    Assassin snails. What wonderful little gastropods. I bought four to help with a snail infestation in a 75 gallon tank. A few months later they were the only snails to be found, but I had lots and lots of baby assassin snails. Fortunately, they found their eco balance and they really are rather pretty. Get you some!

      They are wonderful at cleaning up excess frozen foods, like Bloodworms, Tubifex and Brine Shrimp.
      They also breed readily.

      I have 3 nano planted tanks & I have had snails in all of them, somehow. I have a Betta in one of the tanks & I think he's actually eating the snail larvae, too. I can't see them, of course, but I think he does. It looks like he's hunting or something, looking intensely & then he goes for it.
      On another note, I really don't mind snails. I hate killing anything. So, I've just been picking them from my 2 smaller tanks & putting them into my 5 gallon tank. I thought they were making holes in my plant's leaves, then I found out it's just because they are lacking potassium & thanks to Jason, now I know that the snails don't harm the plants. I just might let them be now, for now.

    Great video...You really covered the bases on this one. FWIW...I am steadfastly on team snail! I got into snails when I started keeping live plants. Overnight...POOF! They do a fantastic job keeping a tank clean and I have them in all 40 tanks now with the exception of the large SA cichlid tanks. Those tanks are where extra snails go to meet their maker. To collect extra snails I put a small dish with food in it into the aquarium at lights out. I pull the dish in the morning and feed the snails to the SA's. Thanks for the great video!

    Excellent video! The pest snails that have invaded my tank are bladder snails... I actually think they are kind of pretty! I just really wish they wouldn't reproduce so much! The problem is that I am an accidental mystery snail rancher. I have become the biggest mystery snail dork in the last year. I love em! They are so freaking entertaining! In order to reduce the quantity of bladder snails, I would have to also endanger my mystery snails. So, for now, I will just let them be and every so often I will clean the eggs off of my plants (paper towels or cotton swabs are actually pretty good at this!).

    This is the first time I've gotten an unwanted snail in one of my recently purchased plants. And just today I noticed quite a few baby snails. I don't know what kind they were and this new planted tank is under 15 gallons so it's not like there hundreds in there although I did remove between 40 and 50. And my brand new "turkey baster" sucks them right off the glass!!! So as long as they're very small, manually removing them via the turkey baster method wasn't that bad and didn't take that long. And while I probably missed a couple they're now what I call snails under control!!!

    Some people worry that fish will choke on the snails, if it fits in a goldfishes mouth they’ll eat it and mush them up with their crushing block (teeth) at the back of their mouths. Snails are also good source of vitamins too for fishes.

    I found the best way! Im a beginner and at first i liked the one snail in my tank but eventually it got really bad. I tried everything but nothing worked.
    Now i have the snails under control and it was rather easy. I plant damaged plants with big weak leaves. Snails love them and feed from them and just after a day or two just remove the plant again. The snail will hold on the the plant and you can trap dozens of them all at once. It's a natural trap basically. I don't know the name of the plant i used.
    Another thing was when one of my platies was pregnant (first timer for me and i tried to save the babies). I got one baby and i put it in a small hatchery. I noticed the snails eventually start gathering in there as there is little waterflow and lots of food in there. I replace the baby and then remove the snail. It works way better than the baited traps designed for snails. My hatchery consists of 2 parts and i added soms pieces of plants in there for cover for the baby but the snails love them aswell.

I have so many trumpet snails in my 20-gallon tank and I have one Betta fish. I am going to see if I can get the assassin snail to clear my tank up. I guess my question is will my Betta fish get along with the assassin snail?

      If there are regular snails in the tank he will probably leave the assassin snail alone too.

    I don't think I'd mind if they quickly snapped them up, but I read on a forum that pea puffers will take chunks out of bigger snails, and one user said they leave them alone after biting their antenna off. That doesn't sound like the display tank I'm going for.

    I have 7 tanks from 2.5 gallons to 40 gallons that have pest snails. Fortunately, my local fish store is happy to take them as food for their puffers and loaches, or to sell to people who own the sorts of fish that eat snails. I pull out, no joke, literally 1000 snails a week to take to the store. And even at that rate, there is still a thousand to pull out for the next week. It is insane. But mostly I pull them out while they are still quite small, it's rare to have a snail that hid well enough long enough to become a full sized adult on me. Sometimes, but not often.
    My 40 gallon and 20 gallon tanks are for breeding mystery snails, which means the conditions in those tanks are also perfect for pest snails to thrive, and they do. I can pull out at least a hundred pest snails a day from those two tanks alone and never seem to run out. I have a 10 gallon tank which I've dedicated exclusively to holding pest snails until I can get to the fish store, so there's always eggsacks being laid in that tank everywhere since that's where most of the snails end up for at least a few days, thereby ensuring I will never ever run out of pest snails in that tank. The other tanks have low pest snail populations and I am doing my best to keep them as low as possible. Those tanks are meant for isolating breeding pairs of mystery snails, or as hospice for dying snails, and I don't mind a couple of pest snails in those tanks to keep them biologically active when they aren't otherwise in use (I also keep a couple of plants in those tanks besides to help with that). I pull a couple of snails out of those tanks every day, but rarely more than a couple, yet the population seems to remain pretty stable.
    Then I have a betta tank and a shrimp tank where I mostly let the pest snails be, at least until I see there are enough new ones growing up, then I remove some of the largest ones to take to the fish store. Those are probably the only truly fully adult size snails that go to the store, most of the others are small.
    But yeah, 1000 snails a week from just 7 tanks
    By contrast, I might take 30 to 40 mystery snails to the fish store every week. Pest snails are a pest for a reason! Outbreeding mystery snails by at least a 25:1 margin! Ouch!

    • @sststr
      @sststr Рік тому

      Oh, and yes, can confirm that pest snails do not eat plants. They may crawl all over the plants, but unless that plant is dead, they will not actually eat it. Indeed, when I need to remove snails from the tank, pulling out a plant usually yields a large number of snails to scrape off the leaves, leaving me to see that the leaves are, in fact, completely unharmed, they just like to hang out on leaves for some reason.
      They also like hard surfaces, like smooth rocks, so if you have rocks small enough to pull out with one hand, you can often get a large number out in one go by just pulling the rock out. Especially if it has any hollows in it, they love to hide in interior spaces. Top Fin sells these very smooth hollow circular rocks that the snails absolutely love, and those rocks are always crammed full of snails every single time. I've found betta fish also like those Top Fin circle rocks as well, if they aren't overflowing with pest snails... I would expect any critter that likes to hide would enjoy that rock, it's a great ornament to have in your inventory!

    I keep Kuhli loaches,Zebra loaches,Black Neon Tetras,and a bunch of Otocinclus Catfish for the algae. Somehow I wound up with MTS from the fish store but I really like them now that I know more about them :) You rarely even see them when the lights are on. I found out the Kuhli dont really eat snails, is this right ? If so its just the Zebra Loach who have decided they really like snails. Theres still quite a few but not a ton.There used to be a lot of them on the glass and a carpet of them on top of the sand at night, I can't even take a guess at how many..

    Rosy Barbs love eating snails... Changing my fake to planted tank. And OMG the amount of trumpet snails I have pulled out. My issue with them is that the shells get broken down and I can't seem to vacuum them out. They just float in the water and never go up the tube. Im to the point now, I'm using tweezers and pulling them up as they come up through the new black sand.... I tend to over feed, so cutting back on that now...

    I hate the snails , i started this little 10 gallon planted tank with a betta and 3 pygmy cories . I got no idea where these snails came from but they just appeared . I cant tell you what snails they are because they are still so small . If they came with the plants they were then undercover for at least 6 weeks before showing themselves . Im thinking of going to my fish buy and pretty much buying some kind of loach that can wipe them out and I can then give it back to him once its done . Have you got a suggestion on what little loach or other fish would be best ? . I hope the fish you suggest would not take the plants out but if it does then so be it . I just want those things out of here . Thanks in advance

    I have made a trap. Drill some holes into a plastic jar. Add weight to keep it on the bottom, add fishing line to pull it back up and clear it every day. I use carrot but any vegetable matter will work. Clear it every day and soon enough you’ll see the numbers go down.

    I have some beautiful rams horn snails in my 12 gallon tank, copper, white brown, yes I love snails but they seem to be out competing my cherry shrimp for food. I recently discovered a rams horn in my cichlid tank he was huge and somehow managed to not get eaten. The cichlids definately eat the bladder snails that get in on the plants. I will try putting some in and see if they eat them. I really think the one (who recently died) just managed to hid till he got too big and I mean it was the biggest rams horn I've ever seen! In my other tanks they seem to stay under control so maybe I'm overfeeding cos I think the shrimp aren't getting enough.

    This might be a really stupid question, but how do you dispose of the snails? I scoop them out, then what? Toss outside, throw in the trash? I have too many Mystery Snails, even though I love them! My betta has been taking care of the babies, but the ones that make it to adulthood are a problem now. I have 3 adults (and some babies) and my betta in a 6.5 gallon, I know I have to get rid of a couple of the adults, so what do I do? It seems cruel to squish. :(

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  6 років тому +1

      The truth is it’s not something I typically worry about in my fish room because I have so many scavengers in my tanks. Other snails, plecos, fish that pick on dead things, etc. I can’t recall ever having an issue with dead snails and usually don’t know they’ve died until I just see the shell. In a small tank without scavengers I suppose it could be a problem, it’s just not something I make a point to observe.
