  • In Lee Isaac Chung’s life-affirming “Minari,” Steven Yeun plays Jacob Yi, a Korean American dad who pursues his goal of financial success by moving his unenthusiastic family to a farm in 1980s Arkansas. There, the family members are strangers in a strange land - which has parallels with Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” in which Riz Ahmed’s character, Ruben, an intense heavy metal drummer, has to come to terms with living life as a newly deaf person. Whether Ruben or Jacob can forge new lives for themselves, ones that give them peace and fulfillment, is the central question of both “Sound of Metal” and “Minari.”
    Variety‘s Actors on Actors is presented by Amazon Studios.

    I love that Steven Yeun has gone on from The Walking Dead to become quite the thespian. You don't really see too much of even some of the biggest stars from that show once they're gone, but he's in some major arthouse and independent films, and he crushes it. It's was such a delightfully unexpected transition, and I'm glad for him, and glad I've gotten to see him grow as an actor over the years.

  • @neilrussell6714
    @neilrussell6714 3 роки тому +532

    What I think I love and respect most about Riz and Steven is that they’re self made made stars- they didn’t come from a rich family, they didn’t have their auntie or Mom make a couple of calls to a producer, they weren’t child actors, they weren’t always at the right place at the right time, and most of all- they could’ve just been that random stereotypical Indian/Asian dude in a random movie and we wouldn’t have even cared because audiences just play along with Asian or Indian stereotypes and consider them fact rather than dumb movie fiction. Everyone’s quick to notice actors like Robert Pattinson, Adam Driver, or Timothee Chalamet, but guys like Riz and Steven had to wait so long until they finally found a role that didn’t typecast them. They’re such gems and so talented. Let’s hope the awards don’t nominate them for best supporting actor rather than best actor when they’re leading men in their own films (aka- what they did to Dev Patel!)

    Both of these guys have been favorites of mine for a while and I'm super happy to see them getting the spot light more, since they're super talented and very underrated. I've been a fan of Steven Yeun longer than Riz Ahmed, but slowly over the years I've seen more and more of Riz's performances and man oh man, the talent radiating off of him, and Steven as well, never ceases to amaze me.

      Yes I saw that.. John Turturro is also in it. Both Riz and John were brilliant. Whats interesting James Gandolfini, who was one if the producers, was meant to play the role that John Turturro ended up playing. Gandolfini died and Robert De Nero was to take the role but because of scheduling conflicts Turturro eventually got it.

      It's so hard to play a shy guy who doesnt' talk much, but his physical acting was so great in the movie, especially in the first episode... where he really expressed his fear and terror so well with so little words.

Especially for Riz on being the first fellow Muslim brother for that leading role. Hopefully, he'd be in the footsteps of another Muslim, Mahershala Ali.
