Training my oldest son on the Cowen 60 frame extractor. It’s a simple machine to work but all the steps need to be swift so that the extractor spends more time spinning than loading.
It typically takes 8 min for the conveyor to load, which is just enough time to spin the honey out of the comb. A 1 minute load/unload makes for more drier combs when pulled from the extractor,

I loved learning how to use the extractor with your son as my teacher, and you as the “voice of experience” in the background. It’s fun to learn how machines operate. I knew the general motions from watching your videos, but now I understand the levers, crank, brake, etc...I’m ready to head for Canada and become part of your crew! 😊 🐝🐝🐝

Did pull on 2 yards yesterday and best hive gave two boxes and I will get a 3rd before building for wintering nest building . I don’t get many hives that yield about 150 pounds . Best honey pull off that yard ever but bee foraging crop on blooms has paid off on cpr land and looking to do the same with waisted in used land at other yard . This years experiment shows plant crop for bees and rewards are in the honey.

That's cheating! We had an automatic hot knife extractor and two 96 frame radials on my Dad's operation, but everything in between was moving frames by hand. That's a really sweet setup! Your crew is "lucky", ha ha! I can sympathize with your son. He's lucky to be getting the education you are giving him. Very few in this world will get the experiences you are giving him.
Goodday Ian, could you show the processes in cleaning the extracting equipment after harvest and how you salvage all that honey in the pipe system used, sumps, pipes, I could imagine hundreds of dollars in honey sitting in the system.
I do not miss the honey house from my brief time doing it......so rote......but your operation is a little better oriented (which leads to less physical) and you also carry a lot more help. Good honey crop.
Honey house is a good change up from the yard, and the yard is a good change up from the honey house lol

6:52 Saw an overhead rail for boxes in a video a while back that gravity feed from the deboxer past the extractor. Can't find the clip now. Would save a lot of steps and eliminate the need for a walking path in that area.

I may be copying that window idea. The bees in my honey house are always a problem.
I put up bug zappers overnight after pulling honey. Hate to kill the stragglers but there's usually not too many, just enough to be a nuisance. I'm putting up a new honey house, it's going to have windows lol
Bug zappers certainly helps with wasps
Brad, I’ve come to the conclusion that a simple window, that I sweep regularly is the easiest and most effective method of clearing bees. I’ve tried elaborate escapes, tunnels, lures, hives etc... nothing works like a backwards window and a brush lol

Have you ever thought of running an afternoon shift to try and keep up with the demand for empty boxes? I hear how you always discuss the need for enough empty boxes to capture the flow on the tight schedule.
I think he said getting another crew trained to be able to run the equipment, and finding that many more people, is not a simple thing out there

So many dynamics are involved with managing a business, workload, getting the job done, keeping ahead of the work, the cost of help, the cost of getting behind, the cost of equipment and facility. I think we are nicely balanced. Busy enough to be busy and not behind

How much weight on a full truck?
You may have already thought of this. I was just thinking back to the fire you had the other day, and the application of the hydraulic power pack. I know with high torque DC winch motors over-frequent starting and stopping of the motor can cause increased heat issues in a hurry. I wonder if the nature of how the power pack is being used (short bursts) overheated the motor to the point that the brush springs relaxed, failed to make sufficient contact, and arced, creating more heat and eventually a fire. I’m not sure what the end solution is, but if a brushless motor is an option it might be worth the investment.

Stacked in the hot room for storage until we take them out again or put them into trailers for storage

Let’s say a box averages 60-65 lbs, 36 boxes to a pallet. 35-40 lbs per box ave is pretty good.
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog ok good.. I low-balled boxes at 60 ea and counted 36... so I was close there.. could be close to 5k pounds on the forklift. Man that is a LOT of honey to a small guy like me! lol

At 10:35 there are some Boxes taped together with red tape. Why did you do that?
Probably one of them is damaged leaving a spot the bees or pests can get through, which would cause problems when extracting.

Ten or nine i guess In suppers nine because they give more space for honey but in the first box where is the queen and the brood are ten
If I remember correctly, he uses 9 frames. This is so that the comb is a bit thicker and the decapping machine can be more efficient.
