The Stranger was originally meant to be alt continuity split off from The Twin Dilemma, where the Doctor did actually disappear and become a hermit and Peri went with him. Summoned by Shadows picks up after The Doctor has had a good few years to think about his behaviour and significantly mellowed out. This information comes from an old associate of Bill Baggs on the old Outpost Gallifrey forum BTW. Can't remember his name on OG but he wasn't happy with Baggs for conveniently forgetting to throw him that few extra quid as promised when the video sold well.

Hey guys, Fun fact! Spotify has a ton of Big finish doctor who episodes. I good one to start is " The Marian Conspiracy " Who introduces my favorite companion.
If I remember correctly from what Nicola Bryant once told at a convention panel, the reason why she never did more Stranger stories after the one was because she never received payment for it.
The opposite of that is the Italian James Bond knock-off OK Connery! aka Operation Kid Brother, which stars Sean's actual younger brother as Bond's younger brother, except they can't actually name him. The cast also features a host of actors from the Bond films playing the same roles but with different character names. Bernard Lee who played M, Lois Maxwell who played Moneypenny, Adolfo Celi and Anthony Dawson who'd played Bond villains, and Daniela Bianchi who played a Bond girl. It's the opposite to The Stranger, because all the actors were paid MORE than they were in the actual Bond films!
I'm a drama and music teacher and at one of the schools I worked at my students and I wrote a Doctor Who knock-off as our end of year school play/musical. Agent How ran a magical travel agency that took the different classes of students to different times and places they had studied during their school year. It was fun

First thought when I saw Fantastic Beasts was "why is this guy trying so hard to be a more awkward Matt Smith" but overall I really like those movies still

I feel like the costume designer/art director kinda did that to him. The actor seemed more like he was crossing the obsessive kid in the back of the class with Dr. Dolittle, and he just happened to be an english guy in a scarf.

Lo and behold, it is. It's so interesting that he started with DW knockoffs and became an integral part of the real show.
Most people involved in the revival series did fanfiction, parodies, and unlicensed spinoffs in the 90's.

The Stranger was made because the fans were demanding new Doctor Who, but the license was being negotiated at the time between the BBC and Universal, so no new Doctor Who could be made. It wasn't a 'knock-off', it was the closest to Doctor Who that could be done at the time given the situation and climate at the BBC.
Exactly, it was done for pure fan service. It's basically like Big Finish decided to do video, without a license.

See, I feel like comparing The Stranger to the Asylum and Vídeo Brinquedo is a bit unfair. Those studios are aping success for nefarious reasons and trying to cash in on popular films and trick inept parents into mistaking it for the actual film. The BBV stuff was made when Doctor Who wasn't on the air, so it's more like the Star Trek fan films (Phase II or Continues) if the rules were put in place much earlier and they had to file all the serial numbers off. And more of a labor of love than Atlantic Rim was. Otherwise, pretty good summation.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow desperately wants to be Doctor Who, especially the third season. Though whoever writes it is an idiot who has no clue about the UK and is full of annoying stereotypes.
But if you want knock-offs, just look at the BBC's rival network ITV, who has tried several times to make a rival, Primeval, The Tomorrow People, Demon... and so on.
That's just every show on that network. They're all written by idiots and full of stereotypes.
Primeval was kinda neat. The idea of prehistoric or speculative future species stumbling into our world and causing havoc isnt a bad idea, I just wish they maybe did it a little better.

Gatiss may be controversial among fans now but he is still the only person to have written for, starred in and played the Doctor in Doctor Who, as well as creating a docudrama too.(Though Nick Briggs isn't far behind) Pretty impressive for two guys who began in knockoffs.
I love Mark Gatiss but his work for The League of Gentlemen far exceeds his Doctor Who work

I didn't even mention him, so he'd obviously done a search for the #. I didn't even slag it, just said I was disappointed. In Doctor Who Unbound, a Big Finish alt-universe thing, Gatiss plays the Master. Add that to the list
Yeah, I think it was ignored here in the video, that Gatiss didn't specifically get work on Dr Who because he'd been involved in The Stranger, but because he'd since become a name through his writing and acting (of many characters) in The League Of Gentlemen TV series. It was the success of this BBC programme, which had started on stage and radio, and Gatiss's increased profile that led to him working on Dr Who. I don't know if the BBC approached him or he approached them, but either way The League's obvious referencing of cult TV, horror, and fantasy gave Gatiss the cachet to be involved. His involvement to The Stranger is almost incidental.
Also Bill & Ben is another BBC series.

I bought all these at the time and yes, they were a bit low quality but you nailed it when you said they were all we could get. 90’s DW fandom was desperate for any content and we lapped it up. CD, video, cassette, books, we didn’t care. We just wanted more of what we loved even if it was a bit rough around the edges. I had no idea Bill B was so controversial so loved this expose.

This is one of the most thorough, honest and well researched clips on The Stranger and BBV on the net - and the top comment is some half-assed diss?! The internet is a weird place. Anyway, The Stranger is a pretty interesting piece of entertainment that crosses into official Dr. Who continuity these days thanks to aforementioned Big Finish Productions and their canonical entries (albeit explained as an alternate timeline). What's more exciting too? Original The Stranger novels will be coming later in the year! Good times to be a fan.

This is amazing. Only one thing I wish you mentioned: One of their last releases was Do You Have a Licence to Save This Planet?, a parody of themselves starring Sylvester McCoy as Foot Doctor, hiding from "Licensed Reality Corporation".
Colin was an underrated doctor imo, vengeance on varos is fantastic, I’m going to have to check out the third stranger volume

"3rd Rock from the Sun" did a lot of "let's talk about sci-fi but show none" and it worked great! I actually was let down when they showed stuff.
3rd rock from the sun was a sit com about intelligent people out of their area of expertise. Usually there are fewer of these characters, possibly even one of these characters, in such a sit com. I have seen action films that had this going on. But 3rd Rick from the sun is not sci fi.

I think BBV is one of the main reasons why the BBC is so dickish when it comes to content creators using their stuff.
For a lot of doctor who the rights to characters and monsters where with the writers and could be licensed directly from them.

I personally loved the Auton trilogy when I was a kid back in the 90's. Stumbled over it and it honestly felt like something that could've fit in as happening in the background of late 80's who.
I just kinda think of The Stranger as "Colin Baker's missing season".
This was a really interesting episode based solely on the concept of fan films gaining enough traction and influence to hire members of the core cast and crew - specifically in science fiction (Star Wars and Firefly have a ton of fan films). I think it would be really interesting to study this trend and how fans can influence their favorite properties through their own creativity. It would be a deep rabbit hole if all forms of media were covered - fan novels and games are more prolific than fan films, I think.
It took me way too long to realize that the guy in the thumbnail is Newt Scamander and not one of the Doctors.
Yeah I wondered why that character did not work well while watching the movie and now I know that he is a lifted character, the fantastic beast young lad is stuck in and is not the lead character in a too crowded movie.

FYI "Bill and Ben" also doubles as a reference to a really old British children's show from the 50's called "Bill and Ben The Flowerpot Men" that became a sort of pre-internet meme in the UK. The Bill and Ben meme has shown up numerous times in British media throughout the decades and it ALWAYS flies over Americans' heads.

Actually, BBV did some very nice audio plays in a quasi-Who universe and some of the people involved went on to form Big Finish Productions which produces licensed Dr. Who audio plays starring many of the former Doctors. They're among the best Dr. Who stories ever produced.
So, Quinton, Lindsay Ellis and Kyle Kallgren all make videos linked to copyright/fair-use in the same week... do I smell a cabal?

13:07 You're probably already aware of this but the actor with Colin in that scene is a relative of the Second Doctor Patrick Troughton (I think it's his son or something) and actually guest starred in the Doctor Who episode Midnight as a professor.
Also, I agree about Eddie Redmayne. His mannerisms and dress sense are completely in line with a Doctor portrayal.
I thought of Newt as more of a Sherlock Holmes who likes animals but I guess doctor who is just Sherlock Holmes in time and space sooooo....

Jeni South Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes are completely different characters. It's just that Matt Smith's Doctor and Cumberbatch as Sherlock seem very similar because they were both written by Steven Moffat, and Moffat has a singular style of writing he tends to use for all of his characters.
I think you should consider the mannerisms of Newt Scamander and the Eleventh Doctor (as well as their outfits) and you can see this goes quite far.
It’s cool that Colin Baker got to play the inconspicuous doctor he always wanted to be.
I find it amazing that the original DW actors even agreed to make the knockoffs in the first place.

Since Dr Who was notoriously tight on budget, I don't imagine the actors were paid enough to happily retire on, for a few years' work each. It's worse now they're doing those awful "cons", where they sit in some horrible aircraft-hangar of a "convention centre" and ask 20 quid a time for people to talk to them for a minute.
I liked Sylvester McCoy and HNNNNG! Sophie Aldred, but I'm still not paying 20 fucking quid for a photo with them.

@@carliecasas8533 Actors, unless they're huge stars aren't generally paid much. With a job like acting, where you don't have a regular income to pay your mortgage, you really have to take what's offered. Michael Caine, despite being super rich, has never lost his outlook of taking pretty much everything offered, as that's what he did when he was a poverty line bit actor. This explains why he's been in a lot of crap, even though he could be more discerning.
Screen actors get residuals from TV showings and video sales, but they're just scraps. Which explains why they're so eager to make public appearances. If you're lucky to have been in one cult show or movie, it's all you got to milk.
Looking at The Stranger, it seems to cross the line between knock-off and spiritual successor, especially considering the original series had been cancelled at that point. Not surprising the lawyers would catch up to him.

The Stranger is oddly compelling, I would've been interested in watching this a continuation of Doctor Who. Definitely better than last couple of seasons of Doctor Who. It would have added to the cannon.

These were made to satisfy us fans during the long years when there was no new Dr Who on TV and it seemed there never would be again. We were extremely grateful for them. and they were very popular. A situation I assume you have never experienced. The BBC were completly fine with them. Also you have a very interesting way of pronouncing Nicola.

This is explicitly stated in the video, yet you felt the need to leave out the context surrounding the cease and desist just to prove the OP wrong, so saying that it “said it all” is disingenuous.
Bill Baggs and Nick Briggs first worked together in the early '80s, with the Audio Visuals range of Doctor Who audio adventures. These carried on until 1991, and starred Briggs himself as the Doctor for all but the first one. Baggs himself would go on to create a few more videos, including Zygon: When Being You Just isn't Enough, and a fifth P.R.O.B.E. film, When to Die, which recast the character of Liz Shaw, due to Caroline John's sad passing. Incidentally, several Audio Visual stories were redone as Big Finish ones.

I actually really like a lot of the BBV stuff, like audio series with the 7th doctor and ace that you mentioned is fantastic and worthy of big finish, in fact when i first heard it I mistook it for big finish and stop listening because i thought it had been pirated. Also, I haven't watched it before but i heard snakedown is quite good.
Oh and also Nicholass Brigg's fan audio series called Audio visuals is pretty good, even some of the stories god reused in the early days of big finish, just changing out the Doctors.

You missed out a fact about Nark Gatis. He also o wrote and starred in extremely dark and brilliant horror comedy, the League of Gentlemen.

@@lwaves I have a feeling he got Dr Who in spite of The Stranger, rather than because of it. Doing The League gave him a bullet proof cachet to work on Who, whereas The Stranger alone could have prevented it.
Thanks for this video. It cleared up some confusion I had about the spinoffs, the audio adventure origins (I suspect some of the motivation for the BBC to license Doctor Who was to support their IP in lawsuits), and the “in everything but names” spin/rippoffs. It was also funny, which is always welcome.

Say what you will, these knock-offs helped keep the idea of Doctor Who ALIVE during the 90's...without them, I doubt there would've been much demand for the TV Movie in 1996 or for Big Finish's officially licensed audios starting in 1999. Coincidentally, Colin Baker remained a HUGE fan after his firing, I imagine this was a big reason for him to agree to star in "The Stranger" series in the first place...he would go on to be the FIRST Classic Doctor to sign on to Big Finish and brought both Peter Davidson AND Sylvester McCoy into it as well, leading to Big Finish's VERY FIRST Classic Who audio, "The Sirens of Time", being a multi-Doctor story featuring the Fifth, Sixth AND Seventh Doctors together...so, I guess BBV, for what it's worth, deserves credit for having a much more significant role in keeping Doctor Who going than it would otherwise have a right to have...☺☺☺☺

It is interesting, that BBV was resurrected in 2021. They are producing their own audio drama, web series about Cyberon, Probe. Also, company also had a controversy, where it was revealed that they hired and defended accused child predator.
