No matter what has ever gone on in my life ,good /bad indiffernt all i have to do is listen to this Ladies voice and instantly im taken to a differnt place ..stunning
Among female singer-songwriters anywhere remotely within the folk tradition, Beth Orton is my 2nd-favorite, next to Suzanne Vega, who is my #1 favorite musical artist of all. "Magpie" is one of my 2 favorite songs of Orton's, along with "Shadow of a Doubt". Magpie has a lot of deeply-seeded, powerful emotions in it - anger, firstly, as well as a sort of over-arching wisdom, and a longing for justice, and a good bit of introspection, too. It is a very haunting song, as well as being symphonic in its overall musical body. This is truly a tremendous song and, in a somewhat different, somewhat better world, this would have gotten a ton of airplay. The rest of the songs on the "Sugar Seasoning" album are simply outdone by this first song, but then again, how do you follow a song like this one up?
Beth Orton is a refreshing combination of Suzanne Vega, Lorena McKennett, and Enya, yet she is unique on her own. Such timeless music. Music like this will still be here when just about all other music has gone the way of the dodo bird.
My good friend just turned me on to this artist. I said to him that she almost instantly reminded me of the late Sandy Denny..he said that she list her as one of her influences!..Just listening to the beginning of this song, I became instantly hooked on her incredile voice..
Awesome & great song. The feel & imagery is perfectly matched. So happy to have a new CD from Beth Orton! I'm buying it tomorrow, along with Gemma Hayes, "Let It Break", & the new Garbage, "Not Your Kind Of People". Watch here, but support your bands/artists!!! (ThePoeslik: you are a troll, obviously. Only trolls take the time to trash without offering a critique. And yes, an up vote does not require this- only a down vote to support a negative review).
.. tell me lies, tell me ... lies... Yeah, I discovered Beth Orton today by listening to Dish Network TVs CD channel "Songbook". This song was gently jarring with almost an anthemic warning, accusation, rebuke and reclamation of bird song freedom to stand up and set yourself free. ending chant warding off evil lies with undeniable truth, like the heart beat of truth spoken from the soul to the heart and head, drumming it home... relationship dirge....
Magpie, magpie, I stand here watching the world go by I wonder do you ever question why? ... I'm still here wondering what you knowing I've seen more everyday than I could dream I don't mind no what I tell you I don't mind no what I say I don't mind no what we're saying But it's a hard hard fight A hard, hard fight And I'm turning this one in, I'm turning this one in I won't turn back, I've seen the sign I won't turn back not for anyone I've seen the sign, and I know what is mine Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like You didn't take I don't think you mean quite what you say I'm hoping you're the friend you claim to be Oh crow, crow, will you tell me ṗlease, Tell me please what you know You've seen more of the book than I could dream I do not know what to tell you I do not know what to say I do not know what we're saying friend But it's a hard hard fight A hard, hard fight And I'm turning this one in, I'm turning this one in I won't turn back, I've seen the sign I won't turn back not for anyone I've seen the sign, and I know I have faith Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like Eh, eh yeah Silence when I won't be here anymore Silence when I won't be here anymore Silence when I won't be here anymore Silence when I won't be here anymore What a lie, what a lie, what a lie What a lie, what a lie, what a lie What a lie, what a lie, what a lie What a lie, what a lie, what a lie What a lie, what a lie, what a lie

Anyone
Magpie, magpie, I stand here watching the world go by
I wonder do you ever question why?
... I'm still here wondering what you knowing
I've seen more everyday than I could dream
I don't mind no what I tell you
I don't mind no what I say
I don't mind no what we're saying
But it's a hard hard fight
A hard, hard fight
And I'm turning this one in,
I'm turning this one in
I won't turn back, I've seen the sign
I won't turn back not for anyone
I've seen the sign, and I know what is mine
Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like
Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like
You didn't take I don't think you mean quite what you say
I'm hoping you're the friend you claim to be
Oh crow, crow, will you tell me ṗlease,
Tell me please what you know
You've seen more of the book than I could dream
I do not know what to tell you
I do not know what to say
I do not know what we're saying friend
But it's a hard hard fight
A hard, hard fight
And I'm turning this one in,
I'm turning this one in
I won't turn back, I've seen the sign
I won't turn back not for anyone
I've seen the sign, and I know I have faith
Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like
Eh what a lie, what a lie, what a lie, what a lie looks like
Eh, eh yeah
Silence when I won't be here anymore
Silence when I won't be here anymore
Silence when I won't be here anymore
Silence when I won't be here anymore
What a lie, what a lie, what a lie
What a lie, what a lie, what a lie
What a lie, what a lie, what a lie
What a lie, what a lie, what a lie
What a lie, what a lie, what a lie

The music is alright but her voice gets annoying after a few minutes.
