There was a time in my life BB - before bees - that I wouldn't have said "exciting" was an apt descriptor for bees or their hives. Now I can't imagine living without them. Your bees are slamming. I love it.

You need to find a used restaurant dishwasher for those buckets lol
It's basically an enclosed pressure washer that heats and recycles soapy water and blasts from all directions.
Toss in a load of buckets or lids, and out they come clean!

I've discovered that trick too. Take out anything that doesn't contain brood and replace with drawn brood comb and that queen jumps on that opportunity immediately. A great way to spike brood production on these warm summer days.

Hi, Ian, Even though I am a small scale hobbyist (currently at 18 hive after a couple of combinations across 2 yards) I learn a ton about managing bees from your videos. The jump form 6 hives to 18 means I need more of a method to management, so I am adopting practices from you and others that make sense for my situation. The super-a week is one I will adopt for next year. As always, thank you for sharing. Stu

Where are you from to get that much honey? I got a 5 fr Nuc mid May and they had to draw 15 frames of comb and last week I put my 3 med super on which they have to draw comb on also. Not sure how good that is for a nuc. But 6 or 7 supers is insane. Guess we have to count our blessings. Have a good day.

Cool Beans! Even Carrie notices a change in your demeanor. Just goes to show your dedication and Hard Work will pay off in the end. This is the reason I believe every person should; a) work on a farm for a few years after High School, or; b) be required to serve in the military branch of their choice for a few years. The discipline, work ethic, and measure of success will prepare these young men and women for life with the knowledge that hard work and perseverance can produce positive results.

Ian, how come you dont put any foundation frames in the middle of the brood? Is it because of the colder climate in Canada? How many foundations/hive per year do you replace? I put in 6-7 foundation frames per year in my 24 frame (12 in the brood chamber, 12 in the honey chamber) AZ hive, and they build them all. So all in all, in a good 3 years, all frames are constantly replaced. I put the foundation frames in between the brood the spring and they build them up very quickly, one frame/day when there is honey flow from the nature. Regards :)

Ian, one more question. What do you think about putting of each new super under the full one, not on top. I mean directly on the queen excluder. Some beekeepers think bees work harder and bring more honey if they have an empty box directly above the brood nest. Thanks

It's often called a Foamie lol
It's the bubble wrap insulation you can buy at home improvement stores for wrapping water heaters and such. Usually has aluminum on one side.
It insulates better than wood or canvas, and seals all the edges against cold air and water and robbing much better than wood, and is cheap.
