That is something we only get to hear once every ten years or so, here in Central Cali. It makes me miss those northern spring storms...but still don't miss the 6 months of winter! Had to shake out my first colony today. Don't know if I will ever be able to get used to that... Thank you for your instruction. It gave me the confidence to make the decision and move forward. 🙏😶
Ian, how many gallons of syrup do you give them in a spring? In Seattle, Washington we never have pollen issues, it's available even before the bees comes out. Filberts (February), then alders/dandilions (March), maples, fruit trees, etc (April), but my girls take all the UltraBee I feed them, never from feeders, in a patty. But nectar flow only starts in April from Big Leaf Maples. I am a month ahead of your, and I think I am 2-2.5 gallons in each colony. Also, is extra head space inentional to collect burr comb, or unintentional consequence of need to feed patty?
It's also fun to watch them come in. Like dive bombers dropping into sight, slow down and in the box they go. Funny when they land on their back, reminds me of a turtle on it's back.

Hi Ian, we have had pollen coming in for a week or so now. I live in NB. You are still adding patties, if the bees dont use them do you save them or discard. I did not know the bees are getting nectar from the trees. Thanks for letting us know that. I see bees coming in and marching straight in without pollen. So they are getting nectar with that pollen. Here in New Brunswick we say " Paul - in " but we understand " pole - in ".
Hi just tip tray when smoking the bees work up wind ,tray a hook on the smoker , hooking on the side of hive keeping the bees down , less time handling smoker ! May I say ,great to watching you in your lovely country, Chris from ENGLAND ps this year I hope to restart my own beekeeping,rather many years --------- !

Were you going to sell some nucs to raise some bee money after the farm cut your budget or do you usually sell nucs annually as another income stream? I've not heard you mention selling bees before.
I love seeing your enthusiasm for your bees. Also your casual relaxed attitude when working your yards. ( Maybe it's a Canadian thing) And it's funny how the economy of movement is different is between a backyard enthusiast and a commercial beekeeper. I'm always trying to be careful not to squash bees when replacing lids/boxes etc, but I can guess the reason why. Well done mate. ( From Australia)

Maple pollen was my first pollen in MN and it was a tan-ish grey in color. Next was pussy willow last week (yellow) and now they are bring back some grey pollen (not sure where it's coming from - elm?). The wonderful smells and sounds of spring after watching snowflakes for 5 months. Great smile Ian.

@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog I know what you're using I'm going to start working with it I use crimped wire Foundation I have a lot of trouble down here in the south getting in the bees to pull the plastic Foundation even using triple Max wax Foundation from Mann Lake and I wish I could get my nuts to look like yours I don't know what you do I do basically the same thing and I have been jacking with bees since I was early twenties and I'm 56 now LOL have a good day my friend

I always thought it was amazing that the bees leave the easy to get pollen and syrup you have out and they go off to get the natural stuff

Do you ever harvest the propolis separate to the wax scrapings? It's a growing market. (scrapings off the sides of the nuc box and lid)

What are you scraping off the box covers as you place the mite strips and packets in the hives?
I’ve never really gotten the importance of inner covers but: Why do the nucs not have covers when the ten frame boxes do?

Bees were pretty calm with ol'thor knocking so close.
Pollen colors similar here: the white (I think Dogwood) yellow (bright) and orange (near fluorescent). Thanks Ian!
