Zero like a boss ha. It would be exciting to watch this in real life. Hearing the whine of the machine, the scrape and skwich of the hive tool, lifting the frame for the reveal and nest inspection, each box a present to open, then the excluder drop and return of the harvest to the hive. A fascinating process of man and nature together. Love it.
It is wonderful to se a well working way to work with bees, ian, you are making the sience of beeing an apiarist in to a, kind of an entertainment. Pls keep up the good work...
Good to see that you got the box. Hope they work as good for you as they have for me and others in my area who have tried them. They do have an "unusual" smell don't they. 👍😁
I'm in central illinois. The bees are slowing down and compacting their brood nests already. At the same time they're orienting like it's spring due to all the brood hatching out. My queens are slowing down because there's less daylight and less resources coming into the hive. They're not dumb. Mites are starting to show their ugly heads. It's that time. I'm pulling all my honey too. Every beek should know that the first day of summer is the longest day of the year. After that it's downhill. For me it's around 2 minutes per day less daylight. You don't notice it but them queens do.
I am a new beekeeper....so much to learn!!! I live in Michigan and still have golden rod to come-it is just starting plus hopefully a few sun flowers....would I wait until the golden rod flow ends to then put them into just one box? Do you make your own patty? How long will you leave that patty on? I have learned a lot from your videos. There is a lot more to beekeeping then meets the eye.
Ian, watch for random superseding after those algae patties. The bees will eat them but they also change the pheromone imprint in the colony for a while..
Anecdotal comment from Tennessee commercial keeper on algae patties is that brood doesn’t develop as quick as using standard pollen sub. I would like to hear your comments down line.
i run my boxes over my belt sander at a 45 degree angle to make them seal up better. This wont work if they are warped but for normal wear and tear it is a quick and easy fix.
Ahhh yes spicy dill patties! What's next? chips and a sandwich? lol Too bad there is no easy way to test those against yours. It blows my mind you are building fall nests already. It seems so early... makes me nervous for my bees. I know we a re a little behind you seasonally though. Thanks Ian!

Your bees are not just "organized and well-defined" in how they build their nest. I am thinking we need to look for a new type of bee. An officer of the queen's court you might say: a General. And no, it doesn't have to be a drone - but that would be interesting. These girls are as organized and capable as the Amazons, so it could be worker bee that got a promotion. Look for a star on her wing, if you see five stars, well - that would surprise me. But i am ready for it, get a picture!
While pulling boxes off how do you notice the colonies where the queen has squeezed through the excluder? Will the bees refuse to go down through the escape and stay in the box above the escape?
So you run all the bees out of the supers and overwinter with a single brood chamber? Do you ever have issues with swarming after you get them all down in the brood chamber?
As you put the excluder right on top of the broodbox, driving all the bees from the supers down, are you giving the bees still enough space ? I did the same back in June and immediately the hives were going in swarm mode.
Ian during your initial inspection if you find a hive that the queen has died at this time of year and the girls have made emergency cells cull them out or is there time left for a new queen to recoup before winter?
I ordered up Healthy Bee patties as a trial about a month ago. I ran some tests in the yard, putting one half Healthy Bee patty and one half UltraBee patty into the hives. The girls have, so far, gone for the Healthy Bee patties first, hard and fast, and then the UltraBee. I did a further test on about half the hives when the girls had eaten the Healthy Bee patty and switched to the UltraBee by putting another Healthy Bee patty in. A subsequent check showed the girls abandoned the UltraBee patty and went back to the Healthy Bee patty. This is, of course, not a rigorous scientific experiment, but if they're going to take down the Healthy Bee patties like that, it's what I'm going to give them. The pickle smell you're getting is I'm pretty sure from the thyme oil (thymol) in the mix. It's rather pungent - and thymol is also supposed to help combat varroa. So, I'm sold on Healthy Bee. Not sponsored by them, this is not an ad. It's just that I've found the bees like it a lot and I'll be using those going forward.
Hi Ian, how many pollen patties did you give your hive? I gave mine like 3, and the bees just inhale them in a week also. Do I need to provide them with patties until they don't eat it? When did you stop giving them patties?
Because the supplement is under the escape board, bees wouldn’t be travelling from the brood box to the supers anymore. So the capped honey wouldn’t take on any additional flavours at this point.
We fill the old wax melter with water, get it nice and hot to melt the wax off, then scrub with a wire brush to remove as much propolis and filth as we can.
Andrew Fultz up here in Canada our queens are already winding down. The bees know that if they swarm now they won’t make it through the winter. The bees often know more about what’s happening than the keepers do most times. We just try our best
i wouldn't buy honey from this guy, i have no knowledge about bees, but i'm watching this guy video, he has no respect for bees, when hes worker lifting hives just killing bees, and why would you feed bees?so you steal their winter food and feed them machine made crap? why you don't eat that Petty's ??

Wow , that's how the big boys keep bees ! You never cease to amaze me.

Thanks Ian for another great video. Always learn something every time I watch a video of yours.
At the end of the video, I was tickllllleeeeeeeeed pink that you had no mites!

That young lady who watches your videos and works for you is a keepeer!😂
Your helpers are eager to work. It must be good not having hive beetles to worry about!!
Kamon Reynolds Did a video on those patties. He says they DON'T build the colony up as fast as the other patties, but his bees do consume them well.

I just tested my hives and had one really bad with mites out of six.
You're lucky to have no SHB, we have it now as an endemic pest in Victoria Australia, hope you manage to keep it out.

Ian do you have much Golden Rod in your area do your bee forage on it much?
I am moving a few of my hives to take advantage of the golden rod bloom.
So you run all the bees out of the supers and overwinter with a single brood chamber? Do you ever have issues with swarming after you get them all down in the brood chamber?

Just as they set the winter nest
Cool covers - custom?
Pro tip...use a bandaid on your phone speaker on windy days!
Are we allowed to know the exact formula for the patties, not the pickle one, to help me and others ????
Is that a YES or a NO ??

@@ryandavis8939 ah well you carnt say i didnt try , better luck next time
Hello again,
The boards ur using, does it give the bee's access to the top boxes?
No, those are his bee escapes to get them down.
Ian how are you going to clean all the wax and propolis off of all those queen excluders?
Hi Glen,
We shake them through a hot water bath
Does the patty supplement taste transfer ultimately to the honey, that is, can the pickle taste of the new patty impact honey flavor?
Because the supplement is under the escape board, bees wouldn’t be travelling from the brood box to the supers anymore. So the capped honey wouldn’t take on any additional flavours at this point.
If you take away their honey and all the space forcing all the bees into 1box won't that encourage the best to swarm
Your videos should be required viewing for all employees whether they like their job or not.
Zero. Nice work 👍
Hi dear great work can u give the mix of ur protien feed plz
What date did you plant your sunnies? Will you keep those nucs in nuc boxes through the winter or put them in 10 framers? Thankyou 🐝🐝
Mid may
He overwinters the 6 as 6's.
How do you clean your queen excluders at the end of the season? I have always found this a very time consuming and frustrating task. Thanks.
We pop ours in the solar wax melter, cleans them right up.
I use a heat gun. A Wagner I got at Home Depot, I think it works pretty good.
We fill the old wax melter with water, get it nice and hot to melt the wax off, then scrub with a wire brush to remove as much propolis and filth as we can.

Have you tried the special additive in syrup ? Or will you?
We have a syrup additive , rocket fuel
Fish oil and lipids
Whats up with the blankets over the hives after the escapeboard is added?

@Chip Altman that's not an answer on the question..
+1 to this question. With so many bees, I wouldn’t think they will fit in a single and would swarm.
