I left my old tank out to dry completely for a week and then I filled it up again and was about to set it up and the eggs survived, I will now bleach them into oblivion, if that doesn’t work I will burn it in a landfill

😂😂 funny thing is, they will probably survive! Just nuke them and be done with it. Dont worry, its completely reasonable! It's not like we dont despise them on a molecular level 😒 THEYRE EATING OUR PLANTS 😡 That means war!
Edit: or burn them with thermite! Nothing will survive thermite. Not even their evil souls!

I used assassin snails in a 39 gallon tank which did a wonderful job, I thought, until I realized how many baby snails were just hiding in the gravel substrate. I ended up moving my fish and assassin snails into a new tank and after cleaning the 39, it’s now a quarantine tank when I need it.
By the way, your planted tank is beautiful!

What I have found in the past is that assassin snails do help keep the population of snells down however they also to eat shrimp. So before you put an assassin snail into your tank with shrimp please take it under consideration. I've seen first hand an assassin snail hunting and eating one of my neocaradina shrimp.

I have trumpet snails. I will never get rid of them all except if i completely take the tank down and start over. I liked the pond snails like you have, better! All my pond snails disappeared when the trumpet snails showed up, for some reason. Those darn trumpet snails came in with a plant and i suspect it was from a plant i bought from Aquarium co-op. I pick them out manually and put them in the bird bath outside. Some people say they are against what i do with them, but it is what it is! Best regards.

If the snails aren't too large, try adding a few medium size loaches like the yo-yo loach (botia almorhae), the angelicus loach (botia kubotai) or the zebra loach (botia striata). They can be entertaining to watch play and chase each other, and they will eat EVERY snail in your tank, but not immediately.
These loaches can live for several years and don't get too big. They also don't cost a lot, are easy to feed, and they get along with other fish. The only downside is they need company so you can't get just one. I love mine, even though they hide a lot! Lastly, they will need a few hiding places like fake logs.

      I'm sorry, but I don't have shrimp.
I imagine if a fish can fit them in their mouth, they'll eat them.
It's probably also dependent on the size. Baby shrimp are always at risk of being eaten because they're like a chicken nugget, bite-sized.
      Good luck🍀!

Step one, place a "big chunk" not what you did of cucumber on a fork and place it in there at lights out and pull it out each morning. Do this until you have majorly reduced the population. Then use "No Planaria" at the prescribed dosage. It will kill off bladder snails completely, but will not effect the eggs. Repeat the 3 day dosage in 3 weeks will kill off the babies. Assassin snails will eat your shrimplets when they've run out of snails to eat. I would try to remove as many bladder snails by hand or by cucumber and use No Planaria, completely shrimp safe, but will not work with ramshorn snails and limited results with malaysian trumpet snails.

Except the Assassin Snails will reproduce and they will multiply too. Even Nerites they claim need to have the opposite sex to reproduce, but they lay eggs all over the glass, and some actually mature. I know, I am dealing with that in one of my tanks right now. That tank has only had Nerites in it, yet there were eggs galore, and even though I thought I had gotten rid of all the eggs, all of a sudden I have all these babies showing up.

  • @lurklingX

LOACHES eat snails. they are also supposed to be kept in groups though. kuhli loach, regular lil cory kats, and also things like yoyo loaches (which look hella cool imho). *i got a yoyo loach* and what i can tell you is that i now have the snails in check. i think he only goes after the smaller ones. no longer are there any on the glass sides. some of the others got way bigger and were easy to pluck out. but it no longer feels INSANE and overwhelming.
so, i'd say that getting a loach will fix 65% of your problem. you may still have some snails but hardly noticeable. and i think if you pick the large ones out, your loach will be taking care of the small ones and eventually you'll be in the clear.
it's a *massive* difference compared to my tank that has no loach. (but i have a shrimp in there and i hear that loaches sometimes try to go after shrimp. don't wanna kill my lil orange guy. might swap the loach to that tank later or idk.)

I always treated my plants before putting them in my tank, except one time, and that’s when I started seeing hitchhikers snails. So far I haven’t (seen) many and I manually remove them. I also have nerite snails and a pleco which might be out competing the invaders. I also tried using zucchini but only my nerites and pleco enjoyed it. There are a few videos where alum is used and it always works. Doesn’t hurt the plants. Originally, I was using 5% peroxide solution and aquarium salt. It kills algae, snails and eggs but It kills ferns tho. It’s also possible for snails to come in with fish or even pooped out of fish. I’ll definitely use alum on my next plants. You can find alum at the grocery store in the spice isle.

@@katelovell625 Since answering your question I’ve had to treat the tank for flatworms and hydra. I used NoPlanaria first and then Panacur C dog dewormer. Now I can’t have snails in that tank. The meds aren’t coming out. So, try either medication and you definitely won’t have a pest snail problem

Best way is to keep your gravel clean, keep water perimeters on point, switch to a different food source that doesnt sink to the bottom and remove plants that seem to be a foodsource for snails. I forgot the name but i have a specific plant that attracts them like catnip does to cats (thats my snailtrap).

Nice one Stephen. I do it the old school way by picking them out. I usually wait until they're on the glass so it's "easier". I've also found those small, stiff nets with a bamboo handle are an effective solution as well.

    • @stephenmanning3978
      @stephenmanning3978  4 роки тому +1

Zokomo TV thanks for watching and for the comment! I hear you on the old school method, I just don’t think I can get them all by hand, especially since so many are tucked into my hair grass and under the plants. I do have a survival of the fittest rule when I do water changes: if the snail is in reach, it’s gets picked off.

Now vacuum out half your tanks water, then put new gravel in, then all new fixtures in - or just clean your previous fixtures and plants 🪴. Then fill the tank up with water 💧🙂👍.

You got 2 options bro. Your assassin snails should work over time. If not, you'll have to rip the tank apart, dip all your plants, media, etc into a bleach solution for 3 minutes then wash everything off really good and hope all the eggs died in the dip.. those snails you have came with a plant and thats how your tank got infested. Hopefully the assassins will work and you wont have to bleach dip..
Also, when buying plants, its good to quarantine the plants for 2 weeks before adding to your nice tanks. If any snails are in the plants, they will show themselves in 2 weeks time and you can kill them off before they make it to your tanks.

A single pea puffer will do the job.

I personally don’t advocate for purchasing livestock for the purposes of removing snails. Pea puffers have very specific care requirements and once they take care of your snail problem, you are left with a fish you need to continue to care for.

Best way empty your tank from the fish and add salt they will die right away

i got snails a few years ago from a piece of wood from pet shop next thing i knew had snails everywhere i tried all these methods except the killer snail i did not want snails I had no luck with any methods i had to manually remove them
I kept the fish in tank and removed everything but the fish and filter i removed all the gravel.. I did not remove everything at once i removed a little bit at the time . a few decorations at a time and removed the gravel a little bit at a time i did the gravel in sections . and my tank was bare bottom till i clean and made sure all the snails was gone snail eggs can live for up to 14 days i feed my fish very light .. and every other day i did not want to over feed and feed the snails too and have them multiply
i boiled all my directions and wood and after a month and no snail signs i stared adding new gravel in small sections at a time and readied everything back ..i am doing plants now With plants i do the alma dip and quarantine the plants before i add to my tank to prevent unwanted snails

I had a huge problem with snails until recently. The method that I chose really only works if you have a smaller tank 10-50 gallons and if you do not use live plants.
Basically I completely cleared my tank out, had to put all my cosmetics outside to dry to allow all the snails and eggs to completely dry out. Then both the tank and everything else was doused in bleach. I spent a lot of time scraping all the eggs off the sides and from my cosmetics. From what I have read on the internet, this is the only way to completely guarantee that you no longer have any snails left in the tank.
Really great video tho, I see you quickly booming in popularity among fish-tube

Sounds like a ton of work! I’d be worried about losing plants to the bleach but I know others have found success with this method. Thanks for the comment and the words of support!

    Good info.
Shall keep my nerite snail in the same tank while using assassin snail or move into another tank.

You will have to remove your nerite snail or the assassin snail will try to kill it and most likely it will get killed

Yes indeed. Though it’s very difficult to get them all. Better to get all the mature ones out before they can reproduce.

put a yoyo loach in and from day 2 you will start seeing empty shells building up on the bottom of the tank . They are too big for a nano tank but buy him let him do his job and take him back. Almost like renting a hitman

    • @stephenmanning3978
      @stephenmanning3978  2 роки тому

True but I don’t advocate people stock there tank based on a desire to eradicate snails. Because if you’re not crazy about the fish your still stuck with it after the snails are gone.

You should learn more about snails before attempting to educate others. Snails are asexual meaning they don't need male and female to breed.
