- In this video I have counted my way across the map of Just Cause 3 to see how many people call the nation of Medici home. Next to this I was also interested in seeing whether the huge population of soldier that staff the military bases across the map is realistic for a nation that size. So if you're also interested in the answers to this those questions, please join me in me journey across the map of one of my favorite game of all time, Just Cause 3.

The population size for small towns seems too small, I thing using median house occupancy instead of average would yield better results

Cuz he is counting a building where realistically there are maybe 10 flats with 20 people as 3 flats with 6 people lmao.

I agree. I used to live in an old Mediterranean apartment building, and there were at least 8-9 apartments in the building
Use the mean or the mode not the median.
You grossly underestimated the number of flats in those old apartment buildings.
The one you used as an example, would probably 8-10 separate units. And if the nation is poor, entire extended families would live in just one unit.
Your averages are too low, those apartments should have like 50-100 people each judging by the size. The old style houses should have more than 6 people too, I'd guess closer to 10-12 people your count is way off.

One thing to note, in the mission 'Missile Cowboy', Dimah says "Rico, missile is aimed at Baia province - if it hits, it will kill thousands!"
Judging by this quote, the population count in this video should be at least two times greater, Manaea's population is certainly far higher than 681.

Which is really weird because in the game the missile goes in the complete opposite direction; north to the sea south of the big island.
GTA 5 says Los Santon pop is 4 million, but realistically, it's 20 thousand
The yield of the missile isn't that high so it wouldn't do too much damage so Sheldon is probably right because of that. I think his count is way off with the amount of people living there
well, do note that game devs have a budget and they probably didn't bother making any real estimate. so it depends on the perspective, really. whether you want a game dev answer or a more realistic answer.
JC3 surely has a small population for such a massive game, that big island is nearly as large as Elba, the island Napoleon went to exile.

Lore accurate, citate di ravello inhabits 20000-40000 people, they gotta be living in those two big towers and even then, they gotta be about the size of those japanese apartments, but you can't ignore the facts, if it looks like 4k+, then it probably is

Well he did also heavily underestimate how many people can live in buildings in this video. For example old town apartment buildings like those in-game usually house a lot more than 6 people. Not to mention that due to the state medici is in I'm sure there's a higher than average number of people stuffed in households. He shouldn't have based his numbers entirely on a broad stat for italy

Snall hint, the army is actually mostly made up of Black hand mercs as seen in a cutscene when di ravello talks to an officer, he uses the medici regime unifomr but is adressed as a merc and not an officer or general
Should also take into account family sizes based on the wealth of the towns. In the wealthiest towns:cities most household families may number around 4-5. And a single home in the poorer towns may have double the people living in it then the wealthy towns especially given their nation is a collection of small islands with limited space.
So the size of the army wouldn’t be unrealistic especially given a lot of poorer citizens would join the military for the money.

I already thought there was 10 million people that live in the capital and the tiniest city had a population of 200
I used your counting methods for Vico Marquello and got 92 (probably wrong) but that seems more reasonable than the estimates he is using.
If you want to continue counting population and stuff, I have a list of possible games: The other GTA games, the Saints Row games (thinking of 2, 3), the Elder Scrolls Games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim), the Fallout Games (at least 3, new vegas, 4 (dont forget the dlcs)), population of Red Dead Redemption, the Far Cry games, the Watch Dogs games, the Hitman games, Kingdom Come Deliverance or the Batman games. Your pick :)
But I'd also appreciate some more fun facts or experiments in Projekt Zomboid :)

It's kinda pain in the ass,as there are many small towns and villages,populated bridges witch are located under the bridge,cities are large,similar size as Saint Denise,but less cramped. Also I love your content

this map would be so hard to count if you include the soldier and those random houses in the middle of nowhere
alright. i just painstakingly counted the population of ONE TOWN. and by counted, i mean actually counted. i still had to assume an average per household, for which i picked 4 as it seems to be more realistic for a poor nation like medici, that recently had its real estate reduced massively. but with that number in hand i went ahead and assesed EVERY SINGLE RESIDENTIAL BUILDING in the town of "Perla Est". i basically looked at the building and tried to estimate how many flats it contained, based on the number of floors, windows and balconies along with taking the general size and shape of the building into account. for every flat, i added an extra household of 4, which then gave me the total occupancy of each building. i then added all those together, plus some extra people, like the mayor and his staff or the local priest. this particular town didnt have homeless people, but some do, so that would have to be taken into account in those. This method gave me a total town population of 1,554 Civilians. But i wasnt Finished. I then counted every farmhouse, monastery and rural residency in the province aswell. this added up to a rural populace of 160 people (i assumed 20 monks/nuns per monastery). so the total civilian population of the province of "Costa Sud" ended up being 1,714 people. I then very quickly and very roughly used that ratio of rural to urban population to estimate the total civilian population of medici. this came out to circa 66,000. and assuming a highly militarised society like north korea (which has about 6 percent of the population in the military), would give a total population of around 70,000 people.
I also had the idea to count how many people live in the Medici, but after an hour I got tired of doing it. Here's what I was able to do:
Rondella (city) - 194 (civilians), 2 prisoners, 3 DRM.
Lantuina (city) - 15 DRM, 2 prisoners, 1 van driver.
Guardia-Lavanda I (military base) 5 DRM (at the entrance), 9 DRM inside.
To count civilians in Rondella, I used this way: 2 windows - 1 person.
DRM I counted how much I see.

Why would you count entire floors in poor cities as belonging to one family as if it were a luxurious penthous? In reality each apartment should have 1, 2 or at most 3 windows, not the entire floor, there's many 20 to 40m2 apartments in real life, where would you fit all those windows in such a small place?
You still got the northern island of mercenaries, the platforms and the hellicarier.

You gotta remember, not only was Di Revello trying to stop the rebellion, he was also probably trying to stop other nations from stealing his Bavarium, therefore “justifying” the large military force

Well according to my in game data I’ve killed 1.7 million people including Rebels, civilians, and military personnel. This also includes robots from the DLCs so results varies.

I feel like your final count is way too low, for example, in the building you use as an example in 2:35, you measure about 3 homes with 2 people each, in reality, being from Greece, I'd say that it's far more likely that each floor in that white building is an apartment/house, coming out at about like 10-15 people in there, not 6-7. Also, I think your tally of 11500 people is way too low, because Kos, a Greek Mediterranean island smaller than Medici (195 sq/km, while Medici's land area is 272 sq/km) has a population of about 30000 people, and it also has a somewhat similar ratio of wilderness and settlements. So Medici probably has a population actually closer to like 20000-25000 people.
Also on the disproportionally large amount of military personnel, that's not that weird, besides a lot of them being foreign Black Hand mercenaries like you mentioned, it's also a North Korea style junta.

Shouldnt you count the avarage amount of people per household in Malta and not Italy? As Medici is located right where Malta is.
