $100 for tech time and analysis.
I totally agree. Took my 2017 forester in for a noise coming from the back wheels. Well it was the rear wheel bearings. $185 later, really!! On top of that they wanted $1400 more to replace them. So bought my own wheel bearings from Subaru for $350 and changed them my self, thank you you tube.

That’s just shady. They shouldn’t have charged you anything for that. All that does is discourage people from coming back. My wife and I just bought a 23 Ascent from CarFax. We were hesitant to use them, but it only had 6500 miles on it and we knew we had 10 days to return it, and 30 to have them fix anything we found wrong with it. This is our first Subaru, so we found the most reputable shop in our area, RooPair. They only work on Subaru’s and are very well reviewed. My wife took it in to them for a full inspection without me because I was unavailable on the day we scheduled. Even being a woman alone, they looked over the whole car, told her she had a brand new car in perfect shape, and didn’t charger her a dime! They just asked her to come back to them for service in the future. That’s how you earn business, not by charging someone to tighten their gas cap.

Our 2021 Forester Touring had some added owner cost items done. Paint protection .. good for 5 yrs. Door bumper guards. Interior seat protective finish. Prepaid extended service warranty.. car is hand washed regularly. After 3 yrs, it still looks brand new!
As much as I appreciate having the all-weather liners in my 2024 Outback Limited XT, I opted to replace those with WeatherTech HD all-weather FloorLiners, in both front and back. They are far superior to those provided by Subaru-the rubber is denser, so they don’t flop around, and laser-accurate. Plus, they cover more area, riding up the side significantly higher around the perimeter. As far as the ones in the rear, unlike the Subaru brand that comes in two separate pieces, the WeatherTech FloorLiner is a one-piece mat, which means it even completely covers the small hump, which otherwise gets worn out more quickly on the corner edges. Here's a simple thing that I often do when my wife leaves my Forester to get something in a store that I'm not needed with. I keep a 1-1/2" paintbrush, (I had a nice looking round brush artistic brush but lost it somewhere), in the center storage compartment. When time allows, I get the brush and brush the dust off anything I can see that needs attention. That simple action keeps my frontal area looking great!

HAH! Yes, be careful about the gas. Overfilled my charcoal filter and had to have it replaced. Luckily under warranty. Also, don't put too much weight and pressure on the gas pump when pumping gas as it can bend the tank opening in the car and also cause an EVAP leak. Ask me how I know? Well it's happened to my Subaru. Anyways, I'm happy it was all taken care of by warranty and still love my Crosstrek nevertheless!
As to the floormats. Some people may benefit from getting aftermarket mats from Husky or Weathertech which offer more coverage than the OEM ones.

Auto stop/start is crap. No other way to put it. And the fact that it resets and defaults after each trip makes it that much worse. I’ve saved a total of 6 gallons in 3 years. Ridiculous. Most every owner hates that function and yet Subaru continues to make it standard. It’s a feel-good feature that really doesn’t amount to much at all.
Auto stop start blows, eye sight is do bad I put paper over the eyes. Seatbelt trick saved my life, I was going to drive this car into a wall with all of these ‘safety’ things.

Bought the last of the manuals and real car, 2023 Crosstrek Premium. Most of these features are not available, on the manual, especially the stop start feature. I bought a car not a mobile infotainment system with overreaching driver controls. Sorry for the edit but I just had to add. I have heard rumors of the ECM keeping track of the start/stop feature. Once the computer hits a certain number of start/stops it trips a code to replace the starter. A dealer will give you no option but replace the starter good or not. Something that I heard.
I have a 2018 Crosstrek base model with a manual trans. I told the local dealer not to install the option that they put on every car as standard, which blinks the brake lights initially when applied. I though it was superfluous, and certainly not worth the extra $200 they charged for it. The only other inconvenience was the "hill holder" feature. It made it more difficult to execute a smooth launch when it auromatically engaged, and I've driven manual transmissions since 1976, so I know how to avoid rolling backwards. I found a UA-cam video of how to disable it, which worked, but now I have an orange warning light on in my instrument cluster as long as the car is running. I have learned to ignore it.
I wish all Subarus had the manual transmission option…
Thanks for the video. Subaru needs to eliminate the stop/start button. Total BS. Minor inconvenience but it ruins your engine!! Always remember to turn it off!! The worst thing is Subaru needs to start listening to their customers!!! Drivers should be able to have the garage take out anything in the program the customer requests. Just have it documented in the work order. Weather Tech mats are much better than the Subaru all weather mats. Cheers!

Thanks for your videos. I also hate the auto stop function. The best thing Subaru can do is set the default to NO auto off and if you want to enable it, you can push the button to turn it on. I've installed an inverter in my car to do just that. Now the default is off. If I want to turn it on, I just touch the button and I can give my starter some more exercise and chew it up in stop and go traffic. I sure hope when the starters fail that Subaru will cover the replacement costs for a new starter.

The auto stop start may save some fuel… but it certainly doesn’t save the extra wear/tear on the starter motor 🤷🏻♂️
It also wears down the battery.

First thing I did on the 21 Forester was install an auto start/stop eliminator. Not a hard install and I still can turn the feature on if I ever want to remind myself why I spent $100 bucks on the eliminator.

The auto/stop feature has almost caused us 2 close call accidents. Not worth the wear and tear on the car and a potential crash Been using the auto stop elimination device now for two years. So far no issues.
There are tree huggers out there.. That is their right to keep it on. As for me, I would gladly like to see Subaru eliminate the Start/stop feature. Have a recall to put a elimination device installed. Good to hear that your auto stop device has caused no problems. I did not buy a Touring XT with the turbo to get lag from some tree hugging device! In a week of my new 2024 Touring I have only forgot to shut it off once so far. I was certain that Alex was going to tell us that to save the life of the Subaru, SHUT THE AUTO STOP BUTTON OFF before driving. Was disappointing when he promoted using it, showing us all how much gas he "saved" while destroying his engine. (beefed up expensive battery and starter..) UMMM Lets create a device that turns your car on when it is in gear. Come to a stop in your parking space? The car shuts off. Take foot off the brake to re start the car to put it in park so you can shut the car off again. Ridiculous!! Using Auto Vehicle hold? Come to a stop and able to take foot off brake and the car shuts off? Tap on the gas to disengage AVH to turn car back on? Oh that sounds safe! I came to a stop to start to back up while turning the wheel to start into the turn to start backing up when car shuts off, took foot off brake, carstarts, lurches in reverse, whipping the steering wheel around catching my hand in the steering wheel. Glad your permanent solution to turn this crap off has not given you a problem in 2 years! Where is my check book?!
Auto stop has almost killed me. I went to pull out in traffic and I had enough time until the car didn't move and then once it started and took off if was too late to make it. My quick reaction to slam on the brakes saved my life. It happened twice, I have the auto stop eliminator now for SAFETY reasons.
ASS eliminator was worth every penny. No annoying button to push everytime the car is started, no annoying sudden stop when forgetting to push it, and no worries about a hot turbo engine bearings being starved of oil at the wrong time. Longer lasting battery and starter too.
If subaru cared so dam much they would let you set up the car the way you want it and leave it like that. These so called small inconveniences have almost caused me several accidents much frustration and I will do what I need to do to stop them. So it's really Subaru and other car manufactures making very unsafe cars and forcing there idiology on use.

That auto start stop button may save fuel, but it also causes more expensive battery replacements which occur far more often using start stop. I put 88,000 miles on a Mercedes that had no button to stop that function and went through to a 3rd main battery and a 2nd alternate battery during that time. Cost me a heck of a lot more that way that a few gallons of gas would cost. Plus my wife does not like the hesitation it causes when leaving from a light she is stopped for as it restarts. So glad in the 2024 Crosstrek we have that little button to push stopping that function.

Great video Alex. We purchased a 2019 Forester, new. As part of the sale, the dealer included the first few oil changes at no additional cost. I have always done my own maintenance, so after the free oil changes I am now changing the oil myself. One thing that really turned me off was when I got my last free oil change, the staff quoted me $350 for my next oil and filter change. I am a believer that working people should be paid well and the owner of the dealership needs to make a profit. But, give me a break, it costs me about $35 to buy excellent oil and filter, and about 45 minutes to complete the work.
One other point for the viewers: I live in Colorado, and the octane of regular gas here is 85. The manual states 87 required, and I always buy the 87. Unfortunately, many drivers do not.
@stevet6676 Hello. Your dealer HAS to buy certain VERY expensive equipment that you or your non-franchised local mechanic do not have. The $350 that your dealer wants to charge you is not unreasonable, its unavoidable. This is why I take my car to the dealer for certain jobs, but to my mechanic pal for others ... and then as if to prove my point, he categorically tells me upfront, "I can't do this job, or that job - take it to the dealer for that. Oil changes? - my buddy. I arrive at his shop with the oil and filter.
Those free oil changes on a new car are per their schedule. I used up mine before two years were out because of the dusty roads here. Still do oil changes every 3,000 miles, not their schedule.

I am super thankful for the way subaru does their auto on/off switch. I like having it on, except when I need to back into a parking space. The engine shutting off for just a second only to be turned back on again when I go into reverse bugs me. Im glad its easy to turn off when needed. Great video on how to not only maintain value of the vehicle, but just help it last longer.
I have my 10 year old Forrester and she's still going strong. What is disappointing is the hourly service charge when I took her to the Subaru Service department in NYC. They charge hourly for everything @ $170/hour. So that air filter they replaced, was $$190, that wiper, $180, and etc. I never stepped into a Subaru service center again. I learned to do the basics and have the professional local mechanic do the annual tune up and oil changes.

If anyone can't change the air filter or wiper blades themselves, then they deserve to get charged that. Same with the cabin filter in newer vehicles. It's crazy that anyone would pay someone to do it.

I wish Subaru had an easy on off button when you want to go through a drive-through car wash. Inevitably, I always forget to shut off the front collision warning system, and as my car is lining up onto the line to be pulled through I’m frantically trying to get That shut off. It would be nice if subaru would put just a quick on off button right on the main menu like they did for the auto start stop engine feature.

That seatbelt chime is such a kick in be ⚽️ 🏀! Sometimes I pick up the mail at end of long driveway and drive slowly without seatbelt on, the car will alarm like crazy even when I stop! I really really hate this feature! And I’m one to always wear a seatbelt btw.
You can easily turn off the seat belt chime when it’s not needed. You will have to do it again any time your battery is disconnected and then reconnected. While seated in the driver seat, put the car in accessory mode and then buckle and unbuckle the belt 20 times. That’s it.

That seatbelt chime is loud! I would be personally OK with the first, more quiet chime, but not the second round of loud! We need to ask Subaru to get rid of that loud ding. Good video!
I love my 2024 Outback. BUT Seatbelt alarm that goes off because of my dog or carrying things on rear seats isnt just annoying, it's dangerous. Inconsistent but persistent beeping and warning signals for 15 minutes strait is a hazard and one of very few complaints I have. Leave it on for the driver, but the center seat in the back? Common.
I've faced that also when our pup is in the second row. We usually keep her in her crate or we'll drop the seat back down and it doesn't go off. Alternatively, we use a harness that clicks into the seatbelt. That keeps it from beeping and also keeps her secured. Not a perfect solution, but there are ways around it.
Do you keep your dog restrained in the back seat? just curious as a dog of any size becomes a missile when you hit the brakes or in an accident. I am guilty of not securing stuff sometimes too though
Unused seatbelts can be clicked into their slots, thus eliminating most of the beeping. I keep my backseat and passenger belts clicked in to avoid any beeping if I have any heavy packages or bags sitting there.
Works - Turn the vehicle to the on position by either turning the key to the on (without starting it) or hitting the push to start button twice without touching the brake pedal.
Buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt twenty (20) times in thirty (30) seconds.
The seat belt chime is now disabled.
It's the middle seat that ticks me off - It's not easy to get to (hanging on the middle of the trunk roof) and it leaves a strap hanging in my rearview. I know this isnt a big deal for most people, just unnecessary. @@fernandoherranz4095

Maintenance is a general rule for all cars. I was hoping you mention how crucial it is to take care of the CVT and differential fluids at the correct intervals. Furthermore you could also have mention about the seat belt delete, just takes disconnecting the battery terminal off and reinstalling it, which resets it back to factory mode. You are correct about the ACC not functioning with the seatbelt off, but once the seatbelt is buckled, all safety tech is back online without needing to reset back to factory mode. Nonetheless, great job on the video.

I have used the auto start stop eliminator since 2019 in my Forester and it has worked perfectly without causing any safety system issues.
I busted a tire recently had the spare installed and went to the dealer. The service writer told me that if there-s less than 3/32 wear difference between the new tire and the other three I don't have to replace all four. Replaced the damaged tire and went on my way.
That's is because when you get your tires rotated they should rotate all five tires if you have a full size spare. I know at my Dealer, they are unaware that I have a full size spare and will not rotate all five tires unless I tell them to.
@@Golddragon214 A full sizespare won't fit in the spare tire well in my Crosstrek. I'd prefer a full-size, but I sometimes fill up the cargo bay.

I appreciate most of the recommendations, and thank you for that. However, regarding the AutoStop. . . . How much will an eventual Starter issue cost? I hate the AutoStop feature, and has become part of my "preflight" checks.
I live in Canada so got the super high wall all weather liner that covers the dead pedal to go over my Tuxmat liner. Expensive but great investment. My original carpets will be pristine.
I also have a full rear cargo area cover that folds out to cover the bumper for loading and unloading. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Took off the seat belt alarm, it drove me batty driving to my mail box in the boonies. Cruise control works just fine. Turned off the auto stop too also drove me batty! I don’t need that wear and tear on the starter and battery! AVH is pretty nice though at the drive through.
Regarding the auto start/stop, I find that when releasing the brake and the car starts it feels line the pads were stuck and release with a clunk. This doesn’t happen when the engine does not auto stop. It’s aggravating.
I was taught to set the tire pressure to the specifications on the lable on the door jamb not the tires. Tires are made for any vehicle but the vehicle engineers set the specific parameters.
Two things to add: When you wash your inside mats, I like to make sure they are dry before putting them back down on the floor. I don't want mold growing under there! Second, as mentioned below, the AutoStop is awful. By the time I went to pull out into traffic and the car re-started another car came along and almost creamed me. Plus, it'll shut off if I'm slowing and stopping for a stop sign, but doesn't want to shut off most of the time while waiting at a stop light. Starting a car uses as much fuel as idling for one minute (so I've read) and it seems to shut off for quick "pause" stops, but not when it makes sense at longer lights.
I regularly check the sunroof drain channels now, after learning the hard way about what happens if they block up. Every now and then I will roll the sun roof back check the front left and right corner drain holes making sure they are clear! Simple job, wish someone had told me about it early in my ownership.
Also on my MY16 Outback, I can control auto stop by how I brake to a stop. Light braking pressure reduces the likelihood of the engine auto stopping. Once I’m stopped, if it looks like a long pause I just press harder on the brake pedal and that triggers auto stop. Lightening the brake pressure kicks the engine back to life.
Hey Alex, great video as always. One other really important item is tire replacement with the symmetrical AWD system. Drivers need to be aware if their tires are really warn and only replace one tire which is not consistent with the uniform diameter of the other 3 tires. This will cause damage to the AWD system. It will not show up right away; however after 10k-15k miles or more repairs to the system start showing up that cost more than what 3 additional tires would have cost.
Sorry to disagree but my ‘11 Forester experienced a ruined winter tire while vacationing in South Carolina. Tires were at least half worn ( warn?) . Took a week to get a new one (Hankook). Had no problem. Ran the same 4 tires the next winter . Traded the car at 220,000 km. Was using oil but drive train was fine.
This is true. When I first got my Subaru Outback I ran over a screw and i had to get that tire replaced because it damaged the sidewall driving short distance to change tire away from curve in the road. Luckily the shop I went to checked the new tire circumference with a string and it was close enough to the diameter of the rest of the 3 tires. The only drawback of the all wheel drive system is having to buy all 4 tires if tread is half worn and you blow a tire. Although there are sites online that say they will wear the one tire down to the circumference of the other 3. Probably costs you the same as buying a set of 4 tires.

Change the oil Every 5K miles and have your tires rotated at 5K miles as well.
Subaru says to never change the CVT fluid. Our Subaru mechanic (he works on Subaru exclusively), says to replace the CVT fluid every 36K miles . Our Subaru mechanic does NOT change the fluid on the CVTs because the transmission anď the fluid have to be at a certain temperature.
My wife’s Outback just had its 30K mile service completed, so this summer I’ll schedule an appointment with Subaru of Spokane for them to do the CVT fluid change.
Have your mechanic or dealer change the rear differential and transfer case fluid done at 30K miles, as well as bleed the brakes.
Subaru’s are temperamental so make sure you keep up with the maintenance.
They’re not as good as a Toyota for longevity but they’re Superior in traction, safety and accident avoidance.
At around 140K miles or so, your Subie engine will start leaking oil because Subaru is too cheap to install real gaskets in their engines, so the silicon “gaskets” break down and start leaking oil.
Your mechanic will have to tear down your entire engine, scrape off all of the silicone “gaskets” and replace them with Real gaskets. Once this is done, your engine will easily last another 150K - 200K miles.
If Subaru would start putting REAL gaskets into their engines from factory, they would last as long as a Toyota
All my vehicles have oil/filter changes every 3k...If I'm lucky I might put that many miles on a vehicle in a year LOL. I don't drive that far anymore....so I still do the old school 3k intervals...oil/filters are a heck of a lot cheaper than major mechanical failures/repairs. As for the CVT service, yep, definitely get that done never listen to dealers that say a fluid change isn't needed, course they say that they want you buying another car in a couple years when you blow your old one up by not doing the proper maintenance....wonder what the service manual says for a Subaru's CVT service...I bet it don't say the fluid is good for the life of the vehicle....well I guess if you total it in a year or less then that would be the case, but 36k, would be 1-2 years of driving for many drivers.
I know my 08 Toyota Tundra's transmission service was similar to the Subaru...fluid had to be a certain temp before changing it or adding fluid, etc. That scenario has been around for a while now. I think the worst was my 08 Explorer...the check plug on the transmission was 2 inches away from the catalytic converter...so wearing high temp gloves was an absolute must to check the fluid level.
Subaru isn't the only one that has oil leaks LOL...every Ford I've owned has leaked oil from somewhere...usually multiple places, but the odd thing has always been they're never low on oil or any other fluid though...so its like you are leaking but how and what for LOL.
Not sure why your mechanic can't do the cvt fluid change. Its super simple. Yes it has to be brought to operating temp before you can make sure the fluid level is correct. You simply fill it up with the amount drained, then you run the car for a bit. Then you check fluid level.

@@wildbill23c we have a 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4WD with the 4.0L V6 and 5spd automatic transmission with 3.55 gears in the rear differential with limited slip.
It has only 36K miles and is mainly used for work around our property.
I change the oil and filter every 6 months (which is about 1K -1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic oil.
When it hit 30K miles I had the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid changed. Every 3 years I back flush the radiator and add new antifreeze.
Yeah, when I used conventional oil, it was changed every 2500-3K miles, but now that I switched to full synthetic, I always buy “High Mileage” oil because it has additives that reduces wear. It says to change the oil every 10K miles, but on our cars, it’s every 5K miles as well as the tires are rotated during the oil change.
I’m a maintenance freak too. I suppose that’s why we get so many miles from our vehicles.
I’ve mentioned this before. Subaru Canada says to change the CVT and differential fluid every 100,000km . Subaru Japan even more often. I’ve changed mine twice in less than 200,000km.

Hi Alex! Thank you for these great videos. Fortunately, my wife and I do everything in this video correctly. If you remember, we've had a Forester Premium since Jan. 22nd 2022. On Jan. 6th (about 2 1/2 weeks ago, we traded it in for the 2024 Forester Wilderness. Love it, by the way. One thing people need to know is on any Subaru that has a full-size spare. At the 6000-mile service, the spare is rotated in to keep even wear on the tires. So, you are rotating 5 tires instead of 4. The last thing, if your Subaru has to be towed, it has to go up on a 4 wheel flatbed tow truck.
My 2024 forester wilderness has a tow hook in the front. I didn't really check so i'm not sure if it is on only one side or not but I found that very interesting. I also love my wilderness forester. And I also do everything in the video correctly (except maybe washing it, but I live in Florida so, we don't get snow. Love bugs might be an issue though), but I have had luxury cars (Audis & BMWs) with a lot of the safety systems that Suburu has so I learned a while ago not to "cheat" the systems. You don't want to mess up what might save your life.

@@Racer88I believe the Wilderness fullsize spare has a fullsize rim, meaning a 5 wheel rotation schedule, while the Onyx has a fullsize spare on a smaller rim, so it's still just for temporary emergency use only.
We bought WeatherTech floor liners for both our Outback and Forester.
The sides are about 2” high.
We purposefully bought my wife’s Outback with Warm Ivory interior, so the floor liners are dark Tan. Also my Forester has Saddle Brown Leather interior so the floor liners are Brown.
Anything beats gloomy gray or Boring Black from the last millennium.
We had the factory Subaru rubber mats for our Crosstrek Sport. They are awful. Too small and where they punched holes to fasten the yellow Sport logo, they leaked salty water onto the carpet. We now have WeatherTech mats. Super good product!

Pay attention when your trying and you don’t need all the safety systems
I saw a video on how to disable that, so I asked the Subaru video poster how you can re-enable the seatbelt alarm after that. He said disconnecting the battery for 15 to 20 minutes will do it.
2015 Subaru Outback Limited 74k miles bought it brand new in 2015 changed the tranny differential oil for the cvt as per manual. Only changed oil and used the Subaru filters with the O ring . Unfortunately over the years you hear of engine problems with Forester and to a lesser extent Outback . Head Gaskets and oil burning are common in select engines . I think the body and frame help to keep the car with minimal issues since it likes rough terrain . IN Va we havent had snow since 2016 when I first bought the Outback had fun in snow with the Xdrive. Make sure you purchase from a rep with knowledge of the vehicle since many dealerships hire different levels of expertise and you dont want to get with a rep who cant even answer the basic questions ...this is not a hyundai.
Great video, thank you. I'm not quite sure if you mean to say it's important to service your vehicle (obviously yes), or whether it's important to reset your service interval reminder. I service my 2 Subarus so often and don't do the service interval reminder much, as I keep detailed records on a spreadsheet.
I hate the ASS. I would rather keep the oil running through the engine; maybe if they had an electric oil pump to continue circulating the oil when the engine is shut off, they would be on to something great. We all should know that wear and tear occurs most during engine start. In your example of 6000 miles with some assumptions (25mpg, $2.80 average price per gallon): your average mpg went from 25mpg to 25.75mpg. Instead of using approximately 240 gallons, you used 233 gallons, with a savings of $19.60. That is less than 1/3 of a cent per mile. Obviously a generic calculation based on reasonable expectations from 14,000 miles driving my 2024 Outback Onyx XT, but I also do 90% interstate with cruise control engaged. A car that gets higher MPG has even less savings. And if you doubled the cost of the gas, you would get double the savings. In the example, that would be 2/3 of a cent per mile.
Great video. I must say Auto Start-Stop sucks! I don’t mind what it does, it does save fuel, I can’t get by when it starts. It lurches forward slightly. Every time, at every stop, at every light and is rather annoying. I would rather it just stay off always. But great video nonetheless. 😃
Tuxmat is superior to any other car mats on the market. They ship out of Canada and only took a couple days to get to me. I’ve had them in a couple cars now and will never go back to WeatherTech or any other brand. Far superior, and after I wipe them after sits on them, they look as good as new as when I installed them. I was able to install them myself and I love how high up on the sides they go, so no dirt gets down the edges like WeatherTech allows all the dirt from the gas pedal to go down the back whereas tux mat does not permit this. And they look stunning.
Alex, I would like you to address a problem with OB starting in model year 2020.
I have a 2024 Subaru outback and we’ve noticed it people without a key can walk up to the passenger side as I approach the driver side (with the key in my pocket) and without me, touching the doorhandle, the passenger will touch their door handle and all doors will unlock. Remember I’m not touching door handle and yet all the doors will open when the passenger touches the doorhandle on their side.
I recently spent four hours with the district manager of Subaru, and we found out that this happens all the time. If somebody approaches the door and tries it without the key fob near the driver door or passenger door, it activates the car’s “bubble” and then if the driver walks up only the driver’s door will open.
Hmm .. are you talking about a setting? ... you're able to allow/disallow opening passenger door will open all doors..
turning off is supposed to be good to the environment. how about trashing your battery and starter motor? is it good?

Can't agree with you more. Subaru needs to seriously reevaluate what they are doing here. Starting your engine is one of the most destructive things you do to it on a daily basis. As soon as you shut the engine off, the oil pump shut off and there is no longer positive lubricating pressure and fluid being forced to critical bearings...especially the turbo and the crankshaft. So stopping and restarting your engine repeatedly is just nonsense, more demand and ware on almost every part of the engine. All this to save a measly 7 gallons. The cost benefit isn't there.

From 🇨🇦 here. The all-weather mats are amazing. But fir winter I find the cloth mats are better. They soak up the moisture instead of letting it slosh around. If it is too cold most times we stop dumping the water ofc of the rubber mats. Then when you run the bi-level heat the cloth msts dry out and the interior stays frost-free.

Alex, I’ve been watching your videos for about 6 months. We recently bought a 2023 Ascent and your channel is a good resource for me to learn all the features. The question I have goes to tire chains. A call to my local Subaru service department yielded a definite “no”. The local tire shop here answered “maybe”. I can’t find anything in my owners manual about the use of tire chains. I wonder what you know about tire chains and Subaru. When I refer to tire chains I include cable and other traction devices. Thanks in advance for any info.
I've personally hated Auto Start Stop as in the end its extra wear on other components such as the starter or extra fuel upon startup.
I haven't had any other issues using the auto start stop eliminator kit in my 2020 Outback and I've had the car since August of last year, had the eliminator kit since about October of last year.
Fuel injection doesn’t use that extra fuel when you start it. Hyper-milers have been shutting the car off for years without Auto-stop-start. It’s perfectly fine.

the seatbelt hack works good for silencing the alarm. the cruise control doesn't work unless you have your seatbelt on though, thats the catch. should have it on anyway.
Just got my 2024 Limited. I find it very strange that after a few seconds the seat belt alarm goes to the entertainment speakers?
Dealerships often try to scam customers. The, “Oh you need to do this or that at half the interval Subaru recommends” or my all time favourite, “your cabin air filter needs replaced, it’s a bargain at $100!” EXCEPT I just replaced it myself for $10 & then I advise them that fraud isn’t the best way to keep a customer coming back. Once your Subaru, or any other vehicle, is out of warranty find a reliable local mechanic & you will be well taken care of for years to come (& NEVER pay anyone to change either air filter, both can be changed by an 80 year old without issue in
they are only recommendations if we see something dirty we gotta recommend it you don't have to buy it and there is usually a video or photo of your filter for proof.

Never had an issue at our dealership. We own two outbacks and have had all regularly scheduled maintenance done at the dealership.
After watching your videos you have me wanting a Subaru, but not sure which one. I like the space of the outback and forester, I also like the sedan Legacy, the crosstrek looks nice too.
Drive one for a bit. The car will get on your nerves with all the buzzers, steering shakes, engine shut offs.....feels like living with an overactive and annoying friend that reminds you of the same things 10,000 times.

The auto start/stop on my 2023 Forester takes a pretty firm press on the brake pedal to activate, much harder than the auto brake hold. I don't know if that is normal, but I''m not heavy on the brakes under normal circumstances, so I have to press pretty hard on the brake to get it to activate once I reach a full stop. A normal stop will not do it.

Yep. I kiteboard every few days at a wide sandy windy beach. Brand new Outback and it's full of sand 30 seconds after I open any door 😢

Auto stop: most wear on an engine is when it starts. So the trade off is engine wear for gas saving?
the wear is on the starter, not the engine, and modern starters are made to handle auto stop/start for the life of the car so there should be no problems when used properly!
@@elliealbrecht1161 The wear on the internal engine components happens when you start the engine because there is the oil is in the pan and it has to be pumped sideways in a boxer engine. So when you come to a stop, the engine cuts out and the oil pressure drops and the oil begins to drain to the pan and the internal components are no longer oiled. The transmission oil in the torque convert stops turning. And if the traffic lights are light ours you could be there for 3 minutes, and the light turns green and the oil has to begin to flow again and there is that confound shuttler of the CVT spinning up, all for 7 gallons of gas in 6000 miles.

I drive my 2020 Outback about 8k miles a year and the battery has been replaced twice because of the OEM being too small, the alternator being undersized, and the parasitic draw from the Starlink system. Was suggested from dealership that I turnoff auto start/stop to keep the alternator charging and drive more… not sure I buy it. It’s too bad because I love the car, but am getting sick of a newish car leaving me stranded.

I use Chemical Guys Total Interior for the infotainment and cluster area. Aerospace 303 Protectant for the dashboard. And Wabam Ignite to touch up the exterior paint (bird poop, minor mud etc). I have Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra ceramic coating and the detailer recommended Wabam. All these work great!

TIP: Scan to your computer the Maintenance Schedule out of the Owners Manual. Place it in a Word file and then keep notes on when and where each schedule service is performed as well as all extra stuff like tires and battery. Oh, and my tip, unless you KNOW your dealer is awesome...use an independent shop for all non-warranty work. Indie Shops thrive or die on reputation.

One of my main gripes is the area around the gas and brake pedal. Plus all of the carpet that is left exposed along the sides. I'll look into Tuxmat!
Hi Alex! I love your videos. I asked for your input a couple years back when my lease was coming up on my 2019 outback and I took your advice and bought out my lease because I love my car so much. Last week while we were in New Jersey little dots appeared on my LCD screen or of nowhere but I couldn't wipe them away. I did some research and found out this is a very common Subaru problem and it is the screen delaminating? I am so upset as I have been told it will cost $1,500 to replace. I am also on my second windshield that is completely split from one side to the other. I continue to drive around like this because I am too afraid to replace it as I know it will crack again because of the ongoing Subaru glass issue. Do you have any tips to help me move forward? Do i keep replacing the windshield? Will Subaru help me with the delaminating screen? My car isn't even 5 years old and it's garage kept and babied. I'm just frustrated and thought you may have sone advice. I'm starting to feel like I should have just gotten a new car instead of keeping a headache but deep down I really do love my car.

6k miles is a good indicator to change your oil. However 6 months is a bit early since subaru uses full synthetic. No need to change at 6 months, I do mine once a year since i'm under 6k miles per year.
that auto stop start is so damn annoying, and the restart is ROUGH!
When my restart started getting rough I took it in for service. The battery was going bad. Since it was still under warranty, the dealer replaced it. Now I'm worried that autostart will run the new battery. I want to use the feature but have been turning it off because it is hard on the battery.

Same I live in a cold region. And never am in any stop and go traffic where it would actually benefit.
Just push the brake down enough to keep your car from creeping forward and the start/stop won't activate.
The only time it activates is when folks try and push the brake pedal thru the floor.
Having a garage to park you car in at home makes a big difference. Even better if you have one at work, too. Other tips: change fluids/followaintanance schedule, try to avoid predpminantly short trips,(especially in cold weather), avoid eating/drinking in the car. I've only watched part of the video so far.
regarding the gas types; I used to have a 2018 crosstrek and after a couple of years using regular unleaded fuel it started getting very sluggish. someone at the dealership suggested to start using premium fuel and flooring it once in a while in the expressway and it got rid of the sluggishness and I never went back to regular.
even now that i own a 2022 outback wilderness, i immediately started using premium and not risking it getting sluggish.
Premium (higher octane) fuel has a higher resistance to knock or pre-ignition. Using it in an engine not designed for it is wasting money. Always use a Top-tier fuel (you can Google this) as they have higher levels of detergent additives which can increase fuel economy and optimize engine performance. If you do mostly low speed (city) driving, going out on the highway every so often is a good idea.
Your problem wasn't using regular unleaded fuel per se. It was that you were using crappy regular unleaded fuel. They aren't all the same...

Alex, although Start/Stop may save fuel, there are drawbacks. Increased wear on your starter and battery are the key negatives. Saving 7 gallons over 15 hours of the Stop function is not worth it. Subaru use the cheapest CCA battery it can (mine need replacement in the first 500 miles) and the constant restarting of the engine reduces the life of the starter according to many automotive experts.
Don’t forget to pick up some seat covers to protect against stains, pet hair, etc. A small investment but worth it IMO. Subaru sells branded seat covers too but these are overpriced.
Sheepskin seat covers work great, both in comfort and insulation. And replacing them after 125,000 miles is far cheaper than re upholstering the seats. I have only used the seat heaters a handful of times on my 2015 Outback when temperatures down to -20C at Whistler.
Read somewhere you shouldn't put seat covers on newer cars cuz it'll impede operation of side air bags? Or are you talking about back seat only?
2022 Forester user here. At the same time, in Europe the recommended maintenance schedule is 12 months/15.000 km (~ 9500 miles). Where the difference is coming from?
Hate the auto stop function on new cars. The wear and tear on the starter and your engine will be far more expensive than the cost of the gas saved. Ask any engine mechanic and they will tell you that starting the engine is when the engine gets the most wear because of the lack of oil.
The worst function on any car. Even though you can turn it off, you have to it every time. Manufacturers should realize by now…..have a choice of using it or permanently shutting it off

It will while only saving you a minuscule amount of gas. My guess is they default it to on every time so it wears your engine out faster causing you to spend more

Auto start stop saves tenths of a gallon over a tank full but puts far more wear and tear on the engine. The most wear an engine ever sees is at start up. Oil is not flowing at crank. Why on earth would want that to happen everytime you come to a stop. Pleaes turn it off and seve your engine wear and tear. The gas savings will be far less in value than premature wear on eventual repairs when your engine warranty is over.
plus, it wears out batteries which are super hard on the environment.
I bought a 2010 subaru Forester awd with the partial zero emissions. It runs great to have 182 k miles now but I'm curious about maintainance on the transmission and rear-end. The previous owner kept detailed records from brand new but there's nothing about those 2 items. Oh, and this suv will onlrun right with 93 octane or the slightly less ethanol free 90 octane. Anything else and the valves chatter.
My battery died in my 2022 Crosstrek after less than 2 years. The first time it would not start the weather was below zero here. I’m wondering if the start/stop function caused it to die so quickly??
It's probably not the ASS system. Subaru batteries are junk. Mine died twice 13 and 14 months into ownership. I replaced it with an AGM battery. Been fine since. 16 months. I was able to get Subaru to reimburse me. They are not cheap.

Many ppl will be prolonging 6k intervals bc subaru charges $100+ for oil changes/tire rotation. And close to $2000 for 60k interval schedule maintenance. To offset slow shop time they will try to upsell you services that are not necessary and is not needed at the moment. $30-50 to change cabin air filter etc. Also, pls tell subaru to get rid of this stupid stop/start decreasing emissions nonsense bs...pls. 🎉
A 6k service interval is just absurd. I would barely be outside the workshop if I would do that. I do an oil change every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. My car's service reminder starts complaining after about 12,000-13,000 miles.
Do people not know that owning a car, home, whatever, requires maintenance now and then? What’s $100! If you can’t afford that, don’t buy the car.
I can afford reasonable pricing formula not hyperinflation and high markups just to get profits and sell what's not needed to those who is less educated or mechanically inclined. Pls note im not saying that 6k intervals are bad thing however. (So I end up doing these services myself)
Also saying don't buy a car in Kansas City is a pretty ignorant way of showing your superiority over those less fortunate or maybe in a difficult financial situation.

Alex I am enjoying catching up with your videos on the Subaru. We live in Ontario Canada. The models and trim packages in 24s and 25s seem to vary. We are in the process of making a purchase of an Outlander or a Forrester.
I had hoped that you would identify the year and model/trim for the cars you show. But unless I just missed the info…I didn’t catch it. The general themes are great but knowing what car you are talking about would help us make a decision on which features are important to us.

Why are service intervals so short on cars in the USA? Do you run old-school mineral oils or something? Amazes me how often you seem to change oil over there! (this is not a dig, just an observation!). In the UK 12 months is the specified service interval, typically.
The best response to that is, Why is yours so long? Oil is cheap, engines are not.
Shrug. Why waste oil when you don't need to? Subaru in the UK have a 12 months/9000 miles interval for the XV (model picked at random).
@@MultiVogonI never gauge an oil change by dates. Mileage only, as living in the U.S. is spread out over greater distances. I usually put 35,000 miles a year on my vehicles. The western portion of the United States excluding California, Oregon Washington state (huge states) have 4,900,000 km². If you add the state of the Alaska it is 6,620,000 km². So those in the UK or Europe have zero understanding of why our maintenance is different.

@@MultiVogontrue but the viscosity will change because of prolonged heat. Which means your motor is running longer at a higher RPM. It breaks down the oil.
Hey Alex need to check your tire pressure...front left wheel looks a little under inflated. In Canada we always need to check our tire pressure with the temp going up and down
I bought a 2024 Subaru Legacy Premium and did the very first oil change just after 1000 miles i was told that was recommended for break in oil change.....then go according to 6 months/6000 miles ....
Been using the auto start-stop eliminator for over 3 years now without issues. It's just a memory device so I highly doubt this will harm anything.

There's nothing wrong or harmful about using the auto start-stop eliminator. The presenter works for a Subaru dealership and is creating content under the auspices of his employer, so he's of course going to not approve of anything that is aftermarket even if it does not pose a realistic risk.

I'm guilty of the seatbelt alarm disabling trick but all it took to fix my stupid and get my adaptive cruise control to work again......disconnect the battery for 5 mins and everything went back to normal
Has Subaru done anything to reduce chassis corrosion? My 2016 Legacy chassis became crusty after 8 years. Thinking to wash including under carriage wash in car wash once a month or so during the salt months to try and reduce this.
The auto stop is fine with very long stoplights. I so often try to start quickly when I have a traffic break. The Auto Off actually puts me in GREATER danger of an accident. Please find a way to set it off with occasional reminders to turn it back on. The amount of gas saved never reaches as much as 5 gallons of savings after months of use.

Seatbelt extensions will silence the alarm without "tricking" the system. Yes the alarm is annoying. It is especially annoying when you drive Uber and the alarm for the backseat is sounding all day.long. Some people are too big for the backseat seatbelts. Get seatbelt extensions if the alarm bothers you. They're safe and legal.

The Eliminator works perfectly. All it does is override the memory of the A-S-S system. And that system is a great way to destroy your engine long term, as well as the battery, by constantly dropping the oil pressure to zero by doing thousands of unnecessary hot (or worse yet, cold) starts.
Mandatory Auto Start/Stop is the one thing I absolutely hate about my car. This is the problem when boardroom virtue signaling activists get involved with engineering. It seems to go off at the worst times and I definitely don't want it turning off when it's -20°.

If they didn't have a button, then yes, otherwise the button just works.
100% I have had an auto stop eliminator on my Crosstrek for almost a year.
Its gotten to be 2nd nature for me... Press start button. Press "A' Button.
Don't try to push the brake pedal thru the floor when you stop and the start/stop won't engage.
Just push it enough to hold the vehicle still.
I have had my 2022 Forster for a little over one year. Last night I went out to my garage and heard a humming noise coming from underneath my vehicle. I had no idea what could have occurred, came inside looked it up on YT to find that this is normal(?). Alex, have you addressed this on a video and perhaps I missed it? Love my Forester and enjoy your videos.
That's normal, Subaru has added more padding in 2025 model so you don't hear it. It's just regular cvt sound.
Don't know how you drive but my Auto Start /So had only saved 1.75 gallons over 6000 miles. As far as I'm concerned it's a pain in the butt feature
Same here. 2000 miles saved 1.5 gallons. I try to remember to turn it off each trip.
Thete are devices sold that remember that you turned it off last time and autumn's several the signal to turn it off each time you start your car it's as if you hit the button every time you start the car.
